For years, in the heart of Swansea, a man blocked traffic, stood silently in the street, and defied every attempt to understand him. David Hampson, known only as “The Silent Man,” never explained himself—not to police, not to judges, not even to psychiatrists. His bizarre and repeated offenses sent shockwaves through the UK legal system and left professionals grasping for answers. What was his motive—protest, delusion, or something even stranger? And can silence be a crime in itself? We're telling that story tonight
Donald Trump is wreaking havoc on America's legal system. He's disobeying court rulings, calling judges "crooked", and pressuring law firms to donate to hand-picked causes. We've never seen this behaviour from a US president. So, how far is he willing to go?
The legal system is coming under attack from the Trump administration. The White House is defying judges' orders and threatening law firms – in Chicago and across the nation. Northwestern University Law School's legal clinic also faces federal scrutiny. Is all of this legal? Carolyn Shapiro, co-director of Chicago-Kent College of Law's Institute on the Supreme Court of the United States Carolyn Shapiro weighs in. How do the president's attacks on judges, educational institutions, law firms and accepted norms challenge the legal system, and how might the outcomes affect ordinary Americans?
ChatGPT has been invading all walks of life in recent months, and that even includes the justice system. In late March 2023, a Pakistani judge consulted the chatbot before granting bail to a 13 year old boy who stood accused of kidnapping and attempting to rape a 9 year old. According to Pakistan Observer, the judge asked ChatGPT the following initial question: ““Can a juvenile suspect in Pakistan, who is 13 years old, be granted bail after arrest?” The chatbot responded: “Under the Juvenile Justice System Act 2018, according to section 12, the court can grant bail on certain conditions.” A discussion then ensued on how this option could be interpreted when taking into account certain other laws. The judge included ChatGPT's responses in his judgement and stated how impressed he was. The cases have led to hope that AI could help make legal systems around the world more efficient, but there's been a lot of criticism and skepticism too. Are there any other examples aside from ChatGPT ? What are the possible risks then? To listen to the last episodes, you can click here : How is inflation affecting our eating habits? Nora Freeman Engstrom is a professor of law who says that in three-quarters of cases one or more of the parties lacks legal representation. Worse yet, often the litigants are involved in high-consequence civil cases where there is no right to a lawyer and costs are prohibitive. In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., we delve into the infamous Salem witch trials that gripped Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692. The episode explores the sociopolitical and religious context that laid the groundwork for mass hysteria and wrongful accusations of witchcraft. We begin with strange fits and visions experienced by young girls, leading to over 200 accusations and 20 executions. Key figures like Bridget Bishop, Rebecca Nurse, George Burroughs, and Tituba are discussed to illustrate how social biases, religious fervor, and legal practices contributed to the tragic events. The episode scrutinizes the role of 'spectral evidence'—testimonies based on dreams and visions—in the trials, making it almost impossible for the accused to defend themselves. We also hear about the devastating human cost, including the cases of Giles Corey, who was crushed to death, and Sarah Good, who gave birth in prison. Notably, we touch on the voices of dissent, such as Reverend John Hale and Thomas Brattle, who challenged the legitimacy of the trials. The episode concludes by questioning the broader implications, legal frameworks of the time, and long-lasting lessons. Tune in next time as we explore the enduring impact on the lives forever altered by this dark chapter in history.00:00 Introduction to the Salem Witch Trials00:22 The Spark: Bewitched Girls and Initial Accusations01:22 Profiles of the Accused: Bridget Bishop and Rebecca Nurse02:07 The Role of Spectral Evidence03:38 Religious Tensions and the Case of George Burroughs04:30 Tituba's Confession and the Cycle of Accusations05:31 Patterns Among the Accused and the Accusers08:59 The Legal System and Its Flaws11:06 Alternative Explanations: The Ergot Theory13:13 The Human Cost: Stories of Suffering and Defiance15:16 Voices of Reason: Questioning the Trials17:33 The Legacy and Lessons of the Salem Witch Trials23:40 Conclusion and Upcoming Episodes Hosted on Acast.
