This week, Legs McNeil reports on the murder of Melvin Combs—the man who was Sean “Diddy” Combs's father. As Legs reports, “Pretty Boy Melvin,” who had links to the notorious drug kingpin Frank Lucas, was gunned down in 1972, possibly by New York City's Gambino crime family for being a snitch. Then Jonathan Margolis reports on why Londoners may find themselves with a shortage of drinking water. And finally, we have a look at a bookshop in London that is a favorite haunt of espionage agents.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The 70s were the Me Decade, and the 80s were the Greed Is Good decade. But what is this strange decade of the 20s we are living in now? Here at Air Mail, we're calling it “the Raging 20s,” and Bruce Handy explains why. Then John Glatt has the bizarre true-crime story of a Utah mother of three whose husband died from poisoning. She then wrote a bereavement book for kids, and you won't believe what happened next. And speaking of wild: Legs McNeil has the inside story of two very strange bedfellows. Specifically, how Kenneth Anger, the writer who influenced everyone from Led Zeppelin to Martin Scorsese, became the unlikely friend of Alfred Kinsey, the father of the sexual revolution. All this and more make this a show you won't want to miss.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hunter S. Thompson, Lester Bangs, Legs McNeil, Nick Tosches, Rex Weiner, and because I'm feeling sassy as hell, Michael O'Donoghue. Yep, this is a purely selfish and HUGELY self-indulgent episode where I read you things that recently made my heart swoon. Things I love for the pure energy of the language used, but that I can't graft onto any one band or film episode. Much brutality and obnoxiousness and vulgarity in this episode. But it's endearing and inspiring because it's delivered to us by a reckless and desperate generation with heart and intellect and guts, god damn it. Not for the easily offended, especially those who refuse to believe that historical/cultural context should affect how we process language that we personally wouldn't use today, even around our friends.  Not asking anyone to love it or sign off on it, but I will not pretend I have the authority or responsibility to make the nasty words palatable for people who will be offended by them regardless. If you are explaining, you are losing, as someone much smarter than myself on NPR said today about political debate tactics.   Choose your preferred method of supporting the show for no money or maybe some money PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/whatsamatta Shirts: https://www.bonfire.com/store/justtheworstshirtsever/ Subscribe to me on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCV4Up7xGgjioEC07bjwu4mQ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RockFilmRock Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/justtheworstever/ Suicide Prevention, Text/Call: 988 https://afsp.org/ National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673 https://www.rainn.org/resources   My version of "Scarecrow" featured at the end of the episode. If you appreciate Parallax Views and the work of J.G. Michael please consider supporting the show through Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/parallaxviews On this edition of Parallax Views, filmmaker and writer Michael Lee Nirenberg joins us to discuss a tale of two American environmental disasters and the communities that fought for justice against those they deemed responsible for the incidents. Earth A.D.: The Poisoning of the American Landscape and the Communities That Fought Back is a tour-de-force oral history that chronicles the environmental devastation resulting from American Superfund sites at Tar Creek in Oklahoma and Newton Creek in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY. Nirenberg paints a picture that involves citizens, activists, politicians, and corporate leaders through hundreds of interviews that reveal not only the ways that wealth and racism intersect with how environmental disaster are dealt with in different communities but also how the urban-rural divide plays a role in this regard as well. Recalling the style of music journalist Legs McNeil, Nirenberg's oral history brims with a punk rock verve that extends far beyond its title referencing The Misfits. In this conversation we discuss a number of topics including the horrors of lead poisoning, environmentalism as an issue that should transcend the left/right divide, environmental racism, Michael's film work and his documentary on Hustler's Larry Flynt (as well as his interview with the controversial pornographer Al Goldstein of Screw Magazine infamy!), the Native American communities like the Quapaw tribe who are negatively impacted by environmental disasters and grassroots activists like Tar Creekkeeper Rebecca Jim and Don Ackerman, class and race as they relate to who is harmed most by environmental catastrophes, local corruption and how it effects the response to environmental disasters, nuclear power and energy needs, the difference between the Newton Creek and Tar Creek disasters, ecohorror, the influence of punk and metal on Michael's work, and much, much more.

Sully talks about punk music not as a genre but as a lifestyle.  A movement toward original thought and creativity fueled by a Do-it-yourself attitude.  At almost 50 years old Sully is extremely candid about his failures and successes as a songwriter, tennis pro, and father of three.  He struggles paycheck to paycheck to make ends meat yet still finds the time to write songs and be creative.  Much in the vein of Andrew Savage's book, EVERY TOOL IS A HAMMER and Mihaly Czikszentmihalyi's pivotal works on FLOW and CREATIVITY, Sully not only looks to inspire but to explore these proposed concepts through listening and discussion and how they pertain to happiness, fulfillment, and purpose.  Using Please Kill Me (the uncensored oral history of punk) by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain as his bible he reads passages from the book to shed light on the artists and mindsets that got the movement moving.  Ryan Black/Blizzle raises questions about musical fads like EMO with such bands as Dashboard Confessional and The Spill Canvas while Sully provides historical and cultural context for those fads.  Sully and Black, both fans of Jazz, talk about it's influence on other musical art forms.  From jazz great Ornette Coleman's song, Focus on Sanity from his album, The Shape of Jazz to Come to the Swedish hardcore punk band REFUSED's song Liberation Frequency from their album, The Shape of Punk to Come nothing is left off the table.  Black's thoughtful questioning reveals his own curiosity and also shows the respect him and Sully have for music as well as one another.  Much like their songwriting process for Theft To The Gallows and Black's Backbone the give and take between them is obvious and authentic.  List of songs in this episode and songs that almost made this episode:batman theme, scrape away, mr. pharmacist, surfin' bird, night of the phantom, dirty red, we want the airwaves, kung fu girls, horizontal twist, I want to know, growing concern, old new york, rape me, francis farmer will get her revenge on seattle, fake my own death, king of contradiction, ma poubelle, rock and roll, foggy notion, friction, foxhole, turnover, waiting room, one more time, guns on the roof, focus on sanity, the shape of punk to come, liberation frequency, double dare you, magnet, rebel girl, uncle bob, scatter the rats, I am a poseur, oh, bondage! up yours!, typical girls, walkabout

Sully discovers Jeffrey Lewis' song Complete History Of Punk Rock  sending him down the rabbit hole of listening to all of Jeffrey's music from the album The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane to his new release Bad Wiring.  Enthralled by Jeffrey's musical and lyrical sensibilities, as well as his underground comic book FUFF, Sully reaches out to talk about the origins of the punk ethos from 1960's folk revival and psychedelic / freak-folk groups  through the 1970's scene on both sides of the Atlantic and his work as an artist.  The two songwriters talk about creative process, touring, and what it means to be an independent artist these days.  Jeffrey references the Anti Folk bands Prewar Yardsale, The Moldy Peaches, indie rock band Cornershop, and his musical heroes Daniel Johnston and David Berman from the Silver Jews.  As always Sully packs this episode with mostly full length songs, "because songs were made to be listened to from beginning to end and not in little snippets".  Sully references the documentary Dylan: Roads Rapidly Changing, and the book Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain in this two part episode as he does in past and future ones.  It is the definitive book in Sully' s opinion, "an essential read for all music enthusiasts".  List of songs in these two episodes:something good, kill the ghoul, anthem, I know what I want, don't play cards with satan,  what went wrong,  downloading porn with davo, sleep on the left side,  avenue a shanghai hollywood, no lsd tonight, I saw a hippie girl on 8th avenue, came here looking, sad screaming old man, mosquito mass-murderist, whistle past the graveyard, cult boyfriend, babe I'm gonna leave you, I shit my pants, new amphetamine shriek, bodies, punk is dead, just like Dresden '45

Most people know that the “Ramones” name was for the stage, although few sought out and became their stage persona more completely than the former Jeffry Hyman, a spindly, troubled boy from Queens. If you’re a Ramones fan—or just fascinated with stories of familial disfunction—you’re going to find the new book, I Slept With Joey Ramone: A Family Memoir, an irresistible attraction. LEGS McNEIL AUDIO EXCERPT: "All along, Mickey was writing songs with Joey and never credited. Years and years of frustration came to light when Bud Light used 'Blitzkrieg Bop' in a commercial. I don't think he wanted a lot of money; he wanted recognition. He was there in the studio (when the song was originally recorded), harmonizing with Joey because their voices were almost identical. It was kinda like The Beach Boys, with Carl and Brian Wilson harmonizing with each other." The story was written by Joey’s younger brother, Mitchell Hyman, a.k.a. Mickey Leigh, with help from Legs McNeil, a long-time friend of both brothers and the author of the classic music history, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored History of Punk. Legs, today making his second appearance on Mr. Media, got to know Joey and Mickey in the late ‘70s when he and John Holmstrom co-founded the legendary Punk magazine. Please Kill Me is the first oral history of the most nihilist of all pop movements. Iggy Pop, Danny Fields, Dee Dee and Joey Ramone, Malcom McLaren, Jim Carroll, and scores of other famous and infamous punk figures lend their voices to this definitive account of that outrageous, explosive era. From its origins in the twilight years of Andy Warhol’s New York reign to its last gasps as eighties corporate rock, the phenomenon known as punk is scrutinized, eulogized, and idealized by the people who were there and who made it happen.Legs McNeil was the Resident Punk at Punk Magazine, a senior editor at Spin, and currently contributes to Vice. His other works include The Other Hollywood: The Uncensored Oral History of the Film Industry as well as Dear Nobody: The True Diary of Mary Rose, which he co-edited with Gillian McCain. He currently lives in Schwenksville, PA. I got more than I bargained for when I interviewed John Holmstrom — which is saying a lot when you know going into things that you’re sitting down with the guy who co-founded Punk Magazine for a couple of hours in an East Village watering hole. We kick things off with a conversation about Holmstrom’s time at SVA, which led to part time gigs working with comics legends Harvey Kurtzman and Will Eisner. In 1975, Holmstrom, publisher Ged Dunn and (past guest) Legs McNeil co-founded Punk, a magazine that helped cement the name for the burgeoning undergrounding music bubbling up around them. Holmstrom edited the magazine and contributed Mad-inspired cartooning that would become a trademark of the scene and also contributed cover art for the iconic Ramones records, Rocket to Russia and Road to Ruin. In the years following Punk’s folding in 1979, the artist has contributed work to a wide range of publications including Scholastic’s Bananas Magazine, Spin, The Village Voice and Heavy Metal, along with an extended stint at pot culture chronicler High Times, where he ultimately served as publisher and president. Holmstrom sat down at a table at Manitoba’s, the East Village bar run by the Dictators front man of the same name. It a long and fascinating look at an artist who bridges a wide range of cultural touchstones and who, thanks to events like the on-going Ramones retrospective at the Queens Museum, appears to finally be getting his due.

John Doe and Exene Cervenka probably never dreamed, when they met at a Venice, California, poetry workshop in 1976, that one day they would be regarded as the core of a musical movement that shook, stirred and ripped corporate rock. I didn’t say they ultimately prevented its rise – I wish they had – but as co-founders of the LA punk band X, they built one of the first bulwarks against the tide of homogenized rock ‘n’ roll. JOHN DOE podcast excerpt: "X — our music — was always accessible. We weren’t trying to piss people off; we just did it naturally. There was no ‘marketing’; the term barely existed. The way you were DIY in those days was you went out, met people, lived your life, did your thing. I have no regrets; that’s the way you get cancer." The Westerner by John Doe. Order your copy today by clicking on the album cover above![ The LA punk scene – fortified with nutrients that included X, Black Flag, The Germs, The Blasters, Los Lobos, and yes, even The Go-Go’s – was a regional reflection of what was happening all over the world in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Manhattan had its Ramones, Television and the New York Dolls; London produced the Sex Pistols, The Clash and Madness. It was an era that captured what rock ‘n’ roll should be: revolutionary, off-putting, controversial, against-the-grain. JOHN DOE podcast excerpt: "(X's 2016 appearance on NPR's 'Fresh Air' with Terry Gross) was not the first time people have tried to explain X's harmony in somewhat strange or even a backhanded compliment. Exene didn't know traditional harmony. She would get to that at times, then she would stray. She just sang what she heard." Doe captures the LA punk sound in his new book, Under the Big Black Sun: A Personal History of L.A. Punk, which he wrote and edited with Tom DeSavia, and essays contributed by Henry Rollins of Black Flag, Jane Weidlin and Charlotte Caffrey of The Go-Gos, Dave Alvin of The Blasters, Robert Lopez – El Vez – of The Zeros, and his long-time musical partner and former domestic partner, Exene Cervenka. (And yes, I won’t miss an opportunity to point out that Exene grew up here in St. Petersburg.) The book is a great companion piece to Legs McNeil’s Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk. I feel a bit bad entering the hotel room. There was a bit of a miscommunication on timing, and Legs McNeil is clearly quite comfortable lying in bed watching Law and Order. It’s an episode he’s already seen multiple times, a fact he lets be known by rattling off the entire plot in a couple of quick sentences, so he’ll be able to give me his undivided attention as Detective Briscoe successfully apprehends some pure. McNeil and frequent collaborator Gillian McCain finished up an talk at the Rough Trade record store earlier in the evening, discussing their latest, Dear Nobody, a posthumously published diary of troubled young teenager, Mary Rose, though the pair had devoted most of the New York City trip to a forthcoming book focused on Charles Manson, which McNeil promises will shed new light on the well trod story — even if he’s admittedly a bit cagey on the specifics. McNeil and McCain’s first — and best-known — collaboration was 1996’s Please Kill Me, an oral history of punk rock’s early years that is widely regarded as the definitive document of the movement’s New York City roots. It’s a story McNeil knows as well as anyone, as the co-founder of Punk Magazine, the iconic fanzine that give the CBGBs movement a name. These days the author no longer calls New York his home, having traded in the skyrocketing rents and disappearing culture for a far more bucolic life in a small Pennsylvanian town, where he lives, writes and catches the occasional rerun of Law and Order.
