The Auckland musician speaks to Charlotte Ryan about her beautiful new album, along with Kiwi music icon Shayne Carter who lent a hand as “song doctor”.
This week's guest can school us on a lot of things to become a successful, professional farrier- Bob Pethick. Bob has shod horses professionally for over 50 years and not only just regular type horses, high dollar, high stress, top level sport horses that compete at the highest level for the United States Equestrian Team for nearly his whole career. He had it set in his mind from day 1 of starting his career that he wanted to shoe the highest level caliber horses and made that happen for over 37 years now. That just blows my mind to be honest! I think that speaks volumes about the quality of work Bob commits to every day and also Bob's character for being able to maintain those relationships for that long. All the while he was able to do this, Bob competed at the highest level and was selected to become a member of the North American Horseshoeing Team 2 times and also earning a spot on the American Farriers Team 5 times and those years were with some of the more well known guys in our industry like Jim Poor, Craig Trnka, Shayne Carter and many other badasses! Amongst many other accolades and accomplishments Bob has earned, Bob was inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2006. I think there's a lot to be gained by sitting down and listening to a guy like Bob talk and soak up the knowledge he has to share. Enjoy the episode! History was made at last night's Ockham Book Awards, with two first time writers taking out the top fiction and non fiction prizes. Becky Manawatu's novel Aue, a raw and heartbreaking story of two orphaned Maori brothers each struggling to survive, won the $55,000 Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction and the Hubert Church Prize for best first book of Fiction. Straitjacket Fits frontman Shayne Carter has also taken out both the first book and overall best book in the General Non Fiction category for his memoir Dead People I Have Known. It's the first time debut Māori writers have won both top awards. In another first - because of Covid-19, the Ockham Book Awards ceremony has held online. Standing Room Only's Lynn Freeman watched all the action.
Legendary Dunedin musician Shayne Carter can now add multi-award winning author to his life story. He speaks to Jesse Mulligan.

In Dead People I Have Known, the legendary New Zealand musician Shayne Carter tells the story of a life in music, taking us deep behind the scenes and songs of his riotous teenage bands Bored Games and the Doublehappys, his best-known bands Straitjacket Fits and Dimmer. Carter appears live in conversation with WORD Programme Director Rachael King about the writing of the book – often poetic, often hilarious, always engaging – and the stories within, which feature bands, women, family and friends.
A giant of New Zealand music, Shayne Carter writes of the people, places and social forces that have shaped him in his autobiography Dead People I Have Known. From the death of a band member, to the halted progress of Straitjacket Fits – the band that was expected to conquer the world with numbers such as “She Speeds”– and his dazzling come-back with the band Dimmer, Carter’s story is a hike through our cultural landscape, notably taking in that ‘Dunedin Sound’. Carter is in conversation with John Campbell.
Indie-rock legend Shayne Carter (best known for his bands Straitjacket Fits and Dimmer) will talk about his new autobiography, Dead People I Have Known. Shihad’s Jon Toogood gave the book this verdict: “Sometimes profound. Sometimes utterly hilarious. I couldn’t put this book down. A triumph.” Carter will talk about his stellar music career, the Dunedin Sound, his love of sport, growing up in Dunedin, and everything in between. Chaired by Carter’s former driving student Steve Braunias. This show was broadcast on OAR 105.4FM Dunedin www.oar.org.nz

Dunedin band Death And The Maiden can count Shayne Carter among their growing number of fans. He invited them to perform at the Silver Scrolls last year, and since then they've released their second album of dark, electro-tinged pop, Wisteria.
Shayne Carter is a recurring theme, as his bands Double Happys and Straitjacket Fits are featured along with a 7" collaboration with New Zealand legend, Peter Jefferies. Bob and Mike also play and discuss tracks from Sonic Youth, Human Instinct, and Kim Deal.
