  Laura Schleifer is the Institute for Critical Animal Studies Conference Director, Program Chair at Promoting Enduring Peace, and co-founder of Plant the Land, a Gaza-based vegan food justice/community projects team. A lifelong “artivist” and graduate of NYU Tisch School of the Arts, she's performed throughout the Middle East with a circus troupe, taught in China, Nicaragua, and at Wesleyan University's Green Street Arts Center, performed off-Broadway, and arts-mentored homeless youth. Sunday August 21, 2022 marks 9 years since authoritarian dictator Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons to kill over 1,400 Syrians, including many children. Coinciding with in-person events happening in New York City and Washington DC, Connecticut-based organization Promoting Enduring Peace held a candle-lighting Zoom event, in honor of the victims of the 2013 Ghouta massacre. Dr. Zaki Lababidi, MD was born in Homs, Syria, graduated from medical school in Damascus in 1985, and has been working as an interventional cardiologist in Arizona. He is involved with the Syrian American Council and is engaged in lots of different work related to Syria. James Clement van Pelt co-founded and led Yale's Initiative in Religion, Science & Technology from 2003 to 2012 and since 2003 has made presentations at conferences and symposia relevant to science-religion and consciousness studies. He has co-produced ten international conferences at Yale and has authored, edited, and contributed to various scholarly articles and books. He has co-taught science-religion courses at Yale, and holds the Master of Arts in Religion (magna cum laude) from the Yale Divinity School, where he was a research fellow from 2003 to 2005 and an instructor/lecturer from 2005 to 2007. Currently he is a member of the American Philosophical Association, the Society for Consciousness Studies, and the Society for Scientific Exploration, and is also a Board member and Shapley-Booth Fellow of the Institute for Religion in an Age of Science. He has been the co-founder and director of alternative institutions such as the Connecticut Folk Festival and Green Expo, the Miccosukee Land Cooperative in Tallahassee, and the Center for Participant Education at Florida State University. During his technology career he was the Director of Advanced Solutions for Dun & Bradstreet and served as technology advisor to public schools districts and other institutions. James Clement van Pelt co-founded and led Yale’s Initiative in Religion, Science & Technology from 2003 to 2012 and since 2003 has made presentations at conferences and symposia relevant to science-religion and consciousness studies. He has co-produced ten international conferences at Yale and has authored, edited, and contributed to various scholarly articles and books. He has co-taught science-religion courses at Yale, and holds the Master of Arts in Religion (magna cum laude) from the Yale Divinity School, where he was a research fellow from 2003 to 2005 and an instructor/lecturer from 2005 to 2007. Currently he is a member of the American Philosophical Association, the Society for Consciousness Studies, and the Society for Scientific Exploration, and is also a Board member and Shapley-Booth Fellow of the Institute for Religion in an Age of Science.He has been the co-founder and director of alternative institutions such as the Connecticut Folk Festival and Green Expo, the Miccosukee Land Cooperative in Tallahassee, and the Center for Participant Education at Florida State University. During his technology career he was the Director of Advanced Solutions for Dun & Bradstreet and served as technology advisor to public schools districts and other institutions. He has served as an officer of Promoting Enduring Peace since 2005.
