Welcome, you depraved ghouls and ghost enthusiasts, to another episode of Sitting in the Dark—the podcast where we ask the truly vital horror questions, like, “Is this house cursed by restless spirits, or is it just what happens when unresolved trauma and black mold get into a knife fight?” This week, host Tommy Metz III is joined by fellow ghost provocateurs Pete Wright, Kynan Dias, and Kyle Olson to dig into haunted house horror—though not just your average “the walls are bleeding, but let's still stay the night” tales. No, we're talking haunted spaces—as in, Session 9, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and The Others—three films that prove the scariest thing in any building isn't the wallpaper peeling off the walls… it's the emotional wreckage you brought with you.Tommy kicks things off with a haunted homage to asbestos removal (yes, really), leading a deep dive into Brad Anderson's Session 9—the only film that will make you afraid of abandoned hospitals and David Caruso's dramatic whisper-acting. Then it's on to Mike Flanagan's miraculous studio rescue, Ouija: Origin of Evil—the rare horror prequel that's smarter than its brand deal, sharper than its title suggests, and way too good to be based on a board game. Finally, the gang closes the coffin lid on Alejandro Amenábar's The Others, Nicole Kidman's masterclass in weaponized repression, ghostly guilt, and why sunlight is overrated anyway.Along the way, expect critical mass levels of hot takes on ghost psychology, asbestos-based metaphors, PG-13 trauma horror, and why the real haunted house is sometimes the one you build inside your own mind. So pull the blackout curtains tight, polish your crucifixes, and maybe call your therapist—because tonight, we're not just sitting in the dark. As unexplained events escalate, eerie secrets about the house and its occupants begin to surface, leading to one of cinema's most unforgettable twists. Not to be overlooked, Eric Sykes (a familiar face from British comedy and film classics) delivers a quietly unsettling performance that perfectly complements the film's chilling atmosphere. Roxy & Andrew break down every spine-tingling moment—from the suspenseful buildup of the mansion's dark corridors and the iconic, atmospheric scenes with billowing curtains to the shocking twist that redefines everything you thought you knew. Steven Soderbergh's new PRESENCE is an unconventional haunted house story with a twist that reminded us of 2001's THE OTHERS, though to say exactly why risks spoiling how Alejandro Amenábar performs his own twist on a comparatively traditional haunted house story. That twist forms the foundation of our discussion this week, which freely roams spoiler territory as we consider how the ending revelation shapes our understanding of THE OTHERS' perspective on religion and the afterlife, and how the film's abundant symbolism lines up with its narrative as a ghost story. Then in Feedback, we revisit our recent “Fanged Attraction” pairing with a couple of listeners offering their own interpretations of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA and NOSFERATU. Given their shared source material, Robert Eggers' NOSFERATU and Francis Ford Coppola's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA understandably have a lot overlap in terms of plot and character, but the two films are miles apart in their interpretation of that source material, particularly as applied to its titular vampire. We're of split opinions on Eggers' bleak, monster-forward characterization of Orlock, especially how it plays against NOSFERATU's ideas about female desire and sexuality, but agree it provides a fascinating counterpoint to Coppola's florid spin on the Count as a tragic romantic antihero. We examine that contrast further in Connections alongside other character parallels — the Renfields, the Van Helsings, the maidens fair — as well as how the two films' diverging styles each reinforce their filmmaker's take on the title character. And in place of Your Next Picture Show, we offer some impromptu reflections on the life and work of David Lynch, who died the day this episode was recorded.  Please share your thoughts about BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, NOSFERATU, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.

Filmmaker Pascal Plante (director of Red Rooms, one of our favorite movies of the year) joins to discuss Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar's 1996 debut, Thesis. While riveting simply at the topical level of its tense genre thrills, the movie also metatextually concerns itself with the moving image as a mediated reflection of our corporeal realities, the push-pull of commercialism and artistry, and the ethics of satisfying a violent culture's sublimated desires for shocking, exploitative imagery. We discuss Amenábar's preternatural capacity behind the camera; how his ability to mystify with the language of cinema allows viewers to recognize their complicity in the film's graphic scenarios as spectators while never sacrificing the raw thrills of moviegoing. Then, citing Michael Haneke's writing, we discuss the nature of violence in media, the responsibilites of the artist, and the morbid concept of mindless entertainment. Finally, we connect the film's subject matter to that of Pascal's latest, discussing parallels, distinctions, and the reward of watching films that assume their audience's intelligence. Red Rooms is available now on VOD and on Region A Blu Ray from Vinegar Syndrome.Get access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.

Hey everyone, this week we have Caleb's pick for SPOOKTOBER! This pick comes to us from director Alejandro Amenábar and is “The Others.” This film is very hard to talk about without spoiling the film, but it takes place in 1945 at the end of the war where we find Nicole Kidman giving some new caretakers the tour of the house before giving them the job. The film gets very interesting when her daughter and son start to see “Others” in the home and Nicole suspects that ghosts are inhabiting the home. This film was a blast to talk through and we hope you enjoyed it too. You need to stay away from the light! Or do you? What is light anyway? What is truth, what is meaning, what is words? We try getting to the bottom of all of this by discussing the 2001 ghost movie The Others.   Nicole Kidman is Grace, a young mother who seems to have misplaced her marbles. She's alone in an enormous house with two little moppet children who can't go into the light because of an illness [citation needed]. For some reason, she still needs to open the curtains every day and pretend like everything's okay. Grace, we're here to tell you: surrender. Keep those curtains closed. Don't bother cleaning. Adopt the darkness, like Bane. You'll be happier.   Anyway, this movie rules, and it's a great contrast from last week's bloody meta mess movie, Scream.   Bonus video: We play The Trailer Challenge(™), where we recall lines from trailers of long ago that stick in our craw, then watch the trailers to see if we're remembering them correctly.

We continue our Camp Cinema season in our third episode covering Sugar and Spice (2001) and Vanilla Sky (2002)Special Guest: Good friend and frequent guest, MollyThe early Aughts was a bizarre time in American culture. The heady surge of the late 90s into Y2K was quicky benzo'd by 9/11 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our two selections for the 2000s were written and produced before the big comedown, and they both definitely have a "we can do anything" vibe. Sugar and Spice deftly somersaulted through the byzantine development process at New Line Cinema, who were likely distracted by their massive production of Lord of the Rings trilogy at the time. What could have easily been a teen movie cash-in is a rather spunky, satirical, and fun mess. Does it work? No, but it is sassy enough to not care. Vanilla Sky is not fun. Here Cameron Crowe's grandiose vision was blinded by his fiery ambition. Coming off his best film, Almost Famous, Crowe decided to tackle a remake of Alejandro Amenábar's 1997 Spanish film Abre Los Ojos. Vanilla Sky does not align with the traditional definition of camp, but it certainly seems to be the bullseye of what Susan Sontag called Naive Camp. It is a film so devoutly serious about something so frivolously stupid.

Critic and writer Logan Kenny returns to the podcast to help us dissect the most divisive film of Cruise and director Cameron Crowe's careers, 2001's "Vanilla Sky." Crowe and Cruise made their long awaited reunion at the turn of the century with an ambitious remake of director Alejandro Amenábar's "Open Your Eyes," bringing back original Penelope Cruz to star alongside Cameron Diaz, Kurt Russell and Jason Lee. The results weren't quite a disaster, but to this day, the film has divided audiences and critics, potentially altering the future of both Cruise and Crowe's careers. A distinctive, challenging piece of American pop cinema, "Vanilla Sky" joins the ranks of misunderstood masterpieces like Spike Lee's "Bamboozled," Jane Campion's "In the Cut" and David Cronenberg's "Crash" as one of the defining films of the podcast.
