Is the west on its own healing journey? Shows like "The White Lotus" and the rise of Ayahuasca in the western world show how much we are in need of tools. But we did not create these tools by ourselves. My guest today, Dr. Sergio Perez Rosal is the perfect partner to talk about the idea of bridging different cultural perspectives, acknowledging both the challenges and teachings from various traditions and how to be aware of reciprocity, if it comes to indigenous cultures. Dr. Sergio Pérez Rosal is a pioneer in integrating traditional medicine with psychedelic treatments. With a background in anesthesia and emergency medicine, he advocates for a holistic approach to mental health. His 'Fundamentals of Health' concept combines psychedelics, lifestyle changes, and mindfulness to enhance well-being. As a faculty member in the University of Ottawa's Psychedelic and Consciousness Studies program, he leads in psychedelic research and education. Featured in his TEDX talk and outlets like Forbes, Sergio envisions a future where health is cultivated through the transformative power of psychedelics. What you should know: Cultural Crisis: The West faces a crisis not just of mental health but of meaning, driven by materialism and disconnection from spiritual values.Romanticization of Other Cultures: There is a tendency to overly romanticize Eastern and Indigenous cultures as solutions to Western spiritual emptiness, overlooking their complexities and challenges. The use of psychedelics in these cultures Importance of Reciprocity: Engaging with Indigenous practices requires an understanding of reciprocity, respect, and cultural sensitivity, fostering true intercultural exchange.Psychedelic Integration: Successful outcomes from psychedelic experiences depend on proper guidance, intention, and post-experience integration rather than relying solely on the materials themselves.Building Bridges: Initiatives that merge Western and Indigenous perspectives can create a deeper understanding of consciousness and healing, benefiting both communities in navigating the complexities of mental health and spirituality.Check out @search_md on IG Hosted on Acast. What does it mean to understand death? For centuries, philosophers have argued that only humans can truly comprehend mortality. But what if they're wrong? In this episode, we speak with philosopher Susana Monsó, author of Playing Possum: How Animals Understand Death, to explore whether animals can grasp their own mortality. From grieving elephants to corpse-removing ants and possums that play dead, we investigate what animal behavior reveals about their concept of death. Do dogs understand when their owners pass away? Do predators recognize a corpse as different from prey? And what does this mean for how we treat animals?

As educators, a great deal of our understandings of what learning is has been dominated by behaviourist (check out previous episode with Carol Sanford) and cognitivist ideas, but what if our decisions about how we design learning environments, and think about pedagogy and curriculum had taken in ecological insights of Eleanor Gibson and James Gibson and the branch of psychology known as ecological psychology. So few educators know that such a sub-discipline even exists!Rather than individual students's brains neatly arranged in rows in intentionally informationally impoverished learning environments to compute information and construct meaning in a meaningless world out there, we might have young people as object-environment systems moving around and exploring informationally rich environments to fine-tune their action-perception through multi-sensory relating to the ecologies that they participate in! Sounds like a pretty different world! This episode welcomes Miguel Segundo-Ortín and Vicente Raja, post-doctoral researchers at the MINT Lab, and research fellows at University of Murcia, Spain. Stuart Hameroff MD is Professor of Anesthesiology and Psychology, and Director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Hameroff became interested in intelligent behavior of microtubules, protein lattices which organize activities within living cells. Hameroff and colleagues developed theories of microtubules as self-organizing molecular computers. In the 1990s Hameroff teamed with Sir Roger Penrose on the controversial Penrose-Hameroff "Orch OR" model of consciousness based on quantum computing in brain neuronal microtubules, a notion bolstered by recent evidence. Hameroff also organizes the biennial interdisciplinary conferences, The Science of Consciousness Conference. In this prize-winning essay for the 2021 Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest, Dr. Ruickbie examines the evidence for the survival of consciousness after death (“life after death”). Initially skeptical, he found that there was sufficient evidence from a wide variety of sources, including apparitions, reincarnation, near-death experiences, after-death communication, and premonitions, that met the contest's criteria of being “beyond reasonable doubt.”Such claims are often dismissed as contravening the laws of physics; however, Ruickbie takes the ground-breaking approach of organizing the evidence as eye-witness testimony to the "block" universe (in which past, present and future exist at the same time) described by Albert Einstein and Hermann Minkowski; and finds further support in the latest theories and findings of Quantum Physics for what Ruickbie calls “timetanglement” and “cloud consciousness.” Using a novel framework inspired by Charles Dickens, this is a readable and convincing account of a complex and highly debated subject.BioDr Leo Ruickbie, FRHistS, FRAI, ARPS, PhD (Lond), MA, BA (Hons), ACIQ, Associate of King's College London, is a Visiting Fellow in Psychology at the University of Northampton, where he is a member of the Exceptional Experiences and Consciousness Studies research group.Described as a ‘leading historian and sociologist of the paranormal' by the Daily Express newspaper (print) and ‘a leading expert on the paranormal‘ (express.co.uk online), Dr Ruickbie specialises in controversial areas of human belief and experience, sometimes called ‘exceptional human experiences'. A phrase coined by Rhea White in 1990, exceptional human experience is ‘an umbrella term for many types of experience generally considered to be psychic, mystical, encounter-type experiences, death-related experiences, and experiences at the upper end of the normal range, such as creative inspiration, exceptional human performance' (White, 1994:5).Dr Ruickbie is closely involved in the work of the Society for Psychical Research as a member of Council, former Editor of its Magazine and a member of its Spontaneous Cases Committee. We explore how this theory challenges mainstream neuroscience, which often reduces the mind to simple neural activity, and instead suggests that consciousness may have a profound connection to the universe's underlying structure.   Throughout the conversation, Stuart addresses the debate over AI consciousness, asserting that true conscious experience cannot arise from mere computation but requires quantum processes. He shares insights on the latest experiments in anesthesia and quantum biology, offering a fresh perspective on how the brain might function on a deeper, quantum level.   Join us as we unpack the groundbreaking Orch OR theory and what it could mean for the future of science, technology, and our understanding of reality.   Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell to stay updated on the latest cutting-edge discussions in AI, quantum theory, and consciousness research!     Stay Updated: Craig Smith Twitter: https://twitter.com/craigss Eye on A.I. We discuss.. giving ourselves the space to feel heartbreak and grief; living in sanist culture; surrogate partner therapy; how the Wheel of Consent can support psychedelic communities with some of the common struggles we're seeing in the movement, and an upcoming retreat for psychedelic practitioners to learn and practice the Wheel of Consent. Britta Love (they/she) weaves between the worlds of conscious sexuality and psychedelic ritual, with a through line of social justice and embodied consent. They became an advocate for sex worker's rights as an undergraduate at the London School of Economics and Social Sciences in 2007 and have been a writer and activist pushing for the decriminalization of drugs and sex work ever since. Britta is a certified somatic sex educator through the Institute for the Study of Somatic Sex Education, has trained with Betty Martin's School of Consent and is a certified circle keeper with the Planning Change Restorative Justice Certification Program under the tutelage of Kay Pranis. Britta is currently completing a research-based memoir about healing and awakening through altered states induced by sex and psychedelics, based on her Consciousness Studies thesis at Goddard College. They are also in the process of launching the Sex Strike // Strike for Pleasure in response to the US abortion bans. Their embodied experience as a queer, neurodivergent, sex working femme navigating complex trauma and chronic illness are integral to their work. Christof Koch is a neuroscientist who studies consciousness, and is best known for integrated information theory. IIT is a consciousness-first theory, which states that the experience of being someone (or something) is directly related to the causal powers of the underlying system. Up until relatively recently, Koch was something of a materialist - he believed that it would be possible to find the specific series of neural events in the brain that produce lived experience. A series of events, which he details in his new book "The I Am Myself the World" have led him to embrace more of an idealist perspective, which says that we are instantiations of a a much larger universal consciousness that permeates the universe. We talk to him about his transformation, the nature of consciousness and will, what it "causal powers" of a system have to do with consciousness, and the value of mystical experiences. Dr Luca Turin is a biophysicist, writer, and perfume connoisseur whose work on fragrances seems to suggest that we don't smell molecules, per se - we smell the complex vibrations of an atomic structure. Turin came to be convinced of this model for olfaction at the expense of the standard model of receptors binding smell molecules just on the basis of their shape due to a prediction he made about the smell of sulfur. If the pungent odor of rotten eggs and brimstone was due to the vibrational frequency of the sulfur atom attached to the molecule, then any other atom with a similar vibrational frequency, no matter its shape, should also smell of sulfur. He found a compatible molecule in an unexpected place, and the rest fell into place. We talk about his nascent passion for perfumes, why people are so reluctant to smell things, and the overlap between smell, resonance, and consciousness. This week's guest, Jessica Bockler is one of those people who sparks every fire in my being - and i hope in yours, too.  Jessica is an applied theatre practitioner and transpersonal psychologist who co-founded the Alef Trust a globally-conscious non-profit organisation offering online graduate education programmes, and open learning courses for people who want really to step into what Indy Johar so beautifully calls the emergent edge of Inter-Becoming. Jessica is integral to the Nurturing the Fields of Change Programme that brings people together from diverse walks of life to create an emerging community of practice around change - and she's Programme Director for the Trust's academic programmes in Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology. She teaches on a range of topics, bringing spiritual perspectives to activism and social change - so you can begin to see why I find her work so enthralling. She stands at that nexus where transpersonal psychology meets shamanic practice, where being and becoming are an art and a practice in themselves, grounded in modern science - not the reductive, Head Mind science of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but twenty-first century science where complexity and systems thinking lie at the heart of all we do, where we recognise that only by becoming fully present in the moment, can we access the whole, vast intelligence of the All That Is and find what is ours to do. Jessica brings all this into being in social prescribing programmes, in theatre, in change facilitation, in the MSc at Liverpool John Moores University and in her daily life and she shares it in the conversation you're about to hear - including a clip of one of her own practices, that is solid podcasting gold.  If you're interested in finding out how we can access our own inner intelligence and build with others to co-create the foundations of that more flourishing future we'd be proud to leave behind, then this is the podcast for you.  ALEF Trust  https://aleftrust.org Nurturing the Fields of Change https://www.aleftrust.org/alef-applied/nurturing-the-fields-of-change-programme/MSc in Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology https://www.aleftrust.org/academic-learning/masters-degree/Live Event: Healing Humanity, 1st June 2024, Broughton Sanctuary, Yorkshire eventbrite.co.uk/e/healing-humanity-imagination-embodiment-and-community-tickets-887551710057 Workshop: Embodied Imagination for Social Change, 2nd & 3rd September, Oxford eurotas2024.com/pre-post-conference-workshops/towards-emergence-embodied-play-and-sourcing-for-transformation Conference, 4 – 8 Sept, Oxford: Creative Bridges: embodied consciousness, psyche & soul in research and practice eurotas2024.comNational Academy for Social Prescribing https://socialprescribingacademy.org.uk/Inner Green Deal  https://innergreendeal.com/

Born in San Diego, Vincent spent most of his life in the South. After graduating from military school in 95, he immediately started a career on industrial boats and spent 20+ years from deckhand at the age of 18 to captain at 39 when he changed careers. After a shooting incident at his home and the resulting aftermath of having his son be suspected, and subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder, Vincent suffered PTSD. So began a lengthy course of destructive behavior so intense he was invited to enter in a psilocybin treatment study at Johns Hopkins Center for Consciousness Studies in order to be treated with psilocybin. That treatment changed everything and he became so grateful to the change, he dedicated himself to bringing that same treatment to others. Since then Vincent has spent the last 6 years in the mushroom business refusing to return to the waters he was familiar navigating. He started growing laboratory strains, to hunting and farming wild ones outdoors. He spent two years studying shamanism and plant medicine in Northern Alaska and then to Las Vegas to openly provide on the streets as his own mobile pop-up shop. Now he resides in New Orleans, in the hopes to bring the healing powers of all medicinal plants to the open market. Connect with Eric's ADHD Experience on Social:

My guest for this episode is Sharon Hewitt Rawlette. Sharon is a philosopher who writes for both popular and scholarly audiences on the topics of consciousness, anomalous experience, ethics, and spirituality. She has a PhD in philosophy from New York University and taught at Brandeis University before launching her career as an independent writer and researcher. She is also the founder and director of the Mind & Meaning Institute, which brings together world-class researchers to explore new philosophical and empirical approaches to the deepest questions raised by human experience. Soon after leaving academia for a career as an independent writer and researcher, Sharon became interested in the phenomenon of “coincidence” or “synchronicity”: strange, enigmatic experiences that aren't blatantly paranormal but that seem so improbably meaningful that they make us wonder whether something more than chance lies behind them. Her May 2019 book, The Source and Significance of Coincidences, presents a wealth of evidence concerning the statistical importance of coincidences, their range of possible causes, and how we can best interpret their implications for our lives. In November 2021, Sharon was named a runner-up in the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies essay contest for her essay “Beyond Death.” This essay summarises and analyses the best evidence for life after death collected over the last 150 years. I begin the interview by talking about what first interested her in anomalous and strange experiences and how that developed as a student, into academia, and becoming an independent researcher. We then discuss her work on coincidences, before focusing on her essay Beyond Death, exploring some of the Third Person and First Person evidence that she collected for that and how scientific research might progress when it comes to investigating the survival of human consciousness. Further information on Sharon and her research can be found at https://sharonrawlette.com/. If you would like to support the upkeep of Some Other Sphere you can make a donation via Ko-fi. Bonnitta Roy is an author and a teacher. Her work focuses on breaking away from limiting patterns of thought. She is the founder of Alderlore Insight Centre, a non-profit educational organisation focusing on secondary education and insight training for post-formal thinkers. She is Professor in Residence for the MA in Consciousness Studies and Transpersonal Psychology at the Graduate Institute, and an Associate Editor of Integral Review. Bonnitta is among a brilliant cast of metamodern thinkers. In this regard, her work considers how the sense of crisis many of us feel has as much to do with how we perceive the world as with what goes on within it. We are living through a period of disruptive change and Bonnitta sees these times as an invitation to grapple with the limitations of our inherited toolbox of linear and causal ways of thinking. In this episode we reflect on the limitations of human consciousness and discuss the potential for good that stems from reimagining the way we think.
