En 1909 vio la luz uno de los grandes mitos del terror del siglo XX. Fue cuando Gaston Leroux empezó a publicar por entregas su novela «El fantasma de la ópera». El escritor imaginó bajo la icónica Opera Garnier de París un mundo subterráneo dominado por la figura enmascarada de Erik, a la vez un genio del mal y un personaje digno de la mayor compasión. Carl Laemle, dueño de la Universal, no tardó en ver el potencial de la obra y compró sus derechos para rodar su primera adaptación. Así, para regocijo de Leroux, «El fantasma de la ópera» tomó forma cinematográfica en 1925 dirigida por Rupert Julian y protagonizada por el inolvidable Lon Chaney. Doce años después, el director Weibang Ma-xu reimaginó la historia en «Canción de medianoche» (1937), pionera del cine de terror chino. Fueron dos de las primeras versiones en la gran pantalla de una historia que no ha dejado de inspirar a cineastas de todas las épocas y geografías. Composer and conductor Carl Davis gives insight into his score for Rupert Julian's 1925 silent film, The Phantom of the Opera. The Philharmonia Orchestra presents a screening of the film with live orchestral accompaniment on Sun 27 March at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall.
