Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. After going to hell, then to space, what's a slasher to do next? Why, have the big fight horror fans have dreamed of for decades, then reinvent yourself for the modern era! After many (many) failed attempts, we got to watch the bloody confrontation between Kruger & Vorhees. Then our favorite masked killer got the reboot treatment that was all the rage in the 2000s! Did these movies live up to our expectations? Just in time for December 2024's Friday the 13th, Erin & Gary break Shaun Rosado of Pop*Cycled Baubles back out from behind the wall once more to discuss the last two movies of the F13 series . . . for now! Listen in to this Jason-Sized episode as they discuss the origins of Freddy vs. Jason, mid-20's teenagers, unwarranted snark, American Pickers vs Jason, nerds love of crossovers, the top slashers (not you, Leatherface), working within franchise rules, the Jason Commentary Assignment, Erin's My Bloody Valentine remake rant, a three movie speed-run, cardio cardio cardio, if horror should be excessive, explanations they don't mind, good remake switch-ups, Jason's brutality & troll tendencies, a Supernatural segue, Theatrical vs Killer Cuts, and an appreciation of Art. Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. By 1987, Friday the 13th was an institution, a pop culture juggernaut that seemed as unstoppable as its main character. But after six movies and dozens of kills, some people thought that the series needed to be shaken up a bit. Thus, we get two movies that took the franchise in some new directions, pitting Jason against a superpowered final girl, and then taking him from the New Jersey forests to the mean streets of Manhattan (eventually). The biggest change, however, was the introduction of the man who would become what most people consider to be the definitive Jason Vorhees; actor, writer, stuntman, the legend, Kane Hodder. Rejoin Erin & Gary as they once more release Shaun Rosado from behind the wall, and welcome Laura Rosado from Pop*Cycled Baubles down into the catacombs to discuss the borders of Jason's territory, the size & location of Crystal Lake, the timeline of the series, how Kane is made of iron, when the 80's finally settles into the movies, the ecology of the rich teen, Jason wandering around Jasoning, Erin & Shaun's NY Survival Guide, Jason's breathing, Laura's boat rant, Kane's support of his fellow actors, potential Jason/Jaws/Lake Placid crossovers, the worst doctor & the worst uncle in the series, and Jason as a . . . feral panda? Kane Hodder's biography. Friday the 13th.fandom.com. Crystal Lake's (possible) connection to NY Map. Maniac of New York on Amazon. Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. Thank you for returning to the Catacombs, dear Connoisseurs, as Erin and Gary conculde (for now) their conversation with Shaun Rosado of Pop*Cycled Baubles about horror shows that started their life as a film. Listen in as they start with a show that wasn't a show, how horror always goes to space, the twists at a vampire bar, responsible public mayhem, their favorite Good Guy series, why you should give horror television your time, representation in horror, and Shaun's many Les layers. Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. They say that we are living in a golden age of television, Connoisseurs, and of course this includes horror. In fact, there are so many fearful shows out there that your hosts have decided to talk about them in a collection of select tastings; starting with programs that started their lives on the silver screen, before moving to the (dead) set. To begin this series, Erin & Gary have decided to crack open the wall to talk once more with Shaun Rosado of Pop*Cycled Baubles about how horror can be improved by being translated to TV, ponder the question "Is this really good, or am I just thirsty for horror?", the balance between innovation vs delivering more of the same, Twizzlers vs Red Vines, the sweet spot number of episodes, and if Stephen King is listening - they're on to him. Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. Happy Halloween! Normally, we would be off this week, but Erin & Gary thought that all you little monsters, devils, and creatures of the night deserved a little treat for the holiday. So they have gotten three of their previous guests to tell you some tales from behind the wall. First, Shaun Rosado reads The Petting Zoo by Peter de Niverville (time marker 1:49). Then Darin M. Bush reads his story Project Wheat Field (time marker 30:09). And to close us out, Michael G. Williams reads his story The Line (time marker 35:51), published in A Woman Unbecoming from Crone Girl Press. Please consider donating to Planned Parenthood, if you can.
1986's Chopping Mall tells a story as old as time: three high-tech security robots turn into maniacal killing machines and start murdering the teenage employees of a shopping mall after dark. Also: someone skateboards inside the mall. Kevin and Mike are joined by Gary Mitchel (of the horror podcast A Podcask of Amontillado) and Shaun Rosado (of PopCycled Baubles) to discuss the film, its place within the firmament of 80s horror, its misleading VHS cover art, and scary movies in general. I love the smell of commerce in the morning!
Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. Return to the catacombs as Erin and Gary conculde their conversation with Shaun Rosado of Pop*Cycled Baubles about the 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead, as the discuss the 1990 & 2014 remakes, why we should pity the zombies, dinosaurs, other movies that came out that year, and more. 1990 Remake trailer, making of documentary & for purchase. 2006 Remake trailer. Nights of the Living Dead anthology. Opening and closing music is "Softly Shall You Sleep," by Valentine Wolfe.
Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. In 1968, George Romero redefined a monster and introduced a new genre of horror. Join Erin & Gary as they talk with Shaun Rosado of Pop*Cycled Baubles about how Romero breathed new (un)life into the zombie, the impact and legacy of his film, discuss who was right, the real monsters, nihilism vs hope, and possibly the most epic first time viewing story ever. Then, be ready to come back next time, as there was too much to cover to be contained in one episode. I Walked With a Zombie trailer. Night of the Living Dead on YouTube. How NotLD Accidentally Became Public Domain. The Hays Code. The Plaza Theater in Atlanta. Opening and closing music is "Softly Shall You Sleep," by Valentine Wolfe. Kevin and Mike are joined by special guest Shaun Rosado to discuss 1989's time-travel classic Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure! Together they cover the film, the very tiny bit of skateboarding contained therein, its two sequels, Jane Wiedlin, Mike's experience living in San Dimas, Spicoli, "surfer talk" and quantum mechanics. Strange things are afoot at the Circle K, and Gleaming the Tube is here for it. https://www.gleamingthetube.net/
Shaun Rosado joins us this week to look back on Sixteen Candles, a movie that changed how we viewed teen, high school comedies and furthered the genre ahead leading to things like Booksmart and even Spider-Man Homecoming. However, our views on the movie have changed as we notice that a movie celebrated for telling "normal" teen stories, treats any ethnic character like a stereotypical cartoon, normalizes date rape and positions it as a way for girls to realize how good a boy is.
