Learn from this inspiring journey how innovative technology is being used to address the systemic challenges within foster care, with Dr. Jennifer Jacobs, co-founder and CEO of Connect Our Kids. She shares how they're working to provide tools to make a difference for the lives of over 400,000 children currently in the foster care system. Watch on video! An amazing series of connections. . . . . . . . Dr. Jacobs, whose background in nuclear engineering and counter-terrorism may seem unrelated to child welfare at first glance, was motivated to take action after reading about the foster care crisis. She discovered alarming parallels between the methods used to map terrorist networks and the processes that could be adapted to find families for foster children. “The foster care community does similar work with Post-it notes and Microsoft Excel,” Jacobs pointed out, highlighting the severe resource limitations faced by social workers. Her organization's groundbreaking software helps social workers efficiently locate biological family members, strengthening critical kinship ties that can profoundly affect a child's well-being. For example, Dr. Jacobs shares the heart-wrenching story of Kelly, a foster child who was repeatedly moved between homes. After being asked what would help her most, Kelly responded, "I want people in my life who aren't paid to be there." Using Connect Our Kids' tools, Kelly was reunited with her biological family in just 20 minutes—a life-changing moment that allowed her to finally begin healing!! The conversation between host Wendy Adams and Dr. Jacobs amplifies the crucial role of relationships in a child's development. Dr. Jacobs elaborates on the science behind this, commenting, “Relationships are key to the wiring of the brain,” which makes family and kinship connections indispensable for long-term emotional and mental health. Watch this fascinating conversation and you'll agree that while technology alone cannot solve the foster care crisis, it is an essential tool that, when paired with compassionate, skilled social workers, it can dramatically improve outcomes for children in need.Find us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Today's Podcast: “Our vision is that child welfare is enabled, as a system, to support families and children rather than to separate them.” -Jennifer Jacobs, USMA ‘93 Jennifer Jacobs is the CEO and Co-founder of Connect Our Kids, a technology nonprofit dedicated to helping social workers, lawyers, family recruiters, and CASA/GAL volunteers find supportive family connections and natural support networks for America's most vulnerable. The organization's advanced tech tools speed up and scale up techniques for finding extended family members and other caring adults for children in foster care. Jennifer has applied her technical expertise gained from working in nuclear counterterrorism as an Army Officer to Connect Our Kids. The organization has affected 18,000 children and found over half a million connections for those children, touching the lives of over 10,000 American families. In this episode, we discuss: Where Jennifer came up with the idea to create Connect Our Kids How the technology works to help social workers do their job more efficiently Impactful success stories of children being connected with family members and adults in their circle Jennifer's long-term vision for Connect Our Kids and her short-term goals for 2024 The challenges Jennifer is facing and the support she needs to help Connect Our Kids grow Jennifer explains that social workers who work in child welfare can use the tools provided by Connect Our Kids to build out a “map” for a child. This helps to organize all known information about the child's family and other adults in their circle and search for more details on the Internet through the Connect Our Kids People Search technology. By having a tool that searches for and organizes all of the key details, social workers have more time, bandwidth, and emotional energy to do the human work of social work. Due to Jennifer's smart application of modern technology, Connect Our Kids is impacting the lives of thousands of children and families. Thank you, Jennifer, for creating tools that help foster children be connected to their people. “Who killed the Jacobs family?” is the question that has haunted Sacramento's Upper Land Park neighborhood for thirty-three years. The Jacobs were a typical American family, until one January morning in 1991, when they were brutally slain in the one place they should have been the safest– their home. Dozens of detectives have tried to crack the case, to untangle the rumors and speculation, but justice has yet to be served. Their names were Mick, Marcy, and Jennifer Jacobs, and this is their story. If you or someone you know has information about the Jacobs family homicides, call the Sacramento Police Department at 916-264-5471. Episode Notes Today we're exploring the foster care system. Now, this system does have noble intentions and the goal is to protect children from abuse, provide temporary homes, and keep kids with their families when possible (and that last point has become a point of contention between some advocates, and we'll talk about that here). But the stats are staggering; currently, there are over 400,000 children in foster care in the US, and kids ages 1 to 5 make up about 30% - which the largest share. In this episode we investigate some of the stories of these families and discuss how this system can be improved. Our guests today are: Dr. Jennifer Jacobs who has served in the Army, is a West Point graduate, and is a former White House Fellow. She studied physics and nuclear engineering, and then decided to use knowledge she gained there to launch a family connection software tool to help change the way foster children find a home. Renee Williams who is the Executive Director of the National Center for Victims of Crime. She stepped into the role after serving as the Director of the National Crime Victim Bar Association and she mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters, and advocates for children as a court-appointed special advocate. As a successful TV producer, Jennifer Jacobs never thought she'd run her own business someday. But as coworkers discovered her delicious desserts, her baking hobby started turning into a little business back in 2013. And now that little home business is booming, with customers sometimes lining up down the street to get her baked goods. Jennifer sells custom cakes, cookie sandwiches, and other baked desserts through her brick-and-mortar bakery, the Wandering Whisk Bakeshop, in Pinellas Park, FL. Jennifer didn't start out with a business or culinary school degree, but she did understand how to market her products. As a producer for the Home Shopping Network, she spent countless hours watching the TV hosts sell anything and everything. But she has marketed her baking business completely organically, without ever paying for ads. She has a large Instagram following and has been showcased locally and nationally in newspapers, magazines, TV shows, and more. In this episode, Jennifer shares how to grow your cottage food business from part-time hobby to full-time brick-and-mortar without spending a dime on advertising.Get full show notes and transcript here: https://forrager.com/podcast/34
