Nine candidates for mayor faced off in a two-hour debate on WNBC, co-sponsored by Telemundo and Politco this week. The debate marked the first time Andrew Cuomo was on the stage with his fellow candidates. The mayoral frontrunner withstood the bulk of attacks from his rivals. On the heels of the debate came Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's endorsements for the mayoral race. NY1 investigative reporter Courtney Gross, and political reporters Bobby Cuza and Ayana Harry, recap the highlights from Wednesday night's contest. After that, the "Off Topic" team turns to another election: the governor's race next year. Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado announced he would primary Gov. Kathy Hochul next year — a clear indication of how much their relationship has deteriorated. The team assesses how vulnerable the governor may be next year. Hour 1 Daniel Jones essentially said goodbye to Giants fans and Rex Ryan went on ESPN Radio and really, really wants the Jets job. We talked about what Rex would be like if he returned. Gio wouldn't do it as he thinks it feels pathetic to go back to when you last felt good about the team. Boomer said there are going to be 6 head coaching jobs open and Boomer expects Rob Saleh to get some interviews. Boomer would consider re-hiring Rex, but he wants to see who the other candidates are. Jerry is here for his first update of the day and starts with the sounds of the Browns beating the Steelers in the snow. Daniel Jones read a prepared statement to the press expressing his gratitude. Jerry has audio of Rex Ryan saying he's ‘all about the Jets' and ‘nobody's better than me'. Aaron Judge won the A.L. MVP. In the final segment of the hour, Stu Feiner wants to wear the ball-hammock underwear on stage with nothing else on. We declined. We talk about past B&G Live events as we get ready for our show at the Paramount tonight. Hour 2 News 12 Long Island did a piece on the live show we're doing tonight at the Paramount. We got into the Daniel Jones situation. He met the media yesterday and read a prepared piece where he was thanking the fans and the Giants for the opportunity. He did get emotional, which we've never seen before from him. We talked about the frustration Brian Daboll was clearly feeling in some of these games because of Jones' play. We talked about the NFL draft and who the Giants could get at quarterback. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of the Browns beating the Steelers in a ‘Winter Wonderland in Cleveland'. Jerry has audio of Daniel Jones talking about not playing well enough and understanding why the Giants made the move. Gronk wants Jon Gruden for the Jets. Aaron Judge won the A.L. MVP and thanked Juan Soto. In the final segment of the hour, Jason Kelce ran into another moron looking for an autograph that was just a total turd (the autograph seeker). Hour 3 We started with audio from 2014 when Rex Ryan sat down with Andrea Kramer and said that Woody wanted him to be the head coach for 25 years, but you couldn't bring another GM to work with him. As far as Jon Gruden goes, it seems like there will be other teams interested in him, so he will not go to the Jets. Gio called the Jets, a ‘cesspool of an organization'. Boomer disagreed with that. Dr. Joe calls in. He's the guy who told us back in June that Dave Sims was getting the Yankees job. He said Suzyn Waldman threw the name out there. He called back to apologize to, I think, Suzyn. He said she has cut him out of her life. Jerry returns for an update and has the audio from the moron harassing Jason Kelce as he was leaving the Jimmy Kimmel Show. Chad Ochocinco couldn't believe how boring the NFL has been until the 4th quarter hits. Jerry has audio of Daniel Jones reading his statement on how things have gone with the Giants. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the farce that was the Tyson/Paul fight. Hour 4 Malik Nabers said that Brian Daboll told him Tommy DeVito will get the ball right where it needs to be so he better be ready as soon as he makes the cut on his route. We expect the Bucs to blitz DeVito a lot. Sam Darnold will most likely be available next season. Jerry returns for his final update of the day, but first, Chuck Scarborough is stepping down after 50 years at WNBC. Tony Garcia's journey through the radio industry over the past four decades provides a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of syndicated content and the changing landscape of the medium. From his early days as an intern at the iconic WNBC in New York during the 1980s, Tony's enthusiasm for radio was palpable, as he recounted the excitement of being part of the station's shift from album rock to the burgeoning new wave scene. This passion led Tony to create his own syndicated show, "Wave Breaker," while at WNYU. Through sheer determination and a willingness to learn on the job, he navigated the complexities of distribution, leveraging techniques like bulk-erasing tapes to get the show into the hands of eager college radio stations across the country, and in Europe. This laid the foundation for Tony's deep understanding of the syndication business, which he would go on to apply in roles at companies like Progressive Radio Network and the Wall Street Journal Report.Tony's insights into the strategies employed by media giants like Dow Jones, who adeptly repurposed content across their various platforms, underscores the importance of adaptability in an ever-changing industry. The transition from vinyl to CDs, and eventually digital distribution, further highlights Tony's ability to evolve with the times, always seeking to provide the most efficient and cost-effective solutions for his clients. The story of Tony's involvement with the Bob & Sheri show, from the initial challenges to the eventual triumph, exemplifies his knack for identifying and nurturing talent. By enabling ownership of their IP and digital presence, Tony demonstrated a keen understanding of the value of intellectual property in an increasingly fragmented media landscape. As Tony looks ahead to the future, his enthusiasm for the potential of hyper-local podcasts and the continued expansion of Bob & Sheri, and publishing ventures reflects a visionary mindset.A video and transcript of the episode can be found on the network website. Please sign up for the SOUNDING OFF Newsletter. He was the undisputed holder of the singing crown, and if you've tuned into WNBC during the holidays, you know there's one cherished tradition that New Yorkers and employees eagerly await. Our next guest was the pied piper; you'll hear how he managed everyone to play-a-long! He had the prestigious role of playing the bouncer at the legendary Saturday Night Live after-parties! And indulging in Sunday Morning Football is a treat, but our next guest took it to the next level with his mini gambling haven nestled in the heart of 30 Rock! I'll bet you're going to love this story! Also, our next guest IS NOT THE FATHER, but he could be an uncle! Tune in to discover how crossing paths with Maury Povich was life-changing! He'll also share heartfelt memories of a dear friend who left this world too soon. However, after you hear the tales about this friend, there's no doubt he's up there looking down, enjoying a good laugh. Never underestimate NBC security—they've earned their stripes, and their stories pack a punch. Get ready to hear why you should never mess around with the force that is NBC security! He's set to offer a toast to Matt Lauer before the infamous scandal unfolded; hear his unique perspective. In the 90s, crime families held a firm grip on the city, but one man sought to tell their stories for WNBC News. Remarkably, this individual ascended to become the Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism for the NYPD and, before that, he worked for the FBI and ABC News. Our next guest will reveal how his friendship with this man played a transformative role in his life. And if that wasn't enough, you'll hear a tale of how both chased the elusive Zodiac killer! Please tune in to discover the wild story of how he found himself on the receiving end of a memorable beatdown during the taping of Donahue! He boasts an impressive resume as an Executive Producer, Producer, and Writer, contributing his talents to renowned projects such as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, Training Day, Agent X, the TV series Numbers, Arrest & Trial, and even clinching an Academy Award for the impactful film Twin Towers! Don't miss this exciting episode of "A Page in History," featuring Mr. Rob Port!

Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963—and his decision to go public with that discovery, first to NBC News, then to the Library of Congress. Audio highlights this segment include the first news bulletin, read by Don Pardo (then-booth announcer for WNBC, the NBC affiliate in New York) at approximately 1:45pm ET on Nov. 22, 1963, announcing the shooting of President Kennedy. TVC 627.1: From November 2013: A special joint edition of The Sounds of Lost Television and This Week in TV History featuring Phil Gries, Tony Figueroa, and Donna Allen that looks back at how network television news covered the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963 and the events that followed over the next three days—a seminal moment in U.S. history and in the life of Phil Gries and many other Baby Boomers; a seminal moment in the history of network TV news; and, in many respects, a seminal moment in the history of Phil's company, Archival Television Audio. Phil happened to be home on the afternoon of Friday, Nov. 22, 1963, watching the NBC daytime documentary program Tell Us More on local NBC affiliate WNBC, when a news bulletin read by announcer Don Pardo interrupted regular programming at approximately 1:45pm ET and announced that President Kennedy had been “cut down by an assassin's bullet.” However, due to the technical limitations of TV broadcasting at the time, NBC had no tape of either the Pardo bulletin or the opening minutes of its own news coverage. For more than twenty years, those moments were considered lost, until it was discovered circa 1988 that only Phil had the presence of mind to make an audio recording on his own that day while watching television at home.  Want to advertise/sponsor our show? Did you ever wonder who decided that all the sparkling lights in the night sky had meaning for us? We'll never know for sure, but for centuries astrologers have known that the patterns of the planets reflect patterns in our own life development. Where they were when we were born can give us insights on how we'll live our lives and even predict how we'll react in certain situations. We take a look at the world of astrology and what it can teach us with master astrology Elisabeth Grace. She began her love of astrology in her teens and has made it her mission to use her enthusiasm to explain astrology in a way that's fun and meaningful to non-professionals. In this lively conversation, Elisabeth tells us:• how to translate astrology into English• what The New York Times has in common with astrology• what 20th Century U.S. President was known as a “stud muffin” (Hint: it's not JFK)• how astrology can reflect what you believe• what Pluto has to do with our economy• how astrology tells us who's really running the showElisabeth Grace graduated from Wellesley College with a BA in Philosophy. Her favorite philosophy class was Symbolic Logic, which Professor Google defines as: …the science of reasoning, the science of separating good arguments from bad ones. A good or logical argument is one that is truth-preserving, i.e., one that always takes us from true premises to a true conclusion. After graduation, she hitchhiked around Europe, where she'd spent part of her childhood. Back in the States, she landed a gig at a film studio in New York and eventually moved to Los Angeles. She found her niche in Hollywood first as a copywriter — and then as a writer/producer — of advertising for movies and television.Elisabeth began doing astrological consultations in 1992. In 2000, she returned to New York and scattered her marketing pixie-dust over television news, with stints at WNBC, NBC and CNBC. When she started working in a newsroom, that's when she began to notice the astonishing synchronicity of daily planetary patterns with daily headlines. Compelled to share her findings with the world she launched a blog in 2009. Meanwhile, she earned her professional certification from the International Society of Astrological Research (ISAR). She completed Noel Tyl's rigorous master's program in psychological astrology, graduating with highest honors. She studied horary astrology with Lee Lehman and earned a professional certificate in horary astrology from the School of Traditional Astrology.Elisabeth has lectured at conferences in the U.S. and Tokyo. Published in Dell Horoscope, and quoted in other fine publications. Columnist (“Charts in the News,”) for The Mountain Astrologer , with eternal gratitude to TMA founder Tem Tarriktar. Podcast listeners can find her on the bi-weekly “Off the Charts: A Stellar Newscast,” (with co-host Whitney Fishburn); weekly on “2022: The Year of Love” (hosted by Alison Woo); and on “The Maverick Podcast” (hosted by Kathy Rose).Elisabeth also creates workshops for corporate clients, with a focus on using astrology as a tool for improving workplace relationships. Breaking Walls

By January of 1949 Fred Allen was worn out. He'd spent years battling with sponsors and with NBC. In December of 1948 his Sunday at 8:30 rating was a healthy 20 points, but after Edgar Bergen left NBC's airwaves the network moved Allen's show up a half hour to 8PM. Meanwhile on ABC, Stop the Music's popularity was soaring. Allen lost nearly half his audience in a single month. By March Stop The Music's rating would reach 17.6, while Allen's fell to 9.4 and Sam Spade's fell to 11.3 on CBS. Allen was a voracious reader, sometimes scouring ten newspapers a day for topical material. In the end, perhaps he just cared too much. By June with his rating down to an unthinkable 5.8, he'd had enough. The fifty-five year-old called it a seventeen-year radio career after June 26th, 1949. Jack Benny and Henry Morgan were his final guests. Fittingly, the program ran long and Allen's network feed was cut off. Although Fred Allen's program came to a close, he was still under contract to NBC. When the network launched The Big Show, Allen became a regular. The ninety-minute program debuted on November 5th, 1950. It was an attempt to revive NBC's Sunday night ratings. It was hosted by Tallulah Bankhead, written by Goodman Ace with music by Meredith Wilson, announced by Jimmy Wallington, and a rotating star-studded cast. Ace had long been an admirer of Fred's work. Allen appeared on twenty-four of the show's fifty-seven episodes, including the landmark premiere. Each episode cost over one-hundred thousand dollars to produce. Hopes were high. Before the show's launch the entire cast flew out to London for a lavish publicity stunt. Although Allen was as funny as ever, the British press was unimpressed and the show was a flop. Amazingly the show was brought back for a second season, but by the end NBC had lost a million dollars and made no dent into CBS's Sunday night ratings. After the final broadcast on April 20, 1952, Fred Allen was happy to walk away. Allen did eventually break into television, first as the emcee of Judge For Yourself, and finally as a regular panel guest on the CBS quiz show, What's My Line. Between 1954 and 1956 he also worked as a newspaper columnist and as a memoirist, renting a small New York office to work without distractions. There he wrote Treadmill to Oblivion, published in 1954, which reviewed his radio and television years, and Much Ado About Me, published in 1956, which covered the early years of his life. Treadmill was the best-selling book on radio's classic period for many years. When it was published, he appeared on the Tex and Jinx radio show out of WNBC in New York on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, November 24th, 1954 to talk about his career. The show was broadcast from Peacock Alley at The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The weather was dreary, which only added to Fred's usual sense of sarcastic humor. By 1954 Allen already had a heart attack. Always a letter-writer, he reflected upon the lifestyle changes he was forced to adopt in a note to friend Doc Rockwell. Taking a late night stroll up New York's West 57th Street on a blustery, cold Saturday night — St. Patrick's Day, 1956, Allen suffered a heart attack and died on the spot. Fred Allen was 61. Due to the public nature of his death, reporters were quick to arrive at the scene. The next day's Sunday Daily News cover featured a photo of his body with the headline “Fred Allen Dies in Street.” His death sent the entertainment industry into deep mourning. Jack Benny was profoundly shaken. In truth, as funny as Benny was, he was never exactly the same without his old sparring partner. During the following night's Sunday broadcast of What's My Line? host John Daly preceded the program with a special message to the viewing audience. Steve Allen took Fred's place on the panel. During the final ninety seconds of the program Steve Allen, Arlene Francis and Bennett Cerf gave heartfelt tributes to Fred.

Jarl Mohn on Art and the Art of Media Management

Insider Interviews

Just skim the career path of my first guest for Season 2 of Insider Interviews and you'll understand why it was worth the wait of my past year on hiatus: It's Jarl Mohn, former President and CEO of NPR...and E! Entertainment Television, the network he also created! Jarl's career includes being hand-picked by former radio buddy, Bob Pittman (currently CEO of iHeart Media), to be the first EVP/GM of MTV and VH1. He also spent many years on the boards of The Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, the EW Scripps Company and Scripps Networks, and KPCC Southern California Public Radio where he honed his love of public radio. And, while Jarl hung up his pundit placard to focus on hanging art as he and his wife Pamela endow museums and support emerging artists, his 50+ years in media and venture capital have taught him a thing or two about content and management. He shares 35 minutes of brilliance and humility -- from how his years in foster care sparked an escape route to radio, how quality will separate winners and losers in today's content wars, and how art can literally change the way we think. We go head to, literally, toe on the big picture of media, right down to why his face is on my feet. Yeah, you'll have to keep listening for that one. Or watch the video on YouTube, since good content should span all platforms! The following is a highly edited transcript, including a multitude of links to important resources mentioned. Career Path – Radio to Television E.B.: Jarl, you were my first boss in the cable industry. You started E! Entertainment Television and I was there in the Greg Kinnear and Howard Stern days. Can you share a little chronological route to your career? Jarl: I began my career as a disc jockey when I was 15 years old. I ended up ultimately, in New York at WNBC doing afternoons when I was 25 then got into the programming side of the business, became a general manager and  bought some radio stations. Then one of the people I had worked with at WNBC, Bob Pittman, hired me, along with Tom Preston at MTV and VH1. So, I got into the cable TV business. Then in 1986 we created E! Entertainment Television. I did a stint with John Malone at Liberty Media as CEO of Liberty Digital, which was used to invest in internet companies and some interactive companies. Then venture capital /early stage angel investing for about 16 years. And then I had been involved in public radio in Los Angeles as a board member of KPCC and had the opportunity to become CEO of NPR nationally, for about six years. I finished up my tour of duty in 2019 and returned to Los Angeles. Radio as Escape from Foster Care EB: You shared with me that you had been in a group home in foster care .... Jarl: It was a very difficult thing to experience. I spend some time with foster youth and young adults in Los Angeles County now and have a chance to talk to a number of them. Almost every one, using different language, wants to know how we survived our PTSD or our trauma. ...I hated my existence in that children's home so much that I discovered radio and listened to it nonstop and fantasized about being one of those cool disc jockeys. So, when I got out at 15, I had a chance to go to engineering school, get my FCC license and began working at a radio station. EB: Radio is, of course we talk about it as theater of the mind. I just read an amazing memoir called A Place Called Home by David Ambroz, who actually works at Amazon now, and overcame similar challenges. You both remind us how we all need to support youth so much better and try to improve that world. The Art of Listening EB: Jarl, I knew you when you still used your DJ name, Lee Masters...I remember you would regularly walk the halls of E! Entertainment Television, chatting with every employee, every day. That meant the world to everyone I'm still part of the past-employee Facebook group. I even did an episode last season of Insider Interviews with Darren G.

Joy Reid leads this episode of The ReidOut with the emerging consensus that the war in Ukraine is reaching a stalemate, if it has not already. Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, former member of Ukrainian Parliament, joins us to discuss. Next we discuss how Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was incredibly poised throughout her opening Supreme Court confirmation hearing, some calling her the literal opposite of, in her temperament as well as her qualifications, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh when he went through the process. Senator Cory Booker joins us after expressing the joy, during this hearing, that many feel at seeing Judge Jackson go through the confirmation process as the first Black woman to achieve this milestone. Finally, we discuss what the State Department can do if Vladimir Putin is unwilling to abide by international law and let Americans talk to WNBC star Brittney Griner, who remains detained by the Russian government. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.
