Send us a textMarijuana in large part accelerated Fairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz's transition from working at a corporate law firm to becoming a criminal defense lawyer many years ago. Jon Katz one day read about a federal prosecutor's issuance of a subpoena for High Times Magazine's advertiser records. Jon figured that the prosecutor was going after customers of hydroponic indoor marijuana growers. In protest, Jon took out a subscription to High Times, and told the same by letter to the then-federal attorney general and High Times. As a result of that subscription, Jon learned about criminal defense lawyer Don Fiedler, who was then national director of NORML, who helped Jon steer his path towards criminal defense. In rapid order, Jon joined the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and met its then-executive director Keith Stroup. the founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), which is devoted to marijuana consumers, rather than to manufacturers and sellers. Jon had previously read the authorized NORML biography High in America, and has been fascinated by Keith's story. Keith has for many years been back with NORML, where he is current legal counsel. The story of marijuana legalization and decriminalization provides strong lessons for criminal defense lawyers and their clients, about perseverance, team building and reversing roles. Marijuana remains criminalized at the federal level, but its odor is no longer a basis under Virginia law for a police search, and possession of designated amounts is no longer an offense in Virginia, which still needs legalized retail sales beyond medicinal sales. Many marijuana reformers have worked tirelessly and creatively over the decades to get us to where we are now. The team building involved in obtaining marijuana reform goes well beyond so-called political progressives. The reversing roles looks at what makes politicians and other policymakers tick for no longer demonizing marijuana. On this episode of Beat the Prosecution, Jon welcomes Keith Stroup and NORML political director Morgan Fox, for an eye-opening look at how far marijuana reform has come and what still needs to be done. Jon believes strongly in decriminalizing all drugs, as well. For more information about NORML and how to join and donate to the group, visit NORML.org. Welcome to Season 2! Ummm...uh...yeah...it's the 4:20 episode with Malcolm MacKinnon, Photographer and Editor for High Times Magazine in it's glory days. It's a cue the 500mg gummie-puck and THC infused seltzer episode...and all that that implies. From a time when it was an outlaw thing to do, to photograph the country's best pot for the centerfold in High Times Magazine! Malcolm was editor in the magazine's marijuana hey-dey, it was the bible of the counter-culture for nearly 50 years. But like all things, time, money, and, uh...never mind. We get a serious contact high from the inside out with this candid walk down memory lane. What can you say, the grass is always green, but not necessarily greener in a place like that. You be the judge on this revealing episode - too good to give away with bulletpoints! Oh - we did at least remember dig deep into the connection between High Times and Rush. And Malcolm shares many other details from his fascinating career as a traveling pot journalist. The wheel gives us Stick It Out off 1993's Counterparts. Again, the voting turns out in surprising ways, this time with Schatz pulling a double take move, and as we know, that's always a treat for this weekly fanboy-fest. We name-drop usual suspects like rushvault.com, and we thought fondly of Ed from rushisaband.com. We even give a shout-out to our sponsors Danforth & Pape, and podcastle.ai in an even betterer treatment than last time. Hello, welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. On Saturday, April 20th, Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions returned to the esoteric grounds of the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles for a living taping with guest host Will Sheff (Okkervil River) in conversation author Sean Howe, discussing Agents of Chaos: Thomas King Forçade, High Times, and the Paranoid End of the 1970s, book on High Times founder, provocateur, and trickster Thomas King Forçade as part of PRS' Earth Day celebration Plantstock. I am such a big fan of PRS, where we recorded a live talk with Matt Marble on the esoteric influences of Arthur Russell last fall. It's a place that invites inquiry, rewards curiosity, and enjoys the beauty of the unknown. Which makes it a perfect setting for this talk. Howe's Agents of Chaos is a time machine that transports the reader directly to the chaotic, funky-smelling center of the paranoid 1970s. The result of almost a decade of sleuthing, Howe's fascinating book details the true story of Thomas King Forçade, mysterious founder of High Times Magazine, cannabis kingpin, el supremo of the Underground Press Syndicate, Yippie agitator, known drug smuggler, and possible CIA spook. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts. Next week on Transmissions? Shabaka Hutchings. For heads, by heads. Today we'll be rolling through the topics and facts that stoners try to sweep under the rug. From CHS to drug interactions to the compounds in your concentrates, why do stoners avoid these topics? No cannabis users want to talk badly about cannabis, especially with its historical stigma surrounding the plant. But whether you like it or not, there is more research needed on cannabis, and a good start is being honest about its risks and effects and how we discover them. Emma Chasen, co-owner and operator of Eminent Consulting, a cannabis consulting business, comes in hot to break the Sativa/Indica binary and some popular myths in cannabis. Backed with years of experience and a degree in Medicinal Plant Research, Emma is passionate about educating others on cannabis. What people don't know, does hurt them and as advocates, it's our job to educate those around us. Knowing what is in your cannabis and how these compounds effect you is important, no matter who or where you're buying from. After listening, what experiences have you had with different kinds of cannabis? Have you or a friend/ family member ever experienced CHS? How do you feel about the Indica/Sativa binary? Let me know in the comments below! 3 Lessons Learned: RSO is the only concentrate with scientific evidence to backup its medicinal properties in high dosages. Cannabis and hemp are bio-accumulators, meaning that they are a plant that gradually absorbs substances that are in the ground they're growing in at a faster rate than the substance is lost or metabolized by the plant. Because cannabis is not federally legal, there are no set lab procedures in place for analytical testing of cannabis. When Oregon tested the variances of all their labs within the industry, they found a 10% variance across the board, showing the need for consistent regulations for testing in the cannabis industry. List of Topics/subjects discussed: The lack of scientific data backing Indica/ Sativa differences The high variability of cannabis between users Manipulative marketing within the cannabis industry How to find the good companies to support How the industry can better predict the effects and experiences of specific strains Oklahoma and how their licensing will in turn effect their market Craft cannabis and its future Concentrates and it's potency and legitimacy in the medical market Personal experiences with concentrates Additive terpenes and the effects Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Esters: What are they? Where are they? Epidiolex Trials Lab testing in the cannabis industry and why it differs Titration of dosing, macrodosing and their therapeutic value Bad drug interactions with CBD and THC How to buy cannabis the right way. Bio-accumulation occurs when an organism absorbs a substance at a rate faster than that at which the substance is lost or eliminate. Esters: Volatile flavor molecules/ a chemical compound derived from substitution reaction of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. Guest Bio and Social Media Links: Emma Chasen has a mission to educate people on the science behind Cannabis so that they may take charge of their own healing. After graduating from Brown University in 2014 with a degree in Medicinal Plant Research, Emma went on to coordinate Clinical Oncology trials with the Brown University Oncology Research Group. When her supervisor refused a Cannabis trial in favor of another expensive pharmaceutical drug, Emma quit and headed across the country to Portland, OR. She found her way to Farma, the popular Portland dispensary that takes a more scientific approach to Cannabis; rejecting the Indica/Sativa binary and instead focusing on chemotypes to determine effect. She began her career at Farma as a budtender and was quickly promoted to General Manager and eventually to Director of Education. In this role she was able to focus on educational efforts and create a robust training curriculum that focused on cannabis science, product knowledge and empathetic patient care. Emma now co-owns and operates Eminent Consulting, a cannabis consulting business that offers educational training and craft industry development for cannabis industry professionals and businesses. Within a few months he started his dream job at the Hash museum owned by Sensi Seeds where he could educate himself and others on the myriad of uses of hemp and cannabis. After 3 years working for the Hash Museum/Sensi Seeds he was asked to host the 6th annual Cannabis Cup. Adam quit working for Sensi Seeds and together with two friends he started his first company called ‘Cannabis in Amsterdam' aka C.I.A. They helped create a framework where they separated the seed companies from the coffeeshops and this highly successful formula is still used by High Times Magazine to this day. At C.I.A his seed company T.H.Seeds® was born where world famous strains such as Bubblegum, S.A.G.E. ®, Heavy Duty Fruity®, and Chocolate Chunk were developed. In 1995 Hemp Works, Europe's first dedicated Hemp store was opened. This gave Adam and his partner the opportunity to start their own in-house clothing label called Hemp HoodLamb®, an independent hemp label offering a broad collection of refreshing hemp gear. With HoodLamb® their main aim was to promote a contra-movement against the mass-production and mass-pollution of the clothing industry and to demonstrate that a solution for sustainable living can be found in hemp. Their main item, the HoodLamb jacket, the sturdiest, warmest and most eco friendly jacket was made even more functional with Adam's stony savvy features such as built in paper rolling dispenser and secret pockets. With features like that there is no wonder that this jacket is worn by the biggest stoners in the world such as Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, Woody Harrelson just to name a few. After 16 years running his businesses in Amsterdam, Adam decided to move back home to the US due to the changes in the political climate both in Amsterdam and the US. In March 2011 Adam opened up HoodLab together with his wife and partner Cici, Worlds first 100% HoodLamb store, showroom and art gallery in the Santa Fe art district in Denver CO, one of the most progressive MMJ states in the US. With the new emerging MMJ market in America Adam now uses his expertise to help people in the industry with industrial growing, breeding, hash production and all other aspects belonging to cannabis production. Advancing the culture since the early 90s, Adam now also propels his own weekly live podcast called “The Adam Dunn Show”, with a cast of colorful guests and outlandish anecdotes from his 25 years trendsetting in the cannabis underground.
