Ralston College Humanities MA Dr Paul Epstein is a distinguished classicist and Professor Emeritus of Classics at Oklahoma State University, renowned for his extensive knowledge of Greek and Latin literature. In this lecture and discussion—delivered in Savannah during the x term of the inaugural year of Ralston College's MA in the Humanities program—classicist Dr Paul Epstein considers how Sophocles's tragedy Women of Trachis and Aristophanes's comedy Frogs arise from—and reflect upon—the polis-centered polytheism of ancient Greece as it appeared during the Athenian flourishing of the fifth century BC. Professor Epstein explores how these Greek dramas articulate the relationship between human beings, the gods, and the community. Tragedy, in Professor Epstein's account, is about the overall structure of the community, while comedy starts with the individual's exploration of that community. Yet both forms ultimately reveal an understanding of the individual that is inseparable from the polis in which he or she lives. Professor Epstein argues that our contemporary notion of the self as an entity fundamentally separate from context would be entirely alien to the ancient Greeks. Grasping this ancient understanding of the individual is vitally necessary if we are to correctly interpret the literary and philosophical texts of Hellenic antiquity. *In this lecture and discussion, classicist Dr. Paul Epstein considers how Sophocles's tragedy Women of Trachis and Aristophanes's comedy Frogs arise from—and reflect upon—the polis-centered polytheism of ancient Greece during the Athenian flourishing of the fifth century BC. Welcome to another enlightening episode of "Behind the Numbers," hosted by Dave Bookbinder. In this episode, we delve into the crucial topics of leadership, transformation, and culture with the dynamic Paul Epstein, founder of Win Monday and author of "Better Decisions Faster" and "The Power of Playing Offense." Paul shares his extensive experience from 15 years in the NFL and NBA, where he held various roles, including Chief Revenue Officer for the San Francisco 49ers. Paul also recounts his journey from the challenging beginnings with the LA Clippers, dubbed the "worst franchise in sports history," to breaking Super Bowl revenue records and opening Levi's Stadium. His experiences shaped his belief in the "playing offense" mindset in a defensive world, emphasizing the importance of making the next day your responsibility regardless of external adversities. One of the episode's highlights is Paul's insightful discussion on the difference between a team of leaders and a leadership team. He shares a powerful story from his time with the 49ers, where a shift from a "no-because" to a "yes-if" mentality transformed the team's approach to challenges, fostering collaboration and innovation. By choosing warmth and positivity, employees at all levels can create a thriving culture, which Paul believes is a true competitive advantage. In addition, Paul touches on the return on investment (ROI) of leadership, highlighting the significant impact of employee engagement on organizational performance. He shares compelling data and personal anecdotes to illustrate how effective leadership and a positive culture can drive business success. The episode also explores Paul's role as the "WHY Coach" for the 49ers, where he helped individuals discover their purpose and values. Walk away with practical tools to navigate difficult decisions, quiet the voices of fear and doubt, and take action aligned with your true self. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Prioritize imperfect actions over outcome The 4 C's of Better Decisions Faster Tackle your Most Valuable Decisions (MVDs) The head-heart-hands equation The practical power of values over purpose Episode Highlights: [04:19] Support others through shared experiences. Drawing on past lessons, we can best support others facing similar challenges. [08:10] Prioritize imperfect actions over outcome. We are naturally afraid both of the unknown and of chances we didn't take. Prioritizing action over outcome through focusing on progress through imperfect steps rather than results. [11:38] The 4 C's of Better Decisions Faster Paul outlines the 4 C's of decision making as Clarity, Confidence, Conviction. And Courage – and each C builds upon the previous one in a natural progression. [14:29] Tackle your Most Valuable Decisions (MVDs) Paul notes we make 35,000 daily decisions but should focus on the few "Most Valuable Decisions" or MVDs with greater impact. [15:26] Evaluate you MVD with the head-heart-hands equation Identify your Most Valuable Decision or MVD. Then check in with your head (mindset), heart (authenticity), and hands (action) regarding that decision using his equation. [19:25] Confidence = Values x Action Your level of confidence increases based on how frequently values are lived out through actions over time. [29:34] The practical power of values over purpose Paul asserts that while a "why" is important, values provide a more concrete way to guide daily decisions and actions. [43:03] Stop drifting on default, and start living and operating by design. Make choices in a deliberate, purposeful manner aligned with your true values and priorities. Join me in a discussion with actor Rib Hillis and producer Paul Epstein as we discuss the upcoming premiere of INSP's The Tall Tales of Jim Bridger! As a fur trapper, legendary mountain man Jim Bridger explored the entire distant West and survived countless hair-raising adventures. Now, he's a respected trail guide and army scout who knows every river, mountain, and trail of the frontier. As a new generation of settlers, soldiers, and speculators crowd the Bozeman Trail, Bridger's hard-won wisdom is more valuable than ever, even if his famous tall tales sound more like fiction than fact. But the West is still a perilous place, and with danger just around every bend, the greenhorns heading west quickly realize they need Bridger's guidance for much more than the trail. Rib Hillis is an accomplished actor, host, producer, and model known for his work across primetime television, non-scripted reality television, and films spanning multiple genres. Hillis has worked on many notable titles, such as Ugly Betty, Two and a Half Men, and CSI, and has even showcased his talent as a designer on the Emmy-winning ABC show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. His most recent venture is INSP's The Tall Tales of Jim Bridger, in which he plays the titular legend, Jim Bridger himself. Paul Epstein is an Emmy-nominated producer, writer, and director known for his work across scripted, factual, and news television. Epstein has worked with many major TV networks and streamers, including Peacock, Discovery, and MSNBC, and has amassed approximately 40 credits across his 20-year-long career. He has worked on titles such as the true-crime documentary series Who Killed Robert Wone? and the factual drama series Into the Wild Frontier, the most-watched TV series on INSP in 2021.
