Opening weekend for Marvel’s Black Panther has come and gone and after all has been said, done, and counted, it’s only right that for Black History Month the movie made history. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ryan Coogler’s new classic is estimated to be grossing a cool $404 million worldwide with $201.8 mil coming domestically for the three-day President’s Day weekend. After only three days a movie with a $200 million dollar budget is already in the black. Gotta love it! In related news, Rapper Kendrick Lamar is celebrating after helping Black Panther: The Album leap to the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Black love, pride and star power is everywhere. It appears Young Thug is borrowing a page from the Sean Combs/Puff Daddy/Diddy playbook. The Atlanta rhymer announced on Twitter that he wants to be referred to by another name - "SEX"? Why am I not surprised. Toni Braxton finally confirmed what we already knew – that the “Unbreak My Heart” singer is engaged to dirty south music mogul Bryan Christopher Williams, a.k.a. Birdman. If Braxton is happy, then I am happy for her. And I look forward to hearing how “Bryan” has been phenomenal to her when the new season of Braxton Family Values premieres on WeTV in March. This weekend Fergie sang the National Anthem for the NBA All Star game. Y’all know Fergie she always puts her own unique spin on performances. And her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” was no exception. This time she opted for a sultry, jazzy feel. Despite what seemed like real effort on her part, it just didn’t go over that well. Geraldo responds to Kendrick Lamar’s new album ‘DAMN’ where the popular rapper appears to be throwing shade on his third song “YAH.” The second verse, Lamar names Fox News and Rivera directly: “Fox News wanna use my name for percentage/My latest news in my niece, she’s worth livin/See me on the TV and scream ‘That’s Uncle Kendrick!’/Yeah that’s the business/Somebody tell Geraldo this n*gga got some ambition.” This is no doubt a response to Geraldo’s critique of Lamar’s 2015 BET Awards performance with cop killer lyrics “We hate po-po/Wanna kill us dead in the street fo sho” standing atop a vandalized police car with the American in the background. At the time Geraldo said on ‘The Five’: “this is why I say that hip-hop has done more damage to young African Americans that racism in recent years…. It is so wrong, it is so counterproductive, it gives exactly the wrong message.” Lamar plays the clip on his second song DNA.
