Friend of the Show Screen Time Kota (https://www.tiktok.com/@screentimekota) returns to discuss the 1985 sci-fi film Enemy Mine. This hidden gem of an ‘80s sci-fi film has everything you want: practical effects, elaborate sets, miniature spaceships, matte paintings, and incredible makeup. Even more impressive is the performance of Louis Gossett Jr. underneath the intricate alien makeup. He and Dennis Quaid (a human) get stranded on a planet together; their species hate each other more than anything else… but somehow, they'll need to learn to get along if they want to survive this. We return to Wolfgang Petersen's Troy: Director's Cut 20 years after its initial release and discover a film that's aged surprisingly well. Featuring an incredible cast including Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Peter O'Toole, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson, and Orlando Bloom, Troy is carried by the actors' strong performances. While not strictly true to the Iliad, Troy's daring attempt to place the Trojan War on film deserves praise, as do the incredible combat and battle sequences. While the quality is incredibly uneven and varies scene-to-scene, our hosts are willing to cope with the awful Achilles-Briseis romantic arc to enjoy the well-told stories of Hector and Priam. On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched Contact, the 1997 science-fiction drama directed by Robert Zemeckis. Based on the book by Carl Sagan, Contact stars Jodie Foster as Dr. Ellie Arroway, a SETI scientist who discovers extraterrestrial life and is eventually chosen to make first contact with the alien life. Foster is joined by a stacked cast of character actors, including Matthew McConaughey, James Woods, Tom Skerritt, William Fichtner, John Hunt, Rob Lowe and Angela Bassett. In their conversation, Jamelle and John discuss the distinctly neoliberal politics of the film as well as the extent to which Contact is a prominent example of the “end of history” utopianism that marked political and cultural life as the 1990s came to a close. You can find Contact to rent or purchase on Amazon or Apple TV.For the next episode of the podcast, Jamelle and John will watch Air Force One, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Harrison Ford as the president who punches. Mikä on Wolfgang Petersenin paras elokuva?

What if 'Troy' was recast in 1997?Strap in as Cory, Nick and Ash give us an epic of an episode, reimagining the 2004 Wolfgang Petersen epic, during an era when action icons were handing over the reins to fresh faces. We don't just speculate; we create an entire alternate universe where 'Troy' dominates the silver screen alongside that year's blockbusters. It's a rollercoaster of laughter, hypothetical casting debates, and a touch of cinematic wanderlust.Join us as we dissect Brad Pitt's portrayal of Achilles in the original 'Troy', scrutinizing his character arc with the glee of history buffs at a renaissance fair. Our discussion meanders through the intricate web of Greek mythology, silver screen adaptations, and the broader scope of Pitt's film choices. From critiquing the film's storytelling, we peel back the layers of this iconic film and contemplate the effects of a late 90s version.Wrapping up this auditory odyssey, our casting caldron bubbles over with the ideal blend of star power and thespian skill for our dream cast of 'Troy'. It is loosely based[3] on Homer's Iliad in its narration of the entire story of the decade-long Trojan War—condensed into little more than a couple of weeks, rather than just the quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon in the ninth year. Achilles leads his Myrmidons along with the rest of the Greek army invading the historical city of Troy, defended by Hector's Trojan army. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! This week on Catching Up On Cinema, Kyle and Trevor review Wolfgang Petersen's, Enemy Mine (1985)! An over-budgeted box office flop with a checkered production history, Enemy Mine (1985) is a charming, if uneven, sci-fi fable. On the subject of “checkered production history,” the story goes that director Wolfgang Petersen was courted to take the helm of Enemy Mine over 5 weeks into the films' production, after original director Richard Loncraine apparently failed to meet the producer's expectations. After director Petersen paused and rewound production to begin anew and remake the film from whole cloth, the production budget of Enemy Mine would essentially double. To make matter worse, the film failed to generate interest at the box office, and Enemy Mine would go on to be regarded as a financial failure. Despite failing to find an audience during its theatrical run, Enemy Mine has since gone on to become somewhat of a cult classic, largely on the strength of its handsome production design, and winning performances from both Louis Gossett Jr. and Dennis Quaid. We watched the 1997 film from Wolfgang Petersen, Air Force One.I know that nothing can ever be 100% secure and safe. That's just not the world we live in. I'd like it to be, but there are certain trade-offs we all need to make if we want to be active participants in life. That being said… You'd think that the vetting process for who's allowed to work for the President of the United States and who's allowed on their plane would be completely airtight. In other words, how in the world could the president's plane—ideally, the most secure vehicle in the world—be hijacked by ruthless terrorists?Watching this film, it occurred to me that the security process for getting onto a commercial airline flight during the last couple of decades has been more stringent than what was shown in this film. But, as always, the terrorists didn't count on the unstoppable force that would spell their certain doom: Harrison Freaking Ford.(Recorded on July 10, 2023)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Air Force One - The Movie Database (TMDB)Wolfgang Petersen — The Movie Database (TMDB)Harrison Ford — The Movie Database (TMDB)Gary Oldman — The Movie Database (TMDB)Man of Steel (2013) — The Movie Database (TMDB)United States presidential line of succession - WikipediaBattlestar Galactica (TV Series 2004–2009) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Designated Survivor (TV Series 2016–2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Die Hard | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutGlenn Close — The Movie Database (TMDB)Trolley problem - WikipediaThe Good Place (TV Series 2016–2020) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Indiana Jones Collection — The Movie Database (TMDB)Batman (TV Series 1966–1968) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Leon: The Professional | More Movies Please! - BuzzsproutThe Postman (1997) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Randy Newman — The Movie Database (TMDB)Toy Story 3 (2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Jerry Goldsmith — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Instagram profile!Support the show
