THE CONNOR BURNS & SIMEON BIRNBAUM SPECIALThe Oregon Boys are back in action, baby! Our Call Room legends, Connor Burns and Simeon Birnbaum, return from a short TRE break–ready to dish on everything they've been up to. Buckle up!The boys broke the 4-minute mile barrier in high school, and set countless state records. Connor set a National Record in the 5k by running 13:37; Simeon set a South Dakota state record in the 3,200m; ran the second-fastest 2-mile in US high school history; and the second-fastest 1,500m time in high school history.Connor is off to a strong 2025 season so far, setting a PR in the 3,000m indoors on February 14 with a time of 7:48.47. In high school, he had PRs of 1:51.00 in the 800m, 3:45.42 in the 1,500m, and 3:58.83 in the mile. Simeon has high school PRs of 1:47.96 in the 800m, 3:37.93 in the 1,500m, 3:57.53 in the mile and 8:34.10 in the 2-mile.Just eye-popping numbers from both stud athletes.  The boys' freshman years were hampered a bit by injury, but that doesn't dim the swagger they bring on the track and the grass. These boys are far from shy, and are the linchpins of Oregon coach Jerry Schumacher's distance program. Schumacher assumed leadership in 2022 after a 15-year tenure with the Nike Bowerman Track Club.In today's conversation, Connor and Simeon take me through their XC/fall seasons and indoor season accomplishments, including Connor's B1G title in the 5k and Simeon running 3:52 in the Mile. "I needed to have the year I had to really give me the push to make the changes I made." In 2022, Sinclaire Johnson cemented her spot as a middle-distance rising star when she broke the women's 1500m tape at the U.S. National Championships. Since then, the Nike-sponsored athlete has made a lot of changes on the run. She transitioned from Jerry Schumacher's Bowerman Track Club to Union Athletics Club, where she was coached by Pete Julian. Last year — a year when she finished fourth in the 1500m at the Olympic Track & Field Trials — Sinclaire knew it was time to change it up again, this time opting to forgo a team environment and be coached by her fiancé, Craig Nowak. Now, with a fresh 3:56 1500m PR from the 2024 Trials, Sinclaire is in the middle of her indoor season. She ran a personal best in the mile (4:23.58) at New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, where she finished third, and then finished sixth in the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York City. I've become a better coach because I have the opportunity to work with these pro women and I'm excited to continue to get better, learn from them, and make sure that they're at the center of everything that I do. My guest for today's episode is Diljeet Taylor. We had her on the show last fall after she won the NCAA Cross Country Championships with her BYU women. For those of you who aren't familiar, she's one of the most transformative coaches in the sport. She's built BYU's women's cross country program and distance program into a national powerhouse, coaching NCAA champions, Olympians, and creating one of the strongest cultures in collegiate running. Now she's stepping into an even bigger role, leading a professional training group with Nike while continuing to coach at BYU. Nike has announced Swoosh TC for Oregon, Utah, and Arizona. It's being described by the brand as a network of elite athletes, coaches, and innovators working together to push the boundaries of performance and progress. Coach Taylor will oversee the Utah division, Jerry Schumacher will head Oregon along with Shalane Flanagan, and Mike Smith will lead the club in Arizona beginning in July 2025 in partnership from Rachel Smith. In this conversation, we make sense of what all of that means.  We get into the behind-the-scenes details of her new role, how she's balancing coaching, both collegiate and professional athletes, and what it takes to develop elite runners at the highest level. We also touch on the mindset of success, the importance of culture, and the transition from NCAA to professional racing. "You have to measure out your peaks, especially in an Olympic year. But I'm really happy with my fitness right now. In years past, I haven't been this confident in my fitness. So I'm really happy and just excited to race (against) the world champs, the American record holders. That's really where I see myself thriving and I want to optimize those opportunities." – Cole Hocker Former Oregon Ducks Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker have reunited and are training together in Blacksburg, Virginia under coach Ben Thomas. Teare spent last year working with coach Jerry Schumacher and the Bowerman Track Club before announcing his departure in the fall. He took some time to make a decision but ultimately decided to reunite with his college coach, who led him to his U.S. 1500m title in 2022 and qualified for the World Championship team. Last year, Teare did set a personal best at 800 meters and 1500m but he missed qualifying for the World Championships in Budapest. He got off to a strong start in 2024 by winning the U.S. cross country title just two weeks ago. For Hocker, he's just elevating his training under Thomas and is hoping to have a full healthy year in the leadup to the World Indoor Championships in March and then the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer. Last year, he got off to a later start to the season due to injuries but still managed to qualify for Worlds and then finished seventh in Budapest in a personal best of 3:30.70 for 1500 meters. Both guys have been added to the men's two-mile field at the Millrose Games on February 11th in New York City. The field includes 1500m world champion Josh Kerr and U.S. 5000m and 10,000m record holder Grant Fisher. The Millrose Games is the sixth stop on the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold calendar. What do I think I can do? I think the pipedream is that I can win the whole thing. But that's not how I'm going to go in. I'm going to go in to compete, take every wave and hit every move." My guest for today's episode is Woody Kincaid. The former CITIUS MAG Podcaster is back after winning the U.S. 10,000 meter title for the second time in three years. He won in 28:23.01 – which was highlighted by a 54.76s for the final lap and a 26.43 for the last 200m. He finished 9th in the 5000m, which he will lend further context to. This is the first time that he joins the show since switching coaches from Jerry Schumacher and the Bowerman Track Club last year to Mike Smith. The training group that includes World Championship 4th place finisher Luis Grijalva, as well as the newly-minted U.S. 5000m champion Abdihamid Nur and 1500m champion Nikki Hiltz, has started to go by Death Row Records. Kincaid has been on fire. During the indoor season, he broke Grant Fisher's U.S. indoor 5000m record with a 12:51.61. He also ran 27:06.37 for the 10,000m in March. He also ran 12:54.40 while unleashing an epic 54-second final kick to move from 15th to 6th on the final lap. He's got big aspirations for the world championships, where he will focus all of his efforts on the 10,000 meters. Today on the podcast, I chat to Jon Marcus an established and extremely well-versed distance running coach from the US. Jon is co-host of the ‘On coaching podcast' with Steve Magness, this is one of my favourite running podcasts. Jon regularly questions the status quo, his blend of science, art, history and openness has been a breath of fresh air for a young running coach like myself. Besides; 'we don't know what we don't know.' Throughout the years Jon has coached hundreds of athletes, read thousands of books (his home book library is exhaustive) and has had some amazing mentors/friends and influences in the running world, including; Rob Connor, Jerry Schumacher, Alberto Salazar, Steve Magness, Mike Smith, Dan Mackey etc… It was a fantastic opportunity to chat to Jon today and pick his brain. I have been a member of his online run coaching scholar program for the past year now, this experience has well and truly helped broadened my perspective and the way I approach running/life. Today we talk about; -Why do we gravitate to linear/dichotomous ways of thought? Why is it important to keep reminding ourselves that the world is complex? -Why is it important for runners/coaches to always remain hungry to learn? -How important is individualisation/personalisation in running? -We bring into question, the ‘mileage obsession' in the distance running community. -and finish with what Jon learnt most from his experiences with; Alberto Salazar, Jerry Schumacher and Rob Connor? I hope you enjoy this chat, I hope it gets you to question your processes, I hope it garners a thirst to learn more and never stop learning. If you want to hear more from Jon, be sure to listen to his on-coaching podcast with Steve Magness. Thanks once again for being so generous with your time Jon!

This week's guest is Elise Cranny of Bowerman Track Club. Elise is a Tokyo Olympian and 2-time U.S. champ in the 5,000m who came on the podcast to look back on her 2022 season as she wraps up a spin through the European race circuit. We talked about Elise's growth as a professional runner and her relationship with Bowerman coach Jerry Schumacher, including the difficult decision to scratch the U.S. 10,000m champs earlier this year and how it paid off in her racing season. We also talked a lot about the mental side of the sport an the importance of listening to your body and planning for your long-term success over short-term satisfaction. Elise also shared her post-season travel plans, her European laundry strategy, and of course, her love language. This episode of Run Your Mouth is presented by Nike. We've partnered with them to help share athletes' stories in a way that reflects the different reasons we all choose to run, work out, and find our part of the track and field community. In my conversations with athletes in all events and all levels over the years, one common theme I hear over and over again is that finding the unique ways running brings you joy is the best way to develop a happy lifelong relationship with the sport. Come run with Nike. For the everyday and common runner Nike is committed to motivating, standing by, listening to, and helping them from the starting line to the finish line and every inch, meter and mile in between. Whether it's a local race, a major marathon, or just a run with friends, get out there and run. Just do it. Check out the Nike Run Club app and come run with us. On training under Bowerman coach Jerry Schumacher: “I'm a pretty independent person to a fault. I'm still trying to work on being better at communicating [with my coaches], but with Jerry, the energy he brings is what I love most. He helps you believe that you can go do something special.” On skipping the U.S. 10,000m champs: “It was hard to forgo the 10k championships in the moment but in the end, showing up at USAs and focusing on the 5k was the right call. I don't think I'd be still going this far into the season if I didn't make that decision.” On planning for a long professional running career: “In this sport, it's so easy to get caught up in short-term goals. The sport takes so much patience and a lot of times it takes years and years of work before it pays off, but consistent work can be really powerful in the long term.”

On June 9, 2021, Olympian & American Record Holder Shelby Houlihan was banned from the sport of running for four years. Over the past 11 months, Shelby has done anything and everything to prove her innocence. She's done things that cost a fortune just to try and bring back the thing she loves: competing and training at the highest level possible. Despite mounting evidence helping prove her innocence, the AIU ruled Shelby Houlihan guilty of taking a performance-enhancing substance. This takes out four critical years of her career. As her coach, Jerry Schumacher says, “She just might be the best 1500m runner in the world this year, but we will never get the opportunity to find out. And that's a tragedy.” Shelby has devoted her whole life to reaching the pinnacle of the sport. She's gotten to where she is through hard work, passion, dedication, and a mindset like no other. Nowhere along the way has Shelby ever taken shortcuts or done anything illegal. At the youngest of ages growing up in Sioux City, Iowa, Shelby would tell her mom, “Mom, I'm going to be the best. I'm going to be somebody someday.” The one thing Shelby has not been able to do is to speak publicly about her ban due to not wanting to upset the AIU during her appeals process. Over the past 11 months, Shelby, her teammates, and her family have all been subject to extraordinary slander and hatred. This episode is Shelby's side of the story. What actually happened behind the scenes and how this process has affected her life. You may disagree or not believe in Shelby, but I sincerely ask you to listen to this episode. You will benefit greatly from hearing Shelby's vulnerability, heart, and openness in sharing her story. We could be here endlessly debating all the different facts of the case, evidence on both sides, and much more. But that's not what we're here to do. All we're here to do is give Shelby an opportunity to share her heart, give her side of the story in full, and give her the opportunity to answer every misconception about the situation. As Shelby's coach Shalane Flanagan stated, “We are living in a nightmare that we can't seem to wake up from.” I will always stand for those who I believe in. I believe in Shelby Houlihan and you should too. Shelby Houlihan is a hill I'm willing to die on. #justiceforshelby S H O W N O T E S Shelby's Website with additional info and all the studies and facts cited in today's conversation: https://www.clearshelby.com Shelby's Instagram: https://instagram.com/shelbo800?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= Shelby Houlihan's Suspension Is a Track & Field Tragedy: https://www.letsrun.com/news/2021/06/shelby-houlihans-suspension-is-a-track-field-tragedy/ You Don't Know Shelby Houlihan: https://www.womensrunning.com/culture/people/you-dont-know-shelby-houlihan/ Statement From Coach Jerry Schumacher: https://www.bowermantc.com/new-blog/2021/6/14/statement-from-coach-jerry-schumacher My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en

Run Your Mouth
From Canada With Love: with Gabriela DeBues-Stafford

This week's guest is Gabriela DeBues-Stafford, fresh off setting two Canadian records in two weeks in the indoor 3000m and 5000m. Even before her big breakout at BU this past weekend, Gabriela has been one of the world's best middle distance runners, finishing 5th in the 1500 at the Tokyo Olympics, with personal bests of 14:31 for 5k and 4:17 for the mile. We had a super engaging, fascinating conversation. She reflected on her Olympics performance, talked about her experience joining Bowerman Track Club in 2019, and the secrets to her success in her relationship with her coaches Jerry Schumacher and Shalane Flanagan. We also talked about her identity as a proud queer athlete, her reflections on the tragic 2021 death of Agnes Tirop, and, because it's Valentine's Day, the story of how she met her husband Rowan. Enjoy this conversation – especially with our new microphones, thanks to the support we get are lucky to get from the Citius Mag network – and happy Valentine's Day to all! If you love us as much as we love you, leave us a 5-star rating and your love letter in the reviews whenever you get your podcasts. On being an out and proud bisexual athlete: “Being bisexual comes with certain straight-passing privileges when I navigate the world, but on the flipside, there's a lot of bisexual erasure. When people see me and assume that I'm straight, they don't see me in my fullest sense. So I like to be loud and proud for all those young queer kids, to be a role model that I didn't necessarily have growing up, especially for people who are somewhere in the middle of the spectrum, seeing somebody who's more fluid in the way they identify is really powerful.” Reflecting on the Tokyo Olympics: “I'd give myself an A. A+ would've been a medal probably [….] with those top three, it was gonna take a really special day for me to get a medal. I just had to overcome so much self-doubt and so many health issues. It felt like the whole year I was playing catchup adapting to the program at BTC and dealing with my relapse of Graves' disease, and I don't think I realized at the time what a big ask that was.” On her relationship with BTC head coach Jerry Schumacher: “It's definitely a very healthy, very positive, even nurturing relationship. Jerry gives what every athlete needs and when I came to him I was very broken – mentally, emotionally, and physically scarred. He always holds me accountable, but I'm able to be very open with him and he's a very positive person.”

"I feel like I'm the best version of myself when he's around." It's a big weekend for professional runners Sinclaire Johnson and Craig Nowak! Sinclaire and her Union Athletics Club teammates just broke the DMR (distance medley relay) world record in Spokane, WA (Sinclaire ran the 800m leg), and Craig was tasked with pacing 1500m and the 3K. But when they're not racing, pacing, or record-breaking, Sinclaire and Craig live and train together in Portland, OR. On this episode, they share the story of how they met (at Oklahoma State University, where Sinclaire was a freshman and Craig was a fifth year senior), what it was like dating long-distance after Craig graduated, and moving in together. Sinclaire, an NCAA 1500m champion who signed with Nike after graduating, talks about her decision to leave the Bowerman Track Club last year and to join Union Athletics Club, where she is coached by Pete Julian. She talks about having that conversation with former coaches Jerry Schumacher and Shalane Flanagan, and about why the Bowerman training style wasn't working for her. And Craig talks about becoming "the pacer guy," about his role as an official pacer on race day, and about how he navigates his own racing goals with his pacing duties. “He said, ‘I want you to feel like you can take over this race. And take over early.' And I was like, ‘Wait, what?!'” This girl is on fire! Courtney Frerichs is a two-time Olympian for Team USA who just returned from Tokyo as a silver medalist! Courtney, who trains with Nike's Bowerman Track Club, competed in the 3000m steeplechase at the Tokyo Olympics, and made the final an exciting one when she made her move and took the lead with four laps to go. (A move she attributes both to coach Jerry Schumacher's plan and to her own quiet confidence and instinct taking over mid-race.) Courtney went into the Games as the American record holder in the 3000m steeplechase and as a world silver medalist, and just a week after returning from Tokyo, she competed at the Prefontaine Classic where she became the first American woman to go sub-9:00 in the steeplechase. On this episode, Courtney talks about the hard work she's done on her mental game leading up to this year's Olympic Track & Field Trials and, ultimately, the Olympics. She talks about what it was like being in Tokyo, gives a behind-the-scenes look at life in the athlete village (where she roomed with Team USA's 1500m runner Elle Purrier St. Pierre), and shares the mantras that helped her through it all. Even after her parents rescued her and pumped her full of calories and confidence in time for her to win three gold medals and a silver for Team USA, she made a promise to herself: She would never put herself through such a nightmare again. Jorgensen won the Olympic gold at the Rio Games in 2016 in triathlon, and announced a year later she would shift to running, with a focus on medaling in the marathon. Due to extended recovery after heel surgery to repair Haglund's deformity in May 2019, she didn't end up competing in the Olympic marathon trials last year—in early 2020, she decided to focus on the track.   “My goals in the marathon aren't changing. "I feel completely devastated, lost, broken, angry, confused and betrayed by the very sport that I've loved and poured myself into just to see how good I was. I want to be very clear. I have never taken any performance-enhancing substances. And that includes that of which I am being accused. I believe in the sport and pushing your body to the limit just to see where the limit is. I'm not interested in cheating. I don't do this for the accolades, money, or for people to know my name. I do this because I love it. I have so much fun doing it and it's always the best part of my day.” On Wednesday afternoon, a virtual press conference was held by the Bowerman Track Club where it was announced Shelby Houlihan, the American record holder in the 1500 meters and 5000 meters, has been suspended for four years after testing positive for the banned substance Nandrolone. The test was taken in December 2020 and she was notified of the positive test in January by the Athletics Integrity Unit. The reason she has not raced in 2021 is that she was provisionally suspended while trying to fight the case. Upon learning of the positive test, Houlihan logged her meals and determined that the nandrolone likely came from a burrito that she consumed the night before her test. It is estimated that the test took place 10 hours after the burrito's consumption. Lawyer Paul Greene was hired and argued that pig organ meat can serve as one of the sources for Nandrolone. Because the Athletics Integrity Unit had not charged her yet, Greene and Houlihan's team called on them to charge her with a violation so she could appeal before the start of the U.S. Olympic Trials. Last week, on June 11, she learned that her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was unsuccessful and the four-year ban was upheld. A four-year ban knocks the 28-year-old out of the Trials, the Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 World Championships in Eugene and the 2024 Olympics in Tokyo in the prime of her career. A full decision and report from the Court of Arbitration for Sport will be published when it is finalized. What you're about to hear is the audio from the press conference and the prepared statements from Greene, Houlihan and Bowerman Track Club coaches Jerry Schumacher and Shalane Flanagan. What follows after is questions from the media present. You can read about the case in my story for Sports Illustrated: https://www.si.com/olympics/2021/06/15/shelby-houlihan-doping-ban-nandrolone-olympic-trials-positive-test-explained You can watch the statements by Houlihan, Schumacher and Flanagan on the CITIUS MAG YouTube page.

"We sat down and [Jerry Schumacher's] big thing was that he thinks everyone kind of has their ideal race distance. For some people, it's the 1,500m. For other people, it's the 5K. For some people, it's the 3K so if you're going to run the 3K at the professional level, you also need to be able to hurdle. He said he didn't really know what that was going to be for me, but he thought the steeplechase could be something that I'd be potentially good at and would maybe want to experiment with if I join the team. I kind of knew where his head was at before I joined the team." Sean McGorty is a member of the Bowerman Track Club. Way before that he was a standout runner out of Virginia who went on to become an NCAA champion at Stanford. Since graduating in 2018, he’s run personal bests of 3:36.61 for 1,500m, 3:55.21 for the mile, 13:06.45 for the 5K and most recently 8:20.77 for the 3,000m steeplechase. His win in his steeplechase debut at the USATF Golden Games gave him the Olympic standard and now an option to possibly make that team for Tokyo this summer. However, maybe two years ago all of that would’ve seemed distant since he was facing a mysterious infection that required multiple surgeries to alleviate. He made a comeback from that last summer and hasn’t looked back since. You’ll hear more about that mystery and why he still has no answers behind it. Plus his outlook on the 5K and steeplechase scene ahead of the U.S. Olympic Trials.

"Nike was trying to offer me less than what they offered me when I came out of college. To me, it was just a slap in the face. I was like, ‘I've made the Olympic team. I'm pretty much, you know, not to sound cocky, but like I'm probably going to make another Olympic team. I've made five USA teams since I graduated. How could I possibly be worth less than I was when I came out of college?’ They were able to come up a little bit when I was just straight up, like, ‘No. That's not a starting point.’ And they came up a little bit, but I'm still making almost three times what that was, with the same bonus structure, with the same incentives and no reductions. So now I don't have to worry about ‘Oh you didn't race ten races this year.’ Yeah like I've raced eight. Who really cares? I didn't make it off by doing things like the local turkey trot to get my tenth race. Lululemon isn’t ticky tacky and counting every little thing. They want me to be happy. They want me to live the values that their brand holds to be important, which I also believe in and stand behind. They want to be a good ambassador for their brand, which I always felt like I did for Nike. I always felt like I was a good ambassador for their brand, but it just was never enough." Colleen Quigley was a previous guest on this show back in February 2018. Now, she’s back with some BIG news. After five years of training with the Nike Bowerman Track Club, she announced she was leaving the team in January. Under coach Jerry Schumacher and Pascal Dobert, the FSU grad became one of the best U.S. female steeplechasers and has made every U.S. national team since the 2015 world championships. She’s the 3rd fastest U.S. steeplechaser ever with a 9:10.27 PR. She’s run 4:03.02 for 1,500m & 4:20 for the mile. She is now coached by Portland State’s Josh Steitz and will be running for Lululemon. That’s the big news. That’s her new sponsor. You’ll hear all about that decision and more.

“You just run so much when you're training for the marathon that if you don't truly love it, you won't really enjoy it. I think for most of my career prior to that I was so focused on performance and valuing the competition and what it gave me from that standpoint but I think as I transitioned to the marathon I really became interested in this idea of running for running's sake. And as I started to do that I started to notice other people. You go to a marathon, whether it be Boston or Chicago or wherever, you're immersed in a sea of runners—you're starting on the line with forty or fifty thousand other people and everyone has a different story of why they're there and how they got there.” Andrew Bumbalough is a recently retired professional athlete who spent the entirety of his career training and racing with the Bowerman Track Club, where he put up personal bests ranging from 3:37 for 1500m to 2:10 for the marathon. Amongst his numerous accomplishments, he finished 5th at the 2018 Boston Marathon, represented the U.S. in the 5000m at the 2011 world championships on the track, and won a national 5K title on the roads in 2013. We had a wide-ranging conversation that I really enjoyed and I think you will too. We talked about Bumbi's last race—the Olympic Trials Marathon, where he dropped out at 16 miles—and when he knew it was time to retire from the sport. He told me about his 10-year relationship with coach Jerry Schumacher and what makes him such a successful coach, what his relationship with running has looked like since he retired, and how his body has responded to the reduced training load. We discussed getting into coaching and how he approaches working with a wide range of athletes, the work he's done in footwear product innovation and how technology advances have changed what's possible in both training and racing, what he makes of some of the eye-popping times we've seen on the track and roads over the past year, and a lot more. "If the Olympics had been held last year, I think I would have had a pretty outside shot of making the team. Maybe if things went perfect, I could have maybe snagged a third or something. But at the same time, I didn't even have the standard. It's tough to say but I do think this extra year has kind of served me pretty well. My confidence is much higher that I can make this team. It’s going to be incredibly hard. I don't think you should count out anybody in this situation." I’ve covered Grant Fisher's career since he was running for Grand Blanc (MI) High School and won the Dream Mile at the 2015 Adidas Grand Prix. He went on to become the seventh U.S. high school runner to break four minutes for the mile. He was a 12-time All-American and an NCAA champion in the 5,000 meters while at Stanford. He turned professional and signed with the Nike Bowerman Track Club in 2019. He’s thriving under Jerry Schumacher's training with personal bests of 13:02.53 for 5,000 meters and 27:11.29 for 10,000 meters. He’s got both Olympic standards in his back pocket ahead of the trials. We unpack those recent performances. We look back at his high school career and career development. Of course, we discussed shoe technology. As a bonus: We discuss the famous LetsRun thread saying: "Grant Fisher is not the best kid in Michigan." Grant is also a podcaster now. When people are at their best and everything is comfortable and good or everything is going their way, it’s not really a fair assessment of their character. I think it’s a lot more insightful how someone acts when they’re down and facing adversity. That’s exactly what I was dealing with at that moment. Nike's Win-At-All-Costs Culture : Matt Hart - 2020-12-15

Is Nike too big to fail? Matt Hart is a freelance journalist whose new book Win at all Costs investigates Nike’s Oregon Project, diving into its culture of cheating, lying, and misogyny. The book is a page-turning sports thriller reminiscent of a Shakespearean drama with one of the top coaches in the world felled by hubris. Coach Claire talks to Matt about the rise and fall of former coach Alberto Salazar, if he is indeed a villain through and through, the win-at-all-costs mindset of sports today, how young athletes are affected, the women at Nike, if Nike has some redeeming qualities as an organization, and if most people even care about any of this. It’s a fascinating discussion that is sure to appeal to true crime fans! Matt Hart’s writing covers sports science, human-powered adventure and exploration, performance-enhancing drugs, nutrition, and evolution. His work has appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, and Men’s Journal magazine, among others. His reporting on the investigations into Salazar appeared on the front page, above the fold, of The New York Times in May 2017. In addition to his access to the Gouchers, other sources for the book include former Nike employees, athletes, and coaches; famed sports-scientist and Oregon Project whistleblower Steve Magness; and Olympic marathon gold medalist Frank Shorter, among many others. About Matt’s Book WIN AT ALL COSTS: In May 2017, journalist Matt Hart received a USB drive containing a single file—a 4.7-megabyte PDF named “Tic Toc, Tic Toc. . . .” He quickly realized he was in possession of a stolen report prepared a year earlier by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). It was part of an investigation into legendary running coach Alberto Salazar, a Houston-based endocrinologist named Dr. Jeffrey Brown, and the cheating by Nike-sponsored runners. The file began Hart’s reporting on the Nike Oregon Project and led him to uncover a win-at-all-costs culture of greed, corporate malfeasance, and abuse.  WIN AT ALL COSTS is an explosive and revealing narrative depicting the deception and performance-enhancing drug use at the Nike Oregon Project. Hart writes richly detailed portraits of athletes Kara and Adam Goucher, Galen Rupp, and Mo Farah, as well as the coaches and doctors at the root of the cheating. The book recounts how the  secretive program began to unravel when Steve Magness, an assistant coach to Salazar broke the code of silence by alerting USADA. He was followed by Olympians Adam and Kara Goucher who, risking their prosperous careers, became whistleblowers on their former Nike running family at headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.  Combining sports drama and corporate exposé, WIN AT ALL COSTS uncovers a relentless culture of deceit and drug misuse at Nike; as well as abuse of power, gender discrimination, medical malpractice, and systemic cheating at the highest levels of professional athletics. The book is also a cautionary tale about the excess of greed, corporate malfeasance, and the pushing of athletic boundaries. Deeply researched, unsettling, and ultimately entertaining, WIN AT ALL COSTS will astonish readers by the extremes that coaches and athletes will go to achieve athletic greatness—no matter the cost.     Questions Matt is asked:   3:20 On your website, you say that humans learn through storytelling.  What made you want to tell the story of Nike and its infamous coach, Alberto Salazar?   4:28 Your new book, Win At All Costs, is a fascinating deep dive into the world of Nike, from its scrappy, rebel beginnings to the behemoth brand that it is today.  Essentially, it's a "David becomes Goliath" story.  How would you describe the changes that the company went through from its humble beginnings to today?   6:33 Let's talk about Alberto Salazar.  When he started out as an athlete he became one of the greatest American marathoners, and then became an absolute legend as a coach. I was struck reading your book how Skakespearean he really is. He’s like this man in power brought down by his hubris.  How would you describe him as an athlete, coach, and father?   10:18 It’s easy to paint Alberto Salazar as the evil cult leader who got everybody under his spell, but how do you see that? Obviously there were people complicit in it and athletes at the top of the sport, some of them are willing to do anything to get ahead too. So how do you see it? Do you see Alberto as just the evil cult leader or is it more complicated than that?   13:25 Galen Rupp was what, 15 or 16 when he began to be coached by Alberto? That’s a child, and you’re not really able to make decisions, especially when somebody who has a reputation like Alberto comes into your life and says, “Hey, I see something special in you. Let me take you under my wing.” I have a lot of sympathy for Galen Rupp. I know not everybody in the running community does, but I do. But he’s an adult now, so we’ll see what happens with his career.    15:12 It’s like you want to hate Nike for all of the things that they’ve done, but yet they also have the Bowerman Track Club which is like women supporting women. Shalane Flanagan is now one of the coaches there. If you look at them on Instagram, it’s just like picture perfect empowerment and everything that it’s supposed to be. It’s just like how can you have two things like that in the same town and in the same company?   17:56 It’s easy to kind of say, okay, Alberto was the bad apple, but we’ve got Jerry Schumacher and he’s the best, and he’s wonderful, and still that Nike is just that one guy. But a lot of the stuff you talk about goes higher up than just Alberto Salazar. It goes to everybody above him, and I thought that it was really eye opening when you talked about salaries. In the world of running, it’s very secretive how much pro runners make, and you were able to find out that Kara Goucher got paid $35,000 while her husband Adam got paid $90,000 when they joined. Can you talk about that and about why they were willing to tell you that?   20:11 Compared to just about any other professional sport, coaches’ salaries all seemed incredibly low. And maybe it’s because obviously running doesn’t bring in the money that the NFL does. We don’t sit around watching running, at least not too many people do, which still I think is very bizarre that there’s millions and millions of runners in the United States and yet track and field and running is not that interesting to people. Why do you think that is? Why doesn’t running have the fan base that baseball or the NFL or something like that does?   22:24 I coach a lot of athletes and many of them just simply aren’t interested in what the elites do. And this leads me to my question for you. This whole scandal with the Nike Oregon Project, has it affected Nike at all as far as sales? People are still buying their shoes, right?   24:28 Nike is still paying for the defense of Alberto Salazar. Any insight on why?   26:13 Did you interview Mary Cain for the book?   26:57 Alberto was a son figure and a father figure and so many of the athletes say that, “He’s like a father. I love… “ Even Kara Goucher was like, “He’s a father figure to me. He’s the best,” and all of that, and now it’s a very different story.   28:26 You talk in the book about how Alberto Salazar who has $1 million budget or something, he has access to the latest technology, and massage therapists, and all of that, he would personally massage Galen Rupp, and there’s a couple things that you might be suspicious are going on there when that happens, but it seems like that was the testosterone. Is that what you found? It just seems weird to me.   31:29 There were stories of athletes being prescribed things for ailments that they didn’t have. Everybody on the team had a thyroid problem all of a sudden. And then there were the L-Carnitine infusions, and obviously infusing yourself with anything is against clean sport. But when they were caught, they just said, “Oh, it didn’t do anything for me.” Do you want to talk a little bit about the whole infusion story?   34:26 Is there a USADA test for L-Carnitine, because it’s an amino acid?   35:06 I’m surprised L-Carnitine hasn’t become more of the thing because to be perfectly honest, when this whole story broke, I was training for a marathon and I went to GNC and got myself some L-Carnitine. People see this and hear this, recreational runners or sub-elites, and they’re like, “Huh, that’s interesting.” And yet, they go ahead and follow that gray line. It’s almost like exposing the truth encourages more people to cheat, do you think?   37:44 I’d love to talk a little bit about the women at Nike. We learned all about Kara Goucher and her reduction clause. So when she decided to have a baby, she basically was not paid. So she was not paid for a very long period of time while she still was technically working for Nike. Again, this goes back to the contracts being super, super secretive. Do you think at least that has changed in the world of running for women as far as how they’re treated when they decide to have a family?   40:09 What do you feel is the future of sports and running and Nike?   42:52 Hopefully with the good example of the Bowerman Track Club, Nike might be able to change for the better from the inside, and then with work like yours, hopefully will change for the better from the outside.   44:13 Matt, what’s next for you with your running and your writing? Questions I ask everyone:   45:01 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give?   46:15 What is the greatest gift running has given you?   46:51 Where can listeners connect with you?   Quotes by Matt:   “As an athlete, I learned this through the reporting, that Alberto Salazar would try basically anything to try to improve performance. Now that’s not all drugs and illicit means. That’s kind of anything from massage to dry needling to whatever else might be in the popular culture of athletes at the time.”   “Athletes at the end of the day are 100% responsible for what they put into their body. Any athlete that’s working with Alberto Salazar, it does want to aggressively pursue hard training and they’ll do kind of whatever they’re asked or whatever they think can help them stand on top of the podium, and that’s the win at all costs sort of zero sum game that sports have become.”   “Of the $36 billion Nikes makes a year, some $4.6 billion of it is the run category, and so that’s I think their largest category, to sell to runners. Now it’s a different question of whether we want to watch those runners run.”   “You have to imagine years of training at a level you simply couldn’t maintain without drugs changes you physiologically. You’re steps ahead or you’re stronger or you’re faster. And so, that’s a whole other discussion, the long-term benefits of drugs and is someone still a cheat if they’ve gotten off them.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Coach Chris Bennett joins the podcast. His voice might be familiar to you if you've ever used the Nike Run Club training app. He is the Swoosh's global head coach. He's been a longtime supporter of CITIUS MAG and I've always wanted to get him on the show. Now seems to be the perfect time because it feels like we're on the cusp of a potential running boom once the pandemic subsides. People are getting out there whether it's part of their regular routine and training or they're discovering the sport for the very first time. I have a few friends who are getting started and they don't have a GPS watch or Strava so they simply have downloaded the Nike app and started going on these guided runs with Bennett. We spend much of the first half discussing what that's been like to see and then we'll take a dive into his own career from being a New Jersey star, running for UNC, learning from coaches like Jerry Schumacher, Vin Lananna and Frank Gagliano, returning to coach at Christian Brothers Academy (where they became a national powerhouse), what his mantra Every Run Has a Purpose means and ultimately watching his son now come after his own PRs. ▶ Follow Coach Bennett: https://www.instagram.com/coachbennett/ Support CITIUS MAG & pick up some merch on CITIUSMAG.com ▶ Follow us: twitter.com/CitiusMag | instagram.com/citiusmag | facebook.com/citiusmag ✩ Connect with Chris via Email: chris@citiusmag.com | twitter.com/ChrisChavez | instagram.com/chris_j_chavez

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Chris Solinsky's 26:59 10,000-meter run, this week we dropped an extra podcast with Solinsky as the guest. Our regular podcast will come out later. By now, his 26:59 has been discussed and broken down in amazing detail -- heck, our own Jonathan Gault wrote 6,000+ words about it -- so we only spent the first 10 minutes or so of our chat with Chris talking about that. After the 26:59 talk, we spent a lot of time talking about the rest of Solinsky's magical 2010 season, during which he ran 12:56 or faster for 5,000 three times in the span of 77 days -- a feat that has only been achieved six times by any American, ever. We also got Solinsky to talk about his vision for the University of Florida as he's currently the men's and women's distance coach at Florida. Chris also told a really cool Eliud Kipchoge story. This week's podcast is brought to you by the TheFeed.com. TheFeed.com has everything you need to perform at your best and try and stay healthy. Show notes: 0:00 We talk about the 26:59 for nearly the first ten minutes 09:15 We talk about the rest of Solinsky's 2010 campaign, during which he broke 13:00 three times 23:10 Solinsky talks about the first time he broke 13:00 and tells a cool story about how Eliud Kipchoge -- whom he beat badly in the race -- was the first person to congratulate him. 26:10 Solinsky talks about dreaming big and what Jerry Schumacher has taught him about coaching in the NCAA. 33:30 Solinsky talks about what drew him to the University of Florida and his vision for the distance program 38:40 Solinsky responds to those who think his huge improvements in times in 2010 mean he was a doper 43:30 We asked Chris about how many of the greats in US distance running history -- himself, Salazar, Hall, Webb -- didn't have really long careers. Chris talks about this and reveals what he thinks his peak fitness was. Got audio feedback for the show? Fake Galen Rupp where are you? Call 844-LetsRun (844-538-7786) and hit option 7. "When I was younger I really struggled with separating myself from sport. I really believed that how I performed is what defined me and I started to perform way better once I was able to separate myself from sport and realize that sport does not define me. And that's something that's just been huge for me." Really enjoyed talking to Gwen Jorgensen for this week's episode of the podcast. The 33-year-old Jorgensen is the reigning Olympic champion in triathlon, who, in late 2017, announced she was retiring from multi-sport racing to turn her attention to running full-time. Her goal: Olympic gold in the marathon. In early 2018, Jorgensen signed with Nike and joined the Bowerman Track Club to train alongside 2017 New York City Marathon champion Shalane Flanagan and reigning Olympic Trials marathon champion Amy Cragg under the watchful eye of coach Jerry Schumacher. We covered a lot of ground in this conversation, including Jorgensen's recent surgery to repair a Haglund's deformity in her right heel and how she's dealt with it from both a training and psychological standpoint, the importance of separating yourself from sport and having balance in your life, last fall's Chicago Marathon and why she didn't feel that it was a fair representation of what she's capable of in that event, reflections on her first full season of training as a runner, learning from Amy Cragg and Shalane Flanagan, what it's been like going from being at the top of one sport to an underdog in a different one, how she's learned to get comfortable sharing her story (and struggles) with a large audience, why the Olympic gold medal in the marathon is still her goal, and a lot more. "Like I want to make people happy, and do the right thing, and be successful. And I think a lot of people end up getting sucked into that and then have to be like, 'Wait, why am I doing this?' 'Do I want to be here?' 'Why did I make these choices?' and you have to rethink it and figure out what actually makes you happy and what you actually want to do. Luckily, just being competitive and wanting to get better and better and better at running has turned out pretty good for me because, when I sit back, I do love what I'm doing. But it is something you have to be careful of—like, 'Why am I so obsessed at being so good at that? Or not failing? Maybe it's OK. And I think that's something I'll probably be working with the rest of my life." Stoked to welcome Olympian Colleen Quigley to the podcast this week! She competed in that event at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she finished eighth, and has represented the United States multiple times in international competition. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Quigley had a stellar 2018 campaign, winning the Wannamaker Mile at the Millrose Games, qualifying for the world indoor championships in the 1500m, putting up personal bests in the 1000m, 1500m, and steeplechase, winning two race races in Europe, and finishing second to Jenny Simpson in the Fifth Ave. Mile to close out the year. The nomadic Quigley and I caught up a few weeks ago in San Francisco before she took off for altitude camp and we covered a wide range of topics, including her morning routine, how she's dealt with injuries throughout her career, what it was like to be coached by her dad in high school and the importance of keeping the sport fun during those formative years, making the decision to postpone a modeling career in order to run collegiately at Florida State, deciding to join the Bowerman Track Club after college, the influence Shalane Flanagan has had on her professional career and how her relationship with coach Jerry Schumacher has evolved over the last few years, fear of rejection and how's she's dealt with it throughout her life, her competitiveness and where she gets it comes from, the origins of #fastbraidfriday, what she's excited about in 2019, and a whole lot more. “It's addicting to have a great performance. You always want another one. That's why I considered stopping after New York because it was like, ‘How can I top this?' And then only thing that can top this or be on the same level, is winning in Boston because of what the people and the city mean to me. There's just as much fire but I definitely feel at peace, which is actually a good thing. I feel very calm and calculated with my approach and I feel very confident that I know how to get the most out of myself now.” Absolutely thrilled to welcome four-time Olympian and reigning New York City Marathon champion Shalane Flanagan to the podcast. She joined me last week from her altitude training base in Woodland Park, Colorado and we covered a wide range of subjects, from her preparation for April's Boston Marathon, which has included training with Olympic triathlon gold medalist turned aspiring marathoner Gwen Jorgensen (“This woman is a beast,” Flanagan said of Jorgensen. “She is all-in and wants to be really great.”), to how coach Jerry Schumacher has modified recent marathon buildups for herself and teammate Amy Cragg, what's different for her going into Boston this time around after winning last fall in New York, as well as why—and how—she convinced her coach to bring more women into the Bowerman Track Club training group a few years ago. “It feels good to look around in our training environment and be like, ‘Man, there's a lot of badass women here,'” the 36-year-old Flanagan told me. “We've got just so much talent and hard work. I take so much confidence [from them] and I get the swagger when they perform well. It makes me feel so good. There are times they perform well and it feels way better than anything I've personally achieved. No matter what, whoever's competing, I get this sense of fulfillment, and it keeps me motivated to keep going.” Flanagan and I also talked in depth about her New York City win, including what she was thinking and experiencing during the final few miles of the race, why breaking the tape in Central Park was so validating for her, as well as the different ways in which the historic victory has changed her life. “I wasn't going to earn the title of New York City Marathon champion ten years later,” Flanagan recounted. “I was going to earn it and own it in that moment and it could never be taken away. I just felt so validated that I kept pursuing the dream because it seemed really dark and dismal at times. And I think that was a huge component of my celebration that I finally freaking did it.” We got into how she's approaching the remainder of her career, what's helped her to stay relatively injury free and allowed her to perform at a high level for so long, the importance of relating to other runners, and how she navigates those moments when it's hard to muster the motivation to get out the door and train. “I think it's important to show that not every day is a picnic,” she admitted, “but of course I went for a run and I got it done and at various moments I was just chanting “Boston!” to myself because that's the only reason while I'm out there doing it, because I want to have a chance on April 16. And so, it's worth it, but for sure, there's days where you're just like, ‘Why am I doing this?'” Finally, we discussed how running gave her confidence as a young girl and fueled her competitiveness, what's exciting her right now in the world of professional running, and why getting injured before Boston last year was a blessing in disguise. Alan Webb, the American record holder in the mile, joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to take a trip down memory lane and catch up on what he's up to nowadays. Webb retired from track in 2014 and then made a run for the 2016 Olympics in the triathlon. The triathlon chapter did not pan out as planned and he now owns a truck repair business in Oregon. "For me, I started to kind of take on a different mentality," Webb says. "I started to enjoy watching others be in that moment. You kind of know when someone is building that momentum and seeing it...You just have a genuine appreciation of someone going through something you felt...It changed for me and that's when I started to know that it was time to step away." "It became hard to genuinely give it everything I had," Webb adds. "I couldn't dig down deep like I used to. That's when I was like 'You're not digging!' It was hard. It was honestly hard mentally to dig down deep. I wasn't what I would recommend to someone else. If I was coaching I wouldn't want them to do what I was doing...I would give up sometimes. That was hard. Knowing I was doing that." We delve into the magic of that 2007 season and what the impact was of that 3:46.91 at a tiny meet in in Brasschaat, Belgium. We did start to think about how long does he think the record will stand. The closest someone has come is 3:50.53 by Matt Centrowitz in May 2014 and that’s still 4 seconds off. Among the questions explored: What was it like stepping off the track at the Millrose Games and retiring at 31 years old? Does he believe in the idea that runners who thrive so early in their careers simply can’t maintain that peak? We get the full rundown on Webb's weight room training including how much he would bench before his races and what his routine was.  What's the deepest that he's ever had to dig for a race? As he begins his coaching career soon, what coach from his career does he think he may resonate the most with? He was coached by Scott Raczko, Alberto Salazar, Ron Warhurst, Jason Vigilante, Jerry Schumacher and Jon Marcus in his career. Whose career would you rather have: Webb's, Ryan Hall's, or Dathan Ritzenhein's? Can Webb make the case for why they should pick him? Or does he have a different opinion? We take a few listener questions and more. ------- This episode was brought to you by Maurten. It’s been a big few years for professional runner and Olympian Kate Grace. In 2016, the Yale graduate won the Olympic Trials in the 800-meter event in Eugene, OR, and went on to represent Team USA in Rio, where she finished eighth. She chased that with a personal best in the 800 meters in Zurich, running a 1:59.47. A few months later, Kate's contract with Oiselle, her sponsor of four years and her first major professional sponsor, was up, and she announced her decision to join Nike, the industry behemoth despised by many at Oiselle. Then, this past fall, Kate officially joined Portland, OR-based Bowerman Track Club, where she now trains alongside some of professional running’s greatest, fastest women, including Shalane Flanagan, Amy Cragg, and Emily Infeld, and is coached by Jerry Schumacher. On this episode, Kate lets us all inside the head of a hardworking athlete and Olympian. She shares what it’s like training with some of the fastest women in the world, and talks about the “not glamorous” parts of racing. She explains her recent sponsorship decisions, breaks down how to master the 800m, and talks about why the 800-meter race at the Trials was “a shitshow.” Plus, Kate shares what it’s like competing at the Oympics — and what the athlete’s village is really like — and talks about how to deal with injuries, her fitness-world-famous mom, the comeback she’s hoping for this February, and what’s next. In her lowest state, after a couple weeks of coping via snarfing down peanut butter and bon bons in bed, Emily persevered by accepting where she was and giving her best on that given day. Her strategies worked as she competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics and earned a 3rd place in the World Championship finals.
