In Dinner for Shoes episode 41, Bubble Tea + Summer Jewelry, Sarah invites special guest Taryn O'Flynn of jewelry brand Briwok onto the podcast. Taryn discusses how her move to Australia changed the ethos of her brand, which she named after her late friend Bri. Taryn's handmade jewelry is meant to reflect an “eternal summer holiday” vibe, utilizing unique materials that make each piece feel like a treasure. Sarah discusses some of her other favorite jewelry brands that evoke that same summertime sentiment; she tries out two unique bubble teas that she designed and personalized the way one might string beads on a piece of jewelry; and she finally admits the truth to those who were probably curious: she was definitely a mermaid in another life. Early last year I spoke with Boba Guys co-founders Andrew Chau and Bin Chen. At the time Andrew had just gotten back from visiting Taiwan and other parts of Asia, so it was interesting to hear his observations. Andrew and Bin shared so many great nuggets. We talked about how they got started with a pop-up shop while working fulltime and how they continued to so even after they opened their first few stores. Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/the-boba-guys-andrew-chau-and-bin-chen-bubble-tea-entrepreneurs-bridging-cultures-for-11-years/ Other topics covered include how Boba Guys weathered the pandemic, Andrew and Bin's book called The Boba Book, and how they see boba as a way to bridge cultures. What has Boba Guys been up to since we spoke? Lots of interesting collabs with other brands, and the release of a loyalty program called “Passport” which gamifies the experience through loot boxes instead of linearly earning points to redeem for a drink. Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: · How Andrew and Bin first met when they both worked at Timbuktu · How they decided to start a bubble tea business · Andrew's recent trip to Taiwan and the other Taiwanese Americans he met up with while there · Andrew's thoughts on Taiwan's bubble tea scene · How they started with a pop-up shop · How they have not taken any VC (venture capital) money · The social costs and risks of being an entrepreneur · How other Taiwanese American entrepreneurs like Steve Chen and Kevin Lin mentored them · How Andrew does advising for the small business council and testified in Washington D.C. on behalf of small businesses · How they were working on Boba Guys Japan when the pandemic hit · How Boba Guys dealt with the pandemic · The biggest challenges they've experienced · The third wave of boba · The meaning of the word boba and how Andrew's mom reacted to the name Boba Guys · How Boba Guys name their drinks · Their book, The Boba Book and how they choose their co-author Richard Parks · What happened when they went to Taiwan and tried to determine which tea shop invented bubble tea · The Boba Guys' merchandise and aardvark mascot · The Boba Home Kit and how they created a boba kit that was on Williams Sonoma · How they teach people how to make boba online · How they have mentored other entrepreneurs Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/the-boba-guys-andrew-chau-and-bin-chen-bubble-tea-entrepreneurs-bridging-cultures-for-11-years/

I'm sharing my first bubble tea experience—it was a blast! I visited a new bubble tea spot in town and tried a coffee frappuccino with chocolate popping boba. The cashier shared some cool local food insights while my drink was prepared. When it arrived, I shook it up and took my first sip. The coffee and chocolate popping boba combo was delicious! I even learned not to swallow the boba too quickly. Can't wait to go back for more flavors.

While it took a while for Kern's Food Hall to finally open, it didn't take long for people to begin exploring the property in packs – enjoying sushi and pizza from vendors, sipping on rooftop drinks, and shopping for flowers, clothes and artsy paper goods. Take it from this week's co-hosts, Ryan Wilusz and Brianna Paciorka, who visited on a Thursday afternoon and were welcomed by the bustling sounds of a diverse customer base, including UT students. It makes sense with all the apartments aimed at college students nearby. Kern's Food Hall is no Marble City Market, Knoxville's first food hall, and that's OK. We break down some of the differences, what makes Kern's unique, how it could affect South Knoxville growth and everything else you should expect before visiting. That includes a breakdown of what's open in this first phase. >> Link: Kern's Food Hall is ready to spill some secrets - restaurants, rooftops, brewery and all >> Link: Kern's Food Hall is open! Leute, da saß er also. Da saß er also. Bernd Stangenbar Dragoslav Stripanovic Booty Vogts Slip Herberger Franz Beckenbouncer Gern geschehen Und jetzt viel Spaß!
Join the gang for a very romantic episode of Grindcast as we give an update on Will's car and discuss several other topics before we have share a romantic meal of Japanese Lays chips and sample a Bubble Tea kit.

Max Pearson presents a collection of this week's Witness History episodes from the BBC World Service. This week, we're looking at the birth of a new African nation – Zambia - in 1964, and find out how the country got its name. We also learn more about life after independence with our guest Dr Alfred Tembo, head of history of the University of Zambia. Elsewhere, two survivors of a series of terrifying gun attacks in Mumbai talk about their experiences. And there's a look back to 2003, when the worst heatwave in centuries caused thousands of deaths across Europe, and led to a health crisis in Paris. Plus, we hear extracts from the lost memoirs of Manchester United goalkeeper Les Sealey. He recorded them before his death and the tapes were discovered years later. And finally, the invention of bubble tea, a creation that would change the tea drinking world. The first cup was sold in a tea shop in Taiwan in 1987. Contributors: Mulenga Kapwepwe – daughter of Simon Kapwepwe, fighter for Zambia's independence Dr Alfred Tembo – head of history, University of Zambia Devika Rotawan – survivor of gun attack in Mumbai Arun Jadhav – policeman and survivor of gun attack in Mumbai Dr Patrick Pelloux - emergency doctor at St Antoine Hospital in Paris Les Sealey – former Manchester United goalkeeper Liu Han-Chieh – tea leaf seller and shop owner Lin Xiuhu – developer of bubble tea (Photo: Celebrations after Zambian election, 1991. In 1987, a tea shop in Taiwan named Chun Shui Tang began selling pearl milk tea, or bubble tea, as it's often called. It would revolutionise the tea-drinking world.
