In deze aflevering van Doorzagen vertelt demissionair minister Keijzer hoe zij tegen de woningbouwsector aankijkt en wat er volgens haar nodig is de markt te laten floreren. De dochter van een bouwvakker laat bovendien weten dat ze, ondanks haar demissionaire status, nog lang niet klaar is met locaties aanwijzen en regels schrappen. Ze baalt er wel van dat het kabinet is gevallen. "Ik kan niet doen, wat ik allemaal wilde doen." Het verwijt dat ze industriële houtbouwers dwarsboomt door de eerder beloofde aanscherping van de Mpg niet door te laten gaan, legt ze naast zich neer. "Ondernemers moeten er zelf voor zorgen dat hun product aantrekkelijk is. Op een gegeven moment is duurzaam duurzaam genoeg."

Als je echt goed wilt worden in het ontwerp van houten gebouwen dan moet je, net als een topsporter, daarop trainen – trainen – trainen. Daarom heeft architect Tim Vermeend er enkele jaren geleden voor gekozen om met zijn bureau Urban Climate Architects enkel nog aan houten en houthybride gebouwen te werken. In deze aflevering van de Architectenweb Podcast een diepgaand gesprek over bouwen met hout en de ontwikkeling die dat doormaakt.Deze podcast wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door AGC.Als het om bouwen met hout gaat, onderscheidt Tim verschillende generaties. In de eerste generatie werden houten gebouwen eigenlijk net zo geconstrueerd als we dat eerder bij betonnen gebouwen deden. Met dikke platen CLT, dus relatief veel hout. In de tweede generatie wordt het houtgebruik geoptimaliseerd met constructies uit kolommen en balken, en worden verschillende soorten hout gebruikt.In de derde generatie worden kolommen toegepast zónder deze nog te hoeven combineren met balken; die dragen dus rechtstreeks de vloeren. In de vierde generatie wordt hout waar dat kan vervangen door vezelgewassen. Door daar harde plaatmaterialen van te maken, kunnen die toegepast worden in binnenwanden, maar ook in vloeren. Die delen in een CLT-vloer die het minst bijdragen aan de draagconstructie kunnen volgens Tim ook vervangen worden door vezelgewassen.Het meest ambitieuze houtbouwproject dat Urban Climate Architects tot zover heeft ontworpen is The Urban Woods in Delft. Dat zit tussen de tweede en derde generatie houtbouw in, vindt Tim, en wordt momenteel gebouwd. Het woongebouw wordt tien verdiepingen hoog en bevat een aantal innovaties. Zo wordt de stabiliteit opgelost via diagonalen in de gevel, zodat de kern ook in hout uitgevoerd kan worden. Dat scheelt een hele bouwfase, legt Tim uit. Ook wordt in het project CLT toegepast waarin oude pellets zijn verwerkt. Dit product is mede door TNO ontwikkeld en Tim denkt mee hoe dit product doorontwikkeld kan worden. De toepassing van dit CLT in dit woongebouw in Delft is een wereldwijde primeur.In CLT wordt tot nu toe altijd nieuw hout verwerkt. In de MPG wordt er momenteel ook vanuit gegaan dat hout aan het eind van zijn levensduur verbrand wordt. In de praktijk wordt goed hout natuurlijk niet zo snel verbrand, maar het wordt wel vaak gedowncycled. Als het lukt om een productieproces te creëren waarin tweedehands hout, zoals dat van pellets, verwerkt kan worden tot CLT, dan hebben we het echt over een upcycling, legt Tim in de podcast uit. Volgens hem is dit goed mogelijk. Het zou de houtindustrie op z'n kop zetten.De houten vloeren in The Urban Woods worden afgewerkt met een cementvloer waarin de vloerverwarming opgenomen is. Net zo heeft het gebouw nog wel een betonnen parkeerkelder en betonnen balkons. In een project kun je niet op alle vlakken tegelijk innoveren, vindt Tim. In volgende projecten hoopt hij bijvoorbeeld wat betreft die balkons weer een vervolgstap te kunnen zetten. Maar hij benadrukt ook dat bouwen met hout maar een middel is. Het gaat erom dat we de CO2-uitstoot van onze gebouwen drastisch omlaag brengen. Nu. En daarvoor zet hij sterk in op de toepassing van biobased materialen.
