This episode was inspired by a suggestion from one of you, our awesome listeners, and is based on a topic from the What Now podcast. We're sharing our most random rules for the world and how we'd enforce them. Diana thinks the minimum education should just be primary school, Sayo wants us all reading in two languages, and Damola wants to ban small talk. This was such a fun one!!!You can find us on Instagram: @LifeUncharted_Please rate the podcast, share with a friend and leave a comment, if you ruled the world, what will you do??
Christine is a passionate communications specialist and environmentalist. She is a lover of human rights and advocates for the rights of women and girls. Christine has been working in the NGO space for over fifteen years and has a dream to write and produce a TV show about non-profit organizations. In this episode, Christine discusses why she began calling herself an environmentalist when working on her Master's Degree and working for a non-governmental organization producing a show on environmental issues… facing the challenge of breaking down jargon so people can better understand environmental issues… for her Master's thesis, focusing on how the media can best communicate about environment issues… having her thesis published and being recruited by the environmental movement, Let's Do It! World, to be a representative in Kenya… in 2016, launching the non-profit Let's Do It! Kenya … hosting the first “cleanup” day in Kenya and having 20,000 people participate… the importance of engaging young people to drive change… traveling to different countries to discuss environmental challenges and solutions… the reminder that “every small step counts”… with her colleagues working in other countries, championing the successful effort to have the United Nations declare September 20 as World Cleanup Day… discovering that many of the grassroots efforts to conserve the environment were being led by women and young girls… working to have these women and girls included in decision-making spaces… the importance of mentorship and coaching. We welcome Samman, the community engagement coordinator at Sahiyo, to discuss the ongoing efforts to address and prevent female genital mutilation/cutting (FGMC) within the South Asian Bora community and beyond. She provides insight into the importance of using appropriate terminology like FGM/C to foster dialogue and reduce stigma. We explore the prevalence of FGM/C in the United States, countering the misconception that it's only practiced elsewhere. The conversation delves into understanding FGM/C as a social norm, exploring interventions and supports such as trauma-informed care and peer support networks. Additionally, we discuss the role of youth advocacy, storytelling, and the importance of comprehensive education in driving change. The episode also highlights SAYO's efforts to amplify the voices of survivors and work with communities and policymakers to effectively address and prevent FGMC. This week on Lagos Meets London, we're joined by the talented Adéṣayọ̀ Tàlàbí, better known as "SimplySayo" as part of our series celebrating successful Nigerian women in the UK entertainment industry. Sayo is a brilliant content creator, resonating with audiences worldwide and amassing nearly 1 million followers across social platforms. Known for her unique approach to spoken word, she masterfully blends humour and Nigerian culture into her poetry, addressing important issues subtly with relatable twists. In this episode, we dive into Sayo's passion for raising awareness about blood donation, particularly within the Black community, a cause close to her heart. Guys, if you're listening or watching, please let's support Sayo in her drive to get 12,000 Black blood donors – a campaign she's championing for the NHS due to the shortage of Black blood donors. We never know when we or a family member might need a blood transfusion. Let's come together as a community and help Sayo achieve this vital goal. She also opens up about her personal life, touching on how the loss of a family member has strengthened her bond with her siblings. We chat about the extravagant nature of Nigerian weddings and her journey from working in the NHS and attending university to finding success in content creation. Throughout, we maintain the fun and light-hearted vibe Lagos Meets London is known for, while also addressing important, real-life topics.

As we continue our season on value chains, in this episode, we explore logistics. The cost of goods and food is disproportionately higher in Africa than anywhere else in the world, with consumers in some markets, spending 50% or more of their total income on food alone. A major reason for these high prices is logistics. So how do we fix this? How do we improve the efficiency of logistics on the African continent, and ultimately drive down the cost of goods? [04:20] - On the role of containerization and efficient ports, with Jetstream Africa's Miishe Addy.[11:37] - After we get through the ports, our goods are loaded onto a truck. We hear from Omar Hagrass on how Trella is trying to improve long-haul efficiency in North Africa and the Middle East.[15:26] - From the port, we move on to the wholesale distributor. As we discuss with Daniel Yu, Sokowatch is aggregating small retailers at the fragmented last-mile and offering same-day delivery of fast-moving consumer goods. [22:37] - As the nature of retail evolves and more small merchants need logistics solutions, logistics-as-a-service providers like Sendbox are playing a role at the last-mile. We hear from its CEO, Emotu Balogun. [26:41] - But amidst all of this tech and innovation - what about infrastructure? To what extent is the problem just poor ports and roads? The Flip's b-mic, Sayo Folawiyo, and its host, Justin Norman, call up infrastructure investor Dami Agbaje for some insight. [32:42] - This episode's retrospective with Sayo and Justin. This season is sponsored by MFS Africa. All this season, we're exploring value chains. And in the payments value chain, no fintech has a wider reach on the continent than MFS Africa.
