Hour 1 Boomer is out today so it's Gio & Jerry this morning. They open with the Yankees losing a double header to the Astros to start the second half of the season. Once again people are starting to think the Yankees can't beat the Astros in Houston and this could be a big problem come playoff time. Jerry is filling in for Boomer today, so Peter Schwartz is in for Jerry. He starts with the Yankees losing a double header to the Astros. Aaron Boone talks about it coming down to beating them in the playoffs, not the regular season. Peter says the Yankees put a sub standard lineup out there and Jerry vehemently disagrees. There is a rumor of Ohtani to the Braves. Mekhi Becton has been put on the PUP list. Kyler Murray gets a huge deal from the Cardinals. Josh Rosen to the Browns and Jerry wonders why. In the final segment of the hour, Gio couldn't believe the outrage on Twitter when YES Network had some issues during the Yankees game. A caller went to see Everclear in Long Island and said it was funny in a bad way.  Hour 2 The 7am hour opens with Mekhi Becton being put on the Physically Unable to Perform list by the Jets. A caller says Andrew Dice Clay canceled three shows because the club sent an Escalade instead of a limo to get him. Peter returns for an update and starts with the Yankees losing a double header to the Astros. In the last segment of the hour, we talk about Dom Smith and how there is supposedly heavy interest in him by other teams. There are rumors of Ohtani to the Braves.  Hour 3 The 8am hour starts with talk of Kyler Murray's new enormous contract. Gio explains why they gave him so much money. Peter returns for another update and tells us he accidentally tipped a cab driver $30 on an $11 ride. The Yankees lost a double header to the Astros. Max Scherzer will start for the Mets tonight as they face the Padres at Citi. In the final segment of the hour, Jerry tells us that Newsday sports writer JP Pelzman passed away at the age of 57. Gio & Jerry talk about going into locker rooms to get audio for the station.   Hour 4 The 9am hour opens with the Yankees double header loss in Houston to start the second half of the season. Maureen calls in saying she heard Gio call her a Cougar the other day. Peter returns for his final update of the day and starts with the Astros sweeping the double header from the Yankees yesterday. Charles Barkley talked to the NY Post about having a meeting with LIV Golf. Jerry wonders if there have been any discussions by LIV about starting a league to compete with the NFL. While he started his career as a drummer in the 1970s, Andrew Dice Clay shifted gears in '78 and launched a career in stand-up comedy. He moved from Brooklyn to Hollywood and crafted an act that, by the late 80s, had made him the biggest name in comedy…becoming the FIRST comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden two consecutive nights!! His non-PC act raised eyebrows and courted controversy, but he always stuck to his guns…and launched an acting career that saw him starring on his own Showtime series, and winning rave reviews for his dramatic work in the 2018 movie “A Star Is Born”. And now he's rolling into KC to perform three nights at the Comedy Club of KC, so we got him on the phone to catch up with this comedy legend!!

Get ready for some Rodney Dangerfield impressions because we watched My Five Wives a Rodney comedy from 2000 featuring SNL alum Molly Shannon.  It's fine.  What more did you expect from one of the last movies starring a comedy legend?  Rodney plays a very old man who buys land in a Utah town that comes with 3 wives.  Then he gets married to 2 more ladies.  If you're counting along at home, that makes 5 wives this guy has to have sex with constantly.  Andrew Dice Clay plays a mobster (because of course this movie has a mafia subplot, every movie does) John Pinette plays a guy who gets cameras shoved up his butt.  You know what?  Don't think too much about the plot of this movie it's mostly just Rodney one-liners and half of them are decently funny.  Hear us break it down on the last episode of our second hundred.  Enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here

In the early 90's Andrew Dice Clay was an unstoppable force doing record breaking sold out shows across the country performing stand-up. He was the first comedian to sell out two consecutive nights at Madison Square Garden. At the time it seemed as if no other comedian could ever reach the heights that Dice hit. But by the mid 90's Andrew Dice Clay was starting to feel like Diceman character had "sort of gone out of hand" and wanted to use that as an opportunity to pursue more opportunities outside of stand-up. This lead to him signing a development deal with CBS that would eventually lead to his first staring roll in a sitcom called "Bless This House". Bless This House, which had him billed simply as "Andrew Clay" still allowed him to be somewhat edgy but with a more toned down approach, showing him as a working man with a wife and kids. The show was met with mixed reviews and often noted it as a modern day "Honeymooners". Sadly the show never made it out of the first season. Did Bless This House get a fair run or did it have the legs to make it past its 16 episode run? Listen as the S1E1 boys take a deep dive into its pilot episode. www.S1E1POD.com

88: Why Offensive Comedy Matters

Honest Offense

Standup comedy is under attack, figuratively and literally. In the past few months, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock were both physically assaulted on stage. And with increasing calls to silence offensive comics, more attacks are likely. But why should you, good citizen, care? Why should you stand up for a bunch of degenerates who just want to tell dirty jokes? It's because offensive comedy has a long history in America of shining light on issues that "good" people would rather just ignore. From Lenny Bruce to George Carlin to Richard Pryor to—yes—Andrew Dice Clay, offensive comics have a unique ability to get us talking about subjects that make us uncomfortable. And it's only through this openness that we're able to question premises, traditions, and biases, and decide whether change is necessary. Offensive comedy matters, and it deserves protecting. Today on the show we have legendary film producer Cary Woods. Cary Woods is a film producer best known for producing worldwide blockbusters such as Scream and Godzilla, the beloved independent films Kids, Cop Land, and Gummo, and modern classics like Rudy and Swingers.Woods is also responsible for producing the breakthrough features of such notable directors as James Mangold, Doug Liman, M. Night Shyamalan, Alexander Payne, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark, as well as the screenwriting debuts of Jon Favreau, Kevin Williamson, and Scott Rosenberg.Woods' filmography features a lineup of A-List actors, including: Robert Downey, Jr., Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, Mike Myers, Laura Dern, Heather Graham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Broderick, Courteney Cox, Timothy Hutton, Andy Garcia, Neve Campbell, Sean Astin, Michael Rapaport, Jean Reno, and Steve Buscemi.Born and raised in the Bronx, Woods graduated from the USC Gould School of Law before beginning his career at the William Morris Agency (now WME). As an agent, Woods represented - and in many cases introduced audiences to - the likes of Gus Van Sant, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Connelly, Milla Jovovich, Charlie Sheen, Matt Dillon, Todd Solondz, and most prominently, Gregory Peck.At WMA, Woods also represented many of the industry's most successful stand-up comedians including Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Gilbert Gottfried, Sandra Bernhard, Tommy Davidson, and Jackie Mason. After developing the Indie favorites Heathers and Drugstore Cowboy as an agent, Woods accepted a position at Sony Pictures Entertainment (the parent company of Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures) as a Vice President - Office of the Chairman, reporting directly to Peter Guber. Woods later segued to a production deal at Sony, resulting in the release of a succession of iconic films, including So I Married An Axe Murderer, Rudy, Only You, and Threesome. After starting his own production company - Independent Pictures - the explosive release of the 1995 cultural phenomenon Kids (starring then-newcomers Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny) began a streak of culturally significant, critically-acclaimed independent films produced by Woods under his banner. The next few years saw the releases of Citizen Ruth (the first film from future two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne), Beautiful Girls (which introduced American audiences to Natalie Portman), and Swingers (springboarding Vince Vaughn to comedy mega-stardom).His 1996 film Scream (the most successful film of "Master of Horror" Wes Craven's career) marked a turning point for the entire genre, grossing over $170 million and setting a box office record that would stand for 22 years. The film instantly and single-handedly pivoted horror toward postmodernism, spawning a massive billion-dollar franchise (consisting of successful sequels, a TV series, toys, and Halloween costumes), as well as inspiring countless knock-offs in the years since.Gummo - the directorial debut of Kids' screenwriter Harmony Korine - received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1997 Venice Film Festival. Bernando Bertolucci, the famed director of Last Tango in Paris, praised the film, calling it "The one revolutionary film of the late 20th century."In 1998, the first US-produced entry of the iconic Godzilla film franchise would become Woods' and Independent Pictures' single highest-grossing film, earning nearly $400 million.Woods would go on to serve as co-Chairman, and Chief Creative Officer of Plum TV, in which he was a founding partner. Broadcasting in the nation's most affluent markets (i.e. Aspen, the Hamptons, Miami Beach), the luxury lifestyle network would go on to earn eight Emmy Awards.Enjoy my conversation with Cary Woods.
