I often speak about my health goals: progress as slowly as possible, don't fall, don't mess with my pathological optimism, and continue playing the baritone saxophone. I haven't been able to play due to issues with my back, decreasing mobility, and the weight of the big 25-pound horn hanging around my neck. I've been playing an average of an hour a day for the past 18 months. The more I play, the more equipment I accumulate and lug around. One place I rehearse weekly has 2 flights of steep steps. It's been getting more difficult and riskier to climb those stairs. I know that I could get band mates to haul equipment for me. That's not the problem. I haven't been able to stand and play for 15 years. I sit. But I spent the last couple of weeks not able to sit for more than 15 minutes at a time. If I can't sit and hold the sax with a shoulder harness, I can't play. What are my options?

Sarah Anne Shockley discovered the area between her clavicle and first ribs had collapsed in 2007. She tried everything she could to rid herself of the pain, but nothing worked. With no solution in place, she focused on living life as best she could. She endured the pain and tried medications. She refused to believe that she had to live in chronic pain for the rest of her life. Since external treatments didn’t help, Sarah Anne looked inside. She found she was living with a lot of emotional distress regarding her physical pain, upset that she couldn’t participate fully in her life. There is a lot of shame and guilt connected to chronic pain. Outside sources find clever ways to tell you you’re wrong for having your pain. Pain is a signal that something is amiss. Once I developed a toothache over a holiday weekend. The dentist was unavailable and I was having difficulty processing the pain. In her wisdom, my mother said, “Relax. The pain will fade in a few hours and you will be able to manage until the dentist returns.” She was right and I was fortunate. When it comes to physical pain, especially chronic pain, there are many who are less fortunate.According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, 100 million Americans suffer chronic pain. Compare that with the 25.8 million who are dealing with diabetes and 16.3 million experiencing heart disease. The estimated cost of health care and lost wages to pain treatment is 800 billion dollars. Add to that the tragedy of those who become addicted to pain medications and the outlook is quite grim.What if there was another way to look at chronic pain and in doing so come to terms with it?
