Our support of aging animals has become part of our aging experiences… Part one of this episode features Alice Wingwall, a photographer and film editor whose unique work is influenced through her creative engagement with her declining vision. She has continued to evolve her artwork with the help of her guide dogs. Her images tell the story of this relationship. Alice introduces our day of exploration. Playful puppies and cuddly kittens are usually the first ones to be adopted in shelters, but what about senior pets? The sad truth is in most facilities, senior pets are the last to be adopted, if they're adopted at all. The ASPCA reports that senior dogs have a 25% adoption rate, compared to the 60% adoption rate of younger dogs and puppies and the stats for cats are even worse. In this episode, host Amy Castro explores the world of senior dog rescue and adoption with Sherri Franklin, president and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco. Muttville was the first senior dog rescue in the US and has saved the lives of almost 11,000 senior dogs since it began in 2007. In this episode, Amy and Sherri discuss:Why so many senior dogs end up in sheltersWhy people hesitate to adopt senior dogsThe benefits of adopting a seniorThe important role fosters play in getting dogs adoptedHospice adoption and the rewards for both dog and adopterAnd more!Shoutouts in this episode:Muttville Senior Dog RescueFamily Animal Hospital of FriendswoodStarlight Outreach and Rescue#petadoption #adoptdontshop #dogbreeder #pets #petstagram #petsofinstagram #petsagram #instapets #petshop #pets_of_instagram #cutepets #petscorner #petsofig #picpets #worldofcutepets #pets_perfection #lovepets #exoticpets #petsofinsta #petsgram #delight_pets #friendlypets #showcasing_pets #inspiredbypets #pets_of_our_world #rescuepetsofinstagram #mypets #petsarefamily s #petslover #petnutrition #podcast #petpodcaster #petcare #petfriendly #petlovers #petwellness #seniordog #seniordogs #seniorpetsKeep this podcast coming to you each week and bringing you GREAT content so you can be the best pet parent ever! https://www.buymeacoffee.com/starlightpettalkGET YOUR STARLIGHT PET TALK MERCHANDISE HERE! www.starlightoutreachandrescue.org/store FOLLOW STARLIGHT PET TALK ▷ Official Site: https://www.starlighpettalk.com ▶ Facebook: / starlightoutreachandrescue ▶ YouTube: -https://bit.ly/starlightsubscribe ▶ TikTok: ...

Sherri Franklin is the founder of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. She was named a CNN Hero in 2016, which emphasizes the impact she's had on the lives of senior animals and her community overall. She joins us today to talk about her mission to help aging animals. Sherri explains how Muttville began, why she ultimately decided to do something about the animal shelter conditions she'd witnessed, and how she continues to sustain a growing Muttville all these years later. I also ask Sherri an important question, one I feel she's best qualified to answer: How do we know when it is the right time to say goodbye to our beloved? In this episode, you'll hear how beautiful it can be to care so much. You'll hear about the ultimate goals for Muttville and why the mayor of San Francisco has officially declared a Muttville Senior Rescue Dog day across the city. You'll hear how among the ones who need it most - the precious oldies - there are those on the fighting line making a real difference. And you'll eagerly want to be part of it. There is a reason Sherri Franklin, the founder of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, was named a CNN Hero. She saw how often senior dogs were euthanized because they were older or became a bother or had health issues. You must learn of her great work and the value in rescuing a senior. I rescued one of her seniors, Rocket, a Havanese. See all video episodes at www.Patreon.com/MaureenLangan

This Thursday, May 20th, is National Rescue Dog Day and what a pandemic the past 15 months it's been in the world of rescue animals. Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco has seen a large increase in adoptions as people work from home and realize the heartfelt value in adopting a rescue dog and saving a life. Muttville has also seen an increase on the intake side, in fact the number of dogs we've saved has jumped by 28% compared to last year at this time! www.muttville.org See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since the taping of Sherri Franklin’s episode, Giving Senior Dogs a Second Chance, COVID19 has brought the world to a standstill. There are reports of shelters experiencing increased foster adoptions but also reports of increased animal drop-offs as people lose their jobs. I caught up with Sherri to see how Muttville has been faring the storm so far. Refer to this show's episode page for resources on how to help keep your pet if you fall on hard times.
While volunteering at animal shelters, Sherri Franklin noticed that senior dogs had little to no chance of being adopted- they're not always the prettiest of the bunch, they may have unknown health issues, and the attraction of a new puppy can sometimes be far greater. This broke Sherri's heart and she decided to start Muttville, a shelter-based in San Francisco that rescues senior dogs and adopts them out to forever homes, oftentimes giving these grateful pups a loving final chapter to their lives. If you're struggling with the expenses of your pet or with keeping your pet, check out this week's show notes for a list of resources. Once upon a time, Sherri Franklin was a successful (but uninspired) hairstylist in San Francisco To find purpose in life, she began volunteering at the SPCA...and an old dog named Heidi captured her heart. Today, Franklin runs Muttville, a $4 million social enterprise that specializes in rescuing senior dogs. Research shows that old dogs over 7 are often considered “unadoptable” and put down even if they are in good health with friendly personalities. Franklin is committed to changing that statistic. In this inspiring podcast, learn how she basically changed everything in her life to make an impact in this world,
Sherri Franklin loves animals. This episode, she starts off talking about Heidi—an eight-year-old Bassett hound who inspired Sherri to do something about senior dog care. And so, she founded Muttvile Senior Dog Rescue in 2007. Today, Muttville has found forever homes for more than 7,000 senior dogs, and they place 1,110 dogs in homes every year. If you're interested in fostering or adopting a senior dog, or you just wanna spend an afternoon among them, please go to Muttville's website for more information. And if you missed Part 1, please go back to hear Sherri talk about moving to San Francisco, the '89 earthquake, and how she started volunteering at the SFSPCA. Film photography by Michelle Kilfeather
How do you go from being a successful hair stylist who uprooted herself to move to the Bay Area to founding a senior dog rescue non-profit? That's the story of Muttville Founder and CEO Sherri Franklin. In this podcast, Sherri takes us on a journey from LA to the Bay Area. She shares her experiences in the 1989 earthquake. She ends this episode with her early volunteer work with the SFSPCA. Check back Thursday, when Sherri will tell the story of how she started Muttville. Dr. Karen Becker interviews Sherri Franklin who founded Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in 2007 after the painful realization that many older shelter dogs never find new homes. Muttville's mission, in addition to saving and rehoming seniors, is to spread the word around the world about the specialness of older dogs. Sherri Franklin, Founder and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, shares her journey in animal rescue at the Rescue Think Tank as she celebrates Muttville’s Tenth Anniversary. Sherri Franklin, a long-time animal advocate and shelter volunteer, founded Muttville in 2007 to save the lives of the older dogs that were considered “unadoptable” and routinely euthanized in area shelters. Working from her house, she saved 27 dogs that first year. She said she “wanted to make senior dogs sexy,” and in fact, has turned the organization into a Bay Area favorite and a national model. In 2010, Sherri received the Jefferson Award for Public Service, which recognizes those who “inspire others to service.” In 2016, CNN named Sherri a CNN Hero.
