POPULARITY
In September 2002, the Russian pop duo t.A.T.u. released their smash single "All The Things She Said." The song is a grungy euro-dance track, and the video features the lead singers Lena Katina and Julia Volkova dressed in schoolgirl uniforms and making out in the rain. The video was banned from UK television for being "not really suitable for children." That did not stop the song from becoming a global sensation. It topped the charts in 13 countries, and in the United States the duo would perform the song over and over on live television. During performances, they made a point to do as they did in their video and make out.But here's the thing: neither Katina or Volkova identified as lesbians or queer at the time. From Harry Styles to Katy Perry, debates over queerbaiting have raged online, and t.A.T.u.'s "All The Things She Said" fits squarely in that lineage. But despite roleplaying as lesbians for their own success, is there something redeemable in how they represented lesbianism at a time when no one else would put two women kissing on camera? And how should we look at this song today? It's Been A Minute senior producer Barton Girdwood talked this out with Girls Can Kiss Now author, Jill Gutowitz. You can email us at IBAM@npr.org.

Today's episode we discuss how to finesse VIP tickets at any event and how we where able to get into the green room while seeing DJ Diesel (AKA Shaq) preform in Melbourne. This is followed by our thoughts on Bad Bunny kissing his back-up dancer during the VMA's and the following outcry of people saying he is 'queerbaiting'. Wether this term can be applied to Bad Bunny or other acts like Harry Styles brings about an interesting debate on how people with major insecurities about their sexuality display extremely 'unique' behaviors. We end the episode on Aries Spears and how he 'fat-shamed' Lizzo for no apparent reason.

Queerbaiting is a topic that was heavily discussed quite recently on Twitter after an unfavorable thread on queerbaiting in Kpop written by Openly, a Twitter page dedicated to LGBTQ+ news. Come join us as we discuss what queerbaiting actually is, how it's used across media/entertainment, and how some people can easily misuse the term.
On Sunday, Billie Eilish took to Instagram to post photos from her "Lost Cause" video shoot and say that she loves girls, setting off a firestorm online about either her sexuality, support of women or her intent to "Queerbait" in order to sell records. Tonight, we'll explain the marketing practice of queerbaiting and decide if that's what Billie is doing. Next, we are joined by the hosts of a popular Youtube show called the CTS Interview Room that mixes commentary about sports with a healthy dose of humor. We close the show talking about Dr. Dre donating a new high school to Los Angeles and we try to determine what some of the classes and extra curricular activities at Dr. Dre High will be. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tmihollywood/support

Erster Schritt: Bury your gaze! Mehr Informationen und Shownotes wie immer auf der Mädchenmannschaft
