We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2021 conversation with Steve Perry. ABOUT STEVE PERRYOne of the most iconic voices in rock music history, Steve Perry is best known as the lead singer of the band Journey during the group's most successful period. His first Top 20 pop hit as either a performer or songwriter was the solo-written “Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin',” which became a hit for the band in 1979. In the following decade he co-wrote an unbelievable streak of classic songs with Neil Shon and Jonathan Cain, including “Any Way You Want It,” “Who's Crying Now,” “Open Arms,” “Separate Ways,” ”Send Her My Love,” and “Don't Stop Believin',” a single that's been certified five times platinum. His 1984 debut solo album Street Talk produced the classic singles “Oh Sherrie” and “Foolish Heart.” After penning additional Journey hits “Be Good to Yourself,” “Girl Can't Help It,” and “I'll be Alright Without You” he departed the band and released his second solo album, For the Love of Strange Medicine, featuring the single “You Better Wait.” After briefly reuniting with Journey and co-writing the additional hits “When You Love a Woman” and “Message of Love” in the mid-1990s, he stepped away from recording. Steve returned in 2018 with his third solo album, Traces. In 2021 he released his fourth solo record, a holiday collection called The Season, produced by Steve and Thom Flowers, and featuring contributions from multi-instrumentalist Dallas Kruse. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, whom Rolling Stone magazine named among the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time” joins us to talk about exploring the great American Christmas songbook from a writer's perspective, to share some stories about his own songs, and to offer some insight into his approach to the craft.

There are guests whose stories are filled with incredible achievements. And then there are guests whose stories crack you open—with their heart, their humility, and their humanity.Today's guest, Rebecca Rusch, is all of the above.Rebecca is one of the world's most extraordinary endurance athletes—a 7-time World Champion, mountain bike hall-of-famer, best-selling author, Emmy Award winner, and activist. She has not only pushed herself to the physical edge through rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and multi-day adventure races like Eco-Challenge—she has also traveled to the emotional core of what it means to live fully, love deeply, and be good. You may know her from the acclaimed documentary Blood Road, which follows Rebecca's 1,800-kilometer mountain bike journey along the Ho Chi Minh Trail to locate the site where her father's plane went down during the Vietnam War. That quest wasn't just about closure—it was about connection, healing, and honoring the man who shaped her spirit. In this deeply moving episode of the Cracking Open podcast, we explore:✨ How the loss of her father at a young age ignited a lifelong search for meaning✨ What growing up with a single, hard-working mom taught her about strength and self-reliance✨ The power of curiosity, nature, and endurance to reveal who we really are✨ How a traumatic brain injury forced her to slow down—and reimagine what success looks like✨ Why “being good” matters so much more than being perfectWhat we didn't know when we scheduled this conversation was that Rebecca's beloved mom would pass away just one week before we recorded. And so what unfolds in this episode is not just an interview—it's a powerful reflection on how we live, how we love, and how we show up for the people who matter most.Rebecca's story is one of grit, grace, and growth. And at the heart of it all is a simple message from her father, who signed every letter home from Vietnam with the same two words: Be Good. It's a mantra that continues to guide her—and now, maybe, it will guide you too.

518. Don't Be Good-for-Nothing Mark 11:12-25 Emmanuel Oset 27042025 by City Church Lagos
It all started when my Dad helped some people lift a piano. There were not enough men to lift it, but they all thought they could handle it. And the next thing I knew, my Dad ended up in the hospital for a hernia operation, all because of lifting that big piano. He never should have tried to lift that much. You know what? I'm talking to somebody now who is sweating, and straining to lift...oh, not a piano! But it might be something you were never meant to lift. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Trying So Hard to Be Good." Well, our word for today from the Word of God is John 15:4-5. I guess you could say it's about avoiding spiritual hernias! Jesus is probably walking through the Garden of Gethsemane with His disciples. He's now in the countdown hours before He goes to the cross, and He stops and says, "Gentlemen, take a look at that grape vine over there." And in the process, He teaches them a lesson that they probably remembered every time they looked at a grape vine. He said, "I am the vine, you are the branches." And then in verses 4 and 5 He said, "Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit. Apart from Me you can do nothing." Now, what Jesus is saying here in simple language is this: You concentrate on staying close to Me, and I'll produce the results. Not you'll produce the results; I'll produce them. Don't get it backwards. You're not the vine producing the fruit. Jesus said, "I'm the vine. All you are is the branch." When He says you'll bear fruit, I think that every follower of Christ who has any life at all in Him is going to be a fruit-bearing Christian. What does that mean? Well, it means, for example, the love that you need for that person in your family or at work that's really difficult for you to deal with...maybe somebody at school. The fruit that you need to produce is love for that person who has given you no reason to love them. How about the patience you need? Or fruit can mean people coming to Christ. So, how do you have the love you need, the patience you need, the self-control you need? How do you lead people to Christ? It is not about you producing the results. Don't forget the vine and the branches picture. You look at that branch on that vine, it looks like the grapes are coming from the branch. But that's wrong! They're coming through the branch. They're coming from the vine. All of the good traits of a Jesus follower, all the love, all the witness, all the persuasion, all the power, all the patience that you need isn't yours. The good result oh, comes through you but not from you. Imagine a little branch lying off on the side going, "Oh, oh, wait! I've got to get some fruit on me!" You say, "Get back on the vine! That's where the fruit comes from." Maybe you've seen the Christian experience as something where you have to sweat, and strain, and push and say, "Oh, I've just got to try harder. I've tried so hard to be a good Christian." That's why you get a spiritual hernia. All you've got is a self-improvement plan with Christian words. See, your mission is to stay close to your Jesus, and then as you do your part, He will naturally produce what you've been trying to force. Hudson Taylor, the great missionary leader, said, "I used to ask God to help me. Then I asked if I might help Him, and I ended up asking Him to do His work through me." Listen, "Open your hands, open your arms and relax." Or in the words of Corrie ten Boom, "Don't wrestle, just nestle."

The Art of Experimentation – Stop Playing It Safe!Listen, if you've been doing the same thing over and over and expecting some grand artistic breakthrough, I've got news for you: IT'S NOT COMING. You're just drawing the same stale, predictable stuff, like a baker who only knows how to make plain white bread. You need to throw some jalapeños in there, swirl in some chocolate—GET WEIRD.This week on the podcast, we're diving into The Art of Experimentation—breaking out of your artistic rut, trying new mediums, and embracing the glorious mess of creativity. Because if you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough.Because safe is boring. Safe is a creative dead end. The best artists? They took RISKS. Picasso didn't stay in his Blue Period forever, and neither should you.Trying new styles or mediums unlocks parts of your brain that have been asleep at the wheel. You're going to discover new ways to express yourself, new ideas, and maybe even a little bit of that long-lost joy in creating. Remember joy? Here are some simple ways to punch fear in the face and start experimenting:Draw with your non-dominant hand – It'll be terrible, but it'll teach you to let go of perfection.Limit yourself to three colors – Forces you to think differently about shading and composition.Make an ugly drawing ON PURPOSE – See what happens when you're not worried about making it “good.”Use a tool you've never touched before – Charcoal, digital, ink wash, finger painting, crayons, whatever. Just break out of your default. Now, if you're bringing this to someone who's set in their ways (cough your mom cough), you've got to make it fun and low-pressure. Here's how:Make it a game – Timed drawings, absurd prompts, blind contour drawing. People forget they're “bad” at something when they're laughing.Use nostalgia – “Remember doodling in the margins of your high school notebooks? Let's do that again.”Destroy the idea of perfection – Tell them to make something ugly on purpose. Takes the fear right out of it.Sneak attack – Leave some markers and a sketchbook on the table. Watch curiosity do its thing. At the end of the day, creativity is about exploration. So stop playing it safe, grab a weird-ass medium, and make something ridiculous. You might just surprise yourself.LINKS:Michael Zulli and his amazing run on TMNT back in the Miarage days, great article https://youtu.be/dLSzmcA2sNAhttps://youtu.be/aIq9h0JnzcMWebsite for poses, with timers and everything, a great warm up tool! The Most Rebellious Thing You Can Do? Be Good.We live in a time where being an outright jerk seems like a fast track to success—where the loudest, meanest voices get the most attention, and stepping on others is just another strategy to get ahead. But here's the thing: you don't have to play that game. This week on the FWACATA Podcast, we're talking about the quiet, overlooked power of choosing not to be an asshole.Think about it—how many times have you had the chance to take advantage of someone? To push a little harder to get ahead? To bend the truth just enough to make things easier for yourself? And yet, you didn't. Not because you're weak. Not because you weren't smart enough. But deep down, you knew it wasn't the right thing to do.In a world where everyone is looking for an edge, having a conscience is its kind of rebellion. The easiest thing to do is get bitter and angry. Start cutting corners and convincing yourself that everyone else is doing it, so why not you?But the more complex, more rewarding path? Choosing integrity, even when it doesn't immediately benefit you.As an artist, that means respecting your craft and your audience. As a creator, that means making work that means something—not just chasing trends. As a person, that means refusing to be part of the cycle that's turning the world into one big, self-serving machine. If you've ever felt like the world is run by people who don't care about anything but themselves, you're not wrong. But here's the trick: their power only works if we let them set the rules.Every time you choose to be good—to create, to lift others up, to refuse to play dirty—you break their system just a little bit more. And maybe, just maybe, that's how we burn the whole thing down.So ask yourself—what kind of person do you want to be?Because at the end of the day, the biggest act of rebellion isn't anger. It's refusing to become what you hate.

Building Momentum: The Power of Small Steps Welcome to another blog post inspired by the FWACATA Podcast, where we dive into life, art, and the journey of becoming invulnerable in the face of challenges. Today, let's talk about the magic of starting small and how consistency can turn those small steps into monumental wins. In the early 2000s, I was lucky to land a spot on GraphicSmash.com. It was my first real foray into publishing comics in a way that garnered some attention. I was part of the early wave of webcomics, and man, it was a grind. For four years, I published two pages of comics every weekend while juggling school, work, and life. It was exhausting, borderline insane—but I walked away with over 200 pages of comics. That experience taught me one of the most valuable lessons: big projects are built one small step at a time. That's the theme for today's Monday Motivation: stop waiting for the perfect conditions and start small. Whether you're an artist, a writer, or just someone with a dream, the secret is consistency. Dream big, but build small. We often hear excuses like, “I need the perfect tools,” or “I'll start when the timing is right.” But here's the truth: those perfect conditions may never come. Sometimes, the key is just to start. Take one small step, then another. In comics, for example, drawing one panel a day can lead to finishing three or more comics in a year. That's a whole series! The same goes for writing. Set a manageable goal, like 3,000 words a week. That might sound small, but over time, you'll have a full novel in your hands. Small wins create momentum, and momentum builds success. This past week, I finished the second issue of Rez, a project that's been on my desk since 2013. Finishing it felt like a huge victory. I celebrated with my wife over a birthday dinner, and that moment reminded me of why I keep grinding: the payoff is worth it. So, here's the takeaway: Break down your goals into manageable chunks. Build a routine that works for you. Celebrate your small wins. Whether you're publishing a comic, writing a novel, or tackling your next big idea, remember that the journey is built one step at a time. Small habits lead to big changes. Now, go out there and start your project. Even if it's messy or imperfect, just start. You'll thank yourself later. Until next time, keep pushing, keep creating, and stay invulnerable. BE GOOD.

Chapter 1 What's On Our Best Behavior by Elise Loehnen"On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good" by Elise Loehnen explores the complex relationship women have with societal expectations and the inherent pressures to conform to traditional ideals of goodness. Loehnen examines the seven deadly sins—pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust—arguing that while these traits are often viewed negatively, they can also serve as powerful expressions of strength and autonomy for women. Through a blend of personal anecdotes, cultural analysis, and historical research, she highlights how these societal norms shape women's identities and behaviors. Loehnen encourages readers to embrace their true selves, challenge conventional notions of virtue, and navigate the balance between being 'good' in a society that often restricts freedom and authenticity. Her provocative insights aim to empower women to reclaim their right to express desire, ambition, and individuality without fear of judgment.Chapter 2 On Our Best Behavior by Elise Loehnen Summary"On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good" by Elise Loehnen explores the societal expectations placed on women and how these pressures can lead to detrimental effects on their lives, decisions, and well-being. The book delves into the concept of the Seven Deadly Sins—wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony—framing them not just as moral failings but as a reflection of the ways women's behavior is policed by culture. Key Themes and Insights: Cultural Expectations: Loehnen examines how women are conditioned to behave in ways that align with traditional notions of "goodness," often sacrificing their own needs and desires to meet these unrealistic standards. Freedom in Authenticity: The author argues that embracing so-called deadly sins can lead to personal freedom and authenticity. She encourages readers to redefine what it means to be "good" and to reject the guilt associated with desires and behaviors that go against societal norms. Intersectionality: The book highlights how race, class, and sexual orientation intersect with gender, complicating the experience of being a woman in today's world. Empowerment through Vulnerability: Loehnen shares personal anecdotes and stories from other women to illustrate the importance of vulnerability and the strength that comes from embracing imperfections and complexities in female identities. Actionable Steps: Throughout the narrative, she provides actionable steps for women to reclaim their power, encouraging them to be less concerned with being "nice" and more focused on being honest and true to themselves, thereby dismantling harmful societal expectations. Overall, "On Our Best Behavior" poses challenging questions about morality and societal norms, urging women to consider the real costs of striving for perfection and to embrace a more authentic version of themselves.Chapter 3 On Our Best Behavior AuthorElise Loehnen is an American author known for her thought-provoking writing on social commentary and personal growth. She released her book "On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good" on March 8, 2022. In this work, Loehnen explores the concept of the seven deadly sins from a feminist perspective, discussing how societal expectations and pressures impact women's behavior and self-perception.In addition to "On Our Best Behavior," Elise Loehnen has also contributed to various publications in prominent magazines and is known for her role as a former Chief Content Officer of Goop, where she was involved in developing content around wellness and lifestyle. While "On Our Best Behavior" is her most recognized book to date, she has also co-authored or worked on other projects, though there may not be a significant...

Salesy: Boosting Sales & Scaling Your Online Business with Meghan Lamle
Welcome to Salesy with Meghan. Today, Meghan sat down to talk about You Aren't Going to Wake Up and Be Good at Sales.Meghan's has ten years of experience in sales, and she is here to tell you what it means to REALLY be good at sales. Sales is one of those industries where most are not good when they started. Meghan shares insight on her experience in sales and how she wasn't the best when she first started either. There were plenty of days that Meghan had gone without selling something at her retail job. Meghan shares that the secret sauce to growing in sales is to show up.You are going to avoid sales and say that is it not for you. This mentality stops you from showing up for yourself. Most of you are just waiting to be good at sales without showing up or putting in the work. The problem with some sales courses is that they are taught from the perspective of what worked for the teacher rather than sales strategies customized to work for you. Once you feel comfortable with the strategies that allow your sales to feel more "you", it gets easier through time.To make sales less intimidating, you have to remember that sales is a mixture of three core elements: communication, listening and Sales Psychology.Communicate clearly, listen actively, and understand how to use Sales Psychology to your advantage. In Sales, it is important to know how to use the information that you have. You only get good at sales when you hone-in on your skill, understand and practice it over and over. This week's episode may have one of the all-time great backstories in musical theatre history: a woman composes a new Broadway score with her husband during the Great Depression while he works with the US president, and she falls in love with one of the biggest composers of all time. FINE AND DANDY is much more than its title implies, but it sure does have one humdinger of a "fine and dandy" score. Join producer and musical theatre historian Jennifer Ashley Tepper (54 Below, BE MORE CHILL) this week as we learn more about this piece of our collective musical past, and not the coconut tree from which we did not fall. We definitely recommend listening to last month's episode on LADY, BE GOOD! with William A. Everett before listening to this one. The crossover was unintentionally inspiring! LIBERTY Sessions with Nada Jones | Celebrating women who do & inspiring women who can |
Elise Loehnen is a writer, editor, and podcast host of Pulling the Thread. Ultimately, Elise is a seeker and synthesizer, braiding together wisdom traditions, cultural history, and a deep knowledge of healing modalities to unlock new ways to contextualize who we are and why we're here. She's also the author of the instant New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good. The book explores the ways patriarchy embeds itself in our consciousness. The Seven Deadly Sins—Sloth, Envy, Pride, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Anger—reads like a checklist of what it means to be a "good" woman and offers a path forward, moving ourselves and each other toward freedom and balance. Elise is a frequent contributor to Oprah and has written for The New York Times, Elle Decor, Stylist, and more. She has co-written 12 books, including five New York Times Best Sellers. Previously, she was the chief content officer of goop, and co-hosted The goop Podcast and The goop Lab on Netflix. Before goop, Elise was the editorial projects director of Condé Nast Traveler. Before Traveler, she was the editor at large and ultimately deputy editor of Lucky Magazine, appearing regularly on Today, E!, Good Morning America, and The Early Show. She has a B.A. from Yale. In this episode, Nada sits down with Elise to learn what prompted her to write On Our Best Behavior and to unpack how women have contorted themselves to find a place in history. Elise shares anecdotes about how modesty was prioritized and impacted her life. She discusses the importance of women showing up together and gives us context for why collectivism is essential. This cultural therapist (recently coined at a conference and an appropriate title for Elise) is at once a researcher, teacher, student, and friend. Her ability to clearly articulate our cultural condition gives wings to our unnamed inklings and fragmented thoughts. Elise is currently reading The Origin of Satan by Elaine Pagels, Morality by Jonathon Sack, and Integral Psychology by Ken Wilber. You can find additional recommendations at Bookshop, or Goodreads. In this eye-opening episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton draw inspiration from a post by Mike The Cop (Amazon Affiliate) to tackle common misconceptions that keep officers tied to their roles longer than they might truly want. Debunking Myths: 6 Lies Cops Tell Themselves to Stay on the Job dives into the reasons why these beliefs persist in law enforcement and challenges listeners to reconsider their career paths with fresh perspectives. Introduction to the Myths: Explore the context and popularity of the common lies that officers tell themselves about why they must stay in their jobs, setting the stage for a deeper discussion. Breaking Down the 6 Lies: I Wouldn't Be Good at Anything Else: Why it might feel true: Many officers identify so strongly with their role that imagining a different career seems impossible. Why it's not necessarily true: Skills like leadership, crisis management, and communication are highly transferable to numerous fields. It's the Only Thing I Know: Why it might feel true: Years of specialized training and experiences can make other jobs seem out of reach. Why it's not necessarily true: Many industries value the unique knowledge and discipline that former law enforcement officers bring. I Make Too Much Money to Leave: Why it might feel true: Law enforcement can offer competitive salaries not easily matched in other sectors. Why it's not necessarily true: Opportunities in private security, consulting, or corporate roles could match or exceed current earnings. The Benefits Are Just Too Good: Why it might feel true: Health insurance, retirement plans, and other benefits are often superior. Why it's not necessarily true: Many private sector jobs offer comparable, if not better, benefit packages. I'm Too Close to Retirement: Why it might feel true: The promise of retirement benefits can be a strong incentive to stay. Why it's not necessarily true: Mental and physical health, happiness, and personal growth are also critical to consider. It'll Make Me a Quitter or a 'Coward: Why it might feel true: Cultural stigma around leaving the force can pressure officers to stay. Why it's not necessarily true: Making a change for personal well-being is a brave and respectable decision. Encouraging Personal Reflection: Invite listeners to reflect on these myths and how they may have influenced their own career decisions. Encourage honest self-assessment about what truly brings fulfillment and joy in their professional lives. As a listener, think about conversations you can have with peers or mentors about these topics. Maybe start a journal to explore your thoughts and feelings about your career and future aspirations. Share insights or stories about overcoming these myths with the Tactical Living community to help support and inspire others who might be facing similar dilemmas. Tune into this episode to challenge the misconceptions that might be keeping you in a job out of obligation rather than passion. Whether you're contemplating a career shift or just seeking affirmation that it's okay to desire change, this discussion offers valuable insights and support. In this podcast I talk to bestselling author and podcast host Elise Loehnen about being a woman in today's world, the price we as women pay to be “good” and “on our best behavior”, how this impacts our mental wellbeing, and so much more! Elise is also the author of the New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good. This incredible book “weaves together history, memoir, and cultural criticism to explore the ways patriarchy lands in the bodies of women and embeds itself in our consciousness—and what we then police in ourselves and in each other”. It is about the way we as women are programmed by culture and society to adhere to certain ideas about “goodness”. in many ways, women, from young are programmed to be on their best behavior, while men are programmed to be powerful, which affects all parts of a woman's life.

Ever wonder what feminists mean by “the patriarchy?” It's presented as the boogeyman in our culture, but what is it really and where did it come from? If you've always assumed this is just the way the world has always been, but you're tired of being a “good girl” and instead crave being a whole, fully expressed woman, this episode is for you. To unpack this concept, Eleanor is joined by Elise Loehnen, author of the New York Times Bestseller, On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good. They're exploring its historical roots, how it manifests in modern women's lives, and the true cost of constantly playing by society's rules - rules that weren't built for women in the first place. We are kicking off the year with a very enlightening conversation with Elise Loehnen, author of the New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good. We discuss these seven “sins” and the (wrong) notion we've been fed that a “good woman” is not supposed to indulge them, and why it's so much easier to damage a woman's reputation than a man's. We chat about embracing pride, using your envy to figure out what you want in life, owning your lustfulness, and why anger is a positive emotion. We also talk about the nonstop policing and judging of women's bodies, why we punish ourselves for being “gluttonous,” and how we can learn to accept our bodies. There is so much ground covered, but above all – the importance of women supporting each other in the name of world domination. Before Elise joins us, we're doing a quick Christmas/appetizer contest recap, sharing our goals for 2024, as well as some from our audience, and announcing the official slogan for the year. Enjoy!
