Fears Exploited: The Dangerous Alliances of Netanyahu and Trump with Religious Extremists. As tensions escalate further in the Middle East, it's crucial to explore the unexpected alliances driving conflicts, as **I s r a e l ' s f a r - r i g h t l e a d e r s** are fiercely defending their military actions under the banner of "self-defense" while leaving the safety of the Jewish people in question. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: Israel's far-right leaders, assisted by their allies in the U.S., have waged a year-long assault on Gaza in the name of “self-defense” after the attacks by Hamas on October 7 2023. Now Israel stands accused of genocide and war is breaking out across the region. Military conflict won't make Jews — or any of us — more safe, so why do leaders like Benjamin Netanyahu and former U.S. president Donald Trump continue to get away with casting themselves as the “protectors” of Israel and the Jewish people? The Trump campaign is actually deeply allied with anti-semitic Christian Zionists whose investment in Israel is tied up with a belief in Biblical “End Times” when Jews convert or perish. In this report, (which was recorded before the Israeli assassination of Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon,) we turn to Ben Lorber, a Senior Analyst at Political Research Associates and co-author of the book “Safety Through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism.” Also joining us are Phyllis Bennis, Director of the New Internationalism Project and fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington D.C. and the author of several books on the United Nations and the Middle East; and Yoav Peck, an organizational psychologist, Executive Director of Solidarity of Nations and Israeli peace activist based in Jerusalem. Together we unpack the links between Christian Zionism and Jewish Zionism, look at how trauma has become a political tool, and ask, how might any of us become less vulnerable to the weaponizing of our fears, with a commentary from Laura.“Real antisemitism is on the rise, but the problem is with all the attention being put on the false claim that criticizing Israel, demanding a ceasefire, demanding an end to genocide, standing with South Africa, asking the International Court of Justice to hold Israel accountable for genocide [is antisemitic]. Those things are not antisemitic. But if you put all your focus there, you're not out there ending the kind of real antisemitism that comes from the Right.” - Phyllis Bennis“It doesn't make us any safer to empower the state, to go after protesters in this way, and as a Jew it's, especially galling to me that it's done in the name of Jewish safety . . . Taking away people's speech rights, deporting people in the name of keeping me safe doesn't keep me safe.” - Ben Lorber“People are traumatized and retraumatized and dwelling on October 7. The media is supporting it every day . . . But October 7 is a year ago, and where we are now is a completely different place. So now we have a major educational challenge ahead of us to get people to see the link between Israel's occupation of the Palestinians and the present situation.” - Yoav PeckGuests:• Phyllis Bennis: Fellow, Institute for Policy Studies & Director, New Internationalism Project; International Advisor, Jewish Voice for Peace• Ben Lorber: Senior Research Analyst, Political Research Associates; Co-Author, Safety through Solidarity: A Radical Guide to Fighting Antisemitism• Yoav Peck: Organizational Psychologist; Executive Director, Achvat Amim/Solidarity of Nations Full Episode Notes are located HERE. A conversation with activist scholar Fayrouz Yousfi, based in Belgium, who speaks on the mobilization to support Palestine within universities across Belgium. Fayrouz offers a window into a context where there has been an important mobilization for Palestine in western Europe. Fayrouz speaks about the student encampment actions, the push in Belgium to divest from Israeli university collaborations and how these campus based organizing efforts are tied to the larger Palestine solidarity movement in the country. This interview was recorded and produced by Stefan Christoff for broadcast on Radio AlHara in Palestine and is airing on Tuesday, June 11 at 9am eastern time, 4pm Bethlehem time, streaming at http://radioalhara.net The accompanying music is by Badawi, with a short excerpt of a piece "Cette lumière qui surgit des décombres" by Joël Lavoie from this album: https://aosmosis.bandcamp.com/album/artists-against-apartheid-montr-al-session The accompanying graphic is from Justseeds artists' cooperative http://justseeds.org
This is the second edition of Voices from Beirut which I have produced for Radio AlHara in Palestine. On this edition we hear from Omar Abi Azar, the co-artistic director and theatre creator at Zoukak Theatre company in Beirut, Lebanon. Omar speaks critically about the decision to keep the theatre company open in Lebanon during this time of war, which includes of course Israeli airstrikes in south Lebanon and throughout the country which has resulted in many killings and the widespread destruction of major agricultural lands and nature reservations in the south of the country. Info on Zoukak Theatre here: https://zoukak.org Also we hear from Lena Merhej, one of the founders of the Samandal comic art project in Lebanon that has long created space for the expression of social movement voices through drawing, comics and the arts in Lebanon. Lena speaks about giving drawing workshops this past year, including to a student in Gaza who was killed within the context of the ongoing Israeli state genocidal military action in Gaza, Palestine. Information on the Samandal comics project here https://samandal-comics.org Finally we got directly to Palestine and hear from Ahmad Jaradat who works with the Alternative Information Center (AIC) in the occupied West Bank of Palestine. Ahmad speaks about the realities that face Palestinian political prisoners today and over the last generations. Information about Ahmad's work at AIC here: https://www.aicpalestine.org Finally we hear a radio documentary that I co-produced in 2005 with Sawsan Kalache about the realities facing Palestinian refugees living in the refugee camps in Lebanon, particularly in the community of Burj Shemali Camp in southern Lebanon. Although this documentary was produced almost twenty years ago it speaks to some critical issues that remain, namely the lived realities of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon who are living in camps waiting for their Right to Return to historic Palestine to be enforced. It should also be noted that many services within a community like Burj Shemali Camp, including health and education, are administered by UNRAW. Info about this specific camp is here: https://www.unrwa.org/where-we-work/lebanon/burj-shemali-camp The music on this edition is by the artist Badawi and PJS. I took the accompanying photo was taken in the borderlands between Lebanon and Palestine in 2005.

This week, I'm sharing my chat with Emran Iqbal El-Badawi, Program Director and Associate Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Houston, where he is also Chair of Modern and Classical Languages. He's here to talk about his new book: "Queens and Prophets: How Arabian Noblewomen and Holy Men Shaped Paganism, Christianity and Islam." He's here to talk all about ancient Arabia, why other scholars in the field challenged him about writing this book, the role of women in this culture, and to explain how he's able to research people who lived so long ago there is very little written historical record (it helps he's able to read in a multitude of languages!) "Queens and Prophets" is available everywhere, including through bookshop.org. Click here to buy a copy using the Vulgar History affiliate link. The research we are reviewing in this course showcases how far we've come in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cerebral palsy (CP) in children. The authors also explore the strength of the evidence behind 182 interventions for CP, organizing them into an “evidence traffic light.”This is an important paper for all OTs to read—not just because CP is one of the most common physical disabilities we see on our caseloads, but because the paper is so well written. The authors do a fantastic job of highlighting the general trends behind what works, what doesn't work, and the progress that still needs to be made. After reviewing the articleI am thrilled to welcome Dr. Iona Novak, OT, PhD., one of the article's authors. Her and I will discuss the implications for your occupational therapy practice. In order to earn credit for this course, you must take the test within the OT Potential Club. You can find more details on this course here:https://otpotential.com/ceu-podcast-courses/cerebral-palsy-and-otHere's the primary research we are discussing:Novak, I., Morgan, C., Fahey, M., Finch-Edmondson, M., Galea, C., Hines, A., Langdon, K., Namara, M. School Farms: Feeding and Educating Children (Routledge, 2021) highlights the potential of school farms to fight hunger and malnutrition by providing access to locally produced, fresh, and healthy food as well as providing young students with educational opportunities to learn, interact with nature, and develop their skills. Hunger is one of the most pressing concerns we face today and there is a clear need to provide alternative sources of food to feed a fast-growing population. School farms offer a sustainable opportunity to produce food locally in order to feed underprivileged students who rely on school meals as an integral part of their daily diet. Approaching the concept of school farms through four themes, Problem, People, Process, and Place, the book shows how they can play an essential role in providing sustainable and healthy food for students, the critical role educational institutions can play in promoting this process, and the positive impact hands-on farming can have on students' mental and physical well-being. Utilising the authors' personal hands-on experiences, and drawing on global case studies, the book provides a theoretical framework and practical guidance to help with the establishment of school farms and community-based gardening projects and an education system which promotes a sustainable and healthy approach to food, agriculture, and the environment. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of food security, agriculture, healthy and sustainable diets, education for sustainable development, and urban studies. It will also be of great interest to practitioners and policymakers involved in food policy, developing school and community projects, global health and international development, as well as education professionals. Rituparna Patgiri, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi. She has a PhD in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.
