The instant commerce company Gopuff delivers groceries and other must-haves to shoppers' homes within minutes of an online order. Co-founder and co-chief executive Yakir Gola tells Scottish Mortgage manager Tom Slater how he developed the business from a dorm-room experiment into a service relied on by millions, and the changes he's made to prepare for the next phase of growth. Background: Scottish Mortgage first invested in Gopuff in 2021.The US-based company speedily delivers groceries, hot coffee and alcohol, among other items, without charging premium prices. Unlike rivals that send gig workers to pick up goods from third-party stores, Gopuff runs its own warehouses. Gola explains how that decision, taken in the firm's early days, helps it deliver exactly what customers ordered and keeps its prices competitive with the major supermarkets. In this interview, Gola discusses Gopuff's partnerships with Amazon and Starbucks, why it has started offering free deliveries to US households receiving food stamps, and what's next on his to-do list.“Consumers are price-sensitive, so if [Gopuff] can match the prices they experience outside of the convenience category or get closer and closer to those price points, then that just brings more and more users to them,” says Tom Slater.Timecodes: 00:03 Coming up…00:48 Introduction02:28 Yakir Gola interview begins02:44 “5,000 products delivered in as fast as 15 minutes”03:31 Making the family business millions of dollars04:56 A better way to get stuff delivered07:20 Capital from California10:33 Keeping control of its own warehouses13:20 The FAM membership scheme14:44 Free deliveries to families on food stamps18:22 Fresh produce and everyday essentials21:06 Partnering with Starbucks23:37 An alliance with Amazon UK24:52 Focusing on the long term27:24 Recalibrating after Covid30:55 A lesson from Steve Jobs33:06 In growth mode, again35:15 Sharing ownership37:39 Drawing on expert advice41:13 Taking the hassle out of shopping44:09 Tom Slater on the investment case51:26 Podcast lookaheadGlossary (in order of mention): Instant commerce:The category of online retail focused on delivering goods within minutes of an order, rather than within hours or the next day. Also on the show, we will hear about the cat that stole the show at a ballet performance. Another busy Summer weekend in the book. Had a Rock Stop on Friday, spent several hours in the sun & heat on Saturday getting the lawn mowed, jammed out at 80's Fest on Saturday night, and marched in the Sparta Butterfest parade yesterday. Needless to say, I need a nap. But before all that, we've got work to do! In the news this morning, the US & Iran have reached an agreement, a Wausau man pleads guilty to defrauding investors out of millions of dollars, a recall on alfredo sauce, a Wisconsin man allegedly kidnapped his roommate, and a deadly plane crash in Kansas kills the pilot of the plane and 11 skydivers. In sports, the Brewers take two out of three from the Phillies this weekend including the series opener on Friday where the Miz absolutely OWNED Philly, the Knicks beat the Spurs in San Antonio on Saturday night to clinch the NBA title, the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Vegas Golden Knights last night in game six to win Lord Stanley's Cup, Denny Hamlin won his third straight NASCAR Cup race, and Team USA opened up their World Cup with a 4-1 win over Paraguay on Friday. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight An incredible story about an organ donor who sadly passed away at a very young age, but was still able to give the gift of life to several other families in need. Plus, a couple of young teenage boys in Iowa are being recognized for saving an elderly woman who was stuck outside for over 16 hours. Elsewhere in sports, a recap of last night's UFC 250 event at the White House, James Harden gets arrested over the weekend, and former NFL player Aldon Smith dies at the age of 36. Apparently, online shopping addiction is so rampant in South Korea, they've developed an extremely unique way to battle against it. According to some new research, 33% of Generation X(ages 45 to 61) say that they are still dependent on their parents to some degree! And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a Canadian man who got cited for drunken kayaking, a woman in Texas is suing McDonald's because of a problem with her Egg McMuffin, a #FloridaMan who got arrested for DUI and had 34 empty White Claw cans on his passenger seat, and a woman dies tragically in a bungee-jumping accident.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lauren Livak Gilbert, lead of the Digital Shelf Institute, joins the podcast to explore how agentic commerce and AI tools like Amazon's Rufus are transforming product discovery. As the industry shifts from traditional SEO keyword stuffing to natural language and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), sellers must optimize their Product Detail Pages by directly answering consumer Q&As to feed context-driven AI recommendations. Currently, nimble challenger brands are capturing market share by adapting quickly and building off-site trust signals, while large legacy brands are often bogged down by massive SKU counts, messy data taxonomy, and regulatory hurdles. To overcome these challenges and safely scale AI content generation, Lauren emphasizes the critical need for strict E-commerce hygiene and a single source of truth for product data using Product Experience Management platforms like Salsify.

From incorrect product substitutions to outright delivery blunders, these errors can be more than just inconvenient. While mistakes can happen, the real issue lies in how retailers respond. 1. The Importance of Communication: During our discussion, we emphasize how critical it is for manufacturers to communicate recalls effectively. One listener from Kirksville, Missouri, shared their story about discovering a recall on their Triangle Tube Challenger, which they were never informed of. This raises concerns about the accountability of manufacturers in ensuring their customers are aware of potential hazards.2. Understanding the Triangle Tube Challenger: We delve into the specifics of the Triangle Tube Challenger and the issues that can arise with its hybrid heat exchanger design. Eric and Andy reflect on their own experiences with the unit, illustrating how a lack of awareness about recalls can lead to costly repairs and safety concerns for homeowners. The listener's $900 repair bill for parts due to a malfunctioning heat exchanger highlights the real financial implications of these issues.3. Navigating Warranty Issues: A significant part of the conversation centers around how contractors should handle warranty claims. Andy shares his approach of bypassing local sales chains when dealing with warranty issues, opting instead to communicate directly with manufacturers. This strategy can increase the chances of getting parts covered under warranty, a crucial tip for contractors managing similar situations.4. Checking for Recalls: As we discuss the process of checking for recalls, both Eric and Andy admit that they often rely on quick Google searches to find information. They acknowledge the importance of integrating recall checks into their regular service routines. Eric suggests creating a checklist for boiler servicing that includes a step for checking recalls, making it a standard part of their workflow.5. The Role of Manufacturers: The episode also touches on the role of manufacturers in ensuring product safety. We discuss how recalls can be categorized into voluntary and mandatory recalls and the importance of consumer safety organizations in monitoring these recalls. Understanding the government's role in product safety adds another layer to the conversation about consumer rights. Conclusion: In summary, staying informed about boiler recalls is essential for both contractors and homeowners. The story shared by our listener serves as a reminder of the potential dangers and financial burdens that can arise from overlooked safety notifications. By fostering better communication between manufacturers and consumers and incorporating recall checks into regular service routines, we can enhance safety in our homes. Key takeaways include the importance of being proactive about recalls, understanding warranty processes, and the responsibility manufacturers have in keeping their customers informed.Send us a textSend us your feedback or topic ideas over on our social channels!Eric Aune @mechanicalhub Andy Mickelson @mick_plumbNewsletter sign up: https://bit.ly/MH_email
