"I basically started my comeback then and said, let's try to get as much fitness as we can until October. I had this whole theory. You know how Norwegian threshold training is so ‘in'? I was like, this basically is threshold training because the only thing [the doctors] tell you is, ‘don't get your heart rate over 85%.' So I was like, ‘I'm just the pregnant Jakob.' I'm glad I kind of tempered it. I didn't actually do double threshold, but we did a lot of threshold work… My theme was like, ‘Well, I would never in my career otherwise have two years to do threshold training, so why not now?'" Kate Grace is in the midst of what most mid-30-somethings with a young child could only dream of – a late-career resurgence as a professional athlete. After a 2021 outdoor campaign that saw her go on a sub-two tear across the Diamond League circuit after just missing an Olympic team, Grace's training and racing was derailed by a bout of injury and long Covid. She then became a mother, giving birth to her son in March of 2023. But now, here we are in May of 2024 and she's got a fighter's chance at an Olympic berth in the 800m once again. Grace joined the podcast to talk about the past three years of her life, the ups, the downs, and her unique take on training at the moment. It's always fun to hear about an athlete who is taking a different approach to the sport, and it's even more enjoyable when that athlete is so candid in discussing their experimentations with training. Time stamps: 4:45 - What's kept her in the sport for so long. 6:28 - Why she took a break from competing and the reasons she returned to it. 8:24 - How she dealt with long COVID + how she trained throughout her pregnancy. 15:01 - How she's approaching training + her mindset heading into the rest of the season. 17:50 - Reflecting on her 800m opener at the LA Grand Prix. 19:56 - Why she's going all-in on training for the 800m 21:54 - Her perspective on how the women's 800m scene has evolved. 23:09 - Her 800m racing strategy. 24:54 - Unpacking her experience training with Team Boss and Joe Bosshard + her experience coaching herself. 28:48 - What a typical week of training looks like for her. 31:04 - Sharing her experience with “The Track Club” in Boulder. 32:27 - Where her next few races will be leading up to the U.S. Trials. 33:19 - Her interest in coaching. 34:40 - How long she intends to continue running professionally. 36:05 - How she wants the rest of her running career to unfold. "I am just so thrilled for what's to come. I don't know what that is. But I have faith that it's working out as it should." We're long overdue for a catch-up session with professional runner and Olympian Kate Grace! The last time Kate was on the Ali on the Run Show was two years ago, after she had just competed at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team Trials, where she had hoped to make her second Olympic team in the 800m. Kate fell just short, finishing fourth in the final. But remember what happened next? Kate went on to have the best Revenge Summer ever! She went to Europe where she ran four races in four different countries in a 10-day span, and her time overseas earned her two wins and three personal bests. She had just moved to Boulder, CO, to train with Team Boss and coach Joe Bosshard. She was living the dream, and excited about her upcoming season — which, as we learn in this episode, Kate had planned to be her last. In this episode, Kate talks about going from the highest highs to the most devastating lows. She talks about getting Long Covid, about deciding how and when to retire from the sport, and, ultimately, about her decision to have a baby. Kate's son, River, is now four months old, and Kate is back on the run and "itching to go fast!" Be sure to check out Sound Running's Coverage of the 5000m event we discuss in this episode on May 6th. You can access the PPV LINK HERE for $5.99. Seems really fair to us. Tomek & Steve give a short review of the Boston Marathon & anticipate the coming action in outdoor track & field this summer. Steve's Most Anticipated Cade Flatt - HS 800 runner. Want to see if he can run 1:46,45 to break the HS record. Only two HSers under 1:46 ever. Love his attitude. Focusing on World Juniors. Love his attitude & approach. He's into MMA & brings that warrior mindset to an event that may be the closest to a MMA fight in energy & ferocity. https://trackandfieldnews.com/high-schooler-cade-flatt-focusing-on-no-1-in-the-800/Tomek: I like Cade. Women's 800m at US Champs & World Champs - With Ajee WIlson's win at WIC, how will Athing Mu respond? How does the new guard (Mu, Raeven Rogers, Michaela Meyer, Allie WIlson) of American women in the 800m respond to the “older” guard (A.Wlson, Kate Grace, Chanelle Price). There are HS athletes who we are still seeing amazing things from recently (Roisin WIllis-17 yo Sr - 2:00.05), Sophia Gorriaran-16 yo Jr -2:00.58) with new HS records this indoor season. That's just the US. At WIC we missed seeing the two UK women who were finalist & one a medalist at the Games, I expect to see many epic battles at this distance. Watch the women's 800m OT Final 8 of the 9 finalists went under 2:00 & the 9th finished (Nia Atkins) fell down in the first 200m. Tomek: For sure, that would be interesting. Especially, this is going to be Athing's first full pro year: Less races, more pressure to perform when it counts etc. At least she is at the same training/life environment as last year. Elise Cranny - She's run 14:33i & 30:14 out. SHe has ferocity, hunger, mental toughness & is poised to be our most competitive 5K/10K athlete in multiple generations. I won't be surprised with a WC medal in Eugene & the women's world elite 5K/10K is not a place we expect to see an America woman from a tiny town in Colorado. Expect Jerry to have her ready & there is a seething anger boiling in the bellies of the Bowerman women. I expect Cranny to be all piss & vinegar at the WC Trial & WC in Eugene. Tomek: Also Karrisa Schwizer is back. And I doubt she wants to give away #1 5K-er to Elise ;-) But Elise showed good 1500m speed in her last race, which makes her hard to beat at 5k. Men's 1500/5K - With the Ingebretsen/Cheryuiot duels now at an epic level how will the rest of the world respond, esp the surging Aussie/UK threats. Add an invigorated Ethiopian contingent & a rested recovered Cheptegei at the 5K, we are in for a very exciting series of races where Jakob now has the full weight of the pressure on his shoulders. Additionally, we have Grant Fisher/Mo Ahmed in the 5K/10K where the can be expected to be in the mix. This will be very interesting. Tomek: 1500m I bet Jakob is only thinking about WR :-) But then again, lots of changes in Team Ingebritsen Tomek's Most Anticipated: US 1500m Can youngsters repeat 2021: Hocker, Hobbs, NeguseIs Centro done? Christian Nobel's new D2 3:36:00 record Donovan Brazier vs World Sifan Hassan — what are her goals in 2022? It's going to be epic either way Sprints Women: Abby Steiner (how fast she can go?)Sha'Carri Richardson (if she doesn't perform, is going to quit?) Brittany Brown — can she be new US star? Jamaica vs USMen:Marcel Jocob vs Americans How fast can Erriyon Knighton go 200m? Vs Noah LylesMatthew Boling — only him and Carl Lewis sub 10, sub 20, >8m LJ. What is his future?
Kate Grace is a lot of things, not least of which is 2016 Olympian in the 800m and one of the top middle-distance runners in the U.S. for much of the past ten years. At the age of 33 she's running faster than ever and isn't showing signs of slowing down anytime soon. But there's so much more to Kate than just her speed: I've always respected her for her individuality and outlook on the sport, I appreciate her attitude and longevity as an athlete, and I'm inspired by her confidence but also the fact that she doesn't try to take herself too seriously. In this episode, we talk about all of those things and then some, including how she keeps her emotions in check, why she thinks American women have been running so fast in the middle distances the past few years, and a lot more. We can't think of a better way to finish the summer of Kate Grace than with a podcast with Kate Grace! Yes, she's an Olympian, US Champion, and now multiple-time Diamond League winner, but her career is loaded with ups and downs from injuries to team and sponsor changes and to disappointment on the track. Through it all, she remains the same, balanced human who operates with high integrity and who values family above it all. For those reasons alone, we know you will love getting to know Kate in this episode. In addition, we know you will be interested to learn from Kate about the practical reality of clean sport in her daily life from whereabouts filings and early morning drug tests to avoiding contaminated food or supplements. Plus, she provides her perspective on the Shelby Houlihan case as a former teammate. In the end, she tells about what's next for her as she dreams big for the next Olympic cycle. We have a good feeling that there will be more summers of Kate Grace around the corner, and we can't wait to cheer her on for all of them!
"Time moves forward. There is the next step and there is an action to be taken...It's no fun to have a disappointment but you fully control what happens next. Your decisions and actions can make whatever happens next...so why not make something good of it or at least try?" We kick off the new season of 'More Than Running' with Kate Grace, who is coming off one of the best seasons of any American middle distance runner. After finishing seventh in the women's 800 meter final at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June, she picked herself back up to run four sub-1:58 performances in the event including a personal best of 1:57.20 (which puts her at No. 8 on the U.S. all-time list). She also finished second in the Diamond League final in Zurich. In her conversation with Dana, they discuss how she overcame the disappointment and her lessons on how she makes herself feel the most powerful and confident version of herself on the starting line. Today we're doing something a little different with a panel of running experts. We are discussing a variety of topics, everything from training-related questions to the not-so-serious ones. Endeavorun created a unique experience for a group of runner enthusiasts. We got to spend a few days together in Boulder, CO at a retreat focusing on all things running. One of our highlight events was a panel discussion that you're about to hear. We sat down with Olympian Kate Grace, 2:19 marathoner Peter Bromka, author Matt Fitzgerald, registered dietitian Lydia Nader, and myself for a live Q&A. Our questions included: You are at a bar and you overhear someone talking about running. They say something that causes you to correct them. What did they say? Your bucket list race What is something about running that you are an expert in and is largely misunderstood? Doing the live Q&A with a group of running experts from all different backgrounds made for a lively conversation. We talked about pacing, track standards, goal races, and recovery. “Nothing is guaranteed. And because of that, it enabled me to be so present and so thankful and aware of how special the whole thing was.” Welcome to Season 3 of the What's New With You series, where we catch up with past guests on the Ali on the Run Show. And we're kicking off this season with professional middle-distance runner Kate Grace! The last time Kate was on the show, in December 2017, she had just left her sponsor, Oiselle, to sign with Nike and join the Bowerman Track Club. Now, three and a half years later, Kate has left BTC and is now a member of Team Boss, training under coach Joe Bosshard. (And she's moving! Kate is in the process of relocating from Portland, OR, to Boulder, CO, to train full-time with the team.) On this episode, Kate talks about her decision to change teams, and talks about how training is different with Coach Joe. Plus, she recaps her races at this year's Olympic Track & Field Trials, where she hoped to make her second Olympic team in the 800m, but ultimately fell short of that goal. But Kate isn't sitting around sulking: She is, in her words, "living her best life" right now, and is fresh off a European revenge tour, where she raced four times (in four different countries) in 10 days, earning two wins and three personal bests in the process. We are excited to present this conversation with new Olympian Cory McGee! She earned a spot in Tokyo with a 2nd place finish in the 1500m at the Olympic Trials earlier this week, and in this episode, she joins us to tell us all about it. Cory has been running at a high level for a very long time. She was a US junior champion in 2011 then went on to become a 10-time All-American at the University of Florida. In the pro ranks, she's been working diligently toward this breakthrough moment for a really long time. In this discussion, she talks about the importance of her move to Team Boss and the lessons she's learned from teammates Emma Coburn, Aisha Praught-Leer, Kate Grace, Dom Scott, and Laura Thweatt. She then takes us through the race from her pre-race expectations and strategy to the glorious final 100m when she willed her body to that 2nd place finish. Cory just loves to run and knowing her integrity and her stance on clean sport makes it so easy to cheer loudly for her both now and in Tokyo later this summer!

We spoke to scientist, distance runner and trans woman Joanna Harper about her book Sporting Gender. In it she covers the history and science of DSD and transatheltes in an interesting read that gives deeper information on the discussions about women’s sport you likely have seen in recent news as well as an inside view of some of the IAAF rulings on DSD and Trans athletes. We also hear from 800m runner Kate Grace (as well as Alysia) on their perspectives in an event that has seen dominance by women with DSD and how they’re both honestly still figuring out how to talk about this complex topic and all it’s intersections in a way that’s fair and supportive for all involved. (full transcript and show notes with links at our site)
Kevin and Gordon discuss a newly announced series of indoor meets, sleepers to make the Olympic team and Kate Grace leaving the Bowerman Track Club. Plus, Gordon does a deep dive on how the Iowa State men could win the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Andi and Zach tackle the question of how to approach key training elements like speed, strength, and endurance, and to dig deep into the topic, Kate Grace joins the show to share her experiences and expertise as an Olympic 800m runner and a member of America's premier track program, Bowerman Track Club. Wondering what you can do to prevent injuries? Let's learn from the best in the sport! Today's podcast rounds up advice from the world's top female runners on what they do to prevent injuries and stay healthy while performing at the highest levels. I asked a single question to 5 of the best runners in the world - Colleen Quigley, Sara Hall, Grayson Murphy, Kate Grace, and Molly Huddle: What single idea, tool, or strategy is most helpful in keeping you healthy and running injury-free? The responses are fascinating. Particularly, pay attention to the commonalities. These women are especially focused on what allows them to run sustainably, improve over time, and focus on their own particular needs. Many of the women mentioned the importance of your mindset, and I couldn't agree more! That's why we offer a course designed to improve your mental toughness, along with techniques that you can implement in your own running. If you aren't ready for a full course, check out these helpful guides to up your mental game: Mantras for running Mental toughness training Additional tips from a sports phycologist See what these incredible women had to say and, of course, see our ultimate guide for injury prevention. Thank You PATH Projects! PATH Projects continues to be a great supporter of this podcast! I'm grateful for their partnership and want to share more about their products that I've been loving because they so durable and comfortable. PATH Projects is an online-only retailer of high-quality running gear and apparel. That means there is no retail markup, making their products quite affordable. In particular, I’ve just started wearing their 3” Sykes shorts and they’re a little different from the 5” Sykes shorts (you can see those in action here). The material is thinner and lighter, which is perfect in a performance short, and they’re obviously shorter. I’m not sure if my wife thinks they’re too scandalous or loves them, but I’m wearing them constantly. PATH uses new technical fabrics, like the Japanese fiber called Toray Primeflex, to create award-winning apparel for endurance athletes. In fact, their Brim shorts and Tahoe base liner won Runner’s World’s 2018 Gear of the Year award. And the Pyrinees hoodie was named one of the best six sweatshirts for running in the cold by Gear Patrol. You know you'll be wearing the best when you select PATH Projects!
Today is special because I'm talking to my daughter, Olympian Kate Grace, about something that every great athlete knows a lot about: motivation. The biggest lessons that I've learned for my daughter have to do with how she trains her mind as well as her body so she can push through the plateaus in training and push through setbacks - like the delay of the Olympics - and stay focused and consistent over so many years. So, whether you have your sights on the Olympics, a marathon, a 5K, or you just need to get out of bed in the morning and get moving and go for your walk, we can all benefit from these tips and tricks on how to flex your motivational muscle. Kate Grace is a professional runner for Nike and the Bowerman Track Club. She was a guest on ROO 120, which aired in 2015. Hello! Welcome to episode 45 of the Chasing Bravery Podcast! Today I am speaking with professional runner for Nike, Olympian, and believer of sharing and engaging in the process Kate Grace! In college Kate went to Yale (she’s pretty smart, AND fast) where she broke four school records, won six Heps Championships, and was four time NCAA Division I Track and Field and Cross Country All-American. Post collegiate, Kate continued to train and race- competing in the 2012 US Olympic Track and Field Trials where she placed 20th in the 1500. For the next 4 years Kate continued to train and improve through bumps in the process. By 2016 Kate was ready to go having improved her personal best in both the 1500 meters and the 800 meter running a notable sub 2 minute prior to the trials. For those of you who are track lovers, you know how the 2016 US Olympic Track and Field Trials, 800 meter final unfolded. Kate ran a strong, smart race…winning in a time of 1:59:10. Unfortunately, the race behind her had ended in upset with multiple racers becoming caught in a fall. Kate handled this damper on her win with grace and poise and went on to place 8th at the 2016 Olympics- the top American woman and running a PR to boot. Today Kate trains with the Bowerman Track Club and is in pursuit of second Olympic Games which have been officially postponed until July of 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Kate and I discuss her feelings about this major shift in training and how she is processing and moving forward. We chat about how it is ok and normal to feel disappointed while feeling 100% certain that postponing is the right thing to do. It was a pleasure to speak with this speedy, intelligent, and thoughtful lady. I know you will enjoy the conversation as much as I did! Jennifer welcomes to the podcast businesswoman and mother, Kate Grace Bauer. Kate is the President of Operations at Ashley Longshore Studio Gallery in New Orleans and, as importantly, a working mother. Over the past six years, she has worked to grow the Longshore Studio Gallery and Longshore brand to the empire that it is today, while simultaneously raising her 22-month-old daughter, Colette. As a new mother, Kate Grace deeply values her work/life balance. She is proud to work for such an incredible kind and caring boss who fosters a professional environment that is compassionate towards women and mothers. What are you passionate about? Maybe it’s music, cooking, spending time with friends, or reading a good book. But your passion shouldn’t just be something that you enjoy in the spare moments of your day or just on the weekend. After all, our passions aren’t supposed to exist in a vacuum. Instead, the things that inspire us are meant to draw us closer to the Lord and closer to those around us on a daily basis. So just how do you take your passion to a deeper level of service? Today, I’m talking with Katie Lynch. She’s the founder of Kate+Grace boutique, an online clothing shop with a unique mission to serve women and bring joy. We talk about the story behind her boutique, how to practice the corporeal works of mercy in our own community, and why it’s important to bring our passions to prayer.
Borrowing an idea from our mutual friend Nicole Antoinette, Kate has decided to choose courage over comfort when it comes to showing up and racing. When it comes to getting the most from our bodies, all of us have some trepidation about the discomfort of racing. It can be unpleasant and downright painful. But deciding to "go all in" and embrace that fear is the only way we can reach our potential. It's not an easy choice. Comfort is far easier: the comfort of sleeping in, not signing up for that big race, or not pushing hard during the final mile. But comfort can be the invisibility cloak that masks failure. After all, if we're only operating at 85%, are we really thriving? Today's conversation with Kate Grace covers many areas of training and mastering your inner psychology: How she handles workout anxiety and pre-race jitters What she does to stay in control of her thoughts during demanding speed workouts How she talks to herself in fearful situations (like standing on the starting line of a major championship)
In this episode, I start with a quick recap on the Millrose Games, discussing the 800m and 1 mile races. Congrats to Ajee Wilson and Donovan Brazier on new US records in the 800m. Then at 14:30 into the discussion, I start an interview with Kara Goucher and Jean Rigatti. Kara needs no introduction, and Jean is one of my athletes here at Rogue (who was also on episode #38). Jean is overcoming "failure" at her most recent race at the California International Marathon and represents that runner in all of us with failures and mental challenges to overcome. Kara shares her own wisdom and experiences (including her DNF in Houston) to coach Jean through it while also imparting advice on a variety of mental training topics. It's a powerful discussion with lots of practical advice from Kara's book Strong: A Runner's Guide to Boosting Confidence and Becoming the Best Version of You. From the intro, check out Kate Grace's blog on race weight: https://fastk8.com/2019/02/13/race-weight/
In the intro, we break down the recently announced London and Boston Marathon fields, including perhaps the greatest field ever assembled for a women's marathon. Plus, Chris gives his way too early picks for the wins in both races. Then, at 17:45, episode #67 guest Colleen Quigley comes on to help break the ice with Kate Grace with fun questions about the #BowermanBabes. We get answers to pressing questions such as "which Bowerman Babe is the biggest Bachelor fan?" After that, we turn to an all-encompassing discussion with Kate on her journey from high school soccer player to 800m Olympic Finalist in Rio. Learn about the ups and downs of her journey with lessons that she has learned along the way about life, dreaming big, injury, and much more! And to check out the great quote from Marshawn Lynch, you can watch his interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6hHBcOzz6Q
Kate Grace. California XC state champ, Yale alum, professional runner. But not all paths up the mountain of potential are straight. After a pair of seasons battling injury, doubt, disappointment, BTC's (almost) newest member persevered and became US middle distance running's unexpected front runner. Doesn't matter if it's Millrose. Doesn't matter if it's Dempsey. Zurich. Portland. Kate Grace has returned. And that dominance doesn't look like it's going away, either. Did we mention Chris Derrick is co-hosting? No? Well, he is. Find out why people in Portland, Oregon are stoked to welcome the 2016 Olympian to the Rose City on this edition of POAM.
It’s been a big few years for professional runner and Olympian Kate Grace. In 2016, the Yale graduate won the Olympic Trials in the 800-meter event in Eugene, OR, and went on to represent Team USA in Rio, where she finished eighth. She chased that with a personal best in the 800 meters in Zurich, running a 1:59.47. A few months later, Kate's contract with Oiselle, her sponsor of four years and her first major professional sponsor, was up, and she announced her decision to join Nike, the industry behemoth despised by many at Oiselle. Then, this past fall, Kate officially joined Portland, OR-based Bowerman Track Club, where she now trains alongside some of professional running’s greatest, fastest women, including Shalane Flanagan, Amy Cragg, and Emily Infeld, and is coached by Jerry Schumacher. On this episode, Kate lets us all inside the head of a hardworking athlete and Olympian. She shares what it’s like training with some of the fastest women in the world, and talks about the “not glamorous” parts of racing. She explains her recent sponsorship decisions, breaks down how to master the 800m, and talks about why the 800-meter race at the Trials was “a shitshow.” Plus, Kate shares what it’s like competing at the Oympics — and what the athlete’s village is really like — and talks about how to deal with injuries, her fitness-world-famous mom, the comeback she’s hoping for this February, and what’s next. On this episode, Sally shares the “oh shit” and “oh no” moments that led her to create Oiselle, and talks about why it’s so important to her that she and her company empower women. She talks about Oiselle’s decision to start sponsoring professional athletes, including Kate Grace, Lauren Fleshman, and Kara Goucher, and shares the career opportunity that gave her a pit in her stomach and made her “want to throw up.” She also opens up about some of Oiselle’s more controversial moments like “LogoGate,” her opinion of “The Swoosh” (that’s Nike, of course), and her take on the state of influencer marketing. Very few people commit themselves to that pursuit and even fewer achieve their dreams. Well, today, we have a U.S. Olympian with us to talk about the ups and downs of being a world class athlete. And she’s also my first daughter and I was able to travel to Rio and see her compete in an Olympic Final! Follow Kate on Twitter (@fastk8), Instagram, and Facebook.

"Each One Of Us Has Majesty Within Us" Kathy Smith Recorded a week before Kathy left for Rio Brazil to cheer and support her daughter Kate Grace in the Olympics, Kathy and I sat down to talk about her past, her present and her magnificent future both inside and out of the fitness industry. Side note Grace made it to the Olympic finals while also running a personal best. Kathy shares how that at a very early age she lost both her parents. It was this tragedy that propelled her into running, and she shares how movement also helped her heal through this challenging time. We go back to where her fitness career began and how she is always learning, evolving and reinventing both her career and life's journey. As with all my guests, Kathy reveals how important her morning rituals are. She shares how she spends her mornings and reveals her favorite B.LT (no it is not what you are hoping it is - it's better) Kathy talks about the power of intuition and shares how she stays in the present so that she can hear the whispers from the world and be open and available to the new opportunities all around her. She reminds us of the importance of not taking anything personally and how we can be rejected, but it has nothing to do with us. I love that at about 30 minutes in Kathy really begins to dive into the good stuff. She talks about learning to make peace with the fact that not everyone is going to love what we do and how challenging yet important that lesson is to learn. Kathy discusses the power of gratitude and how she finds time to marvel in the smallest of moments and finds the extra-ordinary in the seemingly ordinary of days. In episode 10 we get ready for the start of track at the Olympics by talking to coach Drew Wartenburg of the NorCal Distance Project. Drew coaches Kate Grace who will be running the 800 and Kim Conley who will be running the 5k in Rio. We talk about their training, race strategies, how they use Final Surge in their training and answer some questions from Twitter. :45 How did you get your start in running? 3:40 When you started coaching what level was that at? 4:40 Then in 2014 you started the NorCal Distance Project? 5:42 You had a pretty good showing in the Olympic trials. Let’s start by talking about what Kate Grace did in the 800. What a great story this was. She ran controlled early and qualified 8th in the first round. Then in the second round, 8 make finals, and she was 6th. And then saving her best for last I believe she ran a PR in the 800? 7:25 What was the thought process on focusing on the 800 and tell us what you two were thinking going into the finals? They talked about staying safe, which if you saw the race was a wise decision. 10:00 The first lap went out quick in the finals, about a 57 first lap. Was this what you expected? 10:45 Part of being a great runner is not only being fast, but running smart. Kate seemed to do a great job kind of staying towards the back of the pack to the inside, then with about 130 left Kate really started moving, what was your thought at that point? 12:50 Drew talks about Kate’s celebration moment, or lack there of. 13:55 You talked about that hand on the knees moment, you see that at the end of most of these races, but Kate finished with a look on her face like she was ready to do it again. - Drew talks about how they prepared for that moment. 15:32 We talk 800 racing strategy. I would love to get your thoughts. Most 800 races seem to go out the first lap about 2 seconds faster than the second lap. One of my favorites races ever is the 1972 Olympics won by American Dave Wottle. The first lap, the two Kenyas are out front and Wottle was like 2 second behind 200 meters into the race. Bottle is not only in last, but a good amount behind the leader. Then Kenyans run a 52 first lap, and a 54 second lap. Just like most 800s. Wottle runs about a 53.2/52.5 I believe, almost even, slight negative split by a half second and wins in a dramatic come from behind situation. Do you think that runners could do a better job by backing off a little in the first lap or do you think they need to go? 19:15 Another athlete you had make the team is Kim Conley in the 5k. She was one of the favorites in the 10k, but then, there was a shoe incident were she lost a shoe in the race. Can you tell is what your thought process was as you were watching it? 22:40 Was it her decision to drop in the 10k or did you tell her to pull out? 24:40 In the 5k there was a group of 6 girls with 400 to go including Huddle, Houlihan, Mackey, Infeld and Kim, who are all known to have great finishes. At about 300 left things were starting to spread out, how were you feeling about her chances at that time? 27:10 When preparing for the US Trials you really need to be at your best to make the team and peak at the right time. So how hard is to hold that peak for another 6-7 weeks until the Olympics starts? 29:40 Have you talked to them about what their goals are now that they are in the Olympics? 30:50 It was recently announced that Kim is making her marathon debut in NYC in November. How are you balancing the training between the 5k now and marathon debut soon? Questions from Twitter: 34:05 First question from @DougPetrick1 - Other than the number of reps & pace, how different are your workouts for runners that do similar events? 36:30 Do you use any lactate threshold measuring devices in your training and if so do you have any recommendations? 38:10 You are using Final Surge for your training with your athletes, how is that working for you and what do you like most about it? 41:37 Rapid fire, 5 questions in under a minute ready Rapid Fire... 5 questions in under 1 minute Favorite running book or blog? - Life at These Speeds by Jeremy Jackson Current trainers you are wearing? - New Balance 880’s Favorite race? - The next one on the schedule Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? - Chocolate milk followed by a good burger Your favorite piece of running equipment that is not your shoes? - A good running hat Drew on Twitter

Before we let Kate go, we run through her Twitter (12:30) and ask questions about misshapen cookies, making pizza choices and The Beatles!
