The Most Difficult Person You'll ever Meet // Dealing with Difficult People, Part 1

So I wonder – who's the most difficult person in your life right now? Chances are you can picture their face. Well I'd like to spend some time with you chatting about the number one most difficult person in your life.   When People Look at Us Let me ask you a question: when the world looks at the church, what does it see? When people look at the church of Jesus Christ, what is it they see in the media image? Sexual abuse on the news, division amongst denominations, people who mean well demonstrating against this, that and the other! It sees a bunch of people who say one thing and do another. On the one thing we profess God‘s love, on the other, well, the church seems to be saying, in it's media image, “do this, don't do that, but by the way, don't mind the fact that we have systematically covered up sexual abuse of children for decades." There's a name for that and it's called ‘hypocrisy' and the world hates hypocrisy. You and I hate hypocrisy. What do people expect to see when they look at God's people? What do people expect to see? Tony Campolo is a wonderful man out of the U.S., you may have heard of him. He just a wonderful minister of God's Word and he often asks young people, when he meets them in universities: “What's the one thing that you know that Jesus said?” and mostly people say this - mostly people remember that Jesus said: “Love your enemy!” And too often it seems that we as God's people; as Christians, are kind of telling people how far they have strayed from God. You know, we talk about this social issue, or that social issue, instead of reaching out to people and telling them how close God really is in Jesus Christ. Well that's the big picture; that's the macro. What about the micro? What about you and me? When they look at us, what do they see? Do they see, ‘love your enemy'? First John chapter 4 verse 7 says this: Let us love one another for love comes from God ... And when you look at Jesus, when you look at how He dealt with people and what He taught and what He spoke about, the biggest thing for Him was that love-walk; the biggest thing for Him was valuing people and loving them into the Kingdom of God. We got a new revelation of who God is when Jesus arrived and then when you look at the rest of the New Testament, the Epistles that come after the Gospels, the letters that were written amongst the New Testament church when Jesus had risen again, more and more you see that revelation expounded as ‘walk in love'. Love God and love other people. John Grey, the author of that famous book, 'Men Are From Mars and Women are From Venus', makes a very interesting point in that book. He says that very few people ever grow in love. Why is that? Because loving is difficult. The people we love can be difficult sometimes. Forty five percent of marriages - almost half - fail. I wonder of those that are left, how many of them are lousy marriages? We want to love; it's not enough to want to love, we actually need to know how to love, I really believe that. Let me just say that again. It's not enough for us to know that we ought to walk in love; we actually need to know how to do that. And so on Christianityworks this week we are starting a series of four messages called Dealing With Difficult People. Because difficult people are all around us, difficult relationships are all around us and our ability to look like Jesus and be like Jesus and love like Jesus, depends on our ability to deal with the difficult people in our lives - those that Jesus referred to as our enemies. Let me ask you, who's the most difficult person you'll ever meet? Just close your eyes for a minute and visualise the most difficult person you ever met. I'm sure you can see their face and it stirs up emotions in you. Now open your eyes. If I had a mirror I'd be standing in front of you holding up the mirror and saying, “Here, look at the most difficult person that you will ever meet.” Take a good look, because we look at ourselves for five, maybe ten minutes in the mirror in the morning and then we spend the rest of the day looking at other people. Day after day after day, we look at other people and sometimes the better we know them, the better we know their faults and weaknesses and their blind spots and we experience the things that they do to hurt us, or the things that they don't do to hurt us and we go from recognising their strengths and weaknesses to judging those. Now, it's right to look at someone and say, "this person is good at this and not good at that" and to assess them. But we can step over a line, where that good assessment of someone turns into judgement and that line is called, ‘anger and resentment'. When all of a sudden, what other people do to us or say to us or omit to do to us - when those things get us angry and resentful and vengeful - we have stepped over a very important line and all the time we forget that in order for us to have a difficult person in our lives we have to have a relationship with them. It's not so much that they are difficult people; it's that we are having a difficult relationship. It takes two to tango, as the saying goes. And sometime as we get to know these people better and their weaknesses hurt us and their failures grate up against our personalities, we can start to judge them. Instead of looking at them through God's eyes, we end up looking at them through the devil's eyes. Jesus said: “You've heard it said, 'Don't murder' and anyone who murders will be subject to judgement, but I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother, is subject to judgement.” Well, what is that judgement? What does that look like? Why do we go there?   The Anatomy of Judgement So what is it, what happens when we run into a difficult person and we step over that line, we step over the line from a sober assessment of who they are into that realm of judgement and resentment? Well, Jesus talked about that because it was an important issue - was two thousand years ago, it still is today. This is what He said, if you have a Bible, grab it, you can open it at Matthew's Gospel; first Book in the New Testament, chapter 6 verse 22, Matthew 6:22, this is what he said. He said: The eye is the lamp of the body so if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. And when the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness? The eye, when you think about it, is our major organ of perception. We see the world through our eyes and Jesus was using it here as a metaphor. It's true in the physical sense but it's also true in an emotional and spiritual sense. How we see things, often becomes the problem when we are having a relationship that is difficult. Now if the eye is healthy then we'll see light; we'll see things the way that they are but Jesus says: If the eye is unhealthy then you will be full of darkness and how dark is that darkness? When we get a wrong perspective, it kind of creeps up on you. I suffer from Glaucoma which is a disease of the eye where the pressure in your eye ultimately damages the optic nerve that carries the images back to your brain, and it happens very gradually. You lose your peripheral vision and all of a sudden you can barely see and by then it's too late. Now fortunately, for me, they caught it early and I've got treatment and I can see just fine. But when our eye is diseased; when our perception is diseased, we often don't notice that it's going on. Have a listen to this wonderful story, it was written by Frank Koche, in the magazine 'Proceedings' which is the magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute. This is what he writes. He says: Two battleships assigned to the training squadron had been sent on manoeuvres in heavy weather for several days. I was serving on the lead battleship and I was on watch on the bridge when night fell. The visibility was poor, with patchy fog so the Captain remained on the bridge to keep an eye on all activities. Shortly after dark, the look-out on the wing of the bridge reported: “Light bearing on the starboard bow.” “Is it steady or moving astern?” the Captain called out. The look-out replied: “Steady, Captain,” which meant that we were on a dangerous collision course with that ship. The Captain then called to the signalman. He said: “Signal that ship. We are on a collision course, advise that you change course twenty degrees.” Back came a signal: “Advise for you to change course twenty degrees.” And the Captain said: “Send - “I am a Captain, change course twenty degrees.” “I'm a seaman second class” came back the reply, “You'd better change course twenty degrees.” By that time the Captain was furious and he spat out: “Send - I'm a battleship, change course twenty degrees.” Back came the flashing light: “I'm a lighthouse.” We changed course twenty degrees.” The Captain was caught in a fog. Now there were two battleships out there on exercise and he thought that that other light was a battleship but he had fog; he couldn't see properly. He was trying to keep an eye on things but he's vision was clouded. The picture in his head was of two ships and he relied on the picture in his head and the picture was wrong, yet he got angry even though it was because he had the wrong picture in his head and that is exactly what we do. We have a map in our head of other people and why they do what they do and how they do it and what they're doing to us. We have this map in our head of other people and sometimes it gets distorted. Sometimes we don't have the right end of the stick. Sometimes our vision is clouded and we just get it plain wrong. Maybe if we're insecure, we want other people to walk on egg-shells because of our insecurity. Maybe if we are arrogant we want other people to be perfect, made in our image. You know, perfection is always: they're exactly like me. Maybe if we've got selfish ambition we want people to get out of our road so that we can go and do what we want to do. The list goes on. Not so long ago, I visited a city; a large city that I used to live in, and I had an old street directory and I was trying to travel from point A to point B in the centre of the city in my car. And I got to a point and I discovered all of a sudden, they had put a pedestrian mall in the middle of one of the main streets, I had the wrong map. And when we do that in our relationships with other people, it can be a painful thing. Our past hurts or our own weaknesses or our own sin, all of those things - the devil uses those to destroy our relationships. We see things through the lens of our experiences. I wear glasses, maybe you wear glasses, maybe you don't, but we see things through the lens of who we are, our strengths and weaknesses, of our experiences, of our past, of our insecurities. If we looked at some of the people in our lives who are so difficult, the ones who hurt us and disappoints us, the ones who we've made our enemies - if we knew the hurts and disappointments in their lives, that make them do what they do, it would be enough to stop us from any feelings of hostility or anger or anything like that. ‘The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness and if the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness.' In other words if you think you are seeing light and clearly, but actually it is distorted, boy, that is a really, really bad place to be. Come on, isn't it sometimes the problems in our relationships are not so much what other people are doing but how we see the world? What are the things in my life; what are the things in your life that distort our view of exactly what's going on? How is it that we can see clearly?   Don't Judge We are talking about judgement. We are talking about dealing with difficult people and how it is sometimes that we get all hurt by what other people do. When so often it's got to do with our own failures and our own weaknesses and the way we see the world based on who we are. Again Jesus talked about this, open a Bible, if you've got one, at Matthew chapter 7 verse 1, this is what He said. He said: Do not judge so that you may not be judged. For with the judgement that you make, you will be judged and the measure you give will be the measure that you get.” Now under what circumstances, according to Jesus, is it ok to judge other people? Never! “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. Wow! Because judgement is about anger and retribution, when I judge you, I want my pound of flesh; I want to tear you apart. Yea, that's what we are like as people and Jesus is saying: “It's not your job. Don't judge other people.” Boy that's hard! Have a look at Romans chapter 12 verse 19, just flick there for a moment. This is what the Apostle Paul writes: Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God because it's written: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Now if your enemies are hungry, feed them, if they're thirsty, give them something to drink, for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads. Do not overcome by evil but overcome evil with good. If I judge what, God is going to judge me? God will judge me by the same rules that I apply to judging other people. Look at it - back to Matthew chapter 7, where Jesus was talking. He said: Why is it that you see the speck in your neighbour's eye but you don't notice the log in your own eye. Or how can you say to your neighbour; “Let me take the speck out of your eye,” while there's a log in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye and then you'll see clearly enough to take the speck out of your neighbour's eye. The log in my eye, the log in your eye, that's our failures and our weaknesses and our downsides and our sin - that's what causes our perception to be distorted. Come on, if I'm an insecure person, am I going to expect everybody to walk on egg-shells for me? If I'm an arrogant person, am I going to expect them all to kow-tow to me? Or am I going to humble myself and take the log out of my eye. If I'm on a mission; I've got a goal in life that's not from God and I want to roll over the top of people, will I lay it down? This stuff's not easy because, the log in our own eye, we don't want to know it's there. We don't want to admit that we have a log in our own eye, but we sometimes do. It's not easy to get rid of - that's why we need the Holy Spirit; that's why we need the Word of God. That's why you and I are together right now. We can be such slackos but what if - what if we put determination and humility in our hearts? What if we came to Jesus and said: “Lord, I've heard your Word and I confess this log. I confess my own poverty, I confess my complete inability to do anything about it, except to lay it at your feet - to lay it at the foot of the cross - and say: “Lord I need your help.” Because you know something - anything less is hypocrisy. The word ‘hypocrisy' that Jesus uses there, means an actor who is two faced. The world hates hypocrites - you and I hate hypocrites. How can we be hypocrites? How can we walk around with a log in our eye and say to a neighbour: “You've got a speck in yours.” Come on! Now does that mean that we can never deal with someone else's problem? No! That's not what Jesus said. Have a look at chapter 7 verse 5 of Matthew again. He said: You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour's eye. Because when we take out the log; when we take out our failures out of the equation, when we take off the devil's glasses and put on God's glasses and we see the world clearly through His eyes, through God's Word, through who He is, all of a sudden the judgement goes away, a desire for anger and revenge goes away. You and I, we can't genuinely help anybody when we are angry with them. Can I say that again? We can't genuinely help anybody to take the speck out of their eye when we are angry with them. All we can give them is cynical, self-serving and self-seeking hypocrisy and judgement. First we need take the log out of our own eyes, first we need to admit that maybe our own insecurities are ruining this relationship. Maybe our own selfishness is ruining this relationship. Maybe some unrealistic expectations are ruining this relationship. Jesus said: “Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees. You hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and plate but inside they're full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup so that the outside may also become clean.” How do I deal with difficult people? For me, the first step is saying, ‘I'm the most difficult person I will ever meet. I am with me 24/7, I am with me every minute of every day of every week of every month of every year for the rest of my life on this earth and Jesus is saying to me, Jesus is saying to you: Examine your own motives in the light of God's Word and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Have a look again at the Book of Romans, if you will, with me - chapter 5 verses 6 to 8. Paul writes this. He says: For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though perhaps, for a good person, someone might actually dare to die, but God proves His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. When you and I were still sinners; when we were in enmity to God, God proved His love for us, by looking beyond our sin. He didn't let the hurt that He felt at our sin, immobilise Him or deter Him from the cross. We all know John 3:16 - that's the good news, because: God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that whoever believes in Him won't perish but have eternal life. But what about First John 3:16 - that letter toward the end of the New Testament - what does that say? Gotta remember this one too, it says this: “We know love by this - that He laid down His life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for each other. In other words be imitators of God.” We are made to be like God - not to be God - but to be like God. We're made in His image and the one thing that stops us from that is our sin, our weaknesses and our failures and Jesus is saying: Take the log out of your eye. Because as long as you carry it round, you are the most difficult person you will ever meet and when you can see clearly - when you can see through my eyes - when you can see your enemies as the people who God created and God loves, as people made in His image, all of a sudden life becomes a lot better. All of a sudden it becomes so much easier to deal with those difficult people, when we acknowledge that we are part of the difficulty in that relationship. It takes courage to identify the log in your eye. You know, it takes determination to cast it out. It takes humility to love your enemy. So how about it? Don't underestimate it - this is a huge thing. It's being prepared to change our perspective; to lay our pride down, to struggle through this over and over again, to die to ourselves for the glory of Jesus Christ. When they look at you, when they look at me, will they see someone and say: “Now there's someone that's like Jesus, there is someone who heard Jesus say: 'Love your enemy.'” Come on, will they?

In May of 1983, the world of synthesizers and electronic music as we knew it would change forever with the launch of the Yamaha DX7. To celebrate 40 years since its launch, Rob Puricelli spoke to Dr John Chowning, the developer of FM synthesis, Dave Bristow and Gary Leuenberger, sound designers for the original DX7 and Manny Fernandez, who has worked on all Yamaha's FM projects from the Mk.II DX7 through to today's Montage M series.See the Show Notes for further details.Chapters00:00 - Introduction01:55 - First Experiences Of The DX712:49 - Did The DX7 Meet Expectations?16:57 - The Feedback Loop17:51 - Creating And Sharing Sounds22:47 - A Career From Creating Patches27:55 - Sound Design Using FM31:36 - Hearing Your Own Sounds34:26 - Working With Don Lewis44:26 - Demonstrating The DX757:00 - FM Synthesis 40 Years On01:07:12 - Formant Shaping And The Future Of FMDr John Chowning BiogBorn in Salem, New Jersey in 1934, John Chowning spent his school years in Wilmington, Delaware. Following military service and four years at Wittenberg University in Ohio, he studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. He received a doctorate in composition (DMA) from Stanford University in 1966, where he studied with Leland Smith. Chowning discovered the frequency modulation synthesis (FM) algorithm in 1967. This breakthrough in the synthesis of timbres allowed a very simple yet elegant way of creating and controlling time-varying spectra. In 1973 Stanford University licensed the FM synthesis patent to Yamaha in Japan, leading to the most successful synthesis engine in the history of electronic musical instruments. He taught computer sound synthesis and composition at Stanford University's Department of Music. In 1974, with John Grey, James (Andy) Moorer, Loren Rush and Leland Smith, he founded the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), which remains one of the leading centres for computer music and related research. Although he retired in 1996, he has remained in contact with CCRMA activities.Chowning was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1988 and awarded the Honorary Doctor of Music by Wittenberg University in 1990. The French Ministre de la Culture awarded him the Diplôme d'Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 1995. He was given the Doctorat Honoris Causa in 2002 by the Université de la Méditerranée, by Queen's University in 2010, Hamburg University in 2016, and Laureate of the Giga-Hertz-Award in 2013.Dave Bristow BiogDave was born in London and worked as a professional keyboard player recording and touring internationally with a variety of artists including Polyphony, Slender Loris, June Tabor, Tallis and 2nd Vision. Active in synthesizer development, he played a central role in voicing the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and is internationally recognized as one of the important contributors to the development and voicing of FM synthesis, co-authoring a textbook on the subject with Dr John Chowning. He spent three years at IRCAM in Paris, running a MIDI and synthesis studio working with contemporary music composers and artists, then moving to the United States in the 1990's to work for Emu Systems, Inc. on sampling and filter-based synthesizers. In 2002, he began working again with Yamaha developing ringtones and system alert sounds for the SMAF audio chip series used in cell phones and mobile devices. He has been an instructor at Shoreline Community College teaching electronic music production and synthesis for ten years, but still finds plenty of time for composing and playing piano with RedShift jazz quartet and developing his interest in computer arts.Gary Leuenberger BiogGary started in music at a young age and, in 1975, founded G. Leuenberger & Co. in San Francisco. It soon became one of the world's largest retailers of pianos, synthesizers and electronic keyboards. In 1980 he started working with Yamaha as part of their product development team. It was through this that he was recruited, along with the likes of Dave Bristow and Don Lewis, to create the factory presets for the DX7. Gary's most famous, or infamous, patch was the legendary E.Piano 1 which became equally one of the most popular and despised sounds ever! Nevertheless, his association with Yamaha continued until 2000, at which point Gary went back into education, gaining his Bachelors of Music and Masters in Classical Piano Performance from San Francisco State University in 2007.Since then, he has taught electronic music at SFSU and gives private tutoring to budding musicians of all ages. Manny Fernandez BiogDr. Manny Fernandez has been involved in synthesizer programming and development with many manufacturers for over 35 years. Initially self-taught prior to traditional university study of analogue synthesis, in the late 1970's - early 1980's the emerging digital synthesis techniques caught his attention with their expanded timbral possibilities. He acquired a DX7 in the fall of 1983 and using Dr. Chowning's original academic articles as a guide began exploring FM synthesis in depth. In 1987 he began his relationship with Yamaha, programming for a wide range of their synthesizers through the years to the current Montage M. Acknowledged as one of the world's foremost FM synthesists and having extensive experience with physical modelling synthesis as well, his programming approach is to create unique and dynamic timbres with interesting yet useful real-time controller implementations.Rob Puricelli BiogRob Puricelli is a Music Technologist and Instructional Designer who has a healthy obsession with classic synthesizers and their history. In conjunction with former Fairlight Studio Manager, Peter Wielk, he fixes and restores Fairlight CMI's so that they can enjoy prolonged and productive lives with new owners. He also writes reviews and articles for Sound On Sound, his website Failed Muso, and other music-related publications, as well as hosting a weekly livestream on YouTube for the Pro Synth Network and guesting on numerous music technology podcasts and shows. He also works alongside a number of manufacturers, demonstrating their products and lecturing at various educational and vocational establishments about music technology.www.failedmuso.comTwitter: @failedmusoInstagram: @failedmusoFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/failedmuso/

And we're back with part 2 of John Grey's guide to gender essentialism, a horribly substantiated and poorly-reasoned guide to communicating with and loving your partner better.  Sure, we make fun of it, but we also realize it's had and will continue to have more of an impact on the world than anything we'll ever produce, so maybe we're just jealous? In this part we discuss some actually reasonable advice to how different sexes use language differently, some weirdly sexist advice regarding how men and women deal with stress, and some more horrible advice about people never being able to change their partner. We wrap it up by talking about research that's been done since the book was first published that undermines the whole gosh-darn premise and a quick prayer that John Grey never again picks up a pen to write. We strongly urge our listeners to support the work of Planned Parenthood by donating here. Patreon donations are sweet, but there are more important causes to support. SEX, ARE MEN FROM MARS AND WOMEN FROM VENUS? We are still talking about sexual intimacy. Today's focus is brilliantly described in the title of John Grey's well-known book – ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus'. In today's world, a trend is to claim that men and women are the same, but this is not true – yes, we are equal but definitely not the same! We constantly observe differences in men's and women's attitudes, needs and responses. This confirms the Scripture that declares that God created us ‘male' and ‘female'. We are different and distinct, and this is also true when it comes to sex! Understanding these differences is foundational in developing a healthy, mutual satisfying sex life. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. GENESIS 1:27 (NIV) When it comes to sex, we commonly observe differences between men and women in various areas. For example – our attitudes towards sex, for men sex is a high priority and it's physical, for women other priorities are higher and therefore sex is relational. Stimulation for men is body-centred (what they see, smell and do is important) but women are person-centred so they focus on touch, attitudes and words. Men want to feel that they are needed physically but women want to feel that they are needed emotionally. For men it is anytime, anywhere and orgasms are shorter and intense, while women need time, build-up and orgasms are longer, more in-depth. It is important to take note of this – but these differences are not concrete facts, there is no ‘ought to be‘. Use this knowledge in your marriage to understand each another better – but enjoy the fact that you are a unique couple, and you are God's perfect gift to one another.

Rethinking Practice at the Great Feast @INCITE Seminars Saturday, July 25th, 10am-2pm EST / 4-8pm Europe /3pm-7pm UK. Online via Zoom. Come and join us on the 25th at Incite Seminars for an original workshop on Buddhism at the Great Feast for Incite Seminars. Pay what you can and dive into this experimental event online through Zoom. Description below. Western Buddhism and spirituality more broadly provide us with a rich menu of practices, messages and visions of the human condition and what is possible and even desirable to do, avoid, and strive for within a human life. Yet, as many of us have come to realize, these practices, messages and curative fantasies do not always live up to expectation. The overly prescriptive ideals of what it means to be human, what practice is, and what we should be doing with it all too often reduce the Buddhist practitioner to the role of a passive performer of tradition and can lead to a loss of faith, disenchantment, and the feeling of having been conned. Can critique and disenchantment lead us to creatively reclaim our sense of ourselves apart from tradition, and discover new lines of inquiry, practice, and ways of relating? In this hands- and minds-on workshop, we will explore the possibilities of making a new relationship to Buddhist practice through the concept of the The Great Feast of Knowledge. This concept, articulated by Glenn Wallis, asks what happens when we invite any kind of thought, practice, insight or claim to exit its ideological bubble and interact with the great, vast planes of knowledge, human struggle, and discovery that sit outside the walls of its meaning-making apparatus? What might happen if we were to bring figures like the Scottish philosopher John Grey or the postmodern concept of hyperreality into our meditation practice? What would it mean to go on retreat with the ideas of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Martin Heidegger, or the work of Social Anthropologist Tim Ingold? A key idea from Francois Laurelle that will be useful to us here is the democracy of thought, which served as an inspiration for Wallis's Feast. Laurelle poses that all thought is equal, and for us that means that our own thought can participate at the feast if we can just muster up some courage. There is a price to pay, of course. You must expose your inner-world, and your private practice, your secret desires, needs, and fears, to the wider world and risk their disruption, and even destruction. Armed with epistemic humility and renewed curiosity, whatever happens, the Great Feast brings us back into the collective struggle of our species to come to terms with the human condition. This experimental and explorative workshop may serve to help those who are disillusioned by the whole project of Buddhism, or the spiritual, to find a way forward that remains critical but infuses personal practice with new life. Post-traditional and non-Buddhist tools will be explored initially, though we may manage to make some our own in the process. The Most Difficult Person You'll Ever Meet Episode // Dealing with Difficult People, Part 1

Christianityworks Official Podcast

Difficult people are everywhere in our lives. Absolutely everywhere. You just can't get away from them. So, unless we learn how to deal with difficult people, we are never going to have peace in our lives, we are never going to have joy in our lives and we are never, ever going to be able to share the love of Christ into this world. Learning to deal effectively with difficult people, is really, really important. It's vital. For me, the first step is saying, "I'm the most difficult person I will ever meet." I am with me 24/7, I am with me every minute of every day of every week of every month of every year for the rest of my life on this earth and Jesus is saying to me, Jesus is saying to you: Examine your own motives in the light of God's Word and in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Hi and welcome to The Couples Expert with your host Stuart Fensterheim. This is episode 183 of our show. Today Stuart is talking about sexual communication inside and outside of the bedroom. This episode is for couples in a long-term committed relationship, you are there for the long-haul.  This is one of the more difficult discussion for a couple to have, and Stuart will help to make it easier. Today's podcast contains adult material, so please use discretion when listening or use your headphones! Stuart and his wife are currently on vacation in New York city. They are visiting family, enjoy the culture and people watch, as well as visit the 9/11 museum. This is a time they they spend connecting and spending time together without the distractions. What you'll learn from today's podcast: Stop expecting your partner to read your mind [4:10] Your job is to keep your partner interested [6:30] When you want to talk about your sex life, don't do it when you want to engage in sex [9:10] Give your suggestions both verbally and non-verbally [10:45] Talk about your experience [14:00] Playfulness [15:30] What turns you on? [19:20] Communicate your needs [22:30] Most men are not interested in having quick sex [23:30] No need to fake an orgasm [24:45] Steps to have a conversation about sex [26:30] Sexopoly: https://www.amazon.com/Sexopoly-Adult-Board-Couples-Friends/dp/B0035ETLJY When you are ready to have a discussion with your partner about your sex life use these steps: Tell your partner how much you care about them. Give them a clear message about what is not working for you. Choose only one area to discuss at this time. Follow up with something positive. Talk about what works really well in your sex life. Suggest that you have the conversation again in the future. Talk about how much you love being intimate with them. Do not discuss how it went with other partners. This is only about what works for the two of you. You want to discuss this in kind and loving ways. You want to show and tell your partner what you need, to bring the two of you to a pleasurable place. Really make sure your partner knows that who they are is more important than anything else, and that you are lucky to have them in your life. The two of you can accomplish anything as long as you do it together. Deirdre Hade is a Modern Day Mystic. Dedicated to healing those who have suffered from trauma, pain, and loss, Deirdre founded the non profit organization The Foundation for Radiance which has worked closely with the Women's Prison Association of New York and Nuevo Amanecer (Sister Trinidad Lopez's program for women rescued from abuse and sexual slavery in East Los Angeles). She designed My Angel Pillow with Kellee White to bring the healing comfort of angels to children in hospitals all across the country. A keeper of the World Peace Flame and founding member of the Association for Transformational Leaders of Southern California, Deirdre is a member of Jack Canfield's Transformational Leadership Council, an organization of 150 world leaders in the field of personal transformation (including John Grey and Marianne Williamson). Deirdre's teachings on the Power of Meditation are featured alongside the writings of other modern-day spiritual luminaries such as Neale Donald Walsch and Don Miguel Ruiz. She has been honored by Dr. Iziz Fuqua and the Circles of Light, receiving the F.L.O.W.E.R. award for her pioneering work in energy healing. She has also been knighted by the Sovereign Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem for her humanitarian work. A profound sensitive and psychic, Deirdre headed off to college at 17, determined to get a degree in anthropology. A chance meeting with Joseph Campbell, American mythologist and author of Hero with a Thousand Faces changed the course of her life. “Don't go into anthropology,” he told her. “It will ruin your gift. You already have what we are all looking for.” That same auspicious year, Deirdre was given a photocopy of the then unknown book, A Course in Miracles. For months, she voraciously studied the texts. This, along with her mentors in the southern gospel churches, gave her innately scientific mind a spiritual foundation. (Her parents were research scientists in biochemistry and physiology). At 16 she and her mother had a spiritual awakening allowing her mother with terminal breast cancer to live 13 years longer than expected. This became the foundational work for Deirdre's Radiance Healing and Meditation System. Deirdre went on to have a successful dance career working with Robert Joffery, founder of The Joffery Ballet NYC, Frank Bourman of the Royal Ballet of England to name a few. She founded an inner city dance program for disadvantaged youth in the Memphis / Mid-South Region. Her Company, Celebrations of the Sacred, was a pioneer in the field of sacred dance. Deirdre's inner gifts and search for self-discovery brought her under the mentorship of elders and teachers in the mystical Christian tradition, the “I Am Presence” teachings, the Hindu Vedic tradition and Mussar and Lurianic Kabbalah, which she studied for over 20 years under the tutelage of two esteemed Rabbis in Los Angeles. Deirdre is overwhelmingly grateful to her mentor in personal psychology and women's' studies former head of USC Psychology dept. the late Dr. Lawanda Katzman Staenberg. In 2004 Deirdre founded Radiance Healing and Meditation now simply called The Radiance Journey, a system of energy healing and mystical wisdom from the ancient knowledge of the Kabbalah's Tree of Life. To date, Deirdre has given Radiance personal healing sessions and Radiance Journey Retreats to thousands at The Omega Institute, The ACADEMI of Life, Donna Karan's Urban Zen Center and Deepak Homebase in NYC, The Evolutionary Healing Institute in Miami, Florida, The Chopra Center at La Costa , Temple Hayes' First Unity Spiritual Campus, Canyon Ranch Resort and Montecito's own Sacred Space. In 2018 she will be a main presenter at the Kripalu Center in Stockbridge, Mass. Her Radiance Pure Energy Program for energetic clearing and healing has been sold in over 132 countries. Deirdre's coffee table gift book with photography by Endre Balogh, The (not so) Little Book of Surprises, released in 2016, was presented by Donna Karan to a standing-room-only audience at her Urban Zen Center in New York City. She has appeared on television and radio throughout the country, and her articles have been published in numerous journals, including Modern Mom, Mantra Magazine, LA Yoga, Wisdom Magazine, RewireMe, BeliefNet and Light of Consciousness Magazine. She and her husband William Arntz, creator of the seminal film, “What the Bleep do We Know!?,” have created The Mystic and the Physicist: An Exploration into the Vanishing Point Where Science and Spirituality Meet presented to standing room only at ABC Home Deepak Homebase, NYC. The mother of two children, Leilah Katherine Franklin and Eric Harel Franklin, (“The two greatest accomplishments of my life!”), in 2014 Deirdre married her great love, William Arntz. Today they live happily ever after in Montecito, California. Drums of Autumn Week 1 Chapter 1 Before we begin, we left off Voyager with Claire and Jamie et al. find themselves blown off course and landing in Georgia. Claire had suffered a broken leg. Duncan Innes, Fergus, and Young Ian were with Claire and Jamie. Marsali is in Jamaica pregnant and waiting for the birth of their baby. John Grey is the Governor of Jamaica. The Porpoise sunk during the harrowing storm as it followed the Artemis. Yi Tien Cho stayed on Jamaica. Archibald Campbell was the fiend and murdered the woman YTC was accused of murdering. He is dead. Geillis is dead at the hand of Claire after she and Jamie found her in the cave at Abandawe where she was set to sacrifice Young Ian to go back to the future to have the prophecy fulfilled through Jamie's line. Summary: They are in the New World. Claire is recovered. It's hot and muggy in Charleston. A friend is hanged. A prisoner escapes. Young Ian stays put. A fur friend is procured. Ale all around. A lament is sung. Plans are made. Claire wants a bath. Jamie is the leader and protector. They need to bury the body, then go north. Chapter 1 A Hanging in Eden Charleston, June 1767 They are in Charleston, South Carolina. As indicated by the title of the book and the opening line to this chapter, drums are an important theme. It's a hot day and men will be hanged. It is crowded with spectators. A friend of Jamie's from Ardsmuir Gavin Hayes was among those set to hang. He was mightily drunk per Jamie's help. He stole 6 pounds 6 shillings worth and would die for it. That's about $1072 in American dollars today. Can you imagine losing your life for a $1000? When Gavin was hung, Jamie made sure he saw him and was comforted by his presence. A loyal friend is Jamie Fraser. Claire and Fergus watched the hanging too. It's not a pretty business. It's not efficient whether or not the hangman knows his job. One of the other prisoners makes a break for it. All hell breaks loose, and he seems to get away. They escape the chaos to find Young Ian. Fergus is told to claim Gavin's body. The Merry Fraser band is rounded out by Duncan Innes being alongside. Jamie expects to be sending Young Ian back to Scotland as he promised his sister Jenny and Ian. He's concerned about their money. Claire cleverly sewed her pocket shut, and Jamie is hiding his portion in his pants. Hopefully, no tart of a harlot tries to pick his breaks. Young Ian finds them, and he's exceedingly happy. Jamie intent on getting Young Ian passage to Scotland heads with everyone in tow toward the docks. He attracts attention from the ladies along the way. He's mindful of his extra package. Turning gems into money was difficult. They were wealthy on paper and functionally poor. The atmosphere was stuffy, hot, windless, and filled with all sorts of the stench. The Olivier's who had helped them after the shipwreck gave them modest transportation and provisions for their trip to South Carolina. It turns out Young Ian has been playing dice and winning. He also has procured a rather wolfish dog named Rollo. Jamie playing animal whisperer makes acquaintance with the beast. Ian has it all sussed – the dog hunts for himself. Jamie doesn't think the captain of the ship he intended to send Young Ian home on would want a dog aboard. Looking all too happy turns out the ship left three days prior.  Jamie is worried what Jenny will say. Off to a tavern they go. Jamie needs a drink. Making plans stay and try to sell a stone and secure alternate passage or head north to Cape Fear, NC where Jamie has family relations. Young Ian thinks it's grand to go north – he can help be of protection – the boy who trouble finds. In his excitement, he names all the things he hopes to meet – Indians, bears, panthers, and the foul creature – the skunk. In this unfamiliar place, Jamie is very worried about being able to protect themselves against whomever and whatever they come across. It's wild and much untamed. He knows people tell stories and they might be fodder for conversation. Word could be out about the gems. He's acting as leader of his wee clan of people. They would feel safer in Cape Fear because of the large Scottish Highlander settlement. Claire can only think about bathing and removing the clothing she's been wearing in that scorching heat and sleeping rough in for eight days. Soldiers come into the pub no doubt searching for the escaped prisoner. Jamie and Duncan were ill at ease with it. Jamie's tell is a hand curling into a fist or tapping with his fingers. Fergus arrives aggravated. He's unhappy with how much the priest/pastor wants to charge to bury Gavin. He's such one for the insult. It's hilarious. They have very little money, and that would put them too near pennilessness. A rag woman made a bargain with Fergus to take the clothing and wash the body. He's in the cart waiting to for burial. Duncan is on his way to drunkenness. Poor Gavin. Slainte. They discuss where to bury Gavin since the priest wants too much money. The wood will not do. They go on to tell a lengthy story of a night Gavin came across a spirit while looking for an escaped cow. He was mortally afraid of the dark ever after. Until he left home to follow the Bonnie Prince, he never went out after dark. The cow was waiting outside the croft in the morning looking as if she'd been ridden to hell and back. Gavin never knew what happened to his wife or son after Culloden. His son had been on the field next to him when the fighting started. Even with lists kept it would be impossible to find any other existing transported family or those who may be alive in Scotland. They made the point it might be best to never know for certain what happened to your child, hope could remain. Jamie and Claire knew Brianna was safe and sound in the 20th century. They had that between them. With Rollo lying under the table the serving maid was careful to avoid him.  Duncan is drunk and grieving Gavin. Duncan decides they will indeed sing a lament for the man. The taproom responds to his opening notes with near violence until they realize he is singing. Even the dog lets out a woof. He sings the lament in Gaelic. The other tables joined into the chorus – realizing violence wouldn't happen – but they didn't know Duncan was saying disparaging things. Fergus savvy as ever took a hat to pass around, and the drunken patrons filled it with many coins. Claire went out to relieve her bladder and spied the cart – seeing an outline of a body she presumed it to be Gavin. She hoped he'd enjoyed the lament. Claire heard a familiar tune coming from inside the taproom – The Anacreon Song which was written sometime in 1770 -1771, 3-4 years after the year in the book. It's a drinking song – the tune was used for the Star-Spangled Banner. This opening chapter sets the tone for life in the new world. The weather is hot; there's not much money in circulation to exchange gemstones with, they are outsiders, it's unfamiliar and potentially dangerous from gossip and all the wild things of the vast wilderness. Jamie is reasserting himself as the leader. Young Ian is staying at least for a little while. Fergus is the faithful if salty sidekick. Marsali is in Jamaica waiting for the baby to be born. Claire is recovered from her broken leg. They have to start over yet again. Jamie and Claire as a recommitted couple stepping into their future. Though near penniless, Jamie's aunt should be able to assist them. Our guest, Anna Rova I am very excited to be joined here today by Anna Rova, who is a fellow podcaster, writer and entrepreneur. And among other cool things, Anna has some very interesting insights on relationships. She has interviewed all kinds of people about this topic, from porn stars to John Gray who is the author of the bestseller Men Are from Mars, Women Are From Venus. Anna has also done lots of other magical things, including Ayahuasca which she'll talk about a bit later. So Anna welcome to the Clean Food, Dirty Stories podcast! I'm really excited to have you here today! Anna: Thanks for having me! I'm so excited too! Beginning to travel the world with a one-way ticket Me: Now I know that you basically travel the world writing and doing other amazing things, and I would really love for us to start by having you tell everybody how you came to become a digital nomad. Anna: OK, well that's an easy subject to start with. I became a digital nomad about 2 years ago. Last year around May I started travelling full time, and I was in Malaysia working for a company called MindValley who make personal growth products. I did online marketing there and I got exposed to the digital nomads out there and one day I was like "Oh my God, I don't need to be in an office, I can be anywhere and do my work". So I was over my Malaysia chapter and I booked a one-way ticket to Bangkok. I had a friend there, I went to a wedding there. And then after a week in Bangkok I booked a ticket to an island, got an apartment, taught myself how to ride a scooter and that was it! And the rest is history! It's such a journey, I've travelled all over the world, I've lived in more than 15 countries in the last 2 years. Just ask me what you want to know more about! When in doubt, teach yourself Me: I love how you taught yourself how to ride a scooter, I mean, was that just trial and error? Did you just fall off and then get back on? Anna: I think that was the scariest shit ever in my life because overall I think I had that summer 3 accidents on the motorbike and that's unavoidable. When I was renting an apartment, I had to get around. And for anyone who's been to Thailand, besides Bangkok, the only way to get around is by motorbike. I was scared to death to ride it, I didn't have a driver's license and I thought "I suppose I'm just gonna do it!" But I learned how to balance it in the right way, and that's it. So I went on the street and in the first 3 minutes I realized I was gonna be out of gas, and I was like 'shit what am I gonna do' and you know, I just did it. In 2 months I was pretty much like a pro. I loved it, I loved the freedom of going wherever I wanted. An easy way to transition from full-time work to digital nomad Me: At that point were you writing articles? Anna: Well no, I have an interesting story because for me it wasn't like quitting everything and then doing my business. It was good because this transition from having a full-time job in an office to a digital nomad lifestyle with remote work can be a really hard one. I think a lot of people aren't prepared, they think it's easy. But I negotiated to basically start working remotely for the same company. I had a full-time job and I didn't need to be in an office, so that was for about half a year so it really helped me to have stability for the first 6 months, somebody out there waiting for me to show up and do my work. The rest was so unstable, you didn't know what's going to happen tomorrow, where you'd be, it was crazy. So that was great and I wasn't ready yet to jump into my full-on entrepreneurship journey. But I actually found another job with a company that's in the same industry and I signed a contract for another year to work full-time remotely doing online marketing which was great. I negotiated like a double salary and it was awesome! Another one-way ticket...to Colombia I booked my one-way ticket to Colombia and you know, Latin America was a continent that was always in my dreams. But after a year I came back to this feeling that I'm an entrepreneur, you know? I need to do my own thing, I have so much in me to write, to say, to discover the world, to teach. So I quit the job this January just 3 months ago and I went on this 90-day Wanderova journey and I thought I'm just gonna write about it, and it was incredible! In two months of writing on Medium I got to top writer in Travel, top writer in Relationships, I got published by a publication, I'm building my own business, I coached a couple of people. Becoming a relationship expert Me: So then that was my next question actually, because we'll link to Medium in the show notes and then people can read about the posts that you were writing when you were travelling. But I'm curious to know how you then started to write about relationships and how you got to interview porn stars and John Gray? Talk about a mixture! Anna: So actually that project, my expertise in relationships started way before I became a digital nomad. This is also a sign for me when I look back I realize that I was always entrepreneurial. I just didn't fully realize it consciously. From MindValley to John Gray While I had my full-time job in Malaysia, some of you might know that MindValley is such a creative, entrepreneurial place. And I started my podcast in 2014. At that time I had just broke up with my boyfriend. We were almost engaged and all of that but I said I don't want that. I didn't know anything about relationships but I was into podcasting and I just said "I'm going to start my own podcast where I'm going to interview men about relationships to figure it all out". And you know, it was such a journey, I did the project for two years. In these two years I got a chance to interview 43 amazing men all about women and relationships. I asked them all kinds of questions, and yes I interviewed John Gray. He wrote 17 books on relationships and you know, he's a famous writer and speaker, men go to their cave and whatever. I was shocked myself when he decided to say yes and have an interview with me. Enter the porn star I interviewed porn stars. It's actually a funny story because after my interview with a porn star, his name was I think John Logan. A couple of weeks later I was doing my self satisfaction moment in bed and then I saw the guy in a porn video in like a threesome and I was like "Oh my God I can't watch this! I interviewed him on my podcast!" But yeah, I interviewed all kinds of men from all kinds of nationalities, all kinds of walks of life. And I just asked them what do they find attractive in a woman and all of that. Me: And what kind of things came out? What are some of the common things that men seem to say about what makes women attractive? Anna: Oh this is such a huge subject! Me: Maybe two or three little things. Anna: I actually learned a lot, not only from them, but I read a lot, I researched the subject. And I became a totally different woman. It was a journey to discover men, but at the same time it was more of a journey of discovering myself and what I think about men, what I think about relationships, what I think about women. The first thing Anna learned about men A lot of shit came up that were limiting beliefs, patterns from my childhood, whatever. So one of the things that I love to tell everyone, and women especially, is that we have this notion that men are something based on what we've seen in our life. But I absolutely believe 100% in the good of men: I love men, I love their masculinity, their polarity. And I started appreciating men. I realized what they have to go through to even talk to a woman, you know? Like I never thought about it. Men go through their puberty and they just start Googling things and talking to other men about how to get women. We as women, I mean I don't want to generalize but a lot of women are so bitchy to men and so down on men and "oh they just want to get into my pants" and I just went inside and realized who they're raised by and how they're going through all of this process. First I'd say that I just got to understand and appreciate men, which was my mission. I realized that it's a journey for all of us. Anna's biggest learning The other thing that I realized is that I dug deep and this is all about patterns and limiting beliefs that come from my family and my childhood and my culture and what I've seen. And I realized that I was attracting all of these emotionally unavailable men because I myself was emotionally unavailable. So my second tip and my biggest learning is that our partners or the men that we attract as women are a direct reflection of us. If we attract someone that doesn't call us back or whatever, that means that we ourselves are unavailable. And it's really hard to realize cause you're like "But I want love! I want a relationship!" But you're just not ready. That's what I tell all of my girlfriends when they ask me. If you're attracting super needy men there's a lot of deep, deep work in there. So that's the second thing. The third thing: we're working with broken tools And the third thing I'd say is that I just realized I never saw growing up a healthy model of how relationships should be. I come from a small Eastern European country, my mother passed away when I was 8 years old, and my dad after that remarried a couple of times. Well, once he remarried, but there were many women in his life and there was a stepmother, there was an evil bitch there, I mean I have a crazy story. Basically I just didn't see healthy relationships where men loved their women, women loved their men and they had healthy relationships where they're partners. They're not like "Oh my God, you're my other half" and like "Save me" and "Heal all my wounds". I guess one of the biggest realizations was that I just realized that our modern notion of love and relationships is completely broken. We just expect the other person to come in and "Make me happy, heal my wounds". It just doesn't work. A healthy relationship today, and still travelling! Today I'm engaged to my man, but I always make sure that this is me, and my shit is like my shit and I need to work on me constantly. Even when I'm getting married. I'm like "this is his own shit, this is my shit". We're together in this, and we're choosing each other every day and you know, we're not dependent on each other emotionally. At least I hope we're not. Me: You know, I like that phrase 'choosing each other every day', that's really quite cool. Yeah. Anna: Yeah. So I believe that really helped me and you know, I just became emotionally independent and that's how I met my man currently and that's how he proposed 9 months after we met. We're having a wedding in Moldova in my country and it's so beautiful and flowery but there was a lot of work behind it. I went through a lot of stuff. So that's the story. Anna's Ayahuasca journey Me: So when I was reading your blog and the stories of your travels, I just zeroed in on your Ayahuasca story. I was like "I have got to read this!" because I've always wanted to try it and I haven't had the opportunity yet and I know that I will. But for the benefit of anyone listening that doesn't know anything about it, can you just tell us really briefly like what it is, and also how you came to be taking it and what happened? What Ayahuasca is Anna: Ayahuasca is very common among travellers because full-time travellers have a certain character, they're adventurous, so they often know about Ayahuasca. But people who don't travel that much, they're like 'what the hell is that'. So Ayahuasca is something that I heard about a couple of years ago that somebody did it, and it was such an amazing experience. Life-transformation and whatever. I thought "I've gotta do it, I've got to have it on my bucket list!" Me: Cause it's a herb, right? You take it as a tea? Anna: Yeah, so what it is...There's a lot of controversy out there. Scientists have done research and experiments on what ayahuasca does and its effects. But basically it's a herb, it's a medicinal plant that's found in the Amazon so in the Brazilian part in Peru. How you use Ayahuasca...the right way It's mostly in Peru, people go there to have this experience. Ayahuasca's a psychedelic plant. But the difference between all the psychedelic drugs out there, MDMA etc, I mean I haven't done any of that by the way. They call Ayahuasca a medicinal plant and a life transformation experience because it's a shamanic ceremony. So it's not like you go into a club and eat a plant or a mushroom. There's a ceremony, there's a shaman who guides people through. It's a very serious experience, it's an adventure. You've got to be ready to do it and there are so many positive stories around it. People are realizing their life purpose or whatever. And there are also bad stories around it, that people have horrible experiences. What they say that ayahuasca does is that if you look at the research it's actually used as a treatment for drug addicts for example, and people who are lost and want to see but they can't see. So it affects some parts of your brain that are responsible for emotional memories. What Ayahuasca can show you That's why it's healing. It's a healing experience in a way. They say that ayahuasca will show you what you need to see. So I wrote this post, there are two parts. One of them is where you count down... Me: That's the one I read. I haven't read part 2 and I was like "What happens?" Anna: Yes I describe how I felt before, and I was like pushing away the fear and then 48 hours before, an hour before...I was really scared because I didn't know what the hell was gonna happen. What Ayahuasca does So basically it's a liquid tea, they call it Ayahuasca tea. You drink it and maybe in like 20 minutes it starts coming to you. And then basically after that you fall into a state of deep dream and you start seeing psychedelic things for like 5 hours. Me: Wow! 5 hours! Anna: Yes, it's really intense. Me: But you don't see the time go by, I would imagine, right? Anna: Yes, it's totally, well not out of body, I wouldn't know how to describe it. Me: Well it's like when we dream, we're in a completely different state of consciousness, right? And so time doesn't have the same meaning. Anna: Exactly, yeah. And I was aware of what was happening but I was deeply into it. I put it all out there in part 2 for readers to read, but every experience is different. Our group had a really good experience. We did it during the day. We were in a very safe environment which is very important. But I've heard stories of not having a great experience, so it really depends where you are in life, how ready you are, and how much of a control freak you are. A lot of people who didn't have a good experience tried to control it. And you just can't do that. You've gotta work on just letting it go, letting it do its job and all that. Anna's main takeaway from her Ayahuasca journey I'm really happy I did it. It still has its effects on me up until today and I think it always will. I plan to do it again and I'm actually still processing it. I'm really glad I did it. It was powerful. Me: What was the main thing that it gave to you? I mean, if you had to pick one thing, what would that be? Anna: Well I think it's two things. First of all, there's a feeling of oneness. Oneness with the world, with nature, with people. And at the end of it you just feel bliss. Our shaman explained that when you do Ayahuasca, you're at a very high rate of vibration which is actually the human natural state of vibration. I totally believe that we are here to enjoy life. We are here to be happy and to be on that really high vibration. I just felt this feeling of oneness. I felt like whatever I have to do at home, like "Oh I have to do a podcast?" Whatever I have to do, it doesn't really matter. It's like humans we complicate it so much. I felt that before through travelling, but this was a really intense feeling. On top of that... The second thing is that I just look at life as a game. It's all a game! Me: Yes! Totally! Anna: We just complicate things so much but if you just let things flow and be in the game, nobody knows what the fuck they're doing anyway! Me: I tell myself that a lot. I do! It's a game! It was like today because you know, for me, I'm super excited because you're like my first podcast guest, right? Yay! Anna: Yay! Me: And so you know this morning, of course you get a bit nervous. Because I'm using different technology for the first time and all that, and I'm like "You know what? So what!" It's a game as you say, and we're having fun and learning and exploring. Where to find out more about Anna So you've done so many cool things and I know you have a lot to share with listeners. Where do people go if they want to find out more and read about you and read more about your journey? Anna's writings Anna: Well first of all I send everybody to Medium. So if they go to www.Medium.com/@wanderova, this is my profile and I'm writing everything there. I'd say there are three different topics I write about which are travel, relationships and life. But travel not in the sense that I'm not a travel blogger. I don't write about 'ten things to do here and here', I don't care about that. I mostly write about personal growth and self development and my thoughts. My angry thoughts...and so if they like what they're reading I also love to send people to wanderova.com. It's my website and you can sign up to get updates and whenever I create something I'll just send you an email telling you how things are and just sharing my thoughts and stuff. I'm building a business and a lot of things are coming up. But I'd say that, yeah, read my Medium stuff and if you like it then go and subscribe at wanderova.com and we'll have a conversation about life and purpose and travels, yeah. Anna's podcast Me: And your podcast as well, that can be found where? Anna: Well, as I said the podcast isn't active yet but people can listen to it. My previous website is meninsideshow.com or they can find the actual episodes on SoundCloud and type 'meninsideshow' and you can listen to all these different interviews with men. There's a lot of deep, cool stuff because men get very vulnerable. That's what I realized, they're not like robotic machines that don't have feelings. They've been taught to have this image but their world is as intense and as deep as ours. It's just a different polarity but it's powerful. Me: Super! So I'll link to all of those in the show notes for people. Anna, thank you so, so much. I really love your stories. And I for one am definitely going to listen to those podcast episodes. A super mushroom for your own magical brew Now I did mention at the beginning of this episode that I'd share with you what mushroom you can use to make your own magical brew at home. Now I can't promise you it will take you on a magical journey, but it's a great coffee substitute. The mushroom is reishi. Now before you freak out and think where the hell am I gonna get reishi, you can easily get it on Amazon. Benefits of reishi mushroom Reishi mushroom not only makes a great drink, but it's an adaptogen. What that means is that it helps us deal with stress. So super important, right? Reishi also helps keep your blood sugar stable, and it's great for both your immune system and your lymph system. On top of that, reishi is said to be able to help defend against tumor growth, improve liver function, balance your hormones as well as help fight diabetes, allergies and asthma. So you really want to be getting yourself some reishi. I'll link to a very informative article in the show notes as well if you want to get more in-depth scientific knowledge about reishi. How to use reishi mushroom As to how you use it, well, if you've got pieces of reishi, you brew them. You make a tea. If you've got the powder, you just tip the powder into your blender with some warm water. Then you blend your reishi brew with cacao powder and a handful of cashews for a super delicious mocha. Or you can make my coffee substitute which I'll link to in the show notes. So I hope you've enjoyed our tales of magical journeys and brews! And if you try some reishi (or ayahuasca, for that matter), let me know in the comments! Have YOU got a story to share? If you've got a crazy, true story to share - with or without magic mushrooms! - and you'd like to know what food could have saved the day in your situation), I'd love to hear from you! Got a question, or a comment? Got a question, or a comment? Pop a note below in the comments, that would be awesome. You can also subscribe to the podcast to listen 'on the go' in iTunes, Stitcher or Tunein. I hope you have an amazing day.
