This rap session is a treat for serious funk fans and curious music lovers alike, featuring two of the foremost authorities and advocates. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Episode 115. Join host Troy Saunders as he chats with writer, producer, multi instrumentalist, pianist, Jesse Thompson!Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, known in music circles as the land of funk, Jesse Thompson couldn't help but be influenced by the city's great R&B pioneers – including Slave, Ohio Players, Lakeside and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. For the past 20 years, the multi-talented composer, pianist and keyboardist manifested these inspirations – and helped bring the legacies of these legendary bands forward – as a former member of the popular and prolific, constantly gigging Columbus-based R&B/jazz ensemble NexLevel.Unlike many longtime band members and sidemen who work towards someday expressing themselves as solo artists, Thompson was content with his existing whirlwind of activity playing with others. But when the pandemic hit, he instinctively used his down time to, as he says, “sow a seed of happiness” to create “Weekend Groove” – an irrepressible Next-Gen disco vibin' house beat driven track featuring flutist Althea Rene and a horn section by Kelly O'Donohue that ultimately became the lead single to his uniquely titled debut album The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys). Though its dance floor ready lead single “Weekend Groove” will immediately spark excitement and lift the spirits just as Jesse Thompson intended, there are a multitude of other pleasures to experience on The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys) – an album which truly rolls like an autobiographical blend of his many influences, from those Dayton funk legends to George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample and Brian Culbertson. The album's latest single “It Doesn't Matter” is a sensual, easy grooving romantic joint featuring Thompson interacting with #1 Billboard charting trumpeter Lin Rountree – who he connected with via mutual connections at the individual HBCU schools they attended. As a showcase for Thompson's great talents on Fender Rhodes (creating a moody effect and his sparkling acoustic piano, the song taps into Thompson's love of Joe Sample's vibe both with the Crusaders and as a solo artist. The elegant funk ballad “The Right One Baby” offers a similar seductive duality. Troy highlighted three song from this incredible project "Weekend Grove", Obsidian, and "It Doesn't Matter".Being the son of a father who was a professional jazz drummer and a mother who was a church organist/pianist, Jesse Thompson – aka “JTJazz” came by his musical gifts naturally and started playing the drums as his first instrument at the age of five. By the time JT was twelve years old, he played a total of thirteen instruments, the piano being one of them. In addition to his parents, he was influenced by his oldest brother Marvyn Wheatley, who recorded and played with Parliament and Slave. Thompson spent time with his brothers in the studio hanging out with Slave, Roger Troutman & Zapp, Steve Arrington and othersThese experiences truly fueled his musical passions and ambitions. While he studied manufacturing engineering and IT at Central State University (in Wilberforce, OH), he played in the school's marching band and jazz ensemble and joined the national honorary band of the Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity. His other influences include Alex Bugnon, Jimmy Smith, Billy Preston, Jeff Lorber, James Lloyd and Bob James.Troy and Jesse discusses Jesse's musical bucket list, future endeavors giving back and more.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. In which The Curmudgeons celebrate the music and indelible legacy of one of the 21st Century's smartest, most vital rock bands. When The Black Keys first hit in 2002, comparisons with The White Stripes were inevitable. After all, they were a duo that blasted forth with just a guitar and drums. But that's where the fair comparisons ended. The Black Keys offered up lean, mean, reverent blues rock with dashes of soul and psychedelia. After self-recording their first four albums--and mostly doing so in basements--the band graduated to the majors with the help of storied hip-hop producer Danger Mouse, instantly growing as an incredibly sensual musical force. We explore the band's entire catalog, including their brand-new record, Ohio Players. The 2024 Tony Awards were certainly a night to remember, celebrating a very full Broadway season filled with remarkable performances and groundbreaking productions. Yet amidst the accolades and celebrations, some highly anticipated shows were left without a single nomination. One of these was The Wiz, a revival production directed by the wonderful Schele Williams. But despite the lack of Tony recognition, Williams' work on The Wiz has made its mark on Broadway this year with near capacity crowds at every performance and averaging more than $1.4 million dollars each week since it opened back in April. But Schele wasn't content with just one Broadway show this season, she was also part of the directing team for The Notebook musical. However, her illustrious career actually began as an actress, performing in iconic Broadway productions such as Rent and Aida, and eventually transitioned to directing. Her journey from celebrated performer to visionary director has been marked by perseverance and a commitment to amplifying diverse voices. As the first Black woman to direct a musical on Broadway in more than 40 years, she hopes her work this year will inspire kids of all backgrounds to follow their dreams. Here are her three stories: Schele shares her journey from being a child prodigy drummer to choosing a path in musical theater (Her father is famed drummer James "Diamond" Williams of the Ohio Players). We delve into her memories of seeing The Wiz as a child and the profound effect it has had on her, ultimately leading to her directing its first Broadway revival. We discuss the personal trials she faced as her mother struggles with Alzheimer's and how it influenced her decision to co-direct The Notebook with her longtime friend and collaborator Michael Greif. So listen as we explore the remarkable career of Schele Williams and the stories that shaped her path in the world of theater. ---------- Subscribe to get early and ad-free access to the full conversation with each guest, which includes the auditions stories that are only available to subscribers. Acclaimed international jazz artist Jose James has a composure about him that one might compare to James Bond. The Minneapolis native claims he was one of the least talented artists in his music circles growing up, yet he ultimately attended The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. His first album, The Dreamer, debuted in 2008. Since then, he's gone on to play at the Kennedy Center, The Hollywood Bowl, Ancienne Belgique, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Melbourne Symphony and has recorded 11 more records including his latest which dropped April 5—the stunning album 1978, named for the year of his birth. Along the way, he's picked up honor after honor in establishing himself as an extraordinary jazz singer/songwriter—but one built for the hip-hop generation. Pitchfork called him, “one of the suavest vocal improvisers on the scene,” and it's been said his arrangements and approach are “in deep conversation with funk, R&B, and hip-hop.” Despite oozing cool, he's not really all about himself. You quickly understand that James lives for the collaboration and building art that he loves with others. “I really grew up with this idea that you make music with a band, with other people,” he told me recently on The Load Out Music Podcast. He grew up feeling the diverse vibes of bands ranging from the Ohio Players and Peter, Paul and Mary found in his mother's record collection; the funky global beats of his multi-instrumentalist father's band, Ipso Facto; the western church music of his Catholic school and diverse artists such as Nirvana, 10,000 Maniacs, De la Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Grammy-winner Bobby McFerrin who was the creative chair of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra for a time in the early 1990s. When he was 17, James attended a McFerrin concert with the noted jazz pianist Chick Corea. It was then that he was hooked on the idea that a career in music was inevitable—but he still was surprised that others saw it as well. “Wow,” James said. “People see something in me that I might not see. I didn't really go to college. I didn't want to do the traditional route. I was like, I can have a coffee shop job and pay my rent and see what happens. This is where my spirit is taking me.” Despite a love for jazz, early on James understood that jazz could be limiting and wanted to explore the boundaries of the genre. “There is a strong jazz radio, but it's pretty strict about what they play,” he said, noting that listeners essentially find smooth or classic jazz on radio, but the parameters are narrow. Thus, he approaches each record with the understanding that he must keep certain singles within the ditches, producing them to be radio friendly, while stretching boundaries on other tracks with dance, pop and hip-hop beats. “I think it's more frustrating that jazz, in general, is not more popular in America,” he muses, despite his voice not elevating to indicate any semblance of anger. “You go to Tokyo, go to any shopping mall, restaurant, they are playing jazz.” As James' star has risen, he's realized two principal realities about his chosen career: That money and power still drive the industry and that he would be little without the graciousness of other artists. “It's not just about talent, James said. “It's about who's pushing you and how much money.” This became apparent to him when he released a single independently in 2012 to little fanfare. However, the same single was included on his first album for the vaunted Blue Note label and it became a sensational hit, landing him appearances on David Letterman's and Conan O'Brien's late-night shows. James credits his success to mentors who have given him their time including legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner (who worked with John Coltrane), singer Anita Baker, composer Christian McBride, band leader Chico Hamilton and even former late-night host Jay Leno. “There's so much generosity going around,” he said. “You have to take the wins.” As for 1978, James said that it is, “The first time I've really gotten personal in a concrete way. I'm going to reveal more about myself and where I'm from.” He points to the racial politics of Minnesota and efforts to bring to bear a range of influences including Prince, Michael Jackson and even Bob Dylan. “I call it party and politics because, to me, that's what the 70s kind of resonates with. People knew how to party. They could throw down. But they were also famous for taking a stand.” Thus, the first half of the album is what he calls “party,” while the second half focuses on “politics,” including pieces written in the memories of George Floyd and Trayvon Martin. “I don't really worry about it,” James said of injecting politics into his art. “I've definitely gotten some of that—the shut up and sing kind of vibe. If it's important to you, I think you've got to talk about it. If people don't like it, that's kind of fine.” It's important to Jose James indeed. Enjoy a tremendous episode of The Load Out Music Podcast with the acclaimed jazz maestro.

Joining the group at the outset of their Westbound Records emergence and remaining a core member during the rise to superstardom on Mercury records that began with 1974's sizzling-hot Skin Tight album, he stayed on through the early 1980s. That period included classic tracks like “Jive Turkey,” “Heaven Must Be Like This,” “Fire,” “I Want to Be Free,” “Fopp,” “Love Rollercoaster,” “Sweet Sticky Thing,” “Who'd She Coo?” “Far East Mississippi” and “Body Vibes.” Pierce then left music behind to become a successful businessman specializing in technology for the golfing industry. Featured in TIR Episode 328 (Part 1 of 2): Trumpet and trombone player Marvin Pierce, who helped hold down the powerful horn section for one of the baddest funk & soul bands of all time -- the magnificent Ohio Players! In 2010, he co-founded Melbourne, Australia-based GPS Golf Solutions. Here he covers the Ohio Players' entire history, from rise to fall and everything in between. It's not an understatement to suggest that the Ohio Players are one of the greatest bands of all time. They are an American national treasure, a band that truly broke the mold and changed the face of music forever. The Players produced 17 Top 40 hits, 3 Platinum and 5 Gold albums, including masterpiece songs such as 'Skin Tight', 'Fire', 'Love Rollercoaster' and 'Who'd She Coo? The Ohio Players' sound has been ingrained into modern popular culture. Their music has been used everywhere, from McDonald's commercials to The Sopranos. In 2004 the Players were given a prestigious BMI Award for the use of the song 'Fire' on the TV show Hell's Kitchen. The Players also paved the way for the next generation of funkateers. Samples of their music has enhanced the careers of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Ice-T, Beastie Boys, and Jay-Z and a great many others. Their songs have also been covered by a vast array of artists including Red Hot Chili Peppers. After 50 years in the business this group is still setting stages on “Fire” and riding their own “Love Rollercoaster”. Let's welcome, original member and drummer of the Ohio Players, the legendary James “Diamond” Williams to the show! . #funkmusic #funk #music #musicallegacy #drummer #popmusic #rockmusic #rockandrollhalloffame #brunomars #nilerodgers #arethafranklin #eltonjohn #ohioplayers
