If you had told 15-year-old me I'd be doing a podcast with today's two Talkhouse guests, I would have asked you what the hell a podcast was before getting truly excited: It's Perry Farrell and Daniel Ash. Perry Farrell almost certainly needs to introduction, but here goes: He first found fame as the singer for Jane's Addiction, a band that bridged the gap between glammy metal and some burgeoning genre called alternative rock, and is pretty largely responsible the latter becoming a thing. The end of Jane's Addiction in the early 1990s was the beginning of Farrell's other big creation, the Lollapalooza festival, which continues to this day—the U.S. version was just this past weekend in Chicago, as a matter of fact. Farrell has played with other people over the years, and the legendary Jane's Addiction has reformed in various incarnations over the years. But the big news for 2024 is that the band's original lineup has reformed both to play shows and even to record some new music. Check out the band's brand new song, “Imminent Redemption.” This week, Jane's Addiction will embark on a U.S. tour with the band of today's other guest, Daniel Ash. Love and Rockets formed from the ashes of the legendary goth band Bauhaus, and features three of that band's four members. The original Love and Rockets run, from 1985 until 1998, resulted in a legendary string of albums that was influential on an entire generation of tough-to-define bands, a list that definitely includes Jane's Addiction. Love and Rockets has reformed a couple of times over the years, the latest being a successful run last year that marked their first shows in 15 years. It doesn't seem like there's any brand new music on the horizon for Love and Rockets, though last year's My Dark Twin gathered some hard-to-find tracks. For now, why not refamiliarize yourself with their biggest hit, 1989's “So Alive.” In advance of their co-headlining tour, Farrell and Ash talked about how they keep fit enough to rock this hard all these years later, which includes taking a day off between each show and utilizing superfoods instead of hard drugs. Ash talks about how three of the biggest songs of his career were written and recorded in one day each, as well as how Ziggy Stardust changed his life forever. They also chat about the joy of collaboration and the potential up and downsides of AI. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Perry Farrell and Daniel Ash for chatting. Emerging from the haunting echoes of gothic rock pioneered by Bauhaus, Love and Rockets swiftly conquered the college radio scene during the mid-80s. By 1989, the band had made a significant leap into the mainstream with their smash hit "So Alive," inspired by vocalist Daniel Ash's glimpse of a captivating woman across a dimly lit room. Join us this week as we're joined by Mustard Plug guitarist Colin Clive, exploring his enduring admiration for Love and Rockets. Colin's firsthand experiences with their electrifying live performances offer a unique perspective, having been an avid fan long before the band captured the attention of the nation. This week features the second interview in a two-part series with Daniel Ash and David J., lyricists and songwriters behind Love and Rockets, Bauhaus, and multiple other band and solo projects. I interviewed Daniel and David separately, with a similar set of questions. The success of their projects can be attributed, in part, to their distinctly different approaches to writing lyrics and crafting songs. Today's episode features David J. I spoke with Daniel and David while they were preparing for Love and Rocket's first US tour in fifteen years. Named after the underground comic by the Hernandez brothers, Love and Rockets announced themselves to the world with their radically unique take on the classic Temptations song “Ball Of Confusion.” This debut proved that they were going to be a force to contend with. It became a huge seller and a popular club hit in the US and Canada, where it also went gold. The legacy of the band has only grown with more people realizing the extent of their influence and generations of new fans discovering them. The list of artists who cite their influence is impressive: The Flaming Lips, The Dandy Warhols, A Place To Bury Strangers, Jane's Addiction, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Beck, Maynard Keenan, Dubfire, the Pixies and many more. As a bonus, David agreed to share lyrics from an upcoming project. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/viewlesswings/support

As a founding member of the ground breaking Bauhaus, multi-instrumentalist Daniel Ash has distinguished himself in the world of contemporary music. He later went on to form Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets. Bauhaus were an English rock band formed in Northampton in 1978. Known for their dark image and gloomy sound, they are one of the pioneers of gothic rock, although they mixed many genres, including dub, glam rock, psychedelia, and funk. Love and Rockets were formed in 1985 by former Bauhaus members Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins after that group split in 1983. Ash and Haskins had recorded and performed in another band, Tones on Tail, between 1982 and 1984.
Bass player David J was a founding member of the influential post-punk band Bauhaus in 1978. He wrote the lyrics for many Bauhaus songs, including the single, Bela Lugosi's Dead. He sang lead on Who Killed Mr. Moonlight?. In 1985, David, his brother Kevin, and Daniel Ash, all former members of Bauhaus, formed Love and Rockets, which had a hit single with the song So alive. In 2014 David wrote an autobiography, Who Killed Mister Moonlight. In the book he explores his work in bands as well as a solo performer. He also delves deep into his exploration of the occult, drawing together a diverse cast of supporting characters, including William S. Burroughs, Alan Moore, Genesis P. Orridge, and Rick Rubin. **Technical Note*** As many of you know the Lydian Spin gang has been away from home. As a result, recording has been happening on unreliable setups. Unfortunately the audio for the intro this week was corrupted and not useable. Intros will continue as expected next week.

Singer, songwriter and photographer, Attasalina said her name is her birth name given by her godmother, a pioneer teacher of Buddhism in the West, and has been translated as “providing the meaning”. She describes her inspiration in her work as her work is "culturally informed by lineages in Theravada Buddhism and Indigenous Religion and Resistance Movements and focuses on visionary experiences as a quest for truth explored through personal narratives of oppression, awareness and survival."Her musical abilities can be traced to her grandfather, a Cuban-American progressive jazz drummer and singer. Attasalina formed her first rock and roll band called "The Seraphim Rising" in 2008. Her first release was a collaboration with guitarist Daniel Ash of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets called “The Soldiers of Everyday” in 2010. The song is part of a limited edition CD called "Freedom I Love" released in 2016. Attasalina also collaborated with the legendary producer John Fryer for Black Needle Noise with a song called "Messages By Dreams" released on the album "Before The Tears Came." More recently, they released another single for Black Needle Noise on COP International called “Machine” in June 2021. Attasalina is currently working on a solo album and photography book called “Freed From Rage and Sorrow” which you can subscribed to on Patreon.https://www.patreon.com/attasalinahttps://www.attasalina.com

From Chad Radford: Burning From the Inside has always held something of a mystery simmering just beneath the surface of every note and every lyrical phrase. Bauhaus' final album (the first time around) perfectly distilled the band's black-clad post-punk and proto-goth traipse into an enigmatic final act. Like the arrows of chaos, seminal recordings by Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy, Tones On Tail, David J, Daniel Ash, and Dali's Car all fired off in every direction shortly after its arrival. I'm not sure if there's a literal code to crack here, but nods to Italian Futurism in “Who Killed Mr. Moonlight” take shape as a poignant snapshot of a group that has already pulled itself apart at the seams. “Antonin Artaud” pushes that tension to an ecstatic state, “King Volcano,” “Slice Of Life,” and the album's title track are monster cuts—quintessential Bauhas. “Hope” brings it all to a warm and psychedelic landing, hinting at what the future holds in store. But it's difficult to see the forest for the trees, maybe that's what the cover art is all about. All meaning is shrouded in layers upon layers of cinematic imagery here. Nearly 40 years after its arrival, Burning From the Inside still reveals all sorts of insight into the band's history and legacy. I was thrilled when Cassy, Tom, and James invited me on the show to talk about it all.Check out Chad's work at https://radatl.com/

As we enter into October, we will be looking at bands with a darker edge. Tonights band is Bauhaus. They are an English rock band, formed in Northampton, England, in 1978. The group consists of Daniel Ash (guitar, saxophone), Peter Murphy (vocals, occasional instruments), Kevin Haskins (drums) and David J Haskins, or “David J” (bass). One of the pioneers of gothic rock, Bauhaus were known for their dark image and gloomy sound, although they mixed many genres, including dub, glam rock, psychedelia, funk, power pop and ska. Bauhaus broke up in 1983. Murphy began a solo career while Ash and Haskins continued as Tones on Tail and, later, reunited with David J to form Love and Rockets. Both enjoyed greater commercial success in the United States than Bauhaus had, but disappeared from the charts in their homeland. Bauhaus eventually reunited for a 1998 tour, again from 2005 to 2008, and once again in 2019. Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets, Peter Murphy, The Cure

In this episode Kevin Sheehan invited back Journeyfront's Daniel Ash to give us a complete demonstration of the platform and its capabilities. We get a great look and insight into how the system allows for better hiring accuracy and how you will avoid the critical hiring mistakes that plague the industry. Not to mention it shows how you will save a ton of money in the process!
Here is the complete conversation with Daniel Ash from Journeyfront. Daniel is the CEO and Co-Founder of Journeyfront which is an extremely dynamic and powerful hiring software that has flipped the hiring values on its ear. They do not focus on efficient and timely hiring (thought they do that as well), they focus on hiring accuracy as it drives your firm's goals with the right people for the job. It is an interesting shift in your focus but the software they are suing is powerful and effective for every manager.

Doug Messenger was born in New York on Long Island on March 9, 1942. After his dad got a new job opportunity, his family decided to made a big move to Mexico City, Mexico where he spent most of his younger years from the age of 4 to 17. Doug's passion for learning landed him back in the United States where he studied at Princeton in New Jersey, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. While traveling back to visit family in Mexico in the summer of 1962, Doug met the love of his life, Jeanne Thompson. Doug and Jeanne soon married after he graduated from Princeton and he worked at Bethlehem Steel's Export Office in New York City. Doug knew he was destined for more so he quit his job and decided to move to Boston, Massachusetts to enroll in the esteemed Berklee College of Music. Unfortunately, Doug's wife, Jeanne became very sick so he was only able to attend the music school for 2 years, but he knew he wanted to play music so played in R&B bands all over Boston, one of which was the best band in town with Roger Pace, considered to be the white James Brown. As a side musician, Doug had the thrill of backing up some of the best soul and R&B legends of our time including Al Green (1965), Chuck Berry (1966 & 1971),Etta James (1967), Dee Clark (1966) and a 415lb singer called Lotsa Poppa (1966). In 1968, Doug also played guitar for Darrell Banks for the song,"Open The Door To Your Heart" and Dyke & The Blazers, "Shotgun Slim," in 1970. One of the biggest songwriters Doug worked with was Van Morrison from 1971-1973, where he played guitar and arranged songs for Van's album, St Dominic's Preview and got the chance to collaborate with piano legend, Vince Geraldi. After one of his house band shows, as fate would have it, Doug ended up playing Monopoly with Jimi Hendrix (Doug is still bitter that Jimi landed on Boardwalk his first time around the board), known at the time as Jimi James. They would meet again in 70s, a few months before Hendrix passed away. Over the years, Doug played in over 20 house bands from 1965-1975 and was hired for sessions for Warner Brothers, MGM, ABC, Original Sound and a few for Motown in 1971 & 1972. Doug also played with songwriter/composer, Jackie De Shannon and also played in a band called Mudd with Willie Weeks on bass and also backed up Carly Simon on "Speak Out To Me," but now Doug wanted to start his own band. Ironically called The Police, Doug's first band came to a halt when his lead singer died of a heroin overdose. It took him 5 years to find the next 3 members of his next band, The Pickles, who were making waves on the LA scene and just as they were about to get signed, one of his lead singers died in a car accident. Doug knew he had enough of playing in a band so he turned his rehearsal space into a recording studio in 1984. By the time he acquired enough gear in 1988, Doug officially opened Hard Drive Analog & Digital Studios in 1990. He got his Stephens tape machine that Pink Floyd THE WALL & Steely Dan’s AJA was recorded on and Fleetwood Mac “Rumors” was mixed on in 1987. Since 1990, some of the incredible music talents who have come through to record at Hard Drive Analog & Digitial Recording include Joe Pass, Jimmie Eat World, Joe Bonamassa, Cindy Blackman, The Plain White Ts, At the Drive In, Mars Volta, Neon Trees, New Found Glory, Nikhil Korula Band, Robben Ford and Beck's first single, "Loser" was also recorded here. Doug has also recorded the background music for the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards and Country Music Awards. Over the years, Doug has also recorded 7 albums with the blues label, Delta Groove Records, one of which won the WC Handy Foundation Blues Album of the Year. Currently, Doug Messenger is working with Paul Denman, Sade’s producer and Daniel Ash from Bauhaus and will be recording the 8th album of the Nikhil Korula Band in January 2020. John talks on the phone to Daniel Ash who describes in detail the series of events and the unlikely spaces in which Bauhaus birthed Bela Lugosi's Dead back in 1979. The sparse, darkly atmospheric track pioneered the iconic post-punk/goth movement, and remains one of the most influential songs of all time. Joined by Bassist, Diva Dompé, they hit the road and have been thrilling audiences ever since. They stopped by dublab to talk with Alejandro Cohen about the origins of Poptone, rediscovering a love for performing, and offer some gems from the Bauhaus vaults. Bauhaus were an English post-punk band, formed in Northampton, England in 1978. The group consisted of Peter Murphy (vocals, occasional instruments), Daniel Ash (guitar), Kevin Haskins (drums) and David J (bass). The band was originally named Bauhaus 1919 in reference to the first operating year of the German art school Bauhaus, although they shortened the name within a year of formation. One of the first gothic rock groups, Bauhaus were known for their dark image and gloomy sound, although they mixed many genres, including dub, glam rock, psychedelia and funk.

“David J Says Peter Murphy Is Keeping Everyone In Stitches” Although it’s hard to imagine the Dark Prince of Goth is also a fountain of chuckles, David J says his bandmate Peter Murphy has been in fine form and keeping everyone laughing while on tour. The two former Bauhaus members have teamed up with a full band for an extensive tour to commemorate 40 years of Bauhaus and they’re crushing it everywhere they go. The former Love and Rockets/Bauhaus bassist/singer talks to Alex about how his reunion with Murphy came about, his relationship with former bandmates Daniel Ash and brother Kevin Haskins and why he’ll never retire. He also talks about reading Ian Curtis’ love letters, the sadness of the Beach Boys and his work with the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy. Alex also tells David J that he’s interviewed 3/4 of Bauhaus and now just needs Peter Murphy to complete the Goth Grand Slam… Photo Credit: Judy Lyon

The definition of vernacular architecture in Seattle is changing as fast as the city itself. Building your home with your bare hands used to be a common occurrence, but these days it's rare. How do we define Vernacular architecture when the rules we live by dictate that the people who build our homes are rarely the people who live in them?

Playlist: Ball of Confusion, No Big Deal, So Alive, Motorcycle, Love and Rockets; Post Crucifixión, Los Siete Delfines

"We said at the time, 'this is either gonna be commercial suicide or this is our Dark Side of the Moon'." As anyone who knows me can attest...I am a huge Bauhaus and Love & Rockets fan. I have been since I was a teen. I had the fortunate occassion to interview David J last year on this very podcast and I described it best back then: "Everybody has that one band. That band that you discovered in your teens that made you realize music can mean more to a person than mere beat and melody. That band that helps you discover who you are. That band that soundtracks your adolescence and thus your entire life. For me, that band was Bauhaus." So of course, you can imagine my excitement when I learned that Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins were slated to stop in Denver for a Lipgloss DJ set. They graciously agreed to a meeting at the Fire Lounge in the Art Hotel on Broadway for a special edition taping of Behind The Scene on COScene! We had an amazing talk about their histories in music, the incredible L&R album 'Hot Trip to Heaven' (which was an album ahead of its time), Dave Clark 5, creativity vs. technical skill, coffee table books, stripping down songs to their elements, motorcycles, upcoming projects and so so so much more. This was a fun one for sure! Check out an article where Kevin Haskins outlines his new book coming out this Fall! Also check out Daniel's wonderful album, "Stripped" where he reimagines classic Bauhaus, Love & Rockets and Tones on Tail hits. Listen above and as always, subscribe direct on iTunes and RSS. Just realized I forgot to do my notes and random things for this podcast, which was already over a month ago! Jeez. Well, it's on the way, plus a new podcast once I find time to record. New job, new family member, new year and a cross-country move on the horizon are taking up all my time at the moment. Did you notice all the "newness" in that last sentence? Yet here I am dishing out what Bryan Ferry would call "The Same Old Scene" when it comes to reasons why I can't seem to get podcasts up in a reasonable amount of time anymore. Or, like ABC's Martin Frye crooned, "Excuses have their uses, but they're all used up." Seriously, though, I can't recall being any busier in my entire life and I beg your indulgence with my slow updates of late. Update as of (02-04-12): Let's look at a few of the bands in this particular episode (finally, right!?) I want to start with League of Gentlemen. Funny I want to start with a band I know almost nothing about, but it's really the concept of this song that intrigues me so much. Back in the 80s, there were a lot of industrial-sounding bands that were fascinated with the synthesis between man and machine and what it might entail for the survival of the human race. Mysterious Art, for instance, if you recall from an eariler episode, touched on the theme with Men of Glass. There were plenty of others. This excellent number from 1987 does the same. On a side note, I have always been fascinated how Eastern Bloc industrial artists could always seem to write cool songs even though they barely knew English. Somehow they take sentence fragments and comma splices, add the letter "z" wherever there is supposed to be an "s", pluralize words like "informationz" and still manage to give me chills. That's talent! Of course, this band only had enough talent to do one song because I haven't, to date, found anything else by these guys ... at least in this incarnation. As we have learned with producers like Morton, Sherman and Belucci they can "seed" an entire genre by doing hundreds of one-off bands to create a scene as those guys did with the Belgian New Beat dance scene years ago. So, maybe the guys in LOG reformed under another moniker. I'll have to look into it sometime. But there's more to this "Humatic" phenomenon than meets the eye. As with other electronic groups who explored man's servitude to the rise of machines there is an inherent lack of logic there that makes me chuckle. I've played it out for you below, though names have been changed to protect the innocent. (Note: this is a completely fictional account) Klaus: Hi, Gert. Gert: Howdy, Klaus. Klaus: Say, Gert, how would you like to be in a band with me? Gert: Sounds great, Klaus. But is this another one of your band concepts that requires I wear lederhosen on stage while dumping a stein full of Krautspatzle over my head? Klaus: No, Gert. This one is much better. I want to explore the relationship between man and machine and how eventually, due to elementary chaos theory, all machines will morph and rise up against their masters and enslave them, breed with them and create a hybrid race of automatons that will exterminate all humanity. Gert: Count me in! Klaus: Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go get the drum machines, sequencing keyboards, electronic samplers and Commodore computers that we'll be using. Gert: Sounds great, Klaus. I can't see anything that can go wrong with this utterly ironic plan of yours. By the way, do you have a band name yet? Klaus: I sure do, Gert. I wanted something memorable and easy to recall, so it's come down to either Braunschweiger Umweltverschmutzung or League of Gentlemen. Gert: Rad. Update as of (02-17-12): I don't have anymore fantastic re-enactments for the next band in the arsenal. In fact, like League of Gentlemen, I have little to no information at all about Joe Machine either, though I think I came across his social networking page on MySpace ... or at least some guy who goes by the name Joe Machine. Anyway, we have ZYX records in Germany to thank for this release and divinity to thank for the voice that is eerily reminiscent of Daniel Ash from Bauhaus/Tones on Tail/Love and Rockets fame. As is the case so often with electronic music of this era, "Kraftwerk creep" rears its head a couple of times in this episode. Seeing as how they are one of the most influential collectives in electronic music history it's not surprising that so many others to follow were touched by their genius. From tempo to timbre to replicating the "Musique non-stop" mantra found in the Kraftwerk tune of the same name from the Electric Cafe album, Psyche's X-rated is a delectable morsel of synthetic cyber-porn sleaze that captures the Kraftwerk-ian spirit perfectly and garners this episode an "explicit" tag in the process. Sebastian Komor of Icon of Coil remixed the track. Then, there is the awesome, sub-splitting frequencies of the track Komputer Pop by the band Komputer. If you recall, I mentioned this band when discussing the group I Start Counting several episodes ago as they, Fortran 5 and Komputer are all brain children of David Baker and Simon Leonard. If you haven't done so and you are a Kraftwerk fan, I highly recommend Komputer's first album called World of Tomorrow. It's a fantastic concept album and is about as close to replicating the Kraftwerk sound as you're going to find. There are a bunch of great tracks to boot. And in case you missed it, Baker and Leonard recently released a compilation of tracks spanning all three iterations of their long-time collaboration. Called Konnecting, it contains 15 tracks. For die-hards, they also released a companion 60-track digital deluxe set of b-sides and rarities with tons of remixes. If you have never owned anything by these guys, the new set is a fantastic place to begin and perhaps end if you're not a completist when it comes to music collecting. More to come ...
