In this episode we're going back in time to talk about Ford Fairlane, a character created by Rex Weiner for a series of stories published in the late ‘70s in the now-defunct ‘New York Rocker' and a second series published in the early ‘80s in the ‘LA Weekly'. The 1990 movie ‘The Adventures of Ford Fairlane' starring Andrew Dice Clay is loosely based on the character Rex created. It wasn't until 2018 that the New York and LA stories were finally published in their entirety in book form, entitled ‘The (Original) Adventures of Ford Fairlane', and I'm jazzed that I get to chat with Rex about his book. In lieu of a regular episode this week, I'm coming at you from the Rock is Lit Vault. I'm excited about interviewing Rex Weiner, author of ‘The (Original) Adventures of Ford Fairlane', tomorrow night (3/24/2023) for an upcoming episode of Rock is Lit. Since half of Rex's Ford Fairlane stories take place during the early ‘80s punk rock scene in LA, I thought it would be fun to revisit my chat with Pleasant Gehman about that period. This outtake from my interview with Pleasant is from Episode 4 of Rock is Lit, which features Janet Fitch's novel ‘Paint It Black', set during that time and place. Listen to EP4 of Rock is Lit here. Pleasant Gehman is a writer, musician, and host of The Devil's Music podcast, also on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Stay tuned for the next full episode of Rock is Lit, which will drop next week. Hunter S. Thompson, Lester Bangs, Legs McNeil, Nick Tosches, Rex Weiner, and because I'm feeling sassy as hell, Michael O'Donoghue. Yep, this is a purely selfish and HUGELY self-indulgent episode where I read you things that recently made my heart swoon. Things I love for the pure energy of the language used, but that I can't graft onto any one band or film episode. Much brutality and obnoxiousness and vulgarity in this episode. But it's endearing and inspiring because it's delivered to us by a reckless and desperate generation with heart and intellect and guts, god damn it. Not for the easily offended, especially those who refuse to believe that historical/cultural context should affect how we process language that we personally wouldn't use today, even around our friends. Not asking anyone to love it or sign off on it, but I will not pretend I have the authority or responsibility to make the nasty words palatable for people who will be offended by them regardless. If you are explaining, you are losing, as someone much smarter than myself on NPR said today about political debate tactics. “I really tried to create a band that I would love, if they were real”— Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Daisy Jones & The Six Fiction writers have long been seduced by the anarchy, defiance, and raw power of rock ‘n roll, creating stories about music, the people who make it, and the characters who love it with the same intensity as the most ambitious concept albums. But until Rock is Lit first aired in September 2022, there had never been a podcast devoted to this art form—the rock novel—and the show remains a singularity. In each episode, host Christy Alexander Hallberg, author of the award-winning rock novel Searching for Jimmy Page (Livingston Press, 2021), interviews authors about craft and the musical inspiration behind their work, then brings in music experts, like legendary groupie Pamela Des Barres, to add real-world context to the bands or musical periods featured in the novels. Hallberg has quickly earned a reputation as a meticulous researcher and creative producer, frequently garnering compliments from guests such as Rex Weiner, author of The (Original) Adventures of Ford Fairlane: “You're so well versed in what I wrote and, of course, your own rock ‘n roll history is pretty terrific.” The podcast's growing roster of rock novels includes: Dana Spiotta's National Book Award-nominated Eat the Document, works by BIPOC authors like Chris L. Terry's Black Card, metal-centric novels like John Wray's Gone to the Wolves, YA LGBTQ debuts like Jessamyn Violet's Secret Rules to Being a Rockstar, Scifi rock novels like Sarah Pinsker's Nebula Award-winning A Song For A New Day, rock novels adapted to film like Garth Risk Hallberg's City on Fire, and celebrity rock novels like the legendary Suzi Quatro's The Hurricane. The Adventures of Ford Fairlane is the pick of Patreon Timothy this week! It's a movie Tim used to watch with his best mate Paul, and argue the toss over whether it was a hidden gem or turd. Directed by Renny Harlin, screenplay by David Arnott, James Cappe, and Daniel Waters and based on characters created by Rex Weiner. Neither Chris and Dave have seen this 1990 bomb, and you'll have to listen to see how it got on........ but there will be a no-prize awarded for guessing the outcome. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: Ford "Mr. Rock n' Roll Detective" Fairlane is experiencing problems, and it's not with the opposite sex. One of them is that all the rock stars pay him with drumsticks, koala bears, food processors, and bicycle shorts. Rex Weiner – modern day storytelling: rexweiner.com . Conversation about how writing and storytelling has changed in the modern day, with digital technology and writers workshops teaching people how to write. Mass shootings make up 20% of people who dies by gun violence per year. 80% of the 100 + people who die by gun violence in the States are not felled by mass shootings, but daily gun violence. Why can’t we legislate? Aura Vasquez – LADWP Commissioner to talk about the Green New Deal. We need to rethink the way we live as Angelenos if we are ever going to get to 100% renewable energy, and this Mayor is going to be talking about a host of clean energy options – from wind to solar to renewable storage devices – to get us there.

Here it is, our review of an unexpected, but wholly welcome book, the stories in which inspired what MUST be Andrew Dice Clay's peak acting performance. We may also talk about porn magazines and Leonardo DiCaprio's "Pussy Posse". It's pretty great.
