UKRAINE, WISCONSIN, BURNING THE REICHSTAG & THE REALITIES OF GRASSROOTS / WEB ORGANIZING We start GREEP Zoom #218 with our laureate MIMI GERMAN & her fabulous poetry. With TATANKA BRICCA we then celebrate the birthday of the great CESAR CHAVEZ & The United Farmworkers Union. The Green Party's HOWIE HAWKINS & Ukrainian engineer DENYS BONDAR relate the realities of Putin's “hybrid nuclear war” that combines the horrors of atomic weapons and power plants. Denys reminds us of the Budapest Memorandum in which Ukraine thought it had traded the warheads it inherited from the former Soviet Union in exchange for peace & security. Howie tells us of the brave Ukrainians staying behind the maintain the Ukrainian reactors to keep them from causing another Chernobyl-sized disaster despite being tortured by the Russians. We also hear that Putin has destroyed 70% of Ukraine's wind power while Vampirizing the juice from Crimea's solar panels. The question of whether mass rallies can become more than photo ops through the use of QR codes is discussed by organizer GINI LESTER & computer guru LEE FELSENSTEIN. Howie then wonders if organizers at April 5 rallies throughout the country. Ohio's SANDY BOLZENIUS lauds the decentralized nature of these pro-democracy rallies nationwide. Solar homeowner PAUL NEWMAN of Healthcare For Us describes using cell phone hotspots to link into rallies. We hear further MURTZA MURTI about using a MailChimp page to further working groups for democratic progress. A call for a working group comes from Lee Felsenstein. Howie refers us to the book subtitled THE MASS PROTEST DECADE & THE MISSING REVOLUTION. Re-localization is advocated for us by MIKE HERSH. The history of the farmworkers is revisited by Tatanka. Recalling her radio interview with Dolores Huerta is LYNN FEINERMAN. We finish with Tatanka conjuring up Communities of Resistance to carry us through the coming Reichstag Fire & fascist putsch, where we will begin again next week.

Jacobin Radio presents a webinar, moderated by Suzi and sponsored by Haymarket Books and the Ukraine Solidarity Network, marking the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Just days after this discussion, the Trump administration laid out a deal that trades an end to the fighting for U.S. economic control over Ukraine's minerals without providing security guarantees. This is no peace plan but a surrender, a betrayal of Ukraine's fight for self-determination. Denys Pilash, Grusha Gilaeva, and Howie Hawkins unpack Trump's blackmail, the consequences of a more Putin-friendly policy, what's at stake for Ukraine, and what it will mean for political prisoners and the left in Russia. Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.

Rudi was “Red Rudi,” the notorious leader of German SDS, the youth group of the Social Democrats that broke away from it in the 1960s, and one of the key organizers of the Green party movement in the 1970s, promoting ecosocialist as an alternative to Western Social Democracy's regulated capitalism and the Soviet bloc's authoritarian rule by the bureaucratic party-state calling itself socialist. pWotD Episode 2745: 2020 United States presidential election Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 3,943,922 views on Wednesday, 6 November 2024 our article of the day is 2020 United States presidential election. The 2020 United States presidential election was the 59th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. The Democratic ticket of former vice president Joe Biden and the junior U. S. senator from California Kamala Harris defeated the incumbent Republican president Donald Trump, and vice president Mike Pence. The election took place against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic and related recession. The election saw the highest voter turnout by percentage since 1900. Biden received more than 81 million votes, the most votes ever cast for a candidate in a U. S. presidential election. In a competitive primary that featured the most candidates for any political party in the modern era of American politics, Biden secured the Democratic presidential nomination. Biden's running mate, Harris, became the first African-American, first Asian-American, and third female vice presidential nominee on a major party ticket. Trump secured re-nomination, getting a total of 2,549 delegates, one of the most in presidential primary history, in the Republican primaries. Jo Jorgensen secured the Libertarian presidential nomination with Spike Cohen as her running mate, and Howie Hawkins secured the Green presidential nomination with Angela Nicole Walker as his running mate. The central issues of the election included the public health and economic impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic; civil unrest in reaction to the police murder of George Floyd and others; the Supreme Court following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett; and the future of the Affordable Care Act. Due to the ongoing pandemic, a record number of ballots were cast early and by mail. Thirty-eight states had over half of all votes cast using these methods, and only three states had fewer than 25%.Many more registered Democrats voted by mail than registered Republicans. As a result of a large number of mail-in ballots, some swing states saw delays in vote counting and reporting; this led to major news outlets delaying their projection of Biden and Harris as the president-elect and vice president-elect until the morning of November 7. Major media networks project a state for a candidate once there is high statistical confidence that the outstanding vote would be unlikely to prevent the projected winner from ultimately winning that state.Biden received the majority in the Electoral College with 306 electoral votes, while Trump received 232. Trump was the first president to lose re-election since George H. W. Bush in 1992. Key to Biden's victory were his wins in the Democratic-leaning Rust Belt states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, which Trump narrowly carried in 2016 and whose combined 46 electoral votes were enough to swing the election to either candidate. Biden also became the first Democrat to win a presidential election in Georgia since 1992 and in Arizona since 1996, as well as Nebraska's 2nd congressional district since 2008.Before, during, and after Election Day, Trump and numerous other Republicans engaged in an aggressive and unprecedented attempt to subvert the election and overturn the results, falsely alleging widespread voter fraud and trying to influence the vote-counting process in swing states in what has been described as an attempted self-coup d'état. Attorney General William Barr and officials in each of the 50 states found no evidence of fraud (widespread or otherwise) or irregularities in the election. Federal agencies overseeing election security said it was the most secure in American history. The Trump campaign and its allies, including Republican members of Congress, continued to attempt to overturn the results of the election by filing numerous lawsuits in several states (most of which were withdrawn or dismissed), spreading conspiracy theories alleging fraud, pressuring Republican state election officials (including, notably, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in a phone call that later became widely publicized) and legislators to change results, pressuring the Department of Justice to declare the election "corrupt" and intervene, objecting to the Electoral College certification in Congress, and refusing to cooperate with the presidential transition of Biden. With Trump vowing that he would never concede the election and after exhorting his followers to "fight like hell", a mob of Trump supporters attacked the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, during the joint session of Congress held to certify the Electoral College count. On January 7, Trump acknowledged the incoming administration without mentioning Biden's name. Biden and Harris were inaugurated on January 20, 2021; in a break from tradition, Trump did not attend his successor's inauguration. Trump was indicted on August 1, 2023, on four counts relating to conspiring to overturn the results. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:12 UTC on Thursday, 7 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2020 United States presidential election on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Russell.

I voted on Halloween which is a tradition of mine because the Democratic and Republican candidates frighten me. In 2020 I interviewed Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins and Libertarian presidential candidate Jo Jorgensen and found them to both be smart, capable and having more good ideas and solutions to the country's problems than the 2 party system offered then and now. Please vote and consider voting 3rd party. Now more than ever we need more choices and voices. Mark interviewed Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins and they had an interesting discussion about ballot access for third parties, how Howie was the first candidate to propose a Green New Deal, what he would do to fight the Covid pandemic and how he feels Trump and BIden have let us down in this crisis. He has a plan to eliminate fossil fuels in 10 years, cut military spending and get troops out of the middle east, have Medicare for All and lays out the similarities and differences between himself and Bernie Sanders. Whether you agree or disagree with him, he has a substantive and different point of view which is worth a listen and voting consideration. Mark got to interview Libertarian candidate for President Jo Jorgensen and asked her tough questions about health care, the coronavirus, climate change, foreign policy, abortion and more. Dr. Jorgensen being a former teacher rapped Mark across the knuckles a couple of time and presented an alternative to the 2 party system as well as a sense of humor.

Live Coverage of the Republican National Convention: Day Three

Take a listen to our coverage of Day 3 of the Republican National Convention from Riverwest Radio in Milwaukee. The Pacifica Radio Network's national coverage is supported by sustaining sponsorships from unions representing close to two million rank and file members. Yesterday on the second night of the RNC the theme of the night was "Make America Safe Once Again," where Republican speakers took to the stage to paint a picture of the country plagued by violent crime. They linked crime with immigration, driving home some of the GOP's top priorities in their party platform, to seal the border and to deport undocumented immigrants in record numbers.Meanwhile, more details have emerged about the fatal police shooting of Samuel Sharpe, Jr, an unhoused Black veteran who was killed yesterday, at the hands of five out-of-state police officers. They are five of roughly 4,000 who are in Milwaukee to provide security for the RNC. Samuel Sharpe, Jr was shot and killed by officers from Columbus, Ohio, at the intersection of 14th and Vliet streets in western downtown Milwaukee, about a mile from the RNC perimeter.Community members held a vigil for Sharpe yesterday evening, where they condemned the city of Milwaukee for hosting the RNC and providing the circumstances that led to Sharpe's death. A mile away, in central downtown Milwaukee's Deer District, Republican Party officials and elected leaders continued their third day of sessions and networking surrounded by thousands of law enforcement officials. The RNC was promised to bring approximately $200 million in direct and indirect economic benefit to the city of Milwaukee. Russ Klisch, owner of Lakefront Brewery here in Milwaukee, hosted the Washington State delegation for the RNC earlier today and joins us on the phone. Then we speak with Peter Rickman, president of the Milwaukee Area Service Workers Organization, which represents 1,100 service workers. MASH, an independent union, successfully secured a landmark union contract in 2019 for service workers at the Fiserv Forum, the site of the RNC gathering. Then we dive more into the history of Milwaukee and its "Sewer Socialist" history. We're joined by journalist John Nichols, national affairs correspondent for The Nation where he's just published a new article titled “Welcome Republicans, to America's Great Socialist City.” To talk about the potential for alternative, non-corporate parties in America we bring into the conversation Howie Hawkins, 2020 Green Party candidate for President and retired Teamster.Yesterday on the second night of the RNC the theme of the night was "Make America Safe Once Again," where Republican speakers took to the stage to paint a picture of the country plagued by violent crime. They linked crime with immigration, driving home some of the GOP's top themes in their platform, to seal the border and to deport undocumented immigrants in record numbers. The party offered a lineup of Senate candidates and Americans who said President Joe Biden's immigration policy fueled has fueled the infusion of fentanyl, offering narratives of drug cartels, human trafficking and criminal gangs threatening the safety of people in the US. Anne Fundner of Southern California, whose 15-year-old son Weston died from fentanyl poisoning in 2022, blamed the Biden administration for her son's overdose death from fentanyl. For more, we're joined by Armando Ibarra, Distinguished Achievement Professor in the School for Workers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he holds a joint appointment in Chican@ and Latin@ Studies. His research has focused on, among other things, life narratives of low-wage workers in Milwaukee. He's the co-author of The Latino Question: Politics, Labouring Classes and the Next Left. Then we turn to WXRW reporter Keith Gaustad, who yesterday attended an event held by the Black Republican Mayors Association, hearing from a veritable who's who of Black Republicans. We catch up with Minnesota State Representative Walter Hudson, who joins us in the studio.Turning back to economic justice, one of the more surreal moments of the first night of the RNC was Teamster President Sean O'Brien's blasting Amazon, which is valued at over $2 trillion, for being the 14th largest economy in the world, adding that it was sickening that Amazon had abandoned any national allegiance. With us to talk about the status of global multinationals and the impact on workers and the environment is James Henry, lawyer, economist, investigative journalist, and a Yale Global Justice Fellow.Lastly, as JD Vance prepares to deliver his keynote remarks, we're joined by Jeff Sharlet, an award-winning journalist and professor of English and creative writing at Dartmouth College. His recent book is The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War.
