We had one song that we had to kind of write while we were out there...which was a little weird...writing in that circumstance is weird for a full band. "I absolutely detested being called a singer-songwriter...I wanted to be David Bowie, I didn't want to be John Denver." This week, Josh Novak stopped by the patio for a captivating talk. Josh (branded "Mr Denver Music" by a friend of mine), is a Denver native, a songwriter since the age of six and thus, someone who is just deeply rooted in our music scene. Josh is a driven man, pushed forward by his laser sighted focus on his one main passion, writing and performing music Rescheduled by weather multiple times, I have been trying to get Josh on the show for months now and am so happy we finally were able to make it happen. Listen as we talk about learning how to play left handed, the thrill of playing your first real shows, trying to shake the stigma of labels, seeking a specific sound, the impact of life on your music, recording with talented producers, and so so so much more. "I have much respect for Tobias, He is the future of Denver music (from the event side)" This was a quote from a friend of mine regarding Tobias Krause. I received this text about an hour before Tobias arrived at my house for the taping of this show and a couple hours later, I found myself agreeing with every word of that statement. Tobias is another one of those guys whose name all of us have known for a few years now...even those who have never spoken a direct word with the man. He is a promoter, he is a talent buyer, he is an event manager, a journalist, a musician, a writer. A man of many hats, Tobias is quickly becoming one of the most influential individuals in the Denver art scenes. This is why I have wanted to have him on the show for so long, and as expected...the conversation was wonderful and informative. Listen as I sit with Tobias and talk about his musical past, his journalistic past, and his event management world of today. Tobias has been the one to shape the Westword Music Showcase for the last 2 years. He talks about the ins and outs of how that important Denver music festival is put together (this part is a must listen for any Denver musician!) He also chats about his involvement in the Denver restaurant scene, the Denver Beer scene, the Denver Craft scene...if something involves creativity and Denver, Tobias Krause seems to be an influential part of it. One thing I took away from this conversation...we need more people like Tobias. He is one of the ones that brings the organization, the resources, and the passion to these Denver events that allow our city's arts to shine. We all owe people like Tobias a beer (after all, he probably threw a festival that helped promote your favorite new brewery). "when I was playing this like really pretty, folky music I was like 'gosh, this sucks...I'm not even having a good time'. You know like, I wouldn't go out and buy my music...So I put it to bed" Shady Elders has been one of those bands for me here in Denver. I was a fan the first moment I clicked play. Shady songs themselves embody everything I love in music. Dark, brooding and heavy emotional pull married with delicate melody and thoughtful prose. It's dream-pop/post-punk/sometimes gothy/sometimes poppy awesomeness. Their live sets are heavy, loud and engaging. I have followed this band for almost 5 years now and my fanship only grows with each release. So naturally, I was thrilled to finally get them on the show to tell their Shady story. Listen below as I talk with both Fox and Miles about their individual musical pasts, the start of Shady Elders, making music that you yourself are a fan of, the struggles of personal relationships affecting the band's dynamic, going out of state to record and so so so much more! "It could have gone two directions at that point. It could have become a straight up marketing event for the Denver Post, or it could become a community event, and we have a community foundation....and they chose to move it into the community foundation and let me grow it slowly...and keep it as a non-profit" Mr. UMS. That's his name to me. There is a team of people who make UMS (the Underground Music Showcase) happen each year. It's a large team full of very talented and dedicated people with extraordinary skills ranging from Talent Buying, Marketing, and event operation and logistics. But at the helm of that team is a guy with a passion for what he is doing that is nothing short of infectious. Standing a head above most (literally), is Kendall Smith, or as I like to call him, Mr. UMS. Every conversation I have had both within the context of this interview and outside it, his passion for Denver's premiere local music showcase is evident in every sentence. It won't take but a minute or two in conversation with him before Kendall is genuinely seeking your thoughts on the scene and of course the UMS. This genuine drive to constantly innovate and improve is evident in this wonderful talk where we learn about Kendall's past, how he got into the UMS, the importance of keeping the UMS a community event, the obstacles he faces and the battle to simply...keep it awesome. Being the man behind what has become the biggest independent music festival in the region is not an easy chore. But Kendall handles it with absolute grace. Listen above and get to know the festival that we all hold so dear by getting to know the man behind it. "We had the final contract in our hands...we were ready to sign it and then it was done...just gone. " There were a few things that made an impression on me when first moving to Denver and checking out the scene. One of them was the Underground Music Showcase (naturally), and another of them was the band The Epilogues (one of the first live sets I saw after moving here). I loved the live energy of the Epilogues. Seeing their set comforted my fears about the Denver scene. I knew at that time that if this was a sample of Denver's output...I was in for a treat. Jason Hoke is my guest for this week and he is forever connected to my initial impressions of Denver. He is the drummer for the Epilogues and is now one of the primary talent buyers for The UMS. We had a wonderful discussion about his personal history in music and the excellent origins of The Epilogues. We talked about growing up with supportive parents, learning how to put on your own shows, navigating through the murky waters of label shopping, booking strategies for The UMS and so much more! The song for this episode is an exclusive preview! It is called 'Best Friends' and will be available on The Epilogues upcoming album. "So much in my life is just about a namesake. If I had a band name...my whole life would be different. Somehow the name changes everything because you're not a band. You're a hired gun." In today's world, making a living making art can be extremely difficult. With the fact that album sales alone will rarely be enough to sustain most artists alone, it's imperative that artists start thinking outside the box and experimenting with different ways to make this passion something that is sustaining. In this episode, Megan Burtt schools us all on that very topic. From playing in piano bars in Vietnam, touring prisons in Pennsylvania, to crafting and selling custom guitar straps or diving into commissioned songcraft, Megan Burtt has always found a way to move forward. Listen above as we talk about her history in music, taking a dive on college entrance exams, Mississippi dreams, life changing illnesses, being in a band, watching stabbings and riots happen at your show and oh, just so much more! "I had one goal when I started playing music, was to get in a band and play A show. Yeah. So everything else is just....gravy" This episode is why I love doing this podcast. I invited members of local punk rock band, SPELLS on the show. What I knew of SPELLS was very little. I knew that they a) put on extremely fun shows where they set up on the floor and get the crowd involved and b) comedian Ben Roy is their frontman. That was it. That's all I knew. Within minutes of Chuck and Rob sitting down (oh by the way, I had Chuck and Rob from SPELLS on this week), I found out that I was about to talk to 2 guys with a combined 35 years of being entrenched in the Denver music scene. What a wonderful surprise! Peeling back the onion of Colorado music has become a personal love of mine and these two gentlemen helped me to expose so many layers. Listen above as Chuck and Rob each chronicle their extensive histories in our city's great punk scene. We cover everything from learning to drum on pillows, running music labels, finding safe haven in live music, to the average lifespan of a Denver band, the creation of SPELLS, band uniforms, and how Ben's recent success with Those Who Can't has (or has not) affected how they work. This was a fun one for sure. The song for this episode is called .Jet Set and is available for download via Bandcamp. "I'm grateful that I found something that I am really passionate about, that I can create this environment for talent to flourish... " Denver has an amazing Comedy scene. It's a scene that blowing up right now and getting national attention. We are not only producing amazing comedians, several of which are becoming household names as we speak; but we are (and have been for a long time) attracting the best and funniest comedy from all over the world. Now, there are probably a multitude of reasons that people could debate as to why this is happening. However, one thing is clear and not at all up for discussion. Wende Curtis and Comedy Works are the backbone to this scene. I had the pleasure of having Wende over to discuss her rich history and role in building this scene. Listen above as we talk about what drove her to comedy, the power of tenacity, weathering near economic ruin, helping young comics grow and much much more! The song for this episode is a wonderful tune called 'EZ2LUV' by one of my favorite Denver bands, The Circus House. They just released a new album, titled 'Graceful Jungle', available now! Go get it. "We said at the time, 'this is either gonna be commercial suicide or this is our Dark Side of the Moon'." As anyone who knows me can attest...I am a huge Bauhaus and Love & Rockets fan. I have been since I was a teen. I had the fortunate occassion to interview David J last year on this very podcast and I described it best back then: "Everybody has that one band. That band that you discovered in your teens that made you realize music can mean more to a person than mere beat and melody. That band that helps you discover who you are. That band that soundtracks your adolescence and thus your entire life. For me, that band was Bauhaus." So of course, you can imagine my excitement when I learned that Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins were slated to stop in Denver for a Lipgloss DJ set. They graciously agreed to a meeting at the Fire Lounge in the Art Hotel on Broadway for a special edition taping of Behind The Scene on COScene! We had an amazing talk about their histories in music, the incredible L&R album 'Hot Trip to Heaven' (which was an album ahead of its time), Dave Clark 5, creativity vs. technical skill, coffee table books, stripping down songs to their elements, motorcycles, upcoming projects and so so so much more. This was a fun one for sure! Check out an article where Kevin Haskins outlines his new book coming out this Fall! I was gone. I was just, hiding in my basement, depressed, for 3 to 6 months. I was just like, so mentally fried. This week I had Scott Labarbera on the patio. Scott is the owner and operator of Tennyson District's Oriental Theater (one of my personal favorite venues in Denver). Under Scott's wing, The Oriental has become a staple of live music and comedy in Denver and is one of the few remaining privately owned and operated theaters in town. Scott's story is one of determination and resilience. He shares with us his fascinating tale of what it took to walk away from a successful business in search of creative fulfillment. He talks of the highs, the lows and every bit in-between that one experiences in their pursuit of happiness. Personally, I get inspired by people like Scott, people that are willing to risk it all in order to search for something more in life. The song for this episode is from the band Paper Bird (who are good friends with The Oriental Theater) and is called As I Am, from their album Rooms. "I took in the championship philosophy of being the best at everything...and it was whether I was going to be hittin a pipe or putting the basketball in a hoop, I was going to be the best at it." This week I had local Rapper/MC Qbala on the patio. If you haven't yet heard of Qbala, don't worry, you will. With an energy and passion that is rivaled by few, Qbala is helping to define not just Denver hip-hop, but Denver music in general. Her amazing story, to me, is one of energy and balance. She openly tells her tale of struggling to manage the demons of substance abuse against her drive to push her natural talents. Qbala also talks about fighting labels and the societal expectations that accompany them. Listen above for an open, honest and inspiring story about this local artist who has fought to find balance in the energy of life and refuses to take anything for granted. The song for this episode is called Pride and is off of Qbala's latest EP "Battle Cries". Purchase the song, album and all of Qbala's great offerings direct from Bandcamp. "I said, I'm gonna do this again....I'm going to go back to before I even met those guys and like, reclaim something that I lost and own it and be a solo artist again." This week I had Julie Davis on the patio. Julie has been in critical circles within Denver music for quite sometime. With projects including Bluebook, Bela Karoli, Fairchildren, Miss America by Wheary, The Seven Hats and of course Nathaniel Rateliff, Julie has experienced the entire spectrum of independent music from playing solo in coffee shops to playing to thousands on national tours. Armed with a double bass, sparse yet highly effective percussion, and haunting melodies, Julie's first and also reborn/current project Bluebook is a wonderful and unique offering to this already diverse Denver scene. Julie's story is one of a constant and evolving search of self. How do we define ourselves? Are we defined by what we do for a career? Is it our family and friends? Are our past experiences to trump our future uncertainties or is it the other way around? Julie let's us in on her life's tale which walks through the path of these fundamental human questions. The song for this episode is of course from Bluebook. It is called Carnage and was recorded live by Morning Sound during the October 30th, 2015 Sofar Denver show. "When our parents left to drop us off to play our show, guess who was giving us pitchers of beer? Everyone else in the other bands. They were like "Hey you 15-year olds...come drink this". " The Denver music scene is rich in musical diversity. There is no longer one or two genres that dominate the landscape. You can find creative depth in every corner of the scene from hip-hop, folk and pop to psych, experimental and metal. There is no shortage of talent in this town and the flourishing Instrumental rock scene is one more perfect example of that. And at the top of that scene, you will find a group of 5 guys called Native Daughters. Channeling emotion from the depths of the musical spectrum, Native Daughters excel at the nuance of power. With low tunings, the absence of lyrics and a unique addition of a second drummer; their music hits hard with a confidence and ease that shows why it is this corner of the music scene has welcomed them with open arms. Listen above as we talk with Justin and Eddie about the band's beginnings, working with Sailor Records, draining cysts in your nether regions and learning to approach music with a "what will be, will be" attitude. "I don't know how he got it, but if I gave him $4, this kid that lived on the north side of Denver would bring me this one GI Joe figure. Like, he didn't have a file card, I didn't know who the fuck he was. He was just this blue dude with that regular effeminate face." If you listened to music in 2008, you have heard of the Flobots. They struck a perfect chord with their hit song "Handlebars", catching the attention of labels, radio stations and promoters across the country. Propelled into the throws of traditional music industry definition of "success", Flobots have experienced all that the most musicians sit and only dream about. But what is almost more impressive is how they moved forward after. After their second album did not perform as well as their first, they parted ways with their label. It'd be easy for any band to become jaded but they did exactly the opposite. The Flobots became energized to reconnect to what drove them forward in the first place, their devotion to community outreach and activism. Listen above as we discuss their extraordinarily rich histories including of course the full story of their explosion onto the national stage, their dedication to their principles throughout, Johnny5's past love of Hank Nelson and Milli Vanilli; and Brer Rabbit being too timid to sing around his own family. "They eventually said 'would you like to do the overnights, 5 nights a week, for $600 a month?'. I was no fool...I said yes!" Alf is a DJ with 93.3fm, KTCL. He's been with the station almost 20 years now and in that time has established an unbreakable bond with Denver's music scene and independent music in general. As the host of the Locals Only and Adventure University shows, Alf has immersed himself in independent music to a level that most DJ's never get to. He also is the father of Hometown for the Holidays, a year end showcase of local music that is becoming as much of a Denver tradition as UMS or WMS. Alf also hosts his popular 45+1 DJ sets which creates an unlikely pair between a local musician and a classic, mostly unknown, instrumental 45. In all cases, his goal is the same. He seeks to shine the spotlight on the incredible talent that exists here and entice the general public to do the same.
