Summer's not over yet, and neither is Hollywood's addiction to remakes and requels! Case in point: The Naked Gun!Akiva Schaffer's legacy sequel picks up decades after 1988's The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, and centers on Frank Drebin, Jr. (Liam Neeson), who wants nothing more than to live up to the legacy of his bumbling-hero father (Leslie Nielsen). When a bank heist connects to a murder, Frank Jr. finds himself in the midst of a wild techno conspiracy--and a whole lot of cartoon nonsense in the background! There's been a lot of controversy surrounding original Naked Gun co-writer/director David Zucker's lack of involvement in the new movie, but Earth's Mightiest Critics feel the new creative team has done their best to uphold the franchise's zany spirit.Does this mean that comedy is "back"? Is this finally the return of the theatrical comedy? The Naked Gun reboot has finally hit theaters, after years of rumors and development. But this time, it's led by one Liam Neeson. I only watched the original movies, starring another actor with LN initials, for the first time a few weeks back and surprisingly, mildly enjoyed them. I have been interested in this reboot for a while though because I generally really find Neeson's ultra serious persona naturally funny and because I miss all-out comedies on the big screen. So, does The Naked Gun recapture the magic of the originals and will it spark the return of comedies on the big screen? Cage Fighting: Answering the Big Questions in Film

In this episode, we slip on our oversized sunglasses and dive into the new release The Naked Gun—yes, it's back, and yes, it's still gloriously ridiculous. Then it's part one of our deep dive into the minds behind the madness: director David Zucker and the legendary ZAZ team. From Airplane! to the Naked Gun trilogy, we explore how they reshaped comedy with slapstick, satire, and a barrage of gags-per-minute. Finally, we pivot from spoof to squeak with a look at Nicolas Cage's performance in G-Force, the only film where he voices a mole and still somehow channels existential angst.Socials: @CageFightingPodUse my special link (cagefighting) to save 30% off your first month of any Zencastr paid plan.

The behind the scenes stories of two movies, starting with Naked Gun 33 1/3, a movie that saw franchise director David Zucker opt to step back, and thirtysomething Peter Segal make his directorial debut. The problem? There was a comedy to make, and Segal was struggling to get a connection with his leading man, the late Leslie Nielsen. 2000's Cast Away meanwhile would be a movie that contributed to health problems Tom Hanks has put up with since. It made a volleyball famous, and notably, it's a film that took so long to make, that director Robert Zemeckis shot and released another movie entirely in the midst of Cast Away's production schedule. (1988), directed by comedy legend David Zucker and written by the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker trio (Airplane!, Top Secret!). This slapstick classic stars Leslie Nielsen as the iconic, deadpan Detective Frank Drebin, alongside Priscilla Presley as Jane Spencer, Ricardo Montalbán as the villainous Vincent Ludwig, George Kennedy as Captain Ed Hocken, and O.J. From banana peels to bee attacks, malfunctioning microphones to exploding opera singers—this movie is the definition of rapid-fire comedy and visual gags. We talk about the legacy of the Naked Gun franchise, its roots in Police Squad! I interviewed David Zucker, the director behind Airplane!, Naked Gun, and some of the funniest movies ever made. What makes this conversation fascinating isn't just the behind the scenes stories, but how he breaks down comedy writing like a science. We talked about his specific rules for making people laugh, his "flywheel theory" of pacing that keeps audiences laughing non-stop, and why they test-screened Airplane! so many times. If you want to understand what actually makes something funny, whether you're writing, performing, or just curious about the craft, this conversation will show you the discipline and technique behind comedy that looks effortless. #Tittaviflyger #LeslieNielsen #JimAbrahams #DavidZucker #JerryZucker

It's the post-Oscar episode, a little late but as a movie show we HAVE to talk about it, that moment, of course, when… erm… Hey, Conan. Still prepping for August's reboot of The Naked Gun, we're driving into Washington D.C. of 1991 Bush-era first time around and contemplating David Zucker's pivot to clear Republican sensibilities, mocking his own brother's success with Ghost and what the hell a Scary Movie could be anymore. At least 2 people involved in this film were ignored from the In Memorium of this year's ceremony and only one killed their ex and her partner.

Patreon Justin has picked some gems and corkers before, like Blood Simple and Hard Eight, and this time he's chosen the little known 1992 comedy, Brain Donors."Brain Donors" was produced during a time when Hollywood was revisiting and paying homage to classic comedy styles, and its production was heavily influenced by the desire to recreate the Marx Brothers' iconic brand of humor. The film was written by Pat Proft, known for his work on the "Naked Gun" series, and produced by David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, the trio behind many successful comedies of the 1980s. Their involvement ensured that the film would be packed with rapid-fire jokes, slapstick, and absurdity, staying true to the spirit of the Marx Brothers while adding a modern twist. The project was initially conceived as a direct tribute to the Marx Brothers, with the working title "Lame Ducks," and the characters were loosely based on Groucho, Chico, and Harpo Marx.John Turturro, who played the Groucho-esque character Jacques, was a standout in the cast, bringing his unique energy and comedic timing to the role. The production faced challenges in balancing the homage to classic comedy with appealing to contemporary audiences, which led to mixed reactions upon its release. Despite its star-studded creative team and ambitious vision, the film struggled at the box office, partly due to limited marketing and the niche appeal of its humor. However, over time, "Brain Donors" has garnered a cult following, appreciated for its commitment to reviving the chaotic, irreverent spirit of the Marx Brothers. The making of the film reflects a passionate attempt to honor a bygone era of comedy, even if it didn't achieve mainstream success. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackPlot SummaryRoland T Flakfixer, Jacques and Rocco, a trio of eccentric misfits, are hired by the wealthy widow Lillian Oglethorpe to establish a ballet company in honor of her late husband. What happens when you combine the directing trio (Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker) behind the spoof smash Airplane , the on-screen debut of one of the beloved movie stars of his generation (Val Kilmer), one of the most acclaimed actors/movie stars of HIS generation (Omar Shariff), satire focusing on World War II spy dramas, musical numbers satirizing Elvis road comedies, one underwater Western saloon fight, AND one extended sequence playing on misperceptions of the Swedish language?? The result is one genuinely wacky comedy which came out just under forty years ago and there has been nothing like it since then.  Also co-starring Lucy Gutteridge, Peter Cushing, and Michael Gough, it's time to go skeet surfing OR straighten the rug.....OR to shop at Macy's? :o  Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
