Outgoing Sen. Rob Cowles, R-Green Bay, in an interview for WisPolitics's Capitol Chats podcast says while there's “definitely a danger” to breaking party lines, lawmakers can't be afraid to “lose a committee appointment because of your principles.” Cowles, the longest-serving Wisconsin state lawmaker currently in office, has been elected to the state Senate for the past 37 years since winning an April 1987 special election. Before that, he served in the Assembly from 1982-1987. He will retire next month after deciding not to seek reelection when he was drawn into a district with fellow Green Bay GOP Sen. Eric Wimberger. Cowles joined WisPolitics' Capitol Chats podcast to talk about his time in office, how the state of politics has changed over the course of his career, and his history of bucking party norms.

In this week's episode I am thrilled to share a conversation I had with a long time friend (seriously, I've known her since childhood!) and past client Lily Cowles. Lily reached out to me after having a conversation with her medical doctor about freezing her eggs. Lily is 36 and was feeling concerned about her fertility after years of heavy bleeding and intense periods. Lily learned to chart and was able to uncover the diet and lifestyle patterns that were causing the hormonal imbalances she was experiencing. She shares here about the work we did together and how much her experience of life has changed in the process! In this episode, Dana Cowles shares his compelling story of growing up with intense anxiety, navigating childhood fears, and the impactful moment that altered his outlook on life. Recounting a traumatic car accident from his youth, Dana explores the profound shift it sparked, intensifying his journey toward understanding fear, helplessness, and personal resilience. Through his experiences, Dana challenges the notion of fearlessness, offering fresh insights into the roles of anxiety, discomfort, and vulnerability in building inner strength. About the Guest: Dana Cowles is an advocate for mental health awareness and a thought leader on resilience. His life journey has been marked by overcoming anxiety and redefining courage beyond fearlessness. With personal insights shaped by traumatic experiences, Dana now speaks out on the value of embracing discomfort and viewing anxiety as a universal, useful tool for growth. Key Takeaways: Challenging the Pursuit of Fearlessness: Dana discusses how chasing a fear-free life is often counterproductive. Embracing discomfort, rather than avoiding it, is a more authentic path to resilience. Transforming Anxiety into Strength: Dana shares how his childhood car accident left lasting psychological effects, deepening his understanding of helplessness and leading him to embrace anxiety as part of the human experience. Redefining 'Disease' in Mental Health: Dana critiques the medical tendency to label uncomfortable emotions as "diseases," advocating for a perspective that sees anxiety and pain as shared, constructive human experiences. Using Vulnerability as a Tool for Growth: Dana's journey underscores the importance of accepting uncomfortable emotions as valuable signals, rather than problems to eliminate. Send us a textThis week I'm talking with artist and illustrator David Cowles. after 40 years in the industry David has worked with many great clients including The Village Voice, Entertainment weekly, Sesame Street and They Might Be Giants. It was great to talk to him about how he got into illustration, how he created his signature style and how the industry has changed over the years.
With the Presidential Election less than two weeks away, Mark invites Senator Rob Cowles in studio. Sen. Cowles talks about reinventing himself as he's coming to the end of his political career, having announced in April he will not be running for re-election effectively ending the longest-serving incumbent in the Wisconsin Legislature. He thanks his supporters over the years and his staffers that stayed with him. "I've had a good run and it was time for me. And I'm grateful to have, lucky to have good health..." "You have to accept the results. Peaceful transfer of power". With massive concern of the blowback this election could present to others in the Republican party, Sen. Cowles has thought long and hard about speaking up about the current election. Sen. Cowles says "protecting the constitution and our alliances, NATO, fighting Putin and remembering what we went through, what my family went through..." has led him to his decision of who to endorse. Two of the big events at the 2024 Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival are Men Don't Talk, a play written by Clare Prenton which tours Scotland from 18 November, and Silent Men, a documentary by film-maker Duncan Cowles which is screening as part of our Film Awards programme at the CCA in Glasgow before touring to cinemas across Scotland. Both set out to explore why men can be so reluctant to talk about mental health. Here, Duncan and Clare meet for the first time and compare notes on what they discovered.
In this excerpt, Jodi Cowles shares her experience of living in Turkey with her family and the journey of creating her bilingual children's book, "Joy's World: The Cousins Are Coming". After spending many years in Turkey, Cowles returned to Boise, Idaho with her daughter, who had lived her entire life in Turkey until then. Due to the lack of Turkish cultural presence in Boise, Cowles felt compelled to help her daughter retain her Turkish memories and language, something Cowles herself wished she had from her childhood in Germany. This desire led to the creation of "Joy's World", a book that introduces children to Turkish culture and language. Cowles emphasizes the importance of representing the expat child experience, which she personally relates to as a "third culture kid." To authentically depict the Turkish setting, Cowles hired a Turkish illustrator from Istanbul, ensuring that her book reflected the true essence of the country. The illustrator used local details from Cowles' former neighborhood, adding personal touches recognizable to those familiar with Istanbul. The book features about 50 Turkish words, woven into the story naturally, resembling how bilingual children mix languages in conversation. Through this creative approach, Cowles aimed to appeal to both Turkish families living abroad and readers interested in learning about other cultures. The book includes a glossary for readers who want to dive deeper into the Turkish vocabulary, adding multiple layers to the reading experience. Cowles discusses her publishing journey, highlighting the choices she made, such as selecting the right illustrator and striking a balance between the two languages, which allows the book to serve as a cultural bridge for children and families. In this episode, Brian Russell reflects on the dangers of assuming that God is on our side or my side rather than asking the deeper question: Am I on God's side? Listen in as Brian takes us on a deep dive into Joshua 5:13–15 where Joshua learns the key lesson that prepares him to lead Israel against Jericho and beyond: It's about the holiness of the leader and not about the demonization of the "other." You'll learn how a commitment to the love of God and neighbor shifts the way we can think about the divisions of today and how to live missionally in a world and church that focuses on dualistic tribalism and the demonization of opponents. It was August of 1997 when 21 year old Ricky Cowles was found murdered in his apartment by his girlfriend, Amy Preasmyer and her friend Sara. Nothing about this scene. This wasn't a robbery - there were no signs of forced entry and the apartment wasn't ransacked, nothing was missing. He didn't appear to have any enemies. So what reason could someone possible have to murder him in his own home? The answer to that question would shock everyone. Sponsors: Prose! When we envision the type of person who falls for a financial scam, there are usually a few key characteristics that come to mind:They may be elderly, using a landline phone, or in a state of panic as the person on the other end of the line informs them that if they don't hand over $10,000 immediately, they'll be arrested. But those stereotypes are just plain wrong. Charlotte Cowles, the Cut's financial advice columnist and a longtime freelance business columnist for The New York Times, fell for an elaborate new scam that involved Amazon, the FTC, threatening her child, and handing a box with $50,000 in cash through the window of the backseat of a car. In Mailbag, we hear from a listener who's wondering what the difference is between an hourly financial advisor and one that charges a flat fee. We also address how to shop around for title insurance when you're buying a home. In our news of the week, we talk about the big changes coming to the commissions we pay when we buy and sell homes, what the producer price index (or PPI) coming in hotter than expected means, and a new study about how Americans are feeling about their finances. Takeaways Younger adults are more likely to fall for online scams. Scammers use psychological tactics such as authority and isolation to manipulate their victims. Talking about scams and sharing experiences can help prevent others from falling victim. If something seems too good to be true, trust your gut and question it. Be cautious of phone calls or messages from unknown sources and verify information independently. Report scams to the appropriate authorities and seek support from trusted friends or family members. What a fun conversation we have with Jodi Cowles about cross-cultural living and God using creativity to help us process questions and pain. Jodi is an American author who spent eight years living (and mostly loving) life with her husband and daughter in Istanbul, Turkey. Spending more than half her adult life living and working in seven different countries, her time abroad expanded her vision of the world and allowed her to collect stories along the way. Armed with an endless supply of culture-clashing mishaps, inappropriate marriage proposals, and language barrier misfires, Jodi's writing gets to the heart of the matter: the human connection present in every country and culture.

This week, Sara and Danny cover the viral story from The Cut's own financial advice columnist, Charlotte Cowles, who was the unlikely victim of a scam that cost her $50,000. They get into Cowles' article, which details how over the course of just one day, the scammers - posing as Amazon employees and and FTC agents - successfully convinced her that she was the victim of extensive identity theft, with multiple warrants out for her arrest for cybercrimes, money laundering, and drug trafficking. Cowles withdrew and handed the scammers $50,000 from her bank account, before realizing it had all been a lie. Port Huron City Manager James Freed had never been the subject of an ethics complaint. That is until he raised concerns about the social media activities of Martha Perego, the "ethics guru" at the International City/County Management Association. When he got a call from Perego's subordinate, Jessica Cowles, just a few weeks later, his "Spidey-sense" tingled. He asked to call her back so he could record the conversation. He would soon find out that Cowles was attempting to investigate him for violating the ICMA Code of Ethics. In this episode, we listen in on the conversation as the ICMA ethics team attempts to weaponize the organization's Code of Ethics and its enforcement. As you might guess, the folks who work at the Book Review are always reading — and many of them like to juggle three or four books at once. In this episode, Gilbert Cruz talks to the editors Tina Jordan and Greg Cowles about what they've been reading and enjoying, and then, in honor of National Poetry Month, interviews Cowles — who, in addition to about a million other things, edits the Book Review's poetry coverage — about how he came to love it.“I've always loved good sentences and surprising language,” Cowles says. “A novel has room — and is even required — to have some slack language in it. If every sentence was perfectly chiseled and honed and used surprising metaphors, you wouldn't have the patience to stick with it. But poetry, because it's so distilled, requires that; any slack language stands out and would ruin a poem.”
