--- The GovExperts is the new mini-series from GovEx Data Points spotlighting some of the top minds in public sector data. In our inaugural episode we discuss what generative AI is good at, how cities are interacting with it, and what it means for the workforce.--- We're chatting with Andrew Nicklin, Senior Research Data Manager at GovEx. Andrew takes us from his early days at the NYC parks department to his pivotal role in launching the NYC Open Data platform, and how this experience led him to GovEx at the invitation of founder Beth Blauer.Discover how cities are already using AI to power chatbots and manage documents, and why Andrew believes AI could help residents feel more comfortable accessing sensitive services like housing or food assistance. Wondering if AI will replace public sector workers? Andrew says rather than take jobs, it will most likely transform them, freeing up public servants to tackle big challenges. Plus, get an exclusive preview of GovEx's new City Data Explorer, a tool that uses 1.7 million data points to track 40 key metrics across the 100 largest U.S. cities. --- Learn more about GovEx--- Fill out our listener survey!

Sarah Nicklin, the beloved of indie horror, has been working in horror for nearly two decades. Sarah's career in film has expanded traction in recent years for her diverse involvement in horror movies, music videos, shorts, and series. She is also stunt performer and producer. She has worked with many horror legends, including Eileen Dietz, Lisa Wilcox, Doug Jones and Dee Wallace, just to name a few. __________________________________________________ Sarah is an amazing and talented actress; I say this because if anyone can act in a horror movie about a serial killer and emotionally connect with the victim vicariously, then nominate her for an Oscar! Sarah's experience working on set in regard to having a dark history just makes the audience want to know and watch more. To be on set and reenact the last moments (for some) of the deceased and those who survived. I could not imagine what was going through their minds as they were filming. We mostly talked about her character and Ted Bundy. We also posed the theory (mainly a question) as to why serial killers do what they do. There are so many unanswered questions and variables for what makes them [serial killers] tick. To anyone who has not seen this movie, I highly recommend either renting it on Amazon or going to your nearest store and purchase the DVD. Watching parts of the movie through the point of view of the killer along with the ominous build-ups is pure genius. This strategy is what makes a director earn awards and stand out among the rest.   Be sure to follow Sarah on Instagram for news and upcoming projects.

Generational differences may get laughs online. (Remember “OK boomer”?) But in the workplace, productivity can suffer when older and younger workers struggle to communicate and find common ground. Mimi Nicklin, a business coach and advertising executive, argues that older managers should spend less time forcing their Millennial and Gen Z employees to conform to company culture and more time listening. But Nicklin says listening isn't enough. Practicing empathy across generational divides is key to improving team collaboration and creating better business and individual outcomes – and that can go both ways. “What empathy in a leader, or from a leadership point of view, really asks of us is to understand, to ask opinions, to listen,” she tells IdeaCast host Curt Nickisch. “Empathy for me is about perspective taking -- seeing the world through the eyes of someone else, seeing their context.” In this episode, Nicklin explains how to build common ground and tackle generational tensions on your team – with plenty of real-world examples from companies that prioritize empathy. Nicklin wrote the book Softening the Edge: Empathy: How Humanity's Oldest Leadership Trait is Changing the World. Key episode topics include: leadership, leading teams, psychology, age and generational issues, conflict, growth, differences, millennials, organizational culture, communication, talent management, GenZ, empathy. Mimi Nicklin is the internationally bestselling author of Softening The Edge - an incredible book about how humanity's oldest leadership trait - empathy - is changing our world. The data shows that in emotionally intelligent organisations where empathy is high, we see performance, productivity, and creativity go up.Mimi believes that empathy – a scientifically validated skillset –has the power to not only change business environments, but to change society for the better. This was music to my ears.I can't think of a better time to talk to Mimi about empathy - burn out is at an all-time high, we are all feeling super jaded after the last year, passion is dropping, and the younger generation is leaving the corporate world quicker than they entered it.Mimi believes that we are significantly underestimating the powerful role that increased empathy could have on profits as well as workplaces at large. We had a fascinating discussion about empathy - can it be taught or are we born with it, how we can build empathy within our workplaces, and how can we balance the demands of a corporate job with a desire to lead an empathetic life? I loved what Mimi had to say about empathy, community and connection, and how it can make a real difference to our world and the way we do business. I hope you enjoy our conversation.Follow me, and the Good Intentions podcast:https://www.instagram.com/kellyharvarde/Find Mimi Nicklin here:https://www.instagram.com/miminicklin/https://www.linkedin.com/in/miminicklin/Mimi's wonderful book is here:https://www.amazon.ae/Softening-Edge-humanitys-leadership-changing/dp/9948340094Immerse yourself in some of the books we discussed: Hit Refresh - Satya Nadellahttps://magrudy.com/book/hit-refresh-9780008247652/Lean In - Sheryl Sandberghttps://magrudy.com/book/lean-in-women-work-and-the-will-to-lead-9780753541647/

Right now, our interactions feel prickly and pointed so maybe it's time to come back to our human roots and embrace humanity's oldest leadership trait: empathy. That's what today's guest, Mimi Nicklin, has devoted her work to advocating. Mimi and I discuss what softening the edges means in practice and how empathetic leaders show up. We also talk about finding empathy across generations in the workplace, about balancing humanism with capitalism, and also how her diverse cultural experience has helped her find commonalities rather than differences across cultures. Key Takeaways:All creativity comes from a tension point - and you have to be able to express that. Empathy leads to a decrease in self-censorship and an increase in creativity and innovation. It's not just about the feelings. It's about the way we think and the way we get things done.To empathize is not to agree, to empathize is to understand. If there has ever been a time to voice change, it is now. "Curiosity is the foundation of all humanity." —  Mimi Nicklin About Mimi Nicklin:Mimi Nicklin, Bestselling Author and Empathetic Leadership CoachMimi Nicklin is the internationally bestselling author of ‘Softening The Edge' and the host of the ‘Empathy for Breakfast' breakfast show & podcast.
