Chronic Pain can feel like a heavy weight, dragging you down and limiting your happiness. But here's some great news: contracted stretching could be your ticket to relief.Thousands have discovered how this technique can help ease their pain and improve their mobility. In fact in 2007 I discovered this amazing technique and saved myself from multiple surgeries! So, what is contracted stretching? It's a simple yet effective method that involves stretching a muscle while it's in a contracted state.Instead of just relaxing a muscle and then stretching it, you keep it engaged and tight. This technique enhances flexibility and helps release tension stored in the muscle. Here's how it works:When you contract a muscle and then stretch it, you send a clear message to your brain. It signals that this muscle is ready to lengthen, resulting in a deeper and more effective and safer stretch.Let's say you're dealing with tight hamstrings.(Don't we all???)To use contracted stretching, lie on your back and lift one leg straight up keeping the opposite leg long on the floor. Now, flex your foot and pull your toes towards you while keeping your hamstrings engaged. Now using either a strap or your hand behind your leg kick away making the muscles work as you lower the leg against that pressureAt the bottom…Keep the muscles engaged and pull in against the resistance to a full deep stretch.Feel the difference?Repeat that 5 to 7 times to strengthen and stretch your central hamstrings. This method doesn't just feel good; it can help release chronic tension and pain.Incorporating contracted stretching into your routine can transform how your body feels.Whether it's tight shoulders, achy hips, or sore back muscles, this technique can help you regain your mobility and ease discomfort. So, why not give it a try?You have nothing to lose but the pain!Start with just a few minutes a day, and see how your body responds.Remember, relief is within your reach.Get started with contracted stretching and join the many who've found their path to pain-free living!Move well, stay healthy, be happy, find your purpose and live every day with passion. The 5% Club is a reader-supported publication. Summary:Psychologist Dr. Afton Hassett and Cheryl Crow, OT explore the neuroscience behind chronic pain and how its interconnection with fatigue, sleep, stress, and emotions may affect your experience of pain over time. Dr. Hassett is an Associate Professor and Director of Pain and Opioid Research in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan. In this episode, she explains how pain is not "all in your head," however it is in your BRAIN! Because the areas of your brain that process pain overlap with the areas that process thoughts and emotions, there is much you can do to influence pain signals. Further, there is evidence that building your resilience through mindfulness, social support, optimism, and healthy lifestyle habits can positively alter how the brain perceives pain.Dr. Hassett also shares lessons from her soon-to-be-released book, The Chronic Pain Reset, and Cheryl shares how she developed her Rheum to THRIVE course and program to help address the full picture of chronic pain patients' needs.Episode at a glance:Professional background: Dr. Hassett studied clinical psychology in San Diego, where she received her doctorate. She now works as an Associate Professor and principal investigator at University of Michigan in the renowned Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center, one of the largest Chronic Pain Research centers in the world.Pain Science 101: Pain is not “all in your head”... but the brain processes pain using many of the same areas and structures of your brain that process emotions and thoughts. Thus, our thoughts, emotions, and life context can greatly affect how pain is processed and experienced. Tools for Fatigue: Pain, poor sleep, poor mood, and lack of energy often group together and affect each other - if you can improve one it can help improve the others. Saving “spoons” for relationships and supportive connections and spending time outside getting fresh air and sunshine can also help improve symptoms of fatigue. Tips for building resilience and optimism: Cope with uncertainty by practicing mindfulness, make time to do the things you love and value even with some lingering pain, and keep a gratitude journal or other practices to help you stay centered and increase positive emotions.Advice to newly-diagnosed patients: Seek a mentor who can help you navigate, find ways to do activities that feel purposeful to you, and know that you've got this!Chronic Pain Reset book: Set to release September 5, 2023, Dr. Hassett wrote this book for people with chronic pain and their care providers. She begins by explaining the neuroscience of chronic pain the connection between pain and stress, social relationships, positive and negative emotions, gratitude, joy, and physical health. The second part of the book leads you through a 30-day journey to try evidence-based activities and practices to find the ones you like best. The last part of the book helps you customize a program filled with activities that make sense to you and address multiple domains of wellness.Medical disclaimer: All content found on Arthritis Life public channels was created for generalized informational purposes only. Kate Bowler has always worked extremely hard. As the daughter of two academics growing up in Canada, she preferred books to sports, and liked talking and thinking about the nuances of her faith. “I never really thought about my body very much in time and space,” Kate told Anna. But while starting her career as an academic, Kate's relationship with her body changed. She was diagnosed with a joint laxity disorder in her 20s. And at 35, not long after having her son, Kate was diagnosed with stage IV cancer, changing her relationship to productivity and rest once again, which she also chronicled in her New York Times best selling memoir, Everything Happens For A Reason (And Other Lies I've Loved). Kate tells Anna about the shame of not living up to her own expectations, learning to let go, and what brings her joy.

She was an environmental engineer for the last 20 years and got several sick leaves because of the disease and during the longer one (2018-2020) She is slowly transitioning to her real passion, healing, coaching people on how to reduce and ease the pain and symptoms of inflammation in general, since she strongly believes that inflammation is the link between all the « dis » « ease » and most common health issues of our society today. Genevieve's advice for single parents: Find fixed moment, allow a specific time in your crazy schedule once a day or at least few a week to keep it strictly for yourself.
