Chef Gail Sokol is back. She'll teach us the tricks of that summer favorite - Strawberry Shortcake. Ray Graf hosts.
Here's something we love: Hunter Hammersen's "quiet, everyday magic that's easy to overlook. But it's magic nonetheless." She is talking about her "Noteworthy" pattern for a little pouch that looks like a piece of paper because "paper is magic, and the right piece of paper can change the world." When Bootie knit this little gem, it brought her "a bit of happy distraction," and while that did not change the world, it did just what Hammersen promised: it made the world "a tiny bit more comfortable, for just one person, for just a moment. And that's a kind of magic too." This is the power of knitting to take us out of the present and into a timeless moment of making. Hammersen is right--look at the world through the frame of quiet, everyday magic, and you'll find all kinds of magic. And here's a bit of culinary magic: Strawberry Shortcake with a Lemon Curd Cream--an upgrade on the old family favorite that you just have to try.We also found some magic in Anne Macdonald's account of women knitting in the 19th Century in No Idle Hands: The Social History of American Knitting. While we tend not to think of the Victorian era as particularly "sporty," this was when women started riding bicycles, playing tennis, golf and croquet; they were literally moving more and their clothing had to change to keep up. So they ditched their shawls, corsets and hoopskirts for sweaters and bloomers. Some regarded these new fashions as "ugly and eccentric," but thankfully, they persevered. The specter of a woman knitting was an assurance of womanliness that Mrs. Clorinda Nichols appropriated as she "tended strictly to her knitting" while she "duped male legislators into underestimating her crusade for more liberal property rights for women" at Kansas's first state constitutional convention (p. 143). Brilliant. But in the midst of all this moving and change, many women still found in knitting the space for creative transformation, as author Jane Croly expressed it:"The little work-tables of women's fingers, are the playgrounds of women's fancies, and their knitting needles are the fairy-wands by which they transform a whole room into a spirit isle of dreams."Jane Croly on her "view of knitting serenity," quoted in Anne L. Macdonald, No Idle Hands: The Social History of American Knitting, p. 142.So we hope we offer a little bit of quiet, everyday magic in this episode--it's not changing the world, we know, but if it makes you smile just once, or provides a bit of happy distraction, well, that's the kind of magic we aim to make.
Looking forward to a special summer series of investing in your passion and purpose. In this episode, we'll explore what passion and purpose truly are—and why they matter. Passion is your inner blue flame, tied to your natural gifts, while purpose brings lasting fulfillment. You'll hear more about Muriel Fahrion, creator of Strawberry Shortcake, and how she discovered her passion at a young age and how she defines "passion". We also touch on how burnout often comes from being disconnected from your passion. Plus, I'll guide you through four simple, reflective prompts to help you reconnect with what excites and fulfills you.

In this deeply moving and delightfully humorous Mother's Day sermon, explore the profound interconnectedness of humanity through the lens of maternal love, shared memory, and sacred community. Drawing on everything from personal stories and ancient scripture to Strawberry Shortcake and $30 Mayfair chairs, Fr. Peter Walsh reflects on the power of belonging, the joy of giving, and the divine call to love irrationally. This is a message about who we are, how we're knit together, and why community—especially one rooted in love—is more vital than ever. The Fourth Sunday of Easter

But here's the deal: we've had some special releases in between our regular shows, so while it may seem like we're flooding your feed, it's all in the name of keeping things exciting. Or so we tell ourselves. This time, we dove into a true classic that recently got a well-deserved facelift—Cyclades. Originally released in 2009, it was one of those gems we missed before board games became a staple in our lives. And wow, the production quality is nothing short of stunning. For those who picked up the deluxe components, I bet you weren't disappointed. Now, let me be honest—this game exposed my weaknesses in a way I didn't see coming. It wasn't the game's fault; it was mine. But hey, maybe that's a sign of a solid strategy game—one that lays bare where you struggle and pushes you to improve. If you were a fan of the classic and have a well-loved, slightly worn-out copy sitting on your shelf, it might be time to snag this refreshed edition and bring Cyclades back to the table in all its glory. Kyle Robinson, President of the Plant City Strawberry Festival, sits down with host Owen LeFave to discuss his career journey and lifelong connection to an annual event that has seen its own evolution. Kyle managed security for the Strawberry Festival during many of the 27 years he spent working with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. He became president of the festival in 2022. Since its 1930 inception, the Plant City Strawberry Festival has had a rich history and continues to have a cultural, community, and economic impact on the region–from the creation of year-round and seasonal jobs that support local families to the dedication of its 1,400 volunteers. Not only does the festival claim to be the birthplace of the Strawberry Shortcake, but its support of local agriculture and youth through nearly $2 million in 4-H and FFA scholarships demonstrates its commitment to giving back to the community. At the same time, strong partnerships with law enforcement, an enhanced concert experience, reception to customer feedback, and plans for infrastructure improvements show how the festival is always looking forward. If you've ever wondered how an organization can strike the right balance between pride in its traditions and dedication to future growth, this is the episode for you. The Bank of Tampa | Member FDIC

Hasbro is pretty much DONE making toys themselves, and it sounds like they're doubling down on outsourcing in 2025. How long until they outsource core brands like Transformers and GI Joe? Power Rangers is with Playmates. My Little Pony, Jem and Strawberry Shortcake are with smaller companies. Even Dungeons & Dragons board games are with Ravensburger and NOT WotC or Milton Bradley, which seems to indicate that even their games division isn't safe...

This week on It Was a Thing on TV we celebrate Thanksgiving with our annual look at past parades! First, we go back to 1988, to see what were the big shows on Broadway, to see what TV stars would appear on floats, to see what the big gifts of 1988 were, to see what headwear Willard Scott was donning, and to see the grand ending of the parade--Santa Claus! Then, we jump back 43 years to 1981. What was the hotness that year? A version of Strawberry Shortcake which was reminiscent to the technology used in Malcolm, for one. The video game surge started, though it wasn't represented in the parade. As you prepare to do Black Friday shopping, remember to go to the AT&T phone store and get a Garfield phone. Happy Thanksgiving! (For those outside of the United States, happy Thursday.) For this holiday, we jump back 43 years to 1981.
Just in time for Thanksgiving, we look back at all the floats, balloons, and insanity of the 1983 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with appearances by Care Bears, Fraggles, Chipmunks, Yogi Bear, Strawberry Shortcake, and CATS! ICYMI: One of our favorite podcasts with an 80s icon! As little girls growing up in the 80s, most of us fell in love with Strawberry Shortcake and her friends. Muriel Fahrion created Strawberry Shortcake first as a greeting card and went on to create a line of characters we all know and love. Fahrion also created Care Bears and The Get Along Gang. Fahrion calls Tulsa home and talks about her sweet smelling adventures.

In this episode of our “Having a Moment” series, they immerse you in the nostalgic (and delicious!) world of Strawberry Shortcake, exploring: What went into capturing the taste of a freshly-baked strawberry shortcake? And how does it activate neural pathways that evoke joyful memories?Shop the new Strawberry Shortcake fragrance starting Tuesday, October 1st, on Scentbird.com.
While dolls, games, and action figures have existed for decades, even centuries, in the 1980s toys became big business – the industry earned an estimated $12 billion in America in 1986 alone. IP concepts and trends that started in the 1960s and 70s were fully developed, manufactured, and marketed to eager moppets transfixed by after-school cartoons or breakfast cereal tie-ins. And the toys themselves were incredible, with many of the most popular lines standing the test of time even decades later. Now the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine: what IS the Best 80s Toys Line? Toy lines discussed: Cabbage Patch Kids, Jem and the Holograms, Micro Machines, G.I. Joe, Pound Puppies, Polly Pocket, Masters of the Universe, My Little Pony, Care Bears, Star Wars, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Popples, Thundercats, Transformers. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Karissa Kloss, Kate Racculia, and Zack Derby as they discuss and debate 16 of the most legendary toy lines of the 1980s. PLUS you can watch Strawberry Shortcake's berry amazing classic shows and movies for free on The Roku Channel and YouTube! Grandberry Jam's Chocolate Cake Recipe! Cake Ingredients: 6 eggs 1 and 2/3 cups of granulated sugar 3 sticks of soft butter 2 and 3/4 cups of self raising flour 1/4 cup of cocoa powder A pinch of Cayenne Pepper Decoration/Filling: Fresh Cream Raspberry Jam Strawberries Chocolate shavings (optional) Directions: Preheat your oven to 350ºF Line your baking tins (2 x 7 OR 8inch round sandwich tins) Cream your butter and sugar together until combined nicely In a separate bowl, whisk your eggs and then add bit by bit to your butter and sugar mixture Once your wet ingredients have come together, add your flour and cocoa powder one spoon at a time to avoid a lumpy batter! Finally, throw a dash of cayenne pepper into the batter and mix thoroughly Split evenly and pour your delicious mixture into each lined baking tin and pop in the oven Bake for 35-40 mins or until your cake is firm (you'll know it is ready when the sponge bounces back when you gently press down on it. Alternatively, stick a skewer into the centre of the cake and if it comes out completely clean, you're good to go!) Leave to cool in the tins for about 10 minutes and then move to a wire rack to cool completely – Make sure the cake is definitely cool before decorating Whilst your cake is cooling, whip your fresh cream until it is thick, glossy and forms firm white peaks when mixing (be careful not to over-whip it! We don't want to make butter by accident!) Plop a generous dollop of your whipped cream onto one cake sponge and spread evenly You can mix your raspberry jam up in a bowl to make it runnier and easier to spoon onto the cream layer Once your cream and jam are layered, place your second sponge on top to create your layered cake sandwich You can top your cake off with some more cream and decorate as you please but some whole strawberries and chocolate shavings is always a nice touch. Serve and enjoy! Stacy does it all! She has learned how to embrace the calm in the chaos!!! Stacy challenges and inspires us to be responsible, kind, and courageous! She makes entrepreneurship look attainable and exciting with her out-of-the-box thinking and then taking action. However, I am most compelled by how she educates and gives back through her philanthropy branding and entrepreneurship. "Stacy Igel is Founder & Creative Director of BOY MEETS GIRL®, a young contemporary athleisure brand. Igel's a proud mom of son @dylanreidigel, industry leader & writes a lifestyle blog, Behind the Seams™ with Stacy Igel. She is also is the co-creator and co-host of the podcast MOMSGOTTHIS for mompreneurs. As part of her entrepreneurial endeavors, charity is a large focus. She has been a chair for several years for the YSCs ILP Gala & is a brand ambassador for the NSCC's BullyBust campaign. Igel's received several design awards & honors. She is a lecturer & panelist on subjects such as social media, philanthropy, branding & entrepreneurship." When Stacy agreed to be on my podcast, I was thrilled as I am with all my guests. However, this was a little different. Her book, Embracing the Calm in the Chaos: How to Find Success in Business and Life Through Perseverance, Connection, and Collaboration Inspired me as an entrepreneur, as a mom, as a woman, as a creative, and in so many other ways. There were so many moments in her story where Stacy stepped out of fear and into her confidence, competence, and vision, making things happen! So, I tapped into my confidence, competence, and vision and asked her to be on the podcast! Of course, she said "yes" because she's a fantastic giving soul. She's been giving back through her company for 23+ years, so I wasn't shocked at her willingness to pour a little love into my creative project :-) Her book is filled with wisdom. Stacy does everything with intention, purpose, and meaning, whether it's the collaboration with a cause or her creative values. I'm so thrilled to have had this conversation with Stacy. Whether you're reading her book as an entrepreneur or not, you will learn so much about perseverance, connection, collaboration, and all the amazing things that can happen when we step into the adventure of connecting and giving back. I am super excited about her latest collaboration with Strawberry Shortcake! Enjoy the conversation! And if you are inspired, share this episode with someone you love so they can be inspired. ~Heather

As the case unravels, police wonder why this happened, and think her ex-boyfriend is the culprit... but did he do it alone?? These questions haunt everyone involved, until two startling, but different confessions put the whole thing into perspective!!Along the way, we find out that slam poetry is for cowboys, too, that just because you break up with someone, doesn't mean that you won't have to see them again, and that love can cause confessions!!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports!
