It's Friday and we're talking about all the biggest stories in Denver this week. First up, the hotly contested debate over widening Peña Blvd divided City Council on Monday night, with arguments touching on equity, climate concerns, and the future of DIA. Westword reporter Catie Cheshire is on with host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi with the inside scoop. Plus, we've been hearing for years that the long-awaited Buc-ee's in Johnstown would be “more than a gas station,” so we went to see for ourselves. And finally, our wins and fails of the week.  Catie talked about bald eagles and the Colorado schools in March Madness. Bree mentioned RTD elevators and the Oriental Theater. Paul talked about the Business Impact Opportunity Fund and High Line Canal Trail. He also recommends this classic Westword story about how Johnson's Corner stopped being what it used to be. Host Bree Davies certainly did — but instead of leaving her early 90s teenage musings behind lock and key, she joined a handful of fellow brave souls and read directly from her journals at Mortified Colorado a few weeks ago. Today, we're bringing you the live recording of that fateful night on the Oriental Theater where rockstar fantasies, shopping mall dreams, and teenage drama come to life in front of hundreds of strangers. The Making of VIOLENT FEMMES (Self-Titled) - featuring Gordon Gano, Brian Ritchie and Victor DeLorenzo

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 25, 2023 106:02

For the 40th anniversary of Violent Femmes' classic debut album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor DeLorenzo first started playing around Milwaukee as a rhythm section, they met a teenage songwriter named Gordon Gano. Despite having limited experience and still just being in high school, Gano had an extraordinary set of good songs that he had already written. Violent Femmes began playing as a trio but weren't able to get many gigs in town so they started playing acoustically on the street. One day they decided to play for a line of people outside the Oriental Theater who were there to see the Pretenders. James Honeyman-Scott was on a break from soundcheck and became interested in this band playing outside the theater. He convinced the rest of the Pretenders to listen and Chrissie Hynde ended up inviting the Femmes to open for them that night. Though the impromptu gig didn't lead to other opportunities, it gave them a boost of confidence to continue doing what they were doing. Shake Records became interested in releasing an album so they booked studio time with producer Mark Van Hecke. The label deal fell through but they decided to keep the studio time with the help of a loan from DeLorenzo's father. The recordings they made ended up on Slash Records' radar and they eventually released the Violent Femmes debut album as is in 1983. In this episode, Gordon Gano reflects on being a bored and lonely teenager who had a drive to write songs as a way to get out frustration. Brian Ritchie describes his unconventional approach to the acoustic bass guitar that helps give Violent Femmes their signature sound. Victor DeLorenzo offers his perspective on using brushes, a snare drum and his invention called the trancephone in order to have a simple setup that could be moved easily and played on the street. From being booed by thousands of Milwaukeans to punk music played acoustically to embracing the improvisation of Sun Ra to the first album as a mixtape that continues to get passed between generations, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Taking you back another boozy doozy this week, guys! This week's episode is a real bummer, guys. Built as the Iroquois Theater in Chicago, IL after being open just 5 weeks, a fire broke out during a play and roughly 600 people were killed. Known as being worse than the Great Chicago Fire, the remnants of the lives lost are still here today. Shadow figures, children crying, and women screaming are just some of the common paranormal occurrences here, and in Death Alley where the bodies were carried out to in the aftermath. Grab a tissue, everyone, we all need one this time.

This week on the pod, we welcome Jeremy Ebersole. Jeremy is the is the Executive Director of the Milwaukee Preservation Alliance (oh, and the spouse of Imagine MKE's Operations Coordinator Rachel Shields Ebersole.)  First, in the intro, the team chats about “swords and sandals,” Game of Thrones style alliances, and historic preservation projects of note. Jeremy joins around 15:00, and speaks about the history of the built environment, and how curiosity and a reverence for place led him to pursue a career in historic preservation.   Jeremy studied communications and peace studies, and worked in college admissions before pivoting into commercial archeology and eventually working for the National Park Service. He got his Masters in Historic Preservation from the University of Oregon, before taking his current role and moving to Milwaukee. In the conversation, Jeremy discusses Milwaukee's rust belt past, the diversity and friendliness of the city, and how the continued revitalization of spaces tells of the vibrancy of this community. He reflects on how preservation projects have the ability to cross boundaries, create social and environmental solutions and push culture forward. In his work, Jeremy advocates for the future of historic spaces in Milwaukee including the Mitchell Park Domes.   Follow the http://milwaukeepreservationalliance.org/ (Milwaukee Preservation Alliance) and on Facebook, Insta, and Twitter, and get in touch at mpa@milwaukeepreservationalliance.org; Get updates on https://www.facebook.com/SaveOurDomes (Save our Domes on Facebook); http://savethesoldiershome.com/ (Save the Soldiers Home)  Follow Jeremy on Insta: @jeremytheebersole   406 Ephemera  https://franklloydwrightsites.com/wisconsin/index.html (Frank Lloyd Wright)  https://gandhiashramsabarmati.org/en/ (Gandhi's Ashram)   https://www.lrsd.org/Page/2916 (Little Rock Central High)  https://mkefilm.org/oriental-theatre/about (The Oriental Theater)  https://thebasilica.org/ (The Basilica of St. Josaphat)  https://cathedral.org/ (National Cathedral)  “https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pdqf4P9MB8 (La La Land”) (Trailer, YouTube)  https://www.avclub.com/daft-punk-in-coney-island-1798212025 (Daft Punk in Coney Island) (AV Club)  “https://screenrant.com/weird-al-yankovic-movie-daniel-radcliffe-insane-response/ (Weird Al Yankovic Movie Will Be Insane, Teases Daniel Radcliffe)” (Screenrant)  https://podcasts.apple.com/podcast/1357329347 (Urban Spelunking)

The Orpheum we see today is not actually the original building. The original theater was not even called “The Orpheum” - that name wouldn’t appear on the front of the building until 1907. The original theater, built in 1890 on the southwest corner of Main and Beale, was known as the Grand Opera House. It was well known among theater-goers, and it was touted as the fanciest theater outside of New York City. It was managed by Frank Gray, a gentleman that had come up in theater, beginning his career as an usher. Mr. Gray was well-respected in the theater community for reliably booking only the best shows available, and was even nicknamed the “Dean of Southern Theater Managers.”  Grand Opera House In 1899, the Grand Opera House was purchased by John D. Hopkins, already a theater owner in St. Louis and Chicago, who had a background in vaudeville and minstrel shows. The theater was renamed Hopkins Grand Opera. Hopkins immediately began making improvements to the theater, replacing the gas lamps with electric lighting and brightening the drab interior even further by repainting it in grey and gold. Even though vaudeville was the theater’s main focus, they also hosted more refined acts such as the great French stage actor, Sarah Bernhardt, during one of her world tours. Unfortunately, sophisticated acts like Sarah Bernhardt merely acted as a facade for some of Hopkins’s seedier dealings. He was involved in a lawsuit around 1906 because of his plan to sublease the theater to the Eastern Burlesque Wheel. This was not a popular idea among the theater community, and Hopkins drew so much harsh criticism that it prompted him to try and sell the theater. He had no such luck until more than a year later, when the theater changed hands to the Orpheum Vaudeville Circuit. Hopkins died, presumably from kidney failure, just more than two years later. In the New York Times’s public announcement about the theater changing hands, a phrase was used to hint at what kind of theater fare the patrons could expect, and also to appeal to a more elite clientele…  this phrase delights me to no end…  After the functional portion of the announcement, telling about renovations and the name change, it says, “Advanced vaudeville will be served.”   So finally we’re in 1907, and we have a theater in Memphis called “The Orpheum.” The theater saw great success with its vaudeville acts for nearly two decades. In 1923, a fire broke out either during, or just after (depending on the source) a striptease performance by the famous singer and recording artist, Blossom Seeley. Blossom is credited with playing a pivotal role in bringing jazz and ragtime to the mainstream in the US. Fortunately, no one was harmed in the fire, but the theater was a total loss - it burned to the ground. Fire of 1923 The site sat dormant for about 4 years, before ground was broken on a new theater, on the foundation of the old building, but the new building was twice as big, with a much more luxurious appearance. The new theater was designed by sibling architects named Cornelius and George Rapp. Their architecture firm, Rapp & Rapp, has quite the list of well-known buildings that they designed… enough so that they deserve for us to briefly tangent into their works.Rapp & Rapp were known to be the foremost designers of early 20th century movie palaces, having designed more than 400 theaters in their time. Here are some of the buildings that were designed by Rapp & Rapp.  The Central Park Theater in New York CityThe Chicago Theater in - well, ChicagoThe Paramount Building in Times Square - that’s the one with the giant four-faced clock on topThe Nederlander Theater in Chicago, formerly known as the Oriental Theater (the name was changed in 2019). And if you know even basic stuff about Chicago history, you might have heard about the devastating fire that happened in the Iroquois theater in 1903 that killed just short of 600 people,

You may not know who Peter Mortimer is, and that's fine by him. You're almost certainly intimate with is filmography, however, an ever-evolving array of groundbreaking films three decades in the making. Peter and his partners Josh Lowell and Nick Rosen (among many others) have collaborated to define the climbing film medium. They have literally delivered more climbing psych than any other humans on the planet. Peter, and his newly minted company Sender Films, launched his career with quirky turn-of-the-century features such as "Scary Faces," "Front Range Freaks," and "Return 2 Sender." Although the films sold out theaters, "King Lines," "Progression," and the "First Ascent" series truly put Sender on the map. Noting the insatiable hunger for new footage and a theater experience, Peter and Josh joined forces to launch the Reel Rock Film Tour. The crew booked around 50 shows that first year. Reel Rock 14 will log 600+ in 2019, spanning the globe. Somehow, amidst the chaos of building a global film tour, Peter found time to direct, produce, and occasionally helm the camera for "Valley Uprising" and "Dawn Wall," films years in the making. His highly anticipated feature following the career of Marc-Andre Leclerc inches toward the finish line, currently in post-production. It's difficult to overstate the influence and impact Peter's films have had on the climbing world. Where we once devoured DVDs of straight climbing porn (I mean, we still do), Sender's movies have raised the bar in unimaginable ways, allowing global tours, Netflix features, and paving the way to mainstream success (and, you know, the random Oscar for his friend Jimmy Chin). We're so grateful we could sneak into Sender HQ for a quick chat. If you haven't seen Reel Rock 14 yet, grab tickets right now. The films are as strong as any lineup in the 14 year history of the tour. Have a question, feedback, suggestion, or pitch? Launch a missive at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com or DM us at @thethundercling on Instagram. We read and respond to every note. And cheers to Ryne Doughty for the great tunes. Reel Rock in Denver actually booked him to perform before each of the four showings at the Oriental Theater! He put on a helluva show. Happy Turkey Day, you heathens!

Speech, Founder of Arrested Development  Lectures on his New Documentaries, The N-Factory and 16 Bars! Arrested Development's Speech  For Speech it's a homecoming replete with memories of growing up in Milwaukee, the son of a business mom and dad, attending parochial and Milwaukee Public schools; of music always being the dominate force in his life, as if he was born to do only that…and succeeding. Speech recalled helping his parents at age eight deliver the Milwaukee Community Journal to the doorsteps of Black community residents. “I've witnessed their struggle to keep it (the newspaper) alive and also their determination to retain a voice for the Black experience. I guess the desire to make a difference is in my blood…and my desire…and that of my family burns deep in the way my wife and I have brought up our children.” Now the Grammy winning songwriter, producer and singer has made a documentary titled, “16 Bars,” that is premiering October 20th at the Oriental Theater. “16 Bars” is about a unique rehabilitation program in Richmond, VA Speech was involved with that allows prisoners to write and record their own songs. Speech spent 10 days working with the inmates to write and record their original music in a makeshift recording studio. It's in that studio the inmates unearth painful elements of their pasts as they create original music. Through their collaboration with Speech, the inmates begin to move forward with their lives. The music of the film serves as a rare testimony to the messy truth behind the criminal justice system's revolving door. “16 Bars”  premiered last October.

Hey y'all, it's episode 6 of One on Lund! Host Nathan Lund is back from the Orlando Indie Comedy Festival, and boy was it a fun time. Big big thanks to Dave Plotkin, Heather Shaw, Doug McPherson, Tim Murphy, and everyone else involved with making the festival such a great experience. Nathan talks about a dude at the Travelodge pool who had an unfortunate run-in with fire ants, and another dude on his flight home who wasn't too happy to see Nathan as his seat neighbor. He also saw a raccoon!  Nathan also talks about the successful maiden voyage of the new comedy debate show at Oskar Blues Black Buzzard called Sticks and Stones! Hosted by Christie Buchele, the show pits comedians against one another as they debate topics like Manic vs Depressed and Boyz II Men vs Spice Girls. For the first show, Nathan argued on the side of Bad News against Aaron Urist and Fake News. After sharing several examples of increasingly bad news, Nathan ended the night with some great news: he won the debate! Sticks and Stones continues the tradition of a long-running Denver institution: Arguments & Grievances. Hosted by Kevin O'Brien at the Vine St. Pub for six years, A&G was one of the best and most funnest shows in town. It will make its return to the Mile High City on April 13th at the Oriental Theater and will feature many of the talented comics responsible for its success, including Chris Charpentier, Mara Wiles, Jordan Doll, and Sam Tallent. Don't miss it!   One on Lund is a painfully personal podcast featuring Denver Comedy Champion Nathan Lund. April Fools' Day finds us recording our 55th Episode! Returning friend of the show Paul Stroili co-hosts this toe-tapping episode with Gary in Booth One. Paul reveals that he is a motorcycle enthusiast and that his father once raced motorcycles in Europe. Riding a "Hog" is a skill that Gary has long wanted to acquire, though driving a Vespa is probably closer to his ability levels of balance and coordination. Paul gives an update on his hit interactive theatrical production of Tony n' Tina's Wedding. Some cast changes are in store, at least through the summer, and the good news is that the show continues to sell strongly and bookings are being confirmed for well into the fall of 2017. Congratulations to the entire Tony n' Tina's team and best wishes for a long and prosperous run! Our friends at Broadway In Chicago made sure that both Gary and Paul got to see the recent Circus 1903 spectacular at Chicago's Oriental Theater, and they loved both the production and the talented performers. Some of our favorites are Ringmaster Willy Whipsnade (David Williamson), aerialist Lucky Moon (Elena Gatilova), The Cycling Cyclone (Florian Blummel), Elastic Dislocationist Senayet Asefa Amare, and juggler extraordinaire Francois Borie. The highlight of the show are the life-size faux elephants, manipulated by a team of expert puppeteers and designed by the same folks who brought War Horse to life on stage. These pachyderms are so life-like and majestic that you can feel the awe and amazement from the crowd. Their presence, and the focus on the artistry and athleticism of the performers, make this nostalgic homage to the golden age of circus a wonderous experience for young and old alike. Check out the Circus 1903 website for their touring itinerary and don't miss this performance if it comes to a city near you. On a sadder note, producers of the long-running musical The Fantasticks have announced its closing in New York....again! Seems that the money from anonymous donors that has kept the show alive the past couple of years has run out and ticket sales are flagging. This is one of Gary's favorite shows, so if you plan to be in New York before June, try to catch this landmark musical before it closes. Who knows? Your ticket purchase may just contribute to another extension of this beloved show. You can buy tickets here. Speaking of contributions - if you want to support the Booth One mission of bringing you the best in the art of lively conversation and fascinating guests, go to our DONATE button on this web page and you can make a fully tax deductible donation to our cause. It's quick, it's easy, and it would be deeply appreciated by all of us at Booth One. Including Gary's imaginary teacup pig support animal. Down, Jeanette! Gary and Paul reminisce about their splendid dinner the night before at friends Nancy and Arne's Big Night party. It was a recreation of the famous over-the-top dinner from the Stanley Tucci/Tony Shaloub 1996 film Big Night, complete with a heavenly appetizer course followed by the centerpiece of the evening, a homemade Timpano (or Timballo in some references). This was a night of laughter, sparkling conversation and sumptuous food. A truly Booth One experience, with an eclectic guest list in a gorgeous setting in our hosts' Chicago loft with great city views. If you want to try your hand at throwing your own Big Night dinner party, start by getting Lidia's Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine cookbook or The Tucci Cookbook.  Here's a good recipe example for Timpano from the New York Times. Go to this link to see photos and a short video of the timpano presentation from our dinner party. Buon appetito!! Gary revives his Good Times & Bum Times segment with two stories - the "good time" of a Minnesota man who drove his car off an embankment, soared 210 feet over Lake L'Homme Dieu, and landed safely on the partially frozen surface; and the "bum time" of defense attorney Stephen Gutierrez whose pant...

Denver's FaceMan has a reputation for a wild live show. Westword gave the band's 2014 Lost Lake Lounge concert the "Best Stage Art" award for its shark-shaped stage. The trio -- which recently incorporated a horn section -- also organizes festival-sized events like the recent "100 Year Storm" at Denver's Oriental Theater, which brought together 100 Colorado acts to perform over two days. FaceMan recently released the album "Wild And Hunting." The band returned to the CPR Performance Studio for the first time since 2013 to play four songs from the album. They also spoke with Alicia 'Bruce' Mitchell about how they do more with less for live shows, collaborating with a horn section and working with local artists for their album cover art.

I was gone. I was just, hiding in my basement, depressed, for 3 to 6 months. I was just like, so mentally fried. This week I had Scott Labarbera on the patio. Scott is the owner and operator of Tennyson District's Oriental Theater (one of my personal favorite venues in Denver). Under Scott's wing, The Oriental has become a staple of live music and comedy in Denver and is one of the few remaining privately owned and operated theaters in town. Scott's story is one of determination and resilience. He shares with us his fascinating tale of what it took to walk away from a successful business in search of creative fulfillment. He talks of the highs, the lows and every bit in-between that one experiences in their pursuit of happiness. Personally, I get inspired by people like Scott, people that are willing to risk it all in order to search for something more in life. The song for this episode is from the band Paper Bird (who are good friends with The Oriental Theater) and is called As I Am, from their album Rooms. Listen above and as always, subscribe direct on iTunes and RSS. This episode was graciously sponsored by Renegade Brewing Company! Visit their taproom on 9th and Santa Fe or pick up their wonderful assortment of beer at any local liquor store.
