"That's been a big part of the change and growth. The lesson is trusting yourself and not being afraid to figure out what works for you, even if that's different than someone else." She'll race the 800, the 1500, the mile, the 5K, the 10K...and in this conversation, Elise Cranny even hints at a possible marathon someday. Elise returns to the Ali on the Run Show to catch up on life since becoming a two-time Olympian (2020 and 2024). She talks about a lot of change: from Portland-based Bowerman Track Club and coach Jerry Schumacher, to Boulder-based Team Boss and coach Joe Bosshard, to now, training in Flagstaff, being coached by NAU's Jarred Cornfield, and taking a break from the team atmosphere. She explains why she made certain changes in an Olympic year, and talks about how she's feeling now, both physically and mentally. "I needed to have the year I had to really give me the push to make the changes I made." In 2022, Sinclaire Johnson cemented her spot as a middle-distance rising star when she broke the women's 1500m tape at the U.S. National Championships. Since then, the Nike-sponsored athlete has made a lot of changes on the run. She transitioned from Jerry Schumacher's Bowerman Track Club to Union Athletics Club, where she was coached by Pete Julian. Last year — a year when she finished fourth in the 1500m at the Olympic Track & Field Trials — Sinclaire knew it was time to change it up again, this time opting to forgo a team environment and be coached by her fiancé, Craig Nowak. Now, with a fresh 3:56 1500m PR from the 2024 Trials, Sinclaire is in the middle of her indoor season. She ran a personal best in the mile (4:23.58) at New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, where she finished third, and then finished sixth in the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York City. This weekend, Sinclaire will race at U.S. Indoor Nationals. The final episode of 2024. This conversation is an inside-look at the inner-workings of The Running Effect in 2024. I share things publically for the first time about the inner workings of the podcast/business and some of the biggest ups and downs of 2024. It's an in-depth conversation with my mentor, Alex Ostberg who has graced this platform more times than I can count at this point. If you're not familiar with Alex, he is a seven-time All-American who holds PRs of 3:58 in the Mile, 7:49 in the 3k, and 13:18 in the 5k. He has a Bachelor's Degree in human biology, a minor in psychology, and a master's in public health. Alex graduated from Stanford before getting his masters from the University of North Carolina. Earlier this year, Alex accepted a position as an Assistant Coach at Nike's Bowerman Track Club. The first half of this conversation is dedicated to a recap of 2024 for The Running Effect, and the back half is a back-and-forth between Alex and me on our three biggest lessons/insights from the year. One email I sent five years ago changed the trajectory of my life. It was an email to Alex Ostberg, a Stanford student-athlete at the time. Alex quickly became a mentor to me and that drastically changed the outcomes in my life and heavily affected me startingThe Running Effect. Today's conversation centers around mentorship, the importance of a mentor, where to find a mentor, and many other subjects, including the power of saying "yes" when you're young, embracing serendipity, and recognizing the unexpected value in opportunities that might feel random at first. We also dive into why doubling down on what works and avoiding mistakes is a smarter strategy than constantly seeking brilliance or novelty, along with many, many other points and quotes! "Sometimes you need to just shut your brain off and run." At this time last year, Karissa Schweizer was undergoing foot surgery. Then, as she mounted her comeback heading into an Olympic year, she faced another setback: a femoral stress fracture. But as we know, the comeback is always greater than the setback, and Karissa proved that by racing both the 5000m and the 10,000m at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team Trials on her home turf at Hayward Field in Eugene, OR, making the team in both distances. She went on to finish in the top 10 in both events at the Paris Olympic Games. Karissa's season didn't end there: She went on to race the 5000m at the Zurich Diamond League, she raced (and won!) the Fifth Avenue Mile, and she ran a season's best in the 5000m at the Diamond League Final in Brussels. Mike Scannell coached Grant Fisher to two bronze medals (5000 and 10,000 meters) in the Paris Olympics--a feat no American runner had achieved previously. Which brings up a good question: Who is Mike Scannell? Turns out he is a forever-friend of Grant Fisher's family, and coached Fisher to 2 Footlocker XC Championships victories back when Fisher was a Michigan high schooler. Then he sat back and watched Fisher run 4 years at Stanford, and 4 years with the Bowerman Track Club. A year ago, Fisher called Scannell to say he was ready for a change of location and coaching. He moved to Park City, UT, and Scannell wrote up a training plan for the long pre-Paris buildup. In this Pod, Scannell sketches his personal background in running (2:16 marathon!), and describes how he and Fisher designed their successful Olympic plan. Some major topics: # Scannell's 4 key workouts for every training week # How to build speed with a minimal amount of speedwork # What Scannell thinks of Fisher's marathon potential # Can Jakob Ingebrigtsen be beaten at 5000 meters? # The current state of American running And much more. On X.com, Scannell posts a daily motivational tip. Here's a great recent one: "We always save something for ‘another day.' That's in part why I don't do, ‘last one, fast one.' The other reason is that I don't want kids to ‘fail' in practice, and running all out means you run until your body fails. I like kids to walk away with success on the brain." Formerly anonymous Arizona high school running coach Mike Scannell has become a sensation in the American distance running community with the amazing success of his runner Grant Fisher, the undisputed king of American long distance running! Grant had a sensational Paris Olympic Games, winning bronze medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. These are events where only a handful of Americans have ever won Olympic medals, ever! Mike is an old friend, a former elite collegiate runner, and a fellow competitor on the professional duathlon circuit, and it was amazing to catch up with him and detail the amazing Olympic journey! The backstory of Grant and Mike is pretty amazing. Mike coached Grant in high school in Michigan, where he became one of only eight high schoolers ever to break four minutes in the mile. Grant then headed off to a great NCAA career in Stanford and a pro career with the elite Bowerman Track Club team in Oregon. In a surprise mid-career shift, Grant decided to go about it his own way. He moved to Park City, UT for altitude training, and phoned up his old high school coach looking for guidance. This is less than a year before the Olympics as America's top distance runner! In this show, Mike will discuss the risks and pressures elite athletes face (and their coaches!) You'll be taken behind the scenes for the Paris Games and the extraordinary measures Grant and Mike took to ensure he could focus and succeed. You'll love the story of how Grant and Mike were locked inside the Olympic stadium late at night after winning his 10,000 meter bronze. You'll learn about Mike's evolved approach where he is solely focused on serving the athlete and avoids getting the all-too-common coaching ego into the mix. You'll learn about today's popular scientific approach to endurance training centered upon measuring and controlling blood lactate levels during workouts, and why many runners "ruin their workouts" with a less disciplined approach. You'll learn the benefits of altitude training, and how Grant's mindset and extensive rehearsals helped him execute awesome strategy at both Olympic races. At the end, Mike provides some profound insights for young runners and their parents about the importance of being motivated naturally and intrinsically. You'll also learn why, a couple decades ago, crime didn't pay in Tucson, AZ, where you might have gotten into a foot pursuit with someone who would most definitely outlast you...I've known and studied lots of coaches over the years, and I don't think you'll find a more healthy and evolved disposition than that embodied by Mike. No wonder Grant phoned him up out of the blue and asked for help going and getting some Olympic medals! Enjoy the show. Young runners can get a daily tip of inspiration by following Mike on X @realironmike TIMESTAMPS: We take a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on with Olympic athletes and their coaches. [00:53] Coaching Grant Fisher in the Olympics, Mike is able to share his expertise. [06:06] What we commonly see these days are high profile teams with big sponsors. It's a different approach from what Mike and Grant have done. [07:54] How did Mike's own experiences with coaches help him to get this particular disposition? [13:43] With the scientific approach, the thing the runner can do is check blood lactate. [16:20] Besides checking blook lactate, Mike checks heart rate, hematocrit and hemoglobin and other things. [19:38] When training at altitude or in the heat of Arizona, you have to cut the tempos why back. [21:19] It is very easy to ruin a workout by using that competitive intensity to work really hard. [23:40] What kind of volume and load can you put on the runner so that he absorbs the training and is ready for the next session? [27:33] You can have all the tech toys in the world but you have to listen to it! [29:48] When you make a detailed plan for the athlete, how often to you deviate from that plan? [31:17] Grant takes good care of himself. He takes care of sleep, massage, his food at home. [39:58] How do they manage the constant risk of overuse injuries? [41:05] In taking on the job to coach Grant Fisher, did you feel nervous about the whole USA expecting some medals? [45:36] What was his experience in Paris? What was the race strategy? [50:00] Living and training at altitude helps your body build additional red blood cells, but when you come down to sea level, you lose some of the benefits. [59:34] When running in the prelim, all you need is to be in the eight finalists. [01:04:13] Staying in the Olympic Village with the other athletes can be fine for social interactions, however, when you have big important events to still compete in, being around rowdy parties doesn't work. [01:05:53] You have to plan on when you need to go faster when you are in the big race. [01:09:15] There is no reason for Grant Fisher to take the lead in the Olympics first 4,000 meters. [01:12:46] Mike's coaching method involves only when the athlete himself asks for coaching, not if the parent asks. [01:21:50] High school kids don't know what they can't do so please don't tell them. "You have to measure out your peaks, especially in an Olympic year. But I'm really happy with my fitness right now. In years past, I haven't been this confident in my fitness. So I'm really happy and just excited to race (against) the world champs, the American record holders. That's really where I see myself thriving and I want to optimize those opportunities." – Cole Hocker Former Oregon Ducks Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker have reunited and are training together in Blacksburg, Virginia under coach Ben Thomas. Teare spent last year working with coach Jerry Schumacher and the Bowerman Track Club before announcing his departure in the fall. He took some time to make a decision but ultimately decided to reunite with his college coach, who led him to his U.S. 1500m title in 2022 and qualified for the World Championship team. Last year, Teare did set a personal best at 800 meters and 1500m but he missed qualifying for the World Championships in Budapest. He got off to a strong start in 2024 by winning the U.S. cross country title just two weeks ago. For Hocker, he's just elevating his training under Thomas and is hoping to have a full healthy year in the leadup to the World Indoor Championships in March and then the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer. Last year, he got off to a later start to the season due to injuries but still managed to qualify for Worlds and then finished seventh in Budapest in a personal best of 3:30.70 for 1500 meters. As Chris recovers from the marathon, Kyle Merber, Eric Jenkins and Mac Fleet took over the show for a special episode of "Office Hourse" – where we answer our followers, readers and listeners' questions. We'll try and do more of these when we're all together in-person. Here are the questions answered in this week's episode: – Do you like the way the U.S. selects its marathon team through the Olympic Trials system? – How much alcohol do pros actually drink? – What do you think is reasonable mileage for a "working runner" to attempt when aiming for a hypothetical sub-2:45 marathon PR? – Why don't we host more professional cross country meets in the United States? – Shouldn't pro runners practice racing without pacers more? – What does it mean when pros say they "get work done" in their training or at races? Like PT/massage/chiropractor? Who is paying for that? – Why is there a Bowerman Track Club exodus? What is happening? – Is Kelvin Kiptum and his fast performance good for the sport? – Why don't runners like Scott Fauble and Emma Bates run more races than marathons? + more To submit a question to the pod, please email us or send a voice recording to thelapcount@gmail.com. As a runner, to get advice from 4-time Olympian (and silver medalist!) Shalane Flanagan the day before running the New York City Marathon is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But as the host of this show? It was unbelievable to sit down with her LIVE and in-person at the culmination of Project Eclipse, a 6-marathon journey over 42 days in which Shalane taught us all that sport is for life. Bringing back this classic 2021 episode in honor of the New York City Marathon, in which we chat about it all: From how she got started with running (fun fact: her mom once held the world record in the marathon!) and what it was like being a collegiate athlete to the sacrifices she made along the way to make a name for herself. We laugh over stories from her world travels and marathons past (Boston 2018, anyone), and she tells me what it means to her to be the 2017 New York City Marathon champion. We also chat big, hairy, audacious goals, why she decided to go after the back-to-back six world marathon majors this year, and what it's like for to wear the Coach hat with the Bowerman Track Club. Plus: Advice for new runners, how to get out of your own way when anxiety takes over, and fueling and nutrition tips in the wake of the release of her new New York Times bestselling cookbook, Rise and Run. This Female Athlete Nutrition podcast episode is with Tokyo 2020 Olympian Elise Cranny. Currently a Nike-sponsored professional runner, Elise found success early on in high school and college, before going on to compete in the Olympics and set multiple American records. These highs have not been without lows, and Elise shares about her struggles with relative energy deficiency in sports (RED-S) that led her down a path of injuries, fatigue, and underperformance. We discuss the steps she took to recover her period, overcome injuries, and restore her mental and physical health through proper fueling and reduced training. Elise is an incredible role model to all athletes, speaking candidly about how embracing body changes, weight gain, and eating more has made her a better, faster, less injured runner. She uses her story to help others avoid the pitfalls of RED-S and underfueling through her social media and the Voice In Sport (VIS) platform. We talk about how the menstrual cycle can be a superpower: Finally, we get an inside look at what fuels this Olympian, and leaves Elise feeling strong and energized. In his most recent race, he ran a PR of 13:02.13 in the 5k to gain the World and Olympic standard. Sean runs for Nike and The Bowerman Track Club. For those who aren't familiar with Sean, he has a long history of success from the time he was in high school. In high school, he won more state-championships and had more accolades than one could remember. In college, Sean became an NCAA Champion in the 5k at Stanford University and pushed forward that program to a new level in his years of representing the farm. In today's conversation, Sean pulls back the curtain on his past ten months of ups and downs. He shares exclusive stories, insights, and wisdom from his journey and all of the different things that have gone on since our last conversation. He discusses his injury from this past winter and how he managed to come back and make the World Championships by placing 3rd in both the 5k and 10k. He goes through this in a deep way that I found fascinating and drew a lot of inspiration from. Today's conversation is one of the best and most inspiring in the history of the podcast. Period. Tap in to the Sean McGorty Special. You won't regret doing so. You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." "Last year, I can't even begin to tell you where my head was at. I was dealing with a lot. My dad had passed away. My girlfriend had just broken up with me. We found out that we were making this move to Eugene...Finally, this year – I'm in a new situation. The training is going super well. I feel my engine is stronger than ever. This is a good time. What do I think I can do? I think the pipedream is that I can win the whole thing. But that's not how I'm going to go in. I'm going to go in to compete, take every wave and hit every move." My guest for today's episode is Woody Kincaid. The former CITIUS MAG Podcaster is back after winning the U.S. 10,000 meter title for the second time in three years. He won in 28:23.01 – which was highlighted by a 54.76s for the final lap and a 26.43 for the last 200m. He finished 9th in the 5000m, which he will lend further context to. This is the first time that he joins the show since switching coaches from Jerry Schumacher and the Bowerman Track Club last year to Mike Smith. The training group that includes World Championship 4th place finisher Luis Grijalva, as well as the newly-minted U.S. 5000m champion Abdihamid Nur and 1500m champion Nikki Hiltz, has started to go by Death Row Records. Kincaid has been on fire. During the indoor season, he broke Grant Fisher's U.S. indoor 5000m record with a 12:51.61. He also ran 27:06.37 for the 10,000m in March. He also ran 12:54.40 while unleashing an epic 54-second final kick to move from 15th to 6th on the final lap. He's got big aspirations for the world championships, where he will focus all of his efforts on the 10,000 meters. "Even in the first week, it's just extremely apparent that this is the perfect environment for me. We've already done workouts that would pretty much have been impossible for me before, but I think it's just having so many World Championship Olympic quality guys in a train that I can just hop into and be a part of that just really elevates every athlete. A lot of people think you become the average of the people you spend the most time around–and these guys are just the absolute best in the world" Charles Hicks who is coming off a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where he finished right behind his Stanford teammate Ky Robinson. Last November, he made history as the first runner from Stanford University to win an NCAA individual cross country title. In his four years at Stanford, he has earned multiple All-American and Pac-12 honors and titles. In addition to all of the collegiate success, he is a two-time European under-23 cross country champion while representing Great Britain. Now, he's ready to open a new chapter. He has decided to forego the remainder of his NCAA eligibility to turn pro, sign with Nike and join the Bowerman Track Club under coach Jerry Schumacher. In the latest episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast, we discuss everything about the decision, how long he's wanted to be a pro runner, what his hopes are for representing Team GB at global championships and the future of his YouTube channel. Professional runner Vanessa Fraser has raced at the highest levels of her sport, but then found herself in a prolonged phase where things just weren't clicking. So she decided to switch things up–a lot. Which is why Vanessa, along with her coach Shalane Flanagan, decided to put the 100 x 1-mile Nike San Francisco Women's Miler Club World Record Relay attempt on her racing calendar. The event takes place June 3, 2023. Discover how Vanessa got here, and why choosing to run a huge community event with 99 other women became an excellent fit for her process of continuing to compete at the highest levels of her sport. Vanessa Fraser discovered her love of running in the third grade and has raced for the powerhouse collegiate team at Stanford and the prestigious Nike-sponsored professional team, the Bowerman Track Club. Then last year, in 2020, she decided to strike out on her own as a professional runner and forge a more personalized path in the sport. As part of that, Vanessa will be running the kick-off leg of this incredible 100 x 1-mile World Record Relay attempt, which will take place at Cox Stadium at San Francisco State University. The women of the San Francisco Bay Area set this relay record both in 1977 and again in 1997. Then in 1999, the record was reset by the Canadian Women's Miler Club, with a time of 9:23:39: that averages out to 5:37 minutes per mile. The women of the SF Bay Area are ready to take the record back. All of the 100 women on the relay team have ties to the San Francisco Bay Area, and there is a huge age range: from 13 to 63. Qualifications, other than having ties to the SF Bay Area, are, for runners 50 or under, they have to show that they can run a sub-6:00 minute mile; for those 50 or older, it's a sub-8:00 minute mile. "I'm not the type of athlete who likes to go to the track, come home, and watch Netflix or play video games until the next run, and then rinse and repeat. I will go crazy trying to do that. A lot of people enjoy that and think they have to do that in order to get the success that they are working toward — that they have to give up every other part of their life that isn't running related. And I've always pushed back on that. I don't think it's this either/or situation. I think there's an 'and.' You just have to figure out the right 'and' blend." Colleen Quigley is affectionately known as "Steeple Squigs" — a play on her last name, combined with what has always been her greatest passion: competing in the steeplechase. The Florida State University alum rose to fame within the professional track and field ranks by becoming a Nike-sponsored Olympian who trained with the Bowerman Track Club. At the end of 2020, Colleen announced her departure from both Nike and BTC, and in May 2021, she signed with new sponsor lululemon. Now, she's continuing to do things her way, which means slightly less conventional training methods and goals for a track athlete: She's going multisport! Colleen has spent the past several months embracing the swim-bike-run life, and this weekend, she'll compete in her first triathlon in hopes of earning her pro card. So why triathlon? And is she done on the track? All that and more in this conversation. SPONSOR: New Balance. Click here to shop New Balance's latest releases for the season. This week I spoke with Olympian Marielle Hall, who represented the U.S. in the 10,000m at the Rio Games in 2016. She's also a four-time world championship qualifier, finished 8th in the 10,000m at the 2019 world championships in Doha, and won a national 15K title on the roads in 2020. This episode came to be a few weeks after I was introduced to Marielle last month in Mammoth Lakes, California, where she's been training at altitude in preparation for her half-marathon debut later this fall. In this conversation, Marielle and I talked about how she's using this training camp as an opportunity to re-center herself and set the tone for the year ahead. She told me about traps that she's gotten stuck in over the years and how she's trying to maintain focus and keep the main thing the main thing. We discussed how she's feeling now versus a year ago when she left the Bowerman Track Club, and when she knew it was time to change her training environment. Marielle talked to me about moving up in distance over the years and the differences between racing on the track and on the road, how she sees herself now that she's out of the hole of injury and uncertainty, and what she thinks she's capable of when she's healthy and firing on all cylinders. We also discussed the ways in which her relationship to running has evolved over the years, what she hopes it looks like moving forward, and so, so much more. This episode is brought to you by:— The Monterey Bay Half Marathon.
