Rick Ward, CTO, and Founder of Orbits Edge, described how space is becoming increasingly accessible to laypeople. “We're getting more and more to the place where I can see myself there. And that is a big deal. You don't have a space-bearing civilization when the only people who go up there are less numerous than Olympic gold medalists.”  Ward and Raymond Hawkins, Chief Revenue Officer of Compass Data Centers, discussed this increasing accessibility in the context of data on Part Two of “Data Centers in Space” on Not Your Father's Data Center Podcast.    Orbits Edge uses high-power compute in space before sending data to Earth. Mass amounts of data are captured, but there is a bottleneck in the transportation. Ward said, “Image capture is haystack generation, compute is needle finding,” said Ward. If you can only transport a fraction of the data haystack, it needs to be the high-quality “needles.”   Data is shipped to countries through bands that have varying reliabilities and throughputs. A low-orbit satellite may conduct with a ground station for a certain distance, then have a fuzzy connection for another distance, and finally have no connectivity for several kilometers until it reaches the next ground station. High, dry locations are best for ground station connectivity. “What it comes down to is intermittent connectivity of variable throughputs of various windows of connectivity,” said Ward.  Data is then transported from the ground station to a data center. Some ground stations have antennas to reduce the fiber run distance.   Orbits Edge satellites range from the size of a dorm mini-fridge to the size of a regular fridge and weigh about 200 kilos. Despite the small size, Ward predicted that satellite data will play an increasingly heavy role in space and research stations, crystallography, space metallurgy, and ceramics.

Rick Ward is the founder of OrbitsEdge, a space industry firm focused on edge computing. Has the time come for the adoption of edge computing in space? Cold Star Project host Jason Kanigan asks Rick: Lay out the case for edge computing in the context of the space industry...We're about to generate more data and put more strain on the Deep Space Network...how do we handle it? What technology is needed? Do we have this tech today? How will the Cislunar economy impact this data pipeline requirement? What timeline could we be looking at for this? We've doubled the population of satellites over the past two years (Starlink)...may double again over next two and continue to, applying ongoing pressure. Are there any plans to respond to these requirements? What kind of anecdotal evidence can you provide that you're seeing people recognizing themselves that there's an impending data problem? The modern world is driven by data and our ability to analyze it, and the final frontier – space – provides an overwhelming amount of data just waiting to help us understand and commercialize what lies beyond our planet. However, the current infrastructure needs a boost to help us get there. At OrbitsEdge, CTO and Co-founder Rick Ward and the rest of the team think they've identified the missing link. Just as edge network solutions are empowering robust connectivity and data capture on earth, the company believes it could do the same in space.

Edge computing brings computation and data storage closer to the location where it is needed, to improve response times and save bandwidth. Satellites create an enormous amount of data which needs to be transmitted to Earth. Our guest on this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast has founded a company which looks to solve the problems inherent is that transaction. Rick Ward, the founder of Space Edge Computing company OrbitsEdge. The company intends to deliver high-performance computing datacenters in orbit, above the clouds, which can process and analyze the vast amounts of data being created in space. The OrbitsEdge core mission is to provide an in-orbit virtualized data infrastructure at the edge of space that's agile and adapts to new demands turning data into actionable insights. The OrbitsEdge cornerstone infrastructure solution will substantially increase computing power in space and reduce the bottlenecks of analyzing space data on Earth, according to Ward. To keep up with the rate of change and the number of satellites being launched into Low Earth Orbit, new services have to be made available. Shipping data back to terrestrial clouds is impractical, however today it is the only choice. Placing industry standard high performance Edge technology at the edge of space can help us keep up with the rate of change. Ward says their advantage is the delivery of resources where needed for space-based IoT. OrbitsEdge will provide a faster, more competitive option for processing data. NASA selected OrbitsEdge to participate as finalists in the 2020 NASA iTech Cycle II forum. The NASA iTech initiative seeks trailblazing technologies that could enhance NASA's missions while also improving life on Earth. This current cycle specifically called for innovative technologies in the areas of power generation and energy, integrated photonics, advanced engineered materials, and miniaturized systems. NASA also left open a category for “X-factor innovations,” technologies and concepts that may not fit the other prescribed categories but still sparked the agency's curiosity.

It’s worthwhile to work and train like one. Never underestimate the value of what you learn as a salesperson: cold-calling and face-to-face sales are both a fundamental component of lending. Just like in any other sales, people need to know, like, and trust you to do business with you. Never stop prospecting (09:01- 10:19)Every day of the week, you have to make sure people know who you are and that you’re available for business. By breaking this habit once, you’re more likely to procrastinate and put it off. Just get it done today. Why you need to stay hungry (12:55- 14:15)It’s easy to lose your hunger for success when you’ve tasted a lot of it. However, just because you’ve reached some of your goals does not mean you’re done. Stay hungry and actually tell your clients that you’re open and ready for their business. It can be easy to lose your motivation over time, but you can help yourself keep momentum by shifting your goalposts and challenging yourself in new ways. Keep setting your bar higher and aim to surpass the goals you once set. You may reach the point where you no longer need to work, but if you stay hungry, you may decide you want to keep pushing.   Guest Bio- Rick Ward is a well-established branch manager at Benchmark Mortgage in Colorado Springs.
