Is the physical store still relevant in an age of online shopping and remote working? According to today’s guest, the answer is an emphatic yes. Doug Stephens is a retail futurist who, as CEO of Retail Prophet, advises the leadership of global brands on what’s next for retail. His client list includes Walmart, IKEA, Disney, LVMH and Microsoft. He’s also the author of the best selling books The Retail Revival and Re-Engineering Retail. In a nutshell, Doug’s view is that the future is bleak for physical shops selling mundane items that are easier (and cheaper) to buy online. But when it comes to high-interest products, he thinks consumers are hungry for physical stores. Especially ones that brim with imaginative experiences – like the Apple Store. Meanwhile, Doug says that for brands that want to boost returns on their marketing spend, exciting physical retail is a no-brainer. Why? For a start, online advertising costs have gone through the roof. That means physical stores are often a cheaper way to make potential new customers aware of your brand. Next, he argues that nothing beats an inviting physical store for enthusing people about a brand and its products – and converting those people into buyers. Meanwhile, Doug has strong views on the future role of landlords. In particular, he says that if landlords want to avoid tumbleweed blowing through their retail spaces, they need to get busy driving footfall. How? By curating spaces and places that people want to spend time in. Listen to our conversation now and you’ll learn: How the relationship between physical and online retail works today (hint: there’s more to it than you think). How to win with physical stores. What kind of physical experiences appeal to younger consumers. Why the changing role of physical retail will impact rent models. How the shift to remote working will change the shape of physical retail. Which landlords are getting it right. And MUCH MUCH more.
So much of the conversation at the moment seems to be about the much talked about ‘re-opening’ of business, a process which slowly started last week. With many businesses still yet to open, Owen Clifford the Head of Retail Sector at Bank of Ireland thinks it's now more important than ever that businesses stay engaged with their customers - he joined Bobby to discuss further. Consumers are increasingly turning to mobile to conduct research, price compare, and purchase products. According to Forrester, over one-third of total U.S. retail sales are influenced by a mobile device during the buying process. As e-commerce continues to grow, will consumers still have an appetite for in-store experiences? Moving forward, how can physical stores coexist with digital stores? To answer these questions, we took a glimpse into the future with The Retail Prophet, Doug Stephens, one of the world’s foremost retail industry futurists. Doug is the author of Reengineering Retail and the Retail Revival, a keynote speaker, and a business advisor for today’s most innovative retail brands, such as Home Depot, Walmart, Disney, and Google. Doug chatted with us about how the purpose of the physical store is shifting away from being a distribution center, towards a media experience, and how elevating the role of the retail associate is a key component to differentiating your customer experience.
Akron is at the tipping point of innovation and entrepreneurship, says Heather Roszczyk, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Advocate for the city of Akron, who joins Shane and Chris to discuss the landscape of local business startups, including the opening of the new Bounce Innovation Hub in downtown Akron. And innovation doesn’t necessarily mean tech-based inventions, it’s merely a revolutionary way of looking at something, she adds. It’s apparent that Akronites take a unique view of the world around us, which is likely why we were selected for eBay’s Retail Revival program, and Heather points this out as an example of e-commerce and bricks and mortar working hand-in-hand. We also learn about Heather's operatic college studies and her endurance running accomplishments, along with what keeps her in Akron. To find out more about Heather’s amazing work in the community, visit akronisforentrepreneurs.org.
