Exploring Mystical Union and Spiritual Embodiment in Jewish Mysticism with Professor Adam Afterman. Adam Afterman is a Research Fellow of the Kogod Research Center at the Shalom Hartman Institute and the chair of the Department of Jewish Philosophy and Talmud at Tel Aviv University. Professor Afterman's main fields of research are medieval Jewish philosophy, kabbalah, and Jewish mysticism. His most recent book, And They Shall Be One Flesh: On the Language of Mystical Union in Judaism (Brill, 2016), offers an extensive study of mystical union and spiritual embodiment in Judaism. Professor Afterman studies Jewish thought in its broader Muslim and Christian contexts and explores how medieval Judaism was transformed in detailed response to philosophy and Muslim and Christian high culture. Join us for a profoundly heartful conversation on the musical and textual life of Jewish mysticism with Melila Hellner-Eshed. Melila Hellner-Eshed, Ph.D., is a Research Fellow of the Kogod Research Center at Shalom Hartman Institute and the Director of Maskilot, an intensive two-year program for female doctoral candidates, now opening its fourth cohort. She also founded and co-directs the Rabbinical Students Seminar, a interdenominational program for rabbinic students spending a year in Israel. She has been a professor of Jewish mysticism and Zohar in the Department of Jewish Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem for over two decades. She received her degree from Hebrew University under the tutelage of Professor Yehuda Liebes. At the Hebrew University, Melila also taught in the honors teacher-training program Revivim and in the Amirim honors program for liberal studies. For the past three decades, she has been a central figure in the Israeli renaissance of study of Jewish texts by Israeli adults of all paths of life in various frameworks. She has been teaching and working with Jewish communities in North America, Europe and the former Soviet Union for many years. Her publications include A River Flows from Eden: The Language of Mystical Experience in the Zohar, (Hebrew, Alma and Am Oved Publications, 2005 and English, Stanford University Press, 2009). Her book Seekers of the Face  – From the Secrets of the Idra Rabba in the Zohar was published in Hebrew in 2018, forthcoming in English from Stanford University Press. Melila also serves on the faculty of the Institute of Jewish Spirituality in the U.S. and is active in the ‘Sulha' – a reconciliation project that brings together Israelis and Palestinians. Asking, is there such a thing as “Jewish meditation”? What might it be? And how might we go about doing it? Dr. Tomer Persico is a Research Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute. He was the Koret Visiting Assistant Professor of Jewish and Israel Studies at U.C. Berkeley, where he was also a Senior Research Scholar in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies. Dr. Persico is a social activist advocating for freedom of religion in Israel. A leading thinker about secularization, Jewish Renewal and forms of contemporary spirituality, Persico writes the most popular blog in Hebrew on these subjects and has published articles in the Washington Post and Haaretz (English) as well as numerous other Israeli newspapers and periodicals. He is a Research Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, and formerly taught in the department of Comparative Religion at Tel Aviv University. A powerful examination of the experiences of people who are living with HIV in Ireland today, How to Tell A Secret is a hybrid documentary film that looks at social stigma and the art of telling your story. Robbie Lawlor was diagnosed with HIV at 21 and became one of the youngest people to come out on Irish television. Enda McGrattan, also known as Veda, promised to keep their HIV status a secret for a decade but eventually broke free by releasing a song. And a group of Irish and migrant women, who cannot show their faces, found creative ways to have their voices heard… In this compelling film, directors Anna Rodgers and Shaun Dunne use documentary, performance and genre-blurring storytelling techniques to communicate a powerful message. The stories in this film move between bodies of young men, migrant women, drag artists and activists. Featuring a cast of actors as well as ordinary people coming out on screen for the first time, the film also includes a dramatic tribute to Thom McGinty, aka The Diceman with a reenactment of his historic appearance on The Late Late Show in the 1990s. Based on a theatre show, director Anna Rodgers saw a performance of ‘Rapids'by Shaun Dunne, and approached him to work together on an artistic collaboration for the screen. Together they expanded on the world of the original play by working with new contributors and a stellar cast of Irish actors including Lauren Larkin, Jade Jordan, and Eva Jane Gaffney who take on the hidden stories of women who are living with HIV. In the early 90's Andrew Dice Clay was an unstoppable force doing record breaking sold out shows across the country performing stand-up. He was the first comedian to sell out two consecutive nights at Madison Square Garden. At the time it seemed as if no other comedian could ever reach the heights that Dice hit. But by the mid 90's Andrew Dice Clay was starting to feel like Diceman character had "sort of gone out of hand" and wanted to use that as an opportunity to pursue more opportunities outside of stand-up. This lead to him signing a development deal with CBS that would eventually lead to his first staring roll in a sitcom called "Bless This House". Bless This House, which had him billed simply as "Andrew Clay" still allowed him to be somewhat edgy but with a more toned down approach, showing him as a working man with a wife and kids. The show was met with mixed reviews and often noted it as a modern day "Honeymooners". Sadly the show never made it out of the first season. Looking for a book full of truth that is actually full of shameless lies? 'Cat's Cradle' by Kurt Vonnegut is a satirical novel of black humour that treats of a dangerous situation similar to the Cold War. It follows the writer John as he researches Felix Hoenikker; one of the fathers of the atomic bomb & the inventor of the insanely dangerous Ice-Nine. Along his journey he meets an enigmatic midget, the most beautiful girl in the world and the mysterious Bokonon. The underlying themes of the book centre around the possibility of Armageddon due to rampant technological increase and the absurd religion designed to give purpose and meaning.I summarised the book as follows. "It's a fun easy read that will have you laughing. Totally ridiculous with biting dark humour on actually serious issues. Some of the finest satire I have read. The book has a unique style of extremely short chapters, there being 127 in only 206 pages.
