POPULARITY
This week on Peanuts and Popcorn, the peanuts are downright rotten as both the Cubs and Tigers continue to spiral, though Pete Crow‑Armstrong at least supplied a few sparks along the way.In Popcorn, we've got two terrific films on deck. We start with Tom's pick, Henri‑Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear (1953), the white‑knuckle thriller that became the blueprint for decades of action cinema. Then we pivot to Leo's choice, the Coen Brothers' first commercial feature, the lean, moody neo‑noir Blood Simple (1984).Next Show's Films:Tom's Pick: Carnal Knowledge (1971)Leo's Pick: The Battle of Algiers (1966)
Original Release Date: Monday 18 May 2026 Description: On this second episode of Year 20 (“the year we get it right!”), Dean and Phil have crime on their minds! They start with an appreciation of director Jules Dassin's classic film noir Night and the City. Then a Hitchcockian thriller, Mirage, by Edward Dmytryk, the man largely responsible for Jules Dassin getting blacklisted gets analyzed. Both films show telltale signs of having been directed by men with quite different experiences of the Hollywood blacklist. A neo-noir that never disappoints is Robert Altman's Philip Marlowe adaptation The Long Goodbye. Dean and Phil discuss the film as a “satire of melancholy” and share many stories about the filmmakers and actors' remarkable approaches to telling the story. Another 1970s mystery film, the ill-fated Agatha about the real-life disappearance of the great mystery novelist Agatha Christie for 11 days in 1926 gets reviewed. The final suspense picture on the Chillpak crime blotter this week is Henri-Georges Clouzot's masterful The Wages Fear. Dean reviewed it several weeks back, and now it's Phil's turn to compare and contrast it with William Friedkin's 1977 adaptation of the same source material, Sorcerer. Finally, one new blockbuster, the crowd-pleasing The Devil Wears Prada 2 gets analyzed both as a legacy sequel and as a very hopeful harbinger for the summer movie season.
In the eighth episode of Season 12: On the Road, Kyle is joined for a one-on-one conversation with filmmaker Mario Ruiz to discuss the existentialist brooding and colonialist critique that is Henri-Georges Clouzot's adaptation of Georges Arnaud's personally inspired assessment of the human condition in one of the greatest film thrillers of all time, The Wages of Fear (1953).
This week I'm reviewing Henri-Georges Clouzot's "The Wages of Fear". This is an adaptation of a novel of the same name and is about four men on a mission to drive two trucks filled with nitro glycerin across the south american jungle. This is a must see movie. It would later be remade as "Sorecerer" directed by William Friedkin. I highly recommend both films and must say that the less you know the btter. Go watch this and/or Sorcerer blind and then come back and listen to this podcast.
In which the Mister and Kid 2 join me in reviewing LES DIABOLIQUES (1955) from the novel, "Celle qui n'était plus" by writers,Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejaca and a screenplay by Henri-Georges Clouzot and Jérôme Géronimi. In director Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1955 suspense classic LES DIABOLIQUES, the frail Christina (Véra Clouzot) and the steely Nicole (Simone Signoret) — the wife and mistress of a cruel boarding school headmaster (Paul Meurisse) — conspire to murder their shared tormentor to escape his abuse. After drowning him and dumping his body into the school's neglected swimming pool, the women are paralyzed by dread when the corpse mysteriously vanishes after the pool is eventually drained. Their guilt-ridden reality soon dissolves into a paranoid nightmare as strange occurrences and sightings suggest that their victim may not be as dead as they intended. The film clocks in at 1 h and 57 m, is unrated and you can find it on HBO Max, Plex, Roku Channel and to buy/rent on Prime Video. Original Release Date: Monday 16 March 2026 Description: This week's show begins with Dean and Phil discussing the World Baseball Classic and sharing (and answering) an email from a loyal listener who wanted to celebrate the recent 25th Anniversary of Dean's series “The Lone Gunmen”. Recorded on Sunday morning before the Oscars (and before the big “Firefly” announcement), the bulk of the discussion surrounds what Dean and Phil are looking for at Hollywood's big night. They discuss how talented filmmaker and entertaining video host Ryan Casselman might just have devised scientific formulae for “decoding” Oscar voting. The controversy surrounding Timothée Hal Chalamet's comments regarding ballet and opera get full analysis. Then, five films go under the microscope, including two by classic thriller director Henri-Georges Clouzot, two tales of nuclear paranoia from Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow, and the multi-Oscar-winning 1983 classic Tender Mercies
This episode explores Manon as both a tragic love story and a sharp portrait of postwar France. We examine how Henri-Georges Clouzot adapts an 18th-century novel into a study of moral ambiguity in the shadow of Liberation and the trial of Philippe Pétain. The discussion focuses on Manon as a socially marked woman shaped by poverty, sexuality, and public judgment, and on Robert as a dislocated Resistance fighter whose devotion masks instability rather than heroism. We consider how Clouzot crafts a distinctly unsentimental “woman's picture,” how his visual style reflects a climate of suspicion and exhaustion, and how the film anticipates the psychological pressure of later works like The Wages of Fear and Les Diaboliques.Subscribe here

It may not get as much discussion as it did seventy years ago when it first premiered, but 'Les Diaboliques' (or as it was known in America, 'Diabolique') is one of the most profoundly influential thrillers in cinematic history. So let's dig in for a discussion of the plot twist you've probably seen a dozen times the way it was done originally, by Hitchcock's French rival Henri-Georges Clouzot, and discuss a classic tale of the perfect crime gone wrong.
Joku & Rosa discuss 'A Complete Unknown' a 2024 American biographical musical drama film directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, about American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, the film portrays Dylan through his earliest folk music success until the momentous controversy over his use of electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. We also discuss 'Memoir of a Snail' a 2024 Australian adult stop-motion animated tragicomedy film written, produced and directed by Adam Elliot. It stars the voices of Sarah Snook, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Eric Bana, Magda Szubanski, Dominique Pinon, Tony Armstrong, Paul Capsis, Nick Cave, and Jacki Weaver. Lastly, we review 'The Wages of Fear' a 1953 thriller film directed and co-written by Henri-Georges Clouzot, and starring Yves Montand, Charles Vanel, Peter van Eyck and Véra Clouzot. The film centres on a group of four down-on-their-luck European men who are hired by an American oil company to drive two trucks over mountain dirt roads, loaded with nitroglycerin needed to extinguish an oil well fire. Welcome back, movie enthusiasts, to another thrilling episode of WN Movie Talk, where we dive deep into the world of cinema. Today I embark on an exhilarating adventure as I explore two cinematic masterpieces: Henri-Georges Clouzot's 1953 classic Wages of Fear and its gripping 1970's counterpart, Sorcerer, directed by Exorcist director William Friedkin two films based on the novel Le Salaire de la peur, examining how each film approaches similar themes and plot points while maintaining its own distinct identity."Wages of Fear." A groundbreaking film of its era, immerses us in the treacherous world of four desperate men tasked with transporting nitro-glycerine across perilous terrain. We delve into the tense atmosphere, the intricate character dynamics, and the raw intensity that make this film a timeless masterpiece. But our journey doesn't stop there. We shift gears to explore William Friedkin's 1977 remake, "Sorcerer." starring Roy Schieder. A bold reinterpretation of Clouzot's original, "Sorcerer" thrusts us into a world of political unrest and moral ambiguity as four men from different walks of life are brought together by fate to undertake a harrowing mission. We analyze Friedkin's stylistic choices, the thematic layers woven throughout the narrative, and the ways in which "Sorcerer" both honours its predecessor and carves its own path.Thank you for tuning in to WN Movie Talk. This week, we're getting sweaty and clenching our buttocks tightly, because we've got two renowned movies filled with tight-fisted, white-knuckled tension. The Wages of Fear (AKA Le Salaire de la Peur), from director Henri-Georges Clouzot, is a proto-action thriller from the 1950s, which takes a while getting to its set-pieces and then doesn't let up until the final frame. Twenty-some years later, William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) decided to (not) remake it as the poorly-titled Sorcerer, updating those incredible action scenes with a massive budget and a more socio-politicial undercurrent. Hosts Josh and Jamie and special returning guest Spencer Rider (of Those Good Old Fashioned Values + Get Cynical) discuss two impeccably crafted, process-based French thriller classics with a double feature of Henri-Georges Clouzot's white knuckle depiction of precarious, expendable labor in THE WAGES OF FEAR (1953) and Jacques Becker's authentic, biographical prison break movie LE TROU (1960).
This week's Sunscream takes us to THE template for psychological horror: Henri-Georges Clouzot's DIABOLIQUE!Just as Clouzot was obsessed with his wife, we're obsessed with this movie: It's got cartoonishly awful husbands with wives and mistresses scheming against him, rundown boarding schools, French Columbo, creative hauntings, and suspense by the barrelful! We're discussing it all, including how Clouzot's craft really makes this special.Plus, find out about the origins of the twist ending and how this movie created a spitewar that changed cinema forever in in the return of Hooray for Hollywood!
Scary Summer, now known as Sunscream, continues with Jordan Peele's summer blockbuster spectacle creature feature: NOPE!It's a spoiler-full discussion about this high noon horror as we go super deep on creature design, its themes of exploitation and dehumanization, how NOPE rates as a western, and just how they made the sky look like that.Plus, Erin has a new segment drilling down into what, exactly, spectacle means and how perception defines this movie.Next time we're going to a classic of French cinema: Henri-Georges Clouzot's LES DIABOLIQUES!

Cannabis comic and activist Ngaio Bealum joins us for our SEASON TWO PREMIERE, and he's selected two movies that are real gateway drugs to classic cinema. Both films are tense AF depictions of desperate men trying to pull off that one last score. Both movies were also made by domineering filmmakers, so, as Ngaio says, this could have been our asshole director episode. First up, is THE KILLING (1956), a cutting-edge noir from a young Stanley Kubrick making his first Hollywood studio film. Made on a shoestring budget, Kubrick still shows more than mere glimpses of his future promise with overlapping timelines, a camera that appears to move through walls and furniture, and brutal violence that is still shocking today. Backing Kubrick is a noir who's who with Sterling Hayden putting together an intricate racetrack heist, Timothy Carey AKA God Hilliard as a deranged hitman, Elisha Cook, Jr. as the weak link in the chain, and Marie Windsor as Elisha's conniving wife. There's also a hairy wrestler airplane spinning cops! What more can you ask for? How about a bunch of sweaty dudes driving truckloads of nitro across treacherous South American terrain where any bump in the road--and there are loads of bumps--could send them all sky high? Well, that's what we've got in Ngaio's second pick, Henri-Georges Clouzot's THE WAGES OF FEAR from 1953. This movie is more of a gateway drug to French cinema that classic film as a whole, but the last hour or so of it is a real white-knuckler so you'll really want to heed the weed recommendations for this one to get you through all that suspense. "Don't smoke a sativa with this one," Ngaio warns. The Killing is streaming for free with ads on Pluto The Wages of Fear is streaming on HBOMax, Criterion Channel & Kanopy You can follow Ngaio on Twitter and Instagram at @ngaio420. We hope to have him back on the show soon. Hosts: Bob Calhoun, Philena Franklin & Greg Franklin Theme song and closing theme: Chaki the Funk Wizard Cory Sklar is on assignment but he will be back for our Psychedelic Kaiju episode in February. The movies will be WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966) & MATANGO (1963).

The third episode of our season on the awesome movie year of 1953 features the year's biggest flop, Dr. Seuss' The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. “The chaste woman loves to contemplate dawn.” Hosts John Cribbs and Christopher Funderburg sit down to discuss Henri-Georges Clouzot's masterpiece of suspense, Les Diaboliques. The film follows a pair of abused women seeking revenge on their tormentor as it builds to one of cinema's greatest (and most diabolical) twist endings. The conversation covers Clouzot's controversial past and working methods, why the comparisons to Hitchcock are reductive, the artistic influence of his wife Vera, why Clouzot's Le Corbeau made both furious the Nazis and French resistance furious, and the balance of power between Clouzot's twins masterpieces Diaboliques and The Wages of Fear. Hot off two of the biggest hits of the seventies (The French Connection and The Exorcist), Friedkin decided to do his own version of one of the most acclaimed international films of all time, Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear, the tale of four desperate fugitives who are paid by an avaricious oil company to drive trucks full of nitroglycerine hundreds of miles to put out a raging fire at their refinery. It was an expensive and troubled production and had the bad timing of opening the same weekend that Star Wars was released widely across North America, heralding a cultural sea change in Hollywood that swept up his fellow auteurs in the New American Cinema of the seventies. Peter and I compare Sorcerer and The Wages of Fear, the two different ways these films criticize U.S. imperialism, and how Friedkin's misbegotten film eventually got a proper restoration in the 2010s and found a new audience. We also discuss the notorious international cut of Sorcerer, re-titled Wages of Fear and heavily tampered with by the worldwide distributor against the director's wishes. Plus: Peter tells us about the mood in the UK in the wake of the passing of Her Majesty. We're back with our second running feature on Movies For Life - remakes! And you'll definitely have to strap in for this discussion, because these two movies are probably some of the most stressful ones that have ever been made! First up is another movie from Henri-Georges Clouzot, the incredible 1953 thriller THE WAGES OF FEAR. Then we're heading to 1977 for the remake (or another adaptation of the original novel, either one) directed by William Friedkin, we're talking about SORCERER! While these are both fantastic movies with some heart-stopping moments of tension, the two of us are kind of each a champion of one film at the start of the discussion. As we go through comparing and contrasting how each one handles certain plot points and situations, do we still have the same opinion at the end? You'll have to listen to find out! Like art itself, "Hitchcockian" can't be easily defined—but you know it when you see it. Sinister plotting, mistaken identity, dangerous obsession; a blonde, some mommy issues, a little gallows humor. That's Hitchcock more or less. This week, Adam and Josh share their TOP 5 HITCHCOCKIAN MOVIES, with picks that range from Hitch contemporaries like Henri-Georges Clouzot to current masters like Bong Joon-ho, Spike Lee, and Pedro Almodovar.
