“Sometimes you just need an advocate to kick you in the pants.” Sarah Lesko just might be one of the most-loved women in the running industry. As the leader of corporate development for Oiselle, Sarah — or "Lesko," as most call her — is beloved by her colleagues, by Oiselle's elite athletes, and by the hundreds of members of the Volée team. So what is about Lesko that makes people so drawn to her? After hearing about Oiselle from countless women on this show — Lauren Fleshman, Sally Bergesen, Alison Mariella Désir, Rebecca Mehra, Kara Goucher, Courtney Carter — it's time to hear from Lesko herself! On this episode, Sarah talks about growing up on a commune, going to (and running for) Yale, and becoming a doctor. She talks about the health issue that forced her to take an 18-year break from running, and explains what drew her back in and got her on the run again. She talks about having kids (she's a mom to three boys) while in her medical residency, and about life as a mom and family medicine doctor. And she talks about her decision to leave the medical industry in 2015 to work for Oiselle. Today, Sarah manages Oiselle's philanthropic efforts, its Bras For Girls program, and the elite team. In this conversation, she reflects on helping grow the brand, including the initiatives she's proudest of, and the missteps along the way. Plus, she talks about why, at 52, she's proud to be "faster as a master." SPONSOR: AfterShokz — Visit ontherun.aftershokz.com for 15% off wireless headphones. We are excited to wrap up this series for Women's History Month by interviewing Sally Bergesen, the Founder and CEO of Oiselle. Sally Bergesen founded Oiselle in 2007 and since then has been making both better apparel and big waves in the sport of running. In this interview with Kara and Chris, you will hear about her childhood growing up in Berkeley, CA as a self-proclaimed troublemaker including one funny example of challenging authority in her home economics class. From there, she discusses her parallel journey as a runner and on the road to founding Oiselle, where she has had a big impact as an advocate for women and for a better sport for future generations. We talk about sports governance, #dreammaternity (and Oiselle's role modeling there since 2013), and particularly what brands can do to advocate for clean sport. Sally was a troublemaker as a child and is now a troublemaker (in a good way) in our sport. We can't thank her enough for her fearless leadership to promote positive change.

Today on the Extra Mile I'm thrilled to share an interview I did with someone who I've admired for a very long time, Founder and CEO of Oiselle, Sally Bergesen.  Oiselle is is a Seattle-based by women, for women athletic apparel company. They have some things for men, too, and I love my Oiselle t-shirt and hat. But more importantly, they are a brand, and Sally is an entrepreneur that I truly look up to. Oiselle's mission is three-fold: make a great product, improve the sport, and build the sisterhood. I really admire how they have built their community.  I was in beautiful Seattle, WA to visit family and thought I'd reach out to Sally to see if she might go on a run with me and along the way share some of her wisdom with us.  I'm so grateful that she was able and willing to chat with me as well as take us on one of the most spectacular runs I've ever been on, on the shores of Lake Washington. It was absolutely stunning!   #EveryMileMatters #RunLoveWins Get your Oiselle gear here. Follow Oiselle's blog here. Follow Oiselle on Instagram here.

Sally Bergesen, the founder of Oiselle, fell in love with running in college but couldn’t find the kind of running clothes she wanted to wear, so she created her own company. As she learned more about women and their relationship with clothing, she started diving deeper into the history of women’s athletic apparel. Sensi Graves is a kiteboarder, who created a swimsuit company with suits that could keep up with athletes on the water, stay in place, look good, and be produced in a sustainable way.

Today’s guest is someone that might surprise you. Ten years ago it would have surprised me that I reached out to her. Her name is Sally Bergesen and she’s the founder of women’s athletic wear brand Oiselle. Turns out she is a naming expert and the more a name stands out the more people will remember it. I am not a naming expert which is why so many people call my company sport skirts! But that’s another story! Over the years, I have watched what Sally has done with her brand and I started to feel a kinship to her because she is relentless in her quest to do the right thing. Even if it makes her look a little wild or rash sometimes. Her underlying mission is to help women and she does it every single day through her work with Oiselle. Why would I want to help promote a woman who makes clothing that theoretically competes with Skirt? Why wouldn’t I is the question I now ask myself. If you fall in love with Oiselle or Skirt or any other brand that helps you get out the door and make your life happier, then I’m thrilled for you! For all the work we do in this world of online business, I will admit that we had a few technical challenges with our connection so don’t worry if there are a few extra long pauses. We didn’t get disconnected. I will also admit that when there are long pauses, I often talk more and I am sorry that I occasionally kept talking when Sally was trying to chime in! So the interview wasn’t technically perfect, but you know, that’s life. It’s not perfect. Sometimes we talk when we should shut up! When I confirmed that Sally wanted to come on the show, I thought about what I would like to learn about her. I’ve listened to countless interviews with Sally, most of which focus on the things she does, but few focus on how she became the person she is today. Strong, resolved, with a very clear and unflappable opinion of right and wrong. Willing to put herself on the line to defend that opinion. Driven to connect and create community. A very deep thinker who isn’t afraid to take on a challenge. So we dig into the foundation and build from there. I’m really happy to call Sally a friend. For a while, I thought of her as a threat, later a competitor, and now a peer. Our missions are not exactly the same but the drive behind them is aligned. We both want to help women find happiness through the transformative power of sport. Today we talk about: Sally's life buckets: Work, Family, Sport Sally's early years growing up a "free range" child in Berkeley, CA Smoking and Drinking and meeting her husband Running: How it saved her life Starting Oiselle Ego What being a mom means to her What Sally would do if Oiselle was gone tomorrow At the end of the interview, Sally mentions "the craft brewers." What you didn’t get to hear was our first attempt at an interview when we talked about why we haven’t nurtured a relationship with each other when there are so few peers in our athletic apparel world. I told her about some of my friends who started craft beer brands. Instead of ferociously competing against each other, they would organize bike rides from Boulder to Durango and then hang out and drink each other’s beer. We both decided that we want to be like the craft brewers, minus the drinking part. What you also don’t know is that after we stopped the recording we continued to talk about other more personal things like our tumultuous relationships with alcohol, dealing with petty lawsuits, challenges with manufacturers and more. We decided that we want to do a follow up interview called “the things we didn’t say the first time” – and we will next spring. So look out for that! In the meantime, check out Oiselle oiselle.com – they make running and athletic apparel for women. They have build an incredible community. They support women. And I support them because in the end, lifting and elevating women will help us all.

Do you ever notice that at particular topics seem to keep coming up over and over? Maybe it's because Mothers' Day is coming up, but mother guilt has been coming up a lot lately. There was a great discussion about it on twitter here which I put my two cents in on, but I found I had more to say too. Okay running moms, I need your input: imagine you're at home with your baby, feeling a little stir crazy, and a voice tells you that you shouldn't run. That it's selfish and time consuming. What would you say to that voice? How would you counter? — Sally Bergesen (@oiselle_sally) April 30, 2018 So in this episode of the podcast, I'm talking all about the guilt and why I think it's so important to take a closer look at it.

It’s been a big few years for professional runner and Olympian Kate Grace. In 2016, the Yale graduate won the Olympic Trials in the 800-meter event in Eugene, OR, and went on to represent Team USA in Rio, where she finished eighth. She chased that with a personal best in the 800 meters in Zurich, running a 1:59.47. A few months later, Kate's contract with Oiselle, her sponsor of four years and her first major professional sponsor, was up, and she announced her decision to join Nike, the industry behemoth despised by many at Oiselle. Then, this past fall, Kate officially joined Portland, OR-based Bowerman Track Club, where she now trains alongside some of professional running’s greatest, fastest women, including Shalane Flanagan, Amy Cragg, and Emily Infeld, and is coached by Jerry Schumacher. On this episode, Kate lets us all inside the head of a hardworking athlete and Olympian. She shares what it’s like training with some of the fastest women in the world, and talks about the “not glamorous” parts of racing. She explains her recent sponsorship decisions, breaks down how to master the 800m, and talks about why the 800-meter race at the Trials was “a shitshow.” Plus, Kate shares what it’s like competing at the Oympics — and what the athlete’s village is really like — and talks about how to deal with injuries, her fitness-world-famous mom, the comeback she’s hoping for this February, and what’s next. By now you have probably heard of Oiselle, the running apparel brand for women, changing the running world through sharing their journey of vulnerability and openness, and celebrating the whole athlete, rather than just their athletic performance. With athletes like Kara Goucher, Lauren Fleshman, and Stephanie Bruce proudly wearing their clothes, Oiselle is determined to show that success is so much more than medals, podiums, and rankings, for every runner. Sally talks about how running saved her life in many ways, and how our communities and friendships can make all the difference to how confident we are as people.  She tells us why she chose the name Oiselle, and I even ask whether it was worth the confusion of many people becoming confused by the word. We also get to hear the story of how Sally enticed Lauren Fleshman into their brand...and how the team responded when they knew Lauren had bought in (you will love their reaction!).  Sally understands that running with joy is about the feeling of freedom and flight. When you are on a run, the ability to be present in moment and have our bodies taking us through the world is the most beautiful thing, and something only runners will understand. We talk openly about the broken relationship between USATF and Nike (and how this partnership is locked in till 2040!!). You will learn many things otherwise untold about the dark side of running, and then how you can make a difference in your world, with the decisions you make to improve the running industry by helping with causes that are meaningful to you.
