Join the hosts of The it Doesn't Matter Podcast as we break down WCW Bash at the Beach 1998, analyzing everything from the opening Raven vs. Saturn match to the significant Eddie Guerrero-Chavo Guerrero hair vs. hair bout and the classic Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio Cruiserweight title showdown. They explore the broader impact of cruiserweight wrestling and the high-profile celebrity involvement of the nWo, including The Giant's special attraction match with Kevin Greene. The episode also critiques Bret Hart's match against Booker T, particularly its disappointing conclusion. Furthermore, the discussion expands to cover the nuances of wrestling commentary, Michael Cole's career trajectory, Goldberg's swift victory over Mr. Perfect, and the inherent chaos that defined WCW. The conversation concludes with a preview of the chaotic Bash at the Beach 2000, reflecting the hosts' mixed feelings about the event's legacy."Chapters00:00 Introduction to Bash at the Beach 199802:51 Opening Matches and Commentary Highlights06:01 Raven vs. Perry Saturn: A Clunky Start09:00 Eddie Guerrero's Hair vs. Hair Match12:05 Chavo Guerrero's Antics and Eddie's Frustration14:57 The Comedy of Chavo vs. Stevie Ray17:49 Chavo vs. Eddie: The Family Feud21:00 The Impact of Chavo's Character Development24:00 Suspended Malenko and Disco Inferno's Match26:54 Celebrity Matches and Special Attractions30:00 The Giant's Role in WCW32:56 Curt Henning's Strategy Against Goldberg36:00 Rey Mysterio's Return and Cruiserweight Action39:47 Bret Hart vs. Booker T: A Clash of Titans43:18 Overexposure in Wrestling Commentary49:21 The Impact of Celebrity Matches55:38 Goldberg's Dominance in the Ring01:00:39 Celebrity Involvement in Wrestling01:02:14 The Legacy of Celebrity Wrestlers01:02:19 Main Event Match Analysis01:08:41 Reflections on Bash at the Beach 199801:09:42 Does This Show Matter?01:10:35 Previewing Bash at the Beach 2000
In the late 70s, disco was everywhere. Songs like “Disco Inferno,” “I Will Survive” and “Brick House” topped the charts. Disco had been created and embraced by Black people, Latino people, LGBT+ people, and women. It was fun and funky. It was freeing and empowering. …but *some* folks didn't like having disco balls shoved in their faces. So, when a 24-year-old Chicago shock jock began hosting “death to disco” rallies at local bars, he developed a loyal following of young, disgruntled dudes. The shock jock's popularity soon caught the eye of the Chicago White Sox. They needed to sell tickets for an upcoming doubleheader. What if they ran a “Disco Demolition Night” promotion? It would be totally fun! Things definitely wouldn't get out of hand! Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For this episode, Kristin pulled from: The documentary, “The Saint of Second Chances” The documentary, “The War on Disco” “When ‘Disco Sucks!' echoed around the world,” by Tony Scalafani for Today.com “Disco demolition: Bell-bottoms be gone!” by Andy Behrens for ESPNChicago.com “We rock ‘n' rollers will resist – and we will triumph!” by Kirstin Butler for PBS.org “Forty years later, disagreement about disco demolition night,” by Gary Waleik for WBUR.org “Baseball's showman,” by Nick Acocella for ESPN.com Are you enjoying An Old Timey Podcast? In this episode, Tim and Jeremy complete our mini-series on Saturday Night Fever by looking at the film in its cinematographic context alongside two other huge movies of the late1970s. With reference to Rocky and Taxi Driver, the guys unearth the shared visions of class and race politics in the USA of the period. They discuss the particular place of Italian Americans in the culture more broadly, discuss particular forms of American-ness, and spend some time on the real life events that inspired the character of Rocky Balboa. After that, attention returns to Travlota to wrap up SNF with a look at how the film was received at the time and since, and reflect on how their own attitudes to the movie have changed down the years. Plus the Trammps, Jem's Grandma, and the answer to the question of whether David Mancuso ever saw Tony Manero up on the big screen…Produced by Matt Huxley. We are now on Youtube! They always do so enthusiastically, understanding what it feels like to wear something a loved one has made.

This week, Down to Watch has got that Night Fever and the only cure is a Disco Inferno! Dan and Raul finally saw Saturday Night Fever, the film that reinvigorated the Bee Gees careers and launched John Travolta as a movie star, but how could they know it was gonna be a gripping social issues indie film? The driving soundtrack and magnetic lead performance buoy what might otherwise be an overdramatic morality tale, but did SNF dance it's way into the history books legitimately? You should be listenin', yeah!
