Hello, bozos! It's November the First and if the question is, “Can I start playing Last Christmas?'', the answer is, “Why did you stop?''. We noticed all the biggest podcasts seem to have celebrity hosts, murder or hot takes. Shat The Movies lacks star power. And it doesn't have thrilling true-crime tales. So this week we're banking on misguided opinions as we plug into "Short Circuit." Big D doesn't think Johnny 5 is really alive. Ash believes this is Ally Sheedy's worst performance. And Gene is convinced Ben Jabituya isn't Indian. Two of them are wrong, and Gene wrote this episode description. Despite their divergent opinions, the Shat Crew agreed on a lot of things about this 1986 Steve Guttenberg comedy: The robot design is classic. The film is oddly paced. And NOVA's security force is a bunch of dicks. The Bay Area dances a little different. More than music, Hyphy is described as a movement for a reason: it involved one's mind, body and soul. Episode 3: Taking Up Room on the Floor explores the dance culture of the bay area that helped visualize the Hyphy Movement. Born from the 1960s and 1970s funk scene in Oakland, the free-flowing and hard-hitting dance style known as Boogaloo has evolved into styles like pop and locking and T.U.R.F. dancing, which is still popular in the Bay Area to this day. With breaking (aka break dancing) entering the Olympics in 2024 and events like Red Bull Dance Your Style, T.U.R.F. dancing has kept a visual element of the Hyphy Movement-era alive. Expect to hear from Too $hort, Dregs One, Ice Cold 3000 of the Turfeinz crew, Johnny5 of TurfInc, Thizz Nation photographer D-Ray, organizers from the community space Youth Uprising, and more. For more Hyphy music, check out the playlist curated by host Branden LSK.
In this episode, we're diving into the career of Johnny5, a DJ, Promoter, and producer who's been shaking up San Francisco's music scene. We talk about his transition from his Chicago-based Hip Hop routes to the Bay Area to pursue his passion and the influence his formal education had in propelling him to new heights. After moving to San Francisco in 2005, Johnny5's sound quickly evolved, blending grimy bass and house elements, and he became a force in the city's bass music scene, hosting a prominent bass music night at Temple SF and making his mark on the festival circuit. He also played a significant role in the dubstep scene, co-founding "Ritual Dubstep," a weekly event that grew to be the largest on the West Coast. As a producer, Johnny5 founded Irie Cartel Recordings in 2011, achieving success with releases that climbed the Beatport charts. His productions, like the "Thuggin" EP, offer a diverse range of bass-heavy sounds, showcasing his versatility and impact in the industry. Join us as we listen to his hottest soon-to-be-released tracks and explore Johnny5's remarkable journey in the electronic music world, from his early influences to his thriving career in San Francisco's music scene. A deranged cat lady and a living war machine hide out from a robotics lab in a food truck. The robot has an existential crisis about its own mortality and the woman goes from thinking it's an alien, to a jerk, to maybe a romantic interest? In fact, multiple people in this movie reference the robot in a sexual way, including its maker and even the local news. Come listen as Tara and I revisit one of our childhood favorites!

I, for one, bow down to our robot overlords. Robots have been all around us for many years. Why do we have such an obsession for these audacious automata? Jay and Shua look at robots in movies, TV, and life in general on Enjoy Stuff. Bang your head with some heavy metal! Robots have become a regular part of our life. We look at the history of robots and how they have programmed their way into our pop culture. This week on Enjoy Stuff, it's The Life Robotic with 5T3V3-Z1550U. News -The purchase of Casa Bonita by Matt Stone and Trey Parker is official -Mexico will soon be able to enjoy Krispy Kreme Donut Cereal -Dress up for breakfast with some Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles Cereal makeup What we're Enjoying Jay and Shua are both tremendously enjoying the Apple+ series Ted Lasso with Jason Sudekis. It has heart and humor with some great messages thrown in. Enjoy Life Where did robots come from? How long have they been around? It may surprise you to find out that the first automated machine dates back to 1737. Though ‘Digesting Duck' may have been a far cry from Boston Dynamic's Spot robot, it was still the humble beginnings of centuries of mechanized men. Once we got our first glimpse of a non-biological creature doing its thing, we couldn't get enough. Soon they were beeping their way into books, movies, toys, and everyday life. We use them to entertain, to do jobs that are too dangerous for humans, and for companionship. (I love you, Roomba!) To head off the imminent threat of a Cylon takeover, Isaac Asimov created three laws that should keep them in their place. But writers have been challenging that concept in many stories ever since. But what makes a robot a robot? Could it be classified as an android or a cyborg? What kinds of robots do you have a magnetic attraction to? Johnny 5? Wall-E? Or do you have more dark tastes and would like to snuggle up with the Terminator? Did you play with robot toys growing up? Or did you wait until we had real robots of today, like the Mars Curiosity Rover? We would love to hear your thoughts on those plastic pals that are fun to be with. The boys are back! Though the podcast release schedule didn’t change, the live Twitch stream is back with Doug and Justin talking about Doug’s recent vacation...and of course his farts. After they explore the finer points of both these thrilling topics the real conversation starts when Justin plays a famous sound bite from the classic video game Mortal Kombat. For all of the Mortal Kombat movie enthusiasts who have yet to see the film, this is the point when you likely want to tune out as the boys spare no spoilers. The guys talk about the new main character’s very suburban name, how Kano stole the film, the characters gaining their powers, how bad Sub-Zero is at his job, and why the town of Gary, IN was so directly featured. The most surprising part of this whole episode is that, in a discussion of a clearly bad movie, Justin is the one raining all over the parade while Doug is offering excuses and arguments as to why it’s not that bad. So while Doug may hate stuff, he doesn’t hate all stuff and he doesn’t hate the new Mortal Kombat movie. After a thrilling segue from Vacation Doug™ of all people, this week’s Throw-Down crashes in for a landing. This week, Johnny 5 from the Short Circuit Cinematic Universe vs Wall-E from some dumb movie, according to Vacation Doug™ (he’s back to hating stuff). Which bot will come out on top? For once living up to the 1980s-movie-sense of our name, we’re talking about robots. How should the law treat robots? What do we analogize to, the law of traditional machines? Animals? Something else? How should that law be “made,” by courts or by legislatures? And how does the Constitution interact with artificial intelligence? When a robot writes a novel is it “speech?” In a special Short Circuit, we look into all of these questions with our guest Ed Walters, founder and CEO of Fastcase, and an adjunct professor who teaches robot and artificial intelligence law at Georgetown Law School. In this episode Nick and Andrew discuss the most 80's movie ever Short Circuit (1986). Seriously though this movie is so 80's its incredible it STARS a robot named Number 5 aka Johnny 5 alongside Police Academy star, Steve Guttenberg, and Rat Pack alum, Ally Sheedy, and was Directed by John Badham of such fame as Saturday Night Fever and War Games. OH and an uncomfortable amount of racism? We'll get into it...
Johnny 5 is alive in the latest episode of NostalgiaCast! Join Jonny and Darin for a spirited discussion on John Badham's SHORT CIRCUIT, starring box office behemoths Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy. Love is in the air! Or is that just the smell of deep nostalgia as Seb and Taylor look back to their childhood celebrity crushes. From cartoons to TV to movies, they dive all through pop culture to discuss the ladies (and perhaps even the guys)they were most drawn to back in the day!
This week I talk to Johnny5, the founder and director of TURFInc, a company in Oakland that teaches kids turfing. Turfing is a style of street dance that came out of hyphy in the 90s. TURFInc gives them opportunities to make money and helps them stay off the street by learning marketable skills. Johnny5 has worked with tons of big name artists, he's been featured and finds talent for Yak Films, the premiere dance film company in the world and he's an all around awesome guy with lots of stories about Oakland.
