Consent education in school is mostly insufficient or non-existent — even when it's required by state law. An organization called SafeBAE is trying to change that by training teens to teach each other about consent. SafeBAE's executive director Shael Norris talks about what works and what doesn't when discussing this topic with young people. We'll also hear a cautionary tale about a time when Shael's own daughter attempted to get justice for sexual assault survivors back when she was in high school. The statistics show the rate of assaults as significantly higher than any other age demographic, yet our culture offers little in the way of education or opportunities to change this epidemic. SafeBAE was founded by us in 2015. Daisy, Ella, and Jada are teen sexual-assault survivors and together with Charlie (Daisy's brother) and Shael (our executive director) we created SafeBAE in an effort to prevent what happened to us from happening to anyone else (the BAE in SafeBAE stands for “before anyone else.”) (About Us from safebae.org)Aela Mansmann, SafeBAE Youth Outreach Director is a high school student but has been a lifelong activist.  As president of her Civil Rights Club, she led her school in a gun safety walkout in early 2018.  She also helped to create a “Words for Good” week project to build empathy in the school community.  She is an active member of the Civil Rights team, Debate Club, Field Hockey Team, Drama Club, Mock Trial, and the Gay/Straight Alliance as well as joining SafeBAE as a national BAE Breaker.Facebook @safebae.orgInstagram @safe_baeTwitter @safe_baeEmail: shael@safebae.orgWebsite: safebae.orgMentioned PartnersFrancesca Robert, PoetFriendship of WomenSpace to SpeakCatcalls of NYCPodcast Music:I'm Just Good by Johny Grimes https://soundcloud.com/johny-grimesCreative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0Free Download / Stream: http://bit.ly/im-just-goodMusic promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/2wrYUBtrjGM br> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZ1maOwEZy0

On the last day of Woman’s history month, we are so happy to be ending it with an interview that shows just how strong women are. This week we had the opportunity to speak with Shael Norris- Founding Executive Director of SafeBAE.org. This organization was first founded by 4 extraordinary women who are also Teen Sexual assault survivors! Even with the early and tragic loss of a co-founder, Daisy Coleman, the remaining founders continued to spread the education and importance of consent education. Not only keeping Coleman’s memory alive, but making sure what they experience doesn’t happen again. Shael Norris joined the organization to make a difference and credits these young women to helping her become an activist in her own right. Nicky goes on to explain how she came across the SafeBAE. While scrolling on Facebook, Nicky saw an article post by insider Business about “Consent Panties”! Shael told us another co-founder of SafeBae Ella O’Neal, created and designed these underwear with fun cutesy cartoons that bare a serious topic: Consent. These underwear where created to raise money for organization and become something more than that. Norris goes on to describe that consent doesn’t have to be this mood buster. Consent can be sexy, and the cartoons bring a little humor to it. As the conversation continued Shael expressed to us the consent conversation doesn’t have to be weird between adults and their kids. “One of the things I say [to my kids] is, we have to live in there world we’re currently in, while building the world we want”. A few extra notes for this episode. We have big changes in store for this podcast. First, we have increased the sampling rate for this episode and for all future episodes.  When we started this podcast 10 years ago we purposely made the decision to encode each episode a lot lower than we needed to because the ultimate goal was to help people understand what audio drama was. We weren’t exactly the only game in town, but we were one of only a few audio drama companies that we knew about and what we wanted to do was draw attention to the art form and also let people know about our titles for sale. What better way than to have free samples? We also had years of live performances sitting around that didn’t meet our standards for sale, but were still something we were extremely proud of and didn’t want to keep to ourselves. Today the landscape has changed. There are dozens if not hundreds of audio drama podcasts out there. Anthologies and series, ongoing and one-offs, and at least one notable podcast about how to do audio drama podcasts. After ten years, it’s time for us to get with the times. So, with all of that said, this episode, number 167 will be the last installment of what we have been so creatively calling “ARTC’s Podcast”. Next month we’re relaunching as the Centauri Express. What’s going to be different? Lots. For one thing, we’re joining the club and will begin airing studio-produced episodes of some of the various serials we’ve written over the years, starting with our 13-part expanded story of “Dash Cardigan”. We’re also working on a new show intro and will be including additional segments from time to time that will feature panel discussions, interviews, and really whatever else you’d like to hear, so be sure to let us know at podcast@artc.org. Plus there’s that improved audio quality we were just discussing. What’s going to be the same? How you get us. We’re sticking with the same publication platform and RSS feed, so you shouldn’t notice much difference except in the format of the content. Also the same, unfortunately, will be the publication schedule. I had hoped to be able to bring this to you every two weeks, but we’re still getting our studio legs under us, as it were. We’ve been performing live for so long that we’ve gotten pretty good at it, if we do say so ourselves, but adding studio work in there to go with those live shows is a bit of a learning curve. Plus, we want to be able to have a consistent schedule without any gaps in publication. We’re still shooting for that every two week mark, but we want to get there in a way that is sustainable. For those of you who were enjoying the live performances, fear not. We’ll still be bringing those to you by way of Patreon, which you’ve heard me talk about for the last few episodes. All patrons at any level will be able to hear these updates, which will become free bonus content for those folks like Caran, Matthew, Kerry, Christa, John, Donald, Jason, Chelsea, Brad, Sterling, Ben, Richard, Shael, Juliana, and Sketch. The regular episodes of the Centauri Express will continue to be free, but we’d truly appreciate your support. And the last thing I’d like to ask of you before we get into this month’s episode is for you to let us know what you’ve been doing while listening to ARTC’s Podcast. Do you listen while you drive? Just sit quietly? Catch Pokemon? Do you listen by yourself or make it a group activity? Let us know at podcast@artc.org or head over to the main website at artc.org and use the Speak Pipe to leave us a voicemail that we can feature in later shows. And now for this month’s episode, which is kind of a transition episode, as this piece was produced here at ARTC Studio and is the first in a new imprint for us. Our other imprints include things like Science Fiction by Gaslight, which features adaptations of classic horror and science fiction, Into the Labyrinth, featuring original dark fantasy, and Adventures in Sound, which features original work that doesn’t really fit into any specific category. And to that lineup we are adding The Sound of Liberty, a collection of classic science fiction adaptations and some original work that highlights the principles in the American Bill of Rights. The first installment in The Sound of Liberty is this month’s audio drama offering, The Proper Thing to Do by Brad Linaweaver and William Alan Ritch, adapted for audio and directed by William Alan Ritch, produced by David Benedict.

Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 129. This is a lesson/lecture I presented to a group of "Upper Elementary" Montessori students today at my son's school, The Post Oak School (Upper El includes 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students, and there were also a few third graders visiting from lower el, who are moving up next year). The students (25 or 30 or so) sat in a group at my feet, and were polite and interested the whole time. They asked many very intelligent and fun questions. I tried not to get too complicated, but did speak in fairly frank and sophisticated terms, tried not to talk down to them or dumb the talk down too much, and almost all of them hung in there till the end. The original plan was to speak for 40 or so minutes then take questions for another 15 or so, but we ended up going about an hour and 7 minutes, and then during lunch I had throng of students throwing more questions at me for another half hour. What amazing students; what an amazing school and educational approach. (This is one reason I love the Montessori approach; see my Montessori, Peace, and Libertarianism.) I included here only the main talk and Q&A, not the lunch banter. (An article prepared by 6th graders in the class, describing the lecture, appears in the first couple of pages of this issue of the class newsletter.) I think this talk is suitable for kids from ages 9 to 16 or so. The notes I used and handed out are reproduced below, with a few links added. For more background on these topics, see the links below, as well as my short article Legislation and Law in a Free Society, adapted from my 1995 JLS article Legislation and the Discovery of Law in a Free Society, which contains detailed references; and my more detailed speech The (State's) Corruption of (Private) Law, from the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Property and Freedom Society. Update: Some people have asked me for further recommended readings, in legal history, etc. Unfortunately my library is packed away in boxes now for a renovation so I cannot peruse my legal theory/history titles, but from memory and some other notes I have, here are some suggested readings related to the talk. Some of my own personal favorites first: Bruno Leoni, Freedom and the Law Watson, Alan, The Importance of “Nutshells” Herman, Shael, The Louisiana Civil Code: A European Legacy for the United States Giovanni Sartori, Liberty and Law Alan Watson, Roman Law and Comparative Law The Story of Law, by John M. Zane (I haven't finished it yet but liked what read so far) (also online) Arthur Hogue, The Origins of the Common Law See also my post Book Recommendations: Private, International, and Common Law; Legal Theory, and also: The Greatest Libertarian Books and  Other Top Ten Lists of Libertarian Books. For some others: A History of American Law, 2d. ed., 1985, Lawrence M. Friedman Trakman, Leon E., The Law Merchant: The Evolution of Commercial Law Oliver Wendell Holmes, The Common Law Buckland, W.W. & Arnold D. McNair, Roman Law and Common Law: A Comparison in Outline The Bramble Bush: On Our Law and Its Study, by Karl N. Llewellyn Jhering, Dr. Rudolph von, The Struggle for Law Harold J. Berman, Law and Revolution: The Formation of the Western Legal Tradition. “The latter is one of the greatest books (not just of law, but of any subject) I've ever read; and the former is full of interesting argument and facts. Berman also has a sequel, published a few years ago, that carries the story through the Protestant Reformation, but I haven't read it yet. I venture to recommend it, sight unseen, on the strength of my admiration of its predecessor.” (Thanks to Robert Higgs.) Alan Watson, The Making of the Civil Law Rosalyn Higgins: Problems and Process: International Law and How We Use It Giovanni Sartori, Democratic Theory Merryman, John Henry, The Civil Law Tradition: An Introduction to the Legal Systems of Western Europe and Latin America, 2d. ed.
