The newest installment to my colors mix series. With all the mixes I do, I sometimes feel like I hold Rhéa hostage all by herself and she's forced to listen to too many of my live mixing. As a solution, she'd been wanting to invite some close friends over that she could host as I shot an episode and we agreed on a 2000s R&B as the soundtrack to the day. I wanted to tap into some nostalgic songs for us Millennials (a la 106 & Park, Cita's World, MTV Jams etc). S/O to all our friends that pulled up and vibed with us on this episode. This one features Faith Evans, Monica, Donnell Jones, Craig David, Backyard Band, Beyoncé & more. Press play and enjoy! Callan Wink is a novelist and full-time fly-fishing guide based in Montana. His writing style is highly acclaimed for its vivid descriptions and themes of rural life in the American West. His work is often compared to that of Jim Harrison, who was his friend and fishing companion. Wink's debut collection of short stories, Dog Run Moon (2016), garnered critical acclaim for its lyrical prose and resonant storytelling. In August (2022), Wink's debut novel, he weaves a coming-of-age story set following a young man as he navigates the complexities of adulthood and self-discovery. Through August's journey, the novel explores the struggles of finding one's own path while being tied to the past. Wink's latest novel, Beartooth, which officially comes out this year, is set in Montana's Beartooth Mountains, where we follow two brothers who go to dangerous lengths to live off the grid in a still wild land. Wink's writing comes alive with a keen understanding of the landscape and a vivid portrayal of people living on the margins of society. Wink has contributed essays to Anglers Journal for years now, where the reader gets to see a bit of his lighter side. His latest piece, “Locals Only,” applies lessons he's learned from seasoned surfers to the crowded trout rivers of Montana. The story is featured in the Winter '25 issue. In this podcast, Wink talks about balancing fishing, writing and surfing. Visit AnglersJournal.com to subscribe. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

If you think we've had grow nerds on the show in the past, just wait until you hear this conversation with one of the nation's most preeminent living soil farmers based out of a literal one-horse town also known as Pahrump, Nevada.Blackleaf finally pulls one of the hardest-working farmers in Nevada, Steve of Green Life Productions, out of his daily grind to grace the FSOTD studio and speak on sustainable, no-till, “water-only,” real-deal organic farming, his career in UFC, and how he applies a fighter's discipline to growing the cleanest, greenest herb (and even produce) possible. For the uninitiated, Green Life Productions (GLP) is a Nevada-based cultivation company known for its commitment to sustainable, organic growing practices. Utilizing a "No-Till Living Soil" method, GLP promotes environmental stewardship by creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that nurtures high-quality, terpene-rich herb. The company is celebrated for its craft varieties and eco-friendly approach, not to mention becoming the first licensed brand in Nevada.Aside from all of the valuable nuggets of grow knowledge crammed into this podcast, fans of UFC will truly enjoy the story of Steve from Green Life Productions. He details his journey fighting as a teenager and signing to UFC, traveling the world in the lightweight class, before ultimately discovering his love of herb during the downtime between matches. Turning away from prescription drugs in favor of clean medicinal herb to heal his injuries, Steve chose to dive headfirst into cultivation as he drew the curtain on his fighting career. You'll hear Steve speak a great deal on his 5-acre homestead out in Pahrump where he's been unbelievably busy cultivating herb, premium produce, and even hunting specific breeds of dogs. Fans of sustainable farming will marvel at the entire universe he's built on the property that has its own “Locals Only” farm store on-site showcasing their own produce and quality-sourced meats. He also speaks about his “open-kitchen” farming concept, which invites tourists to participate in the full experience from seed to sale.Serious cultivators will find themselves pulling out their pen and pad countless times during this episode as Steve drops gems on how he builds his regenerative soil beds, how to properly amend and top your soil for the healthiest yields, adding beneficial microorganisms, and how he's been able to out-perform $10 million+ buildouts with his $1.8 million setup that still only uses LEDs and water. One highlight you'll hear Steve make is that he's on his 40th cycle with some of his regenerative soil beds! It's almost impossible to cram all of the invaluable knowledge dropped in this podcast. For any aspiring cultivators, if this episode doesn't inspire you, we don't know what will. Find Steve's work @greenlifeproductions on Instagram and at your local NV

The untold story of Melbourne, FL 80s New Wave/Surf Punk band, LOCALS ONLYJoin us, as Brian Cleary (keyboards) and Johnny Lee (bass guitar) tell the story of their 1980's new wave/surf punk band, Locals Only. Locals Only formed in Melbourne, FL in 1980 and were earliest new wave surf bands of the era out of the Central Florida region. They played at venues such as Sleep Out Louie's, Brassy's, FIT Rat, The Boardwalk and more. The band played throughout Central Florida, opening for touring bands such as T.S.O.L. (L.A.) and Marginal Man (D.C.). Locals Only recorded one studio album in 1984, but it was never released. The album may eventually see the light of day in the near future! On this episode of Headliners, Greg is joined by THE HABITS to talk about their new EP I THINK I'M FINE BUT I DON'T KNOW!When Wolf Bradley and Andrew Macatrao first met as teens, they didn't expect that their journey would lead to a long path of friendship and being on the cusp of becoming breakthrough musicians. Especially when that first encounter took place at Bradley's parent's ballet school in San Pedro. They weren't enemies, but they certainly weren't friends either. With a bunch of guys in the same age range, it was easy for them to be in direct competition with one another without becoming pals. That would change soon enough. Bradley received a guitar as a present and, knowing that Macatrao played drums, they decided to jam together. All previous notions about one another went out the window and they became fast friends.Over the years, members would come and go, leaving the duo as the only ones committed to making music seriously for the long haul. After cycling through a number of names, Bradley and Macatrao soon settled on calling themselves The Habits. In 2019, the group's single “Casual” would spend eight weeks in the Top 5, peaking at No.1 on hometown rock radio tastemaker KROQ's “Locals Only” playlist. It wasn't just in their hometown that the song would casually catch. SiriusXM's Alt Nation and DC 101 added the song, quickly introducing the duo to a much wider audience. Then the pandemic hit. After a few months of deliberation, The Habits decided to unleash their What's the Worst That Can Happen? EP to the world. The decision proved to be wise. The single from the EP, “Shoulders,” recently surpassed 1 million streams and won a Best Pop Video at the California Music Video Awards in 2021.But Bradley and Macatrao had larger ambitions than being local heroes. Through a friend, they met American Authors bassist Dave Rublin. Instantly connecting on a professional and friendly level, Rublin produced and co-wrote The Habits' earworm, “Don't Need A Hero,” released in 2022 to critical acclaim. With a new introspective EP titled I Think I'm Fine But I Don't Know set to arrive on April 28, The Habits are ready to spread their message even farther and wider than they have before.CONNECT WITH THE HABITSInstagram - TwitterSUPPORT THIS SHOWSUBSCRIBE TO YOUR LIFE THE MIXTAPE MAGAZINE
On this episode of Headliners, Greg sits down with JOKER'S HAND to talk about their new EP SEEING RED (OUT 17 FEBRUARY).Joker's Hand is an alternative rock band based in Southern California that weaves elements of punk, hip-hop, and pop into their ear-catching sound. The band's explosive live shows coupled with their melodic vocals and musicianship has catapulted them above the noise floor of the Los Angeles rock music scene. Founding members Kevin Kawano and Matt Lau started the band in 2017. Both are first-generation Asian Americans and had rigid, education-based upbringings. Their decision to dedicate their lives to music was very much going against the grain. The duo began carving a name for themselves in the Los Angeles club circuit before meeting producers Steve Ornest and Wyn Davis at Total Access Recording Studios (Sublime, No Doubt, Guns N' Roses). Their debut EP hit streaming services and radio airwaves in 2020 with a full album to follow it up in late 2021. The band has been touring since then in anticipation for an upcoming EP to be released in late summer of 2022. The duo recently teamed up with Jakob Nowell on their latest single “Danny Phantom” which is currently in KROQ's Top 5 on Locals Only.CONNECT WITH JOKER'S HANDWebsite - Instagram - Facebook - TwitterSUPPORT THIS SHOW

In this episode we discuss different types of surf localism in the context of surfscape colonialism in the Global North and Global South, based on our recent work related to critical localisms of resistance in occupied surfscapes. We explore localisms of entitlement and resistance, as well as girl localisms in a range of well-known surfscapes to highlight the ways surfers are using localism as a means of both perpetuating and contesting the colonial, patriarchal and racialized neoliberal state of modern surfing and its surf tourism industrial complex. ***Resources:We've been helped in this work by recent revisions of the historiography of surfing – Scott Laderman's Empire in Waves, Isaiah Walker's Waves of Resistance, Krista Comer's Surfer Girls in the New World Order, Kevin Dawson's Undercurrents of Power, Dexter Zavalza Hough-Snee and Alexander Sotelo Eastman's The Critical Surf Studies Reader (including Dina Gilio-Whitaker's chapter on Appropriating Surfing and the Politics of Indigenous Authenticity), and Allison Rose Jefferson's Living the California Dream: African American Leisure Sites during the Jim Crow Era.***Additional Resources: Black Girls Surf: https://blackgirlssurf.orgBrown Girl Surf: https://www.browngirlsurf.comThe Wahine Project: https://www.thewahineproject.orgNative Like Water: https://www.nativelikewater.orgLatinX Surf Club: https://www.facebook.com/latinxsurfclubColor the Water: https://www.colorthewater.orgSurfrider Los Angeles: https://la.surfrider.org***Bios: Tara Ruttenberg is Ph.D. Candidate in Development Studies at the Wageningen School of Social Sciences, specializing in critical surf studies and alternatives to development in sustainable surf tourism. Joker's Hand is a rock band hailing from Torrance, CA. Founding members Kevin Kawano and Matthew Lau met while attending film school at UC Santa Cruz. After writing dozens of demos and carving a name for themselves on the Los Angeles club circuit, the band met with producers Steve Ornest and Wyn Davis at Total Access Recording Studios (Sublime, No Doubt, Guns N' Roses). They began working on what would become their debut self-titled EP, which was released in March 2020. The band's first single “Anthem,” landed in rotation on several FM radio stations throughout Southern California. Their second single “Gold Rush” charted on KROQ's Locals Only, reaching #1 and staying in the Top 5 for nine weeks straight. KROQ's Locals Only also featured their song “Hijacked” which also took the #1 spot, their second song to top the chart. Best described as retro rock with a punk edge, Joker's Hand songs are timeless, and their commercial accessibility reaches across the generations. The band's explosive live shows coupled with their excellent vocal ability and musicianship has catapulted them above the noise floor of the Los Angeles rock music scene. The Asian American duo has been active in the #StopAsianHate movement, recently performing at rallies across the Southland.
