This week on The Vergecast, guest host Mia Sato talks to YouTube fitness pioneer Cassey Ho (better known as Blogilates) about the well-oiled machine that is the dupe economy. Ho shares her experience creating her own line of athletic wear that sooner or later gets ripped off by countless copycats — and how she tries to fight back. Then, Mia brings an audio diary from a visit to Fabscrap, a textile recycling facility in Brooklyn, that is working to save fabric and other materials from the landfill. Fashion is a wasteful industry, not unlike tech — luckily, there are people like Fabscrap staff and volunteers who are working towards solutions. Finally, Victoria Song swings by to help answer a hotline question about how to make the high-tech Clueless closet a reality. If you have a question for us, call 866-VERGE11 or email vergecast@theverge.com. What happens when AI becomes your personal shopping assistant and websites become data sources rather than destinations?Join hosts Chuck Moxley and Nick Paladino as they explore the future of AI-powered shopping and what it means for e-commerce  as we know it. Chuck and Nick reveal their contrasting shopping styles—Nick's minimalist approach that makes him an ideal early adopter for bot shopping, versus Chuck's research-heavy methodology that requires examining every detail before purchasing. They explore real examples from Nick's attempt to find an obscure watch style through ChatGPT, and discuss how major retailers like Walmart are already experimenting with their own shopping bots to compete with third-party AI platforms.Main takeaways from the episode include:Start preparing now — Even if AI shopping represents a small percentage today, retailers who don't optimize for AI discovery and structured data will miss customers who shift to conversational commerce.Understand your customer segments — Different shopping styles (minimalist versus research-heavy) will determine which customers embrace AI shopping first, so know which segment you can't afford to lose.Optimize for AI visibility — Ensure your products show up in AI results by implementing proper schema markup and maintaining strong search rankings, as these directly influence AI recommendations and shopping bot results.Want more tips and strategies to create frictionless user experiences? Your laundry detergent could be causing your child's mysterious rash, and the cleaning industry doesn't want you to know it.In this eye-opening conversation with Steven, founder of Truly Free Home, I dive deep into the toxic reality of conventional cleaning products. Steven's journey began when his infant son developed a horrific rash from store-bought laundry detergent: a crisis that transformed him from a New York City chef into a mission-driven entrepreneur determined to create truly non-toxic cleaning products that actually work. What makes this conversation particularly powerful is Steven's unfiltered honesty about the cleaning industry's dirty secrets. With over 12,000 chemicals banned in Europe but only 16 restricted in the US, American consumers are largely unprotected from harmful ingredients hiding in everyday products. Through years of innovation and testing, Truly Free has developed effective, non-toxic alternatives that perform in real-world conditions - even in hard water.Beyond creating safer products, Truly Free is making a global impact through initiatives that rescue women from slavery and provide sustainable employment. Now, Steven is expanding his mission with Truly Free Market, a decentralized social commerce platform designed to connect mission-driven brands with conscious consumers. Shoot us a Text.Episode #1031: Today we're talking about Trump's possible easing of auto tariffs ahead of a Michigan trip, GM's courtroom defense over driver data privacy, and why e-commerce might be losing its edge as shoppers crave more fun and surprise. As he prepares to visit Michigan for the 100-day mark of his second term, President Trump is signaling potential changes that could ease the auto industry's tariff burdens. The administration is considering adjustments to tariffs on imported auto parts and may exempt automakers from certain steel and aluminum duties. The policy shift, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, appears aimed at supporting domestic manufacturers and suppliers.Proposed changes would address the “stacking” of tariffs—where multiple levies apply to the same imported vehicle—by potentially eliminating overlapping duties. The potential relief follows a joint letter from major automakers, including GM and Toyota, urging the administration to reconsider.“This deal is a major victory for the president's trade policy,” said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, “by rewarding companies who manufacture domestically.”General Motors is facing a wave of lawsuits accusing the automaker of secretly collecting and selling drivers' behavioral data—claims GM is now trying to dismiss with a bold new legal argument. The lawsuits began in March 2024, alleging GM, OnStar, and data firms like LexisNexis shared driver behavior data without proper consent.GM discontinued its Smart Driver program in April 2024 and ended partnerships with LexisNexis and Verisk after public backlash. Now, GM argues the data collection didn't violate privacy because driving behavior on public roads isn't protected under privacy laws.“Driving data includes vehicle location, routes, braking events, and speed—all occurring on public thoroughfares,” GM said in its dismissal filing.“Roadways are public, and these behaviors are observed by all,” GM stated, citing precedent that public conduct doesn't carry a reasonable expectation of privacy.A new study from Criteo reveals that the digital checkout rush might be fading, with consumers craving the discovery and delight of in-store shopping.More than 75% of consumers say e-commerce is functional—but not fun—with 29% calling it a chore.Shoppers miss the thrill of the unexpected: 36% long for the “surprise finds” that often come in-store.A majority find online shopping overwhelming (78%) and lonely (79%), with only half describing it as enjoyable. While data privacy remains a concern, 43% of consumers are open to sharing data for a more tailored experience.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

This past week, I was doing some online window shopping for one of my clients. Her daughter is getting married later this year and so we're on the hunt for the perfect mother-of-the-bride dress! Imagine my excitement when I stumbled upon the unicorn dress we've been looking for. It was not only in one of the wedding colors, but my client's exact eye color (a match made in heaven). It was a stunning silhouette for her figure, modest to suit her personal taste, and well within her ideal price point. I mean, this dress checked all the boxes. I was about to excitedly save it to her Pinterest window shopping board as a possibility and then… my heart sank.   As I began browsing through all of the amazing 5-star reviews, I noticed something strange. Each and every happy customer photo modeling this dress was FAKE. They were all very clearly Photoshopped or AI generated on top of what I can only imagine each wedding party member was actually wearing on those special days. I ran a quick Google search on the store and saw that they had received just as many 1-star reviews as 5-star reviews and very little in-between. It was a scam website.   Has this ever happened to you? You're halfway through the checkout process and you get this internal inkling that something's not right? Maybe you've been burned by a bad online shopping experience in the past? You received the wrong item, a fake item, or no item at all. Maybe you're terrified to shop online because you don't know which brands and products you can trust!   Friend, this episode is for you. Today, I'm breaking down 8 online shopping red flags you need to watch out for so you can avoid the scammers, those hidden shipping fees, and the subpar pieces your closet simply doesn't have room for anymore. If you're in the process of up-leveling your wardrobe, it's time to raise the bar on what you're willing to buy online.
