Diesen Trend gibt es schon seit vielen Jahren, ist auf den ersten Zug doch eigentlich nur heiße Luft, aber alles andere als ungefährlich. In unserer heutigen Folge sprechen wir über Lachgas. Eine viel zu lange tolerierte Droge, an jedem Kiosk freiverkäuflich und vor allem für Kinder und Jugendlich leicht zugänglich. Gerade in der Altersgruppe zwischen 15-18 Jahren hat sich der Konsum in den letzten 20 Jahren mehr als verdreifacht. Jeder 6. hat zumindest schon einmal Lachgas ausprobiert. Nach einem schweren Autounfall 2025 in Frankfurt plädieren viele für verschärfte Abgabegesetze. Police are seeing more incidents involving drivers who've been huffing nitrous oxide or nangs, that can cause black outs and dizziness. They say the risks are "clear and grave". It is illegal to sell nitrous oxide for huffing, but a Checkpoint investigation's found stores are selling large cannisters of the gas that contain hundreds of hits, with virtually no questions asked. Now police are planning to target retailers. Assistant Commissioner of Road policing, Tusha Penny spoke to Lisa Owen.

The mother of a man who still has nerve damage more than a year after being hospitalised for huffing nitrous oxide and is unable to work in construction anymore is calling for tougher regulation around so called nangs. A mother, who doesn't want to be named, said her son was buying large quantities of Nitrous Oxide and thought he could manage his doses, but things got serious when he started losing his balance. Empty cannisters of nitrous oxide or 'nangs' discarded by Auckland motorway on and off ramps is concerning one south Auckland councillor, who suspects people are huffing and driving. There's growing calls for tighter regulation around Nitrous Oxide, a colourless gas, which is used as a painkiller in medical and dental procedures and also in catering to whip cream. But when inhaled for recreational use, it can have dangerous long-term side effects like nerve damage in the brain and spinal cord. Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councillor Matt Winiata spoke to Lisa Owen.

It follows last week's warnings from senior medical staff at Beaumont Hospital who say they are seeing spinal cord damage in young people as a result of nitrous oxide abuse. Sinn Féin TD Mark Ward joined Rachel.

Dr. Dawn explains the drug blocks tumor necrosis factor, which stops autoimmune attacks but also weakens infection defense—increasing risk of fungal infections, tuberculosis, and after about 10 years, slightly elevated blood cancer risk. She recommends the daughter practice good hygiene and mask in high-risk settings. For achieving full remission, she suggests vitamin D levels around 75-80, DHEA supplementation, strict gluten avoidance due to its pro-inflammatory effects, and working with a certified functional medicine practitioner to heal the gut and potentially withdraw medication. Dr. Dawn presents a case study of a 27-year-old woman with progressive weakness, pins-and-needles sensations, and impaired balance. Despite normal B12 blood levels, elevated homocysteine and methylmalonic acid revealed functional B12 deficiency from using 20-30 nitrous oxide whippets daily. Nitrous oxide oxidizes the cobalt atom in methylcobalamin, permanently inactivating the enzyme needed for myelin sheath maintenance. Treatment requires months of daily B12 injections with recovery taking up to 84 weeks. She warns that nitrous oxide also interacts dangerously with Viagra-type drugs (causing dangerous blood pressure drops), methotrexate, stimulants, hallucinogens, and respiratory depressants. She describes Canadian researchers developing a miniaturized 3D printer for vocal cord repair. After removing nodules that cause hoarseness, the device prints hydrogel along the wound to create a flat surface preventing keloid-like regrowth, rather like spackling a wall before healing occurs underneath. Dr. Dawn discusses lipoprotein(a), written as Lap(a), a genetic cardiovascular risk factor discovered in the 1960s. This relative of LDL carries a protein that promotes blood clots, thus raising heart attack and stroke risks. In a recent large survey, only about 14% of people have been screened despite its significance. New drugs like pelicarsin can reduce Lp(a) levels up to 80%,trials underway to confirm a benefit of reduced cardiac events. She notes tennis star Arthur Ashe had high Lp(a) contributing to his coagulopathy. A natural option is already available. She recommends lumbrokinase, derived from earthworms and used in traditional Chinese medicine, as an existing treatment that combats high Lp(a) and counteracts its procoagulant effects. The product Boluoke is commercially available, offering an alternative to high-dose niacin which causes intolerable flushing and diarrhea. Dr. Dawn reports research finding people with anxiety disorders have 8% lower choline levels in brain regions regulating emotion. Increasing choline could help. Choline sources include eggs (two eggs provide 300mg of the 500mg daily choline need), organ meats, salmon, soybeans, and lecithin supplements.

A new study has revealed that young people in Ireland are increasingly being diagnosed with spinal cord damage from receational use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. The study was led by consultant Neuro - radiologist Professor Seamus Looby of the RCSI and Beaumont Hospital.

A new report shows that Doctors at Tallaght University Hospital diagnosed 18 young people with a neurological disorder caused by inhaling nitrous oxide or “laughing gas”. Women of Strength, you won't want to miss this one!!In today's episode of The VBAC Link Podcast, we welcome Sarah, a mom of three boys, an active duty Air Force officer (AND a spouse to one as well!) about her incredible VBA2C during an overseas PCS move from South Korea to Florida. Sarah's first birth was a c-section for breech presentation. Her second was a scheduled c-section timed around her husband's deployment. Her third pregnancy brought navigating prenatal care in a foreign country, a huge move with two toddlers in tow, and the stress of finding a completely new birth team. After Sarah's water broke unexpectedly at 37 weeks while visiting family in Kentucky, and with all their belongings either in Arizona or on a boat in the Pacific, she was induced so she could labor while a VBAC-supportive doctor was on call. After 11 hours on Pitocin, she delivered her baby vaginally, finished the move and arrived in Florida when her newborn was just one week old. Sarah & Meagan also share tips about using nitrous oxide in labor and important Tricare resources for military families. Though there were wild twists and turns, Sarah got her especially redemptive moment of being fully present for the moment she introduced her new baby to her other boys. They interview Peter Nagele, professor of anesthesiology at the University of Chicago, about his groundbreaking trial on the use of nitrous oxide as a treatment for severe depression.
