ORD. - ANNO C (Lc 17,5-10)Se aveste fede!di Giacomo Biffi COSA DOBBIAMO VERAMENTE CHIEDERE A DIO NELLA PREGHIERA Che cosa dobbiamo chiedere nella preghiera? Possiamo chiedere tutto quello che vogliamo, perché Dio è un padre che ama ascoltare i balbettii dei suoi piccoli figli (e noi siamo tutti piccoli davanti a lui), anche se non sempre si concede alle loro pretese, perché troppo spesso essi non sanno qual è il loro vero bene. Possiamo chiedere tutto quello che vogliamo, purché ci manteniamo nell'atteggiamento interiore di chi accoglie docilmente la sua volontà. Possiamo chiedere anche i favori materiali che ci sembrano convenienti. Gesù stesso ci ha insegnato a pregare non solo perché venga il Regno di Dio, ma anche perché ci sia assicurato il pane quotidiano. Ma non dobbiamo chiedere solo i favori materiali. Gli apostoli, che tante volte nella narrazione evangelica ci appaiono ancora spiritualmente rozzi e curvi sui valori terreni, questa volta ci danno l'esempio di una richiesta bellissima: Aumenta la nostra fede! (Lc 17,5), dicono al loro Maestro. Un po' di fede l'abbiamo tutti; ma tutti avremmo bisogno di averne di più, perché senza fede è difficile anche vivere decentemente da uomini. Perciò anche noi vogliamo oggi dire: "Aumenta la nostra fede!". LA PREZIOSITÀ DELLA FEDE PER LA NOSTRA VITA Che cos'è la fede? La fede è un affidarsi a Dio, alla sua parola, al suo desiderio di salvarci, alla sua guida sulle strade oscure e faticose dell'esistenza. 1. La fede è sapere che c'è un Padre, che ci ha tratti dal nulla per amore. Non siamo venuti al mondo per sbaglio, senza che nessuno ci abbia né pensato né voluto; e perciò neanche adesso siamo in balìa di un caso irragionevole e gelido: siamo nelle mani di uno che ci vuol bene e non ci abbandona. 2. La fede è sapere che il Figlio di Dio è venuto a farsi uno di noi, perché in lui potessimo avere una vita più intensa e splendente di quella delle creature terrestri che non hanno né consapevolezza né speranza. Credere quindi significa vedere le cose con gli occhi di Cristo, giudicare le idee e gli accadimenti alla luce del suo magistero, diventare capaci di un nuovo modo d'amare gli altri, che è il modo limpido e disinteressato con cui li ama lui. 3. La fede è sapere che lo Spirito santo, mandatoci dal Signore risorto, agisce nei nostri cuori, ci aiuta a distinguere il bene dal male, ci sollecita a camminare sulla strada diritta, ci induce a diventare, in un mondo litigioso e duro, uomini di concordia e di pace. 4. La fede è sapere che c'è per noi una "vita eterna"; c'è una via precisa per arrivarci, attraverso gli atti che ci santificano nei vari momenti del nostro pellegrinaggio di quaggiù; c'è per noi la gioia di appartenere alla Chiesa, che è la famiglia dei figli di Dio e il luogo dell'incontro anticipato col Padre. Non c'è nulla di più bello e di più importante della fede. È l'eredità più preziosa che abbiamo ricevuto dai nostri padri, è quanto di più necessario a vivere sensatamente e senza disperazione possiamo lasciare alle generazioni che verranno. Il mio giusto vive di fede (Ab 2,4), ci ha detto la parola di Dio. Perciò anche noi, che vogliamo essere giusti, come gli apostoli dobbiamo implorare: "Aumenta la nostra fede!". LA FORZA PRODIGIOSA DI UNA FEDE AUTENTICA Ma Gesù ci ha insegnato un'altra cosa che non dobbiamo dimenticare, ed è la grande energia che è contenuta nell'atto del credere: Se aveste fede quanto un granellino di senape, potreste dire a questo gelso: "Sii sradicato e trapiantato in mare", ed esso vi ascolterebbe (Lc 17,6). Nelle pagine di Marco e di Matteo si dice addirittura che un granello di fede rende capaci di trasportare le montagne (cf. Mc 11,23; Mt 17,20). Sono frasi paradossali, ma esprimono una grande verità; ed è che non c'è al mondo una forza paragonabile alla fede. Ce lo insegna anche la storia: tutte le grandi potenze e le grandi prepotenze, che sembrano sempre sul punto di trionfare e di imporsi, o presto o tardi traballano e vanno in rovina, mentre il debole popolo dei credenti c'è sempre a cantare le sue lodi al Dio vivo e vero e a mantenersi nell'attesa fiduciosa del Regno di Dio. DIO NON HA BISOGNO DI NOI, MA NOI ABBIAMO BISOGNO DI LUI C'è infine un terzo punto, nella pagina evangelica che è stata letta, che merita di essere rilevato. Noi siamo i servitori di Dio, non i suoi padroni. Quando abbiamo fatto la sua volontà e gli abbiamo dato l'omaggio del nostro culto, abbiamo fatto solo quanto dovevamo fare (Lc 17,10). Invece ci sono di quelli che, se vengono a messa alla domenica qualche volta, credono di aver fatto un gran piacere al Signore. Hanno fatto solo un piccolo piacere a loro stessi, perché si è meno uomini se ci si dimentica del proprio Dio. La fede è dunque anche la capacità di stare al nostro posto di fronte all'infinità del Padre che è nei cieli, e di saper dire con tutta verità: "Siamo soltanto dei servi di cui tu, o Dio, non hai nessun bisogno, mentre noi abbiamo un tremendo bisogno di te". Allora il Signore ci glorificherà e ci dischiuderà la sua dimora di luce e di gioia, perché sta scritto che, soprattutto davanti al Padrone dell'universo, chi si umilia sarà esaltato (Lc 14,11).

ORD. - ANNO C (Lc 16,19-31) di Giacomo Biffi La Provvidenza ci offre oggi, per la nostra meditazione settimanale, una delle più celebri parabole raccontate dal Signore Gesù: la parabola del ricco e di Lazzaro. È, per così dire, una tragedia in due atti. Il primo atto è collocato in questo mondo e ci presenta due figure fortemente contrapposte; il ricco che vive nell'agiatezza e nel godimento, e il povero, affamato, piagato, trascurato da tutti tranne che dai cani; il secondo atto è ultraterreno, e ci dice che la storia dell'uomo non finisce quaggiù, ma ha un esito nel mondo invisibile, il mondo definitivo e più vero.Ci sono dunque in questo racconto come due versanti: il versante della vita che si conclude con la morte, e il versante della vita che comincia dopo la morte. E ci sono offerti due tipi di insegnamento: in primo luogo ciò che dobbiamo fare per impiegare bene questigiorni fuggevoli che ci sono dati, e poi ciò che dobbiamo attenderci oltre la soglia misteriosa, per la giornata che non conoscerà tramonto.Per quel che si riferisce alla vita presente, la parabola ci insegna soprattutto tre cose.LA TRISTEZZA DI UNA VITA SENZA DIO La prima è che non dobbiamo comportarci come quel ricco gaudente. Ma in che cosa egli è condannabile? Non tanto perché si godeva la vita, quanto perché nei godimenti terreni aveva identificato tutte le sue aspirazioni e tutte le sue speranze. È un uomo senza ideali, senza tensione che non sia la ricerca dei suoi agi e dei suoi piaceri. È un uomo che si appaga di ciò cheriesce ad assaporare giorno per giorno, che confida solo nella potenza delle sue ricchezze, che non si dà nessun pensiero né del suo destino, né della moralità del suo comportamento, né del rapporto personale con la realtà eterna di Dio.Un uomo così - che per molti aspetti può essere considerato la raffigurazione dell'umanità de nostri tempi - è avviato, secondo Gesù, a una tragica sorte. Come ci ha detto il profeta nella prima lettura, guai agli spensierati di Sion e a quelli che si considerano sicuri sulle montagne di Samaria!Insomma, il primo avvertimento che ci dà la parabola sta nell'invito a recuperare la dimensione religiosa dell'esistenza, cioè a dare a Dio - e non ai nostri programmi di benessere - l'attenzione primaria del nostro cuore; a considerare Dio - e non i mezzi offertici dalle nostre bravure e dalle fortune umane - il fondamento della nostra fiducia e della nostra serenità; a fare di Dio - e non dei successi mondani - il vero traguardo al quale tendere con tutte le nostre forze.NON BASTA EVITARE IL MALE, OCCORRE ANCHE FARE IL BENEC'è un altro insegnamento prezioso. Il ricco è condannato non tanto per i suoi vestiti e i suoi banchetti, quanto perché il suo lusso e la sua avidità di godere hanno così rattrappito la sua anima e inaridito il suo cuore che neppure si accorge di avere alla sua porta un essere umano - e quindi un suo fratello - nella miseria e nella sofferenza. È dunque condannato non tanto per quello che fa, ma per quello che non gli viene neanche in mente di fare.Così ci viene detto che non basta evitare il male e non recare danno a nessuno; bisogna anche fare il bene e aiutare positivamente coloro che sono nella necessità.Al momento del giudizio saremo esaminati anche sull'attenzione che avremo saputo dare agli altri, a coloro che, vicino a noi, sono l'immagine del Signore Gesù.LA VITA CRISTIANA NON SI REGGE SUI FATTI STRAORDINARIL'ultima avvertenza della parabola per la vita di quaggiù riguarda il fondamento della fede e della vita cristiana, che non deve essere ricercato nei fenomeni insoliti e prodigiosi - come le apparizioni, le rivelazioni private, i miracoli - ma nella verità divina che ci è presentata dalla Chiesa. A capire le cose che contano e a vivere bene non servono tanto i fatti straordinari; basta - se il cuore è ben disposto - la forza della parola di Dio: Hanno Mosè e i profeti; ascoltino loro.Noi, che abbiamo la fortuna di venire ogni domenica alla scuola del Figlio di Dio, l'unico vero Maestro, dobbiamo radicarci bene nella persuasione che proprio qui possiamo trovare il nutrimento che ci dà l'energia necessaria a mantenerci sulla giusta strada.Chi si apre a questa luce, può vincere ogni debolezza, può superare ogni eventuale sbandamento, può procedere decisamente incontro al Signore.SENZA LA FEDE NELL'ALDILÀ MANCA LO STIMOLO PER FARE IL BENE Ma questa parabola è ancora più importante per le prospettive richiamate sul mondo che sta oltre la morte. Qui è preso di mira direttamente quello scetticismo diffuso che il mondo senza fede in cui viviamo riesce a insinuare anche in coloro che pur si dicono credenti. Oggi non si parla più molto né del Paradiso né dell'Inferno; sembra quasi che li si considerino i residui di una visione fiabesca ormai improponibile.È una insipienza che ci potrebbe procurare dei grossi guai. Gesù oggi ci ricorda vigorosamente che la nostra esistenza si concluderà o con un premio o con una condanna; e proprio perché esiste questo duplice destino ha un significato essere onesti, ha un significato essere generosi, ha un significato vivere.L'uomo, che crede di essere diventato adulto perché si è liberato della convinzione che sta scegliendo tra una salvezza senza insidie e una perdizione senza rimedio, alla fine si trova privo di motivazioni: non ha una motivazione adeguata né per praticare le giustizia né peroperare con bontà né per durare a vivere con fatica.La controprova di questa verità evangelica è sotto i nostri occhi. Le dottrine sociali e politiche, le proposte di comportamento, le abitudini di vita che non riconoscono un al di là - quali che siano le loro etichette e le loro ispirazioni - approdano tutte a costruire un mondo più violento, più disumano, più disperato, dove non ci si difende più dai prevaricatori, dove le leggi e i castighi non bastano più a fronteggiare la malvagità e il disordine.Come si vede, la parola di Gesù è dura, aspra, forse sgradita al nostro palato troppo delicato, ma è salutare e feconda. La verità di Dio non è mai compiacente: contesta sempre i miti carezzevoli, i pensieri troppo dolci e leggeri, le sciocche spensieratezze, chetroppo spesso trovano accoglienza nel nostro cuore.Noi abbiamo bisogno di essa. Abbiamo bisogno che ci venga proposta con coraggio, senza arbitrarie riduzioni, senza travisamenti. Alla fine è solo la verità di Dio che resta, e solo affidandoci alla verità di Dio noi ci possiamo salvare.

ORD. - ANNO C (Lc 16,1-13)Non potete servire Dio e la ricchezzadi Giacomo Biffi Questa che abbiamo ascoltato è senza dubbio la più sconcertante parabola del Signore. In essa Gesù prende a paragone un fatto che doveva essere molto frequente nel mondo antico, ma che, a giudicare da quel che spesso si legge sui giornali, non deve essere del tutto raro neppure nel mondo di oggi, che pure ha condizioni sociali ed economiche molto diverse.È il caso di un amministratore disonesto che si trova di fronte a un'improvvisa verifica del suo operato e quindi deve di punto in bianco fronteggiare la prospettiva della propria imminente rovina.La stranezza del racconto sta in questo, che il furfante (che se la cava imbrogliando una volta di più) viene lodato dal padrone e parrebbe addirittura proposto ai discepoli di Cristo come modello. Ma non dobbiamo dimenticare che qui si tratta di una parabola; e non tutti gli elementi di una parabola sono trasferibili nell'insegnamento, ma solo quelli che vengono intesi e indicati come tali. Nello stesso modo, ad esempio, quando Gesù, per descrivere la sua seconda venuta alla fine dei tempi, parla del ladro che viene a rubare di notte, vuole solo ricordare che il suo ritorno sarà una sorpresa, e non intende affatto, paragonando se stesso al ladro, esaltare il furto come un'azione lodevole.Qui è indubbio che il comportamento del protagonista della parabola è disapprovato, tanto è vero che viene chiamato esplicitamente "disonesto".Qual è allora l'aspetto del racconto che ci viene presentato come caricato di un insegnamento di vita? Mi pare che, senza forzature e senza acrobazie dialettiche, se ne possano trovare due. L'INVITO A FARE IL BENE CON LA STESSA "ASTUZIA" DI CHI FA IL MALE1. È in primo luogo l'abilità e la prontezza di riflessi con cui il furfante riesce a cavarsela dai suoi guai, tanto da strappare perfino l'ammirazione del derubato.Gesù fa un'osservazione che purtroppo ogni giorno è comprovata dall'esperienza: I figli di questo mondo... sono più scaltri dei figli della luce. È con questa frase implicitamente esprime anche il suo rammarico e il suo desiderio che i buoni diventino più svegli e più intraprendenti. Una delle disgrazie dell'umanità sta proprio qui: troppo spesso il male è fatto bene, con impegno, con intelligenza, con tenacia; e troppo spesso il bene è fatto male, senza passione, senza genialità, senza costanza, presentato in forme scolorite e prive di fascino.Con stupore e con meraviglia vediamo che i "figli della luce", cioè coloro che hanno gli occhi illuminati dalla fede e che, possedendo le verità che contano per l'esistenza, sanno dare il giusto valore alle cose e conoscono il senso e la fine della storia umana, sono più indecisi, fiacchi, incoerenti nell'agire. Mentre quelli che sciaguratamente si sono posti al servizio della menzogna e della ingiustizia sono di solito tanto abili e attivi.Non sta scritto da nessuna parte nel Vangelo che i buoni debbano essere sprovveduti, che i cristiani debbano essere degli incapaci, che i discepoli di Cristo debbano caritatevolmente aiutare gli avversari con la loro stupidità, facendosi incantare dai capziosi ragionamenti degli altri e mettendosi quasi al loro servizio per amore del dialogo, della comprensione,della mitezza o, più verosimilmente, del quieto vivere. Sta scritto precisamente il contrario, come appare dalla lettura di oggi. Confrontate col pensiero di Cristo, molte vicende della cristianità italiana di questi vent'anni trovano qui un giudizio severo.L'"ASTUZIA SPIRITUALE" DELLA GENEROSITÀ VERSO GLI ALTRI2. Il secondo insegnamento della parabola è di dirci che tutti noi siamo di fronte a Dio nella condizione dell'amministratore infedele. Anche noi abbiamo prevaricato; abbiamo abusato della fiducia del Creatore, che ci ha regalato la vita perché ne usassimo per la giustizia; siamo nei suoi confronti oberati da debiti spaventosi; il nostro stato è fallimentare.Ogni giorno che passa si avvicina il momento del rendiconto, quando tutte le nostre menzogne saranno scoperte e noi saremo nella situazione imbarazzante di non saper rispondere alle contestazioni precise e incontrovertibili del nostro Padrone.Ebbene, Gesù ci dice che c'è un modo per salvarci dalla prevedibile condanna e dalla catastrofe; ed è quello di essere generosi verso il prossimo del nostro perdono, del nostro tempo, del nostro interessamento, del nostro denaro. È, in fondo, ciò che suggeriscela preghiera del Padre nostro: Rimetti a noi i nostri debiti, come noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori. È vero che elargendo agli altri le nostre cose noi non diamo propriamente del nostro, perché tutto è dono di Dio; ma Dio è contento così e attribuisce a noi il merito dei regali fatti con i beni suoi; anzi è disposto perfino a tramutare in lode il biasimo che ci sarebbe toccato: Il padrone lodò quell'amministratore; Procuratevi amici con la disonesta ricchezza, perché quando essa verrà a mancare, vi accolgano nelle dimore eterne.Questa è la strada per la quale anche i ricchi possono sperare di trovare salvezza, come appare da ciò che san Paolo scriveva a Timoteo, e che può convenire in misura diversa a ciascuno di noi: Ai ricchi in questo mondo raccomanda di non essere orgogliosi, di nonriporre la speranza sull'incertezza delle ricchezze, ma in Dio, che tutto ci dà con abbondanza perché ne possiamo godere; di fare del bene, di arricchirsi di opere buone, di essere pronti a dare, di essere generosi, mettendosi così da parte un buon capitale per il futuro, per acquistarsi la vita vera (1 Tm 6,17-19). IL DOVERE DI NON SCENDERE A PATTI CON IL MALE3. E quasi a dissipare ogni equivoco e a ribadire che con questa parabola non vuole insegnarci nessun compromesso con la disonestà e nessun patteggiamento col male, Gesù enuncia il principio del giusto integralismo cristiano: Nessuno può servire a duepadroni: o odierà l'uno e amerà l'altro, oppure si affezionerà all'uno e disprezzerà l'altro. Non potete servire a Dio e a mammona, cioè alla ricchezza, al desiderio di possesso, a tutto ciò che finisce col dominare il cuore dell'uomo.Il servo di cui si parla è lo schiavo del mondo antico, che aveva un servizio a tempo pieno, senza ferie e senza giornate di riposo. Così deve essere il nostro servizio di Dio: non deve avanzare spazio per nessun altro dominatore. Nessuna visione del mondo, nessuna ideologia, può contendere la nostra mente al Vangelo di Cristo; nessun impegno terreno può disputare il nostro cuore all'impegno per il Signore Gesù e per il suo Regno. Le cose del mondo - la mammona - devono servire a noi per l'affermazione della giustizia e della verità, non devono essere servite da noi, perché uno solo è il Signore, come ancora una volta abbiamo ripetuto all'inizio di questa messa: "Tu solo il Signore, Gesù Cristo".

In a fit of spite, Professor Kozlowski condenses his discussion of landmark British political philosophers Hobbes and Locke - forerunners of the American constitution - into a single joint lecture. We'll compare and contrast the two states of nature proposed by these thinkers, examine their divergent attitudes toward the authority of government, and root their philosophical conclusions in the tumultuous history of the English Civil War.Hooray for English philosophers - no translations necessary for these texts!
